Summary

From New York Times bestselling author Julia Quinn comes the first novel in the beloved Regency-set world of her charming, powerful Bridgerton family, now a series created by Shonda Rhimes for Netflix。

In the ballrooms and drawing rooms of Regency London, rules abound。 From their earliest days, children of aristocrats learn how to address an earl and curtsey before a prince—while other dictates of the ton are unspoken yet universally understood。 A proper duke should be imperious and aloof。 A young, marriageable lady should be amiable…but not too amiable。

Daphne Bridgerton has always failed at the latter。 The fourth of eight siblings in her close-knit family, she has formed friendships with the most eligible young men in London。 Everyone likes Daphne for her kindness and wit。 But no one truly desires her。 She is simply too deuced honest for that, too unwilling to play the romantic games that captivate gentlemen。

Amiability is not a characteristic shared by Simon Basset, Duke of Hastings。 Recently returned to England from abroad, he intends to shun both marriage and society—just as his callous father shunned Simon throughout his painful childhood。 Yet an encounter with his best friend’s sister offers another option。 If Daphne agrees to a fake courtship, Simon can deter the mamas who parade their daughters before him。 Daphne, meanwhile, will see her prospects and her reputation soar。

The plan works like a charm—at first。 But amid the glittering, gossipy, cut-throat world of London’s elite, there is only one certainty: love ignores every rule。。。

This novel includes the 2nd epilogue, a peek at the story after the story。

And cannot wait to read on in the series。 I fell in love with the characters, the world, and the tone almost immediately。 From Lady Whistledown to the entire, boistrous Bridgerton family and their hilarious yet strong matriarch, to the banter and comedic situations involving Simon and Daphne, I'm here for all of it。 I do want to address the controversy because it is sensitive, but also I don't know the last time I felt this connected to and invested in a romance series right off the bat。 I can already tell it's something I will want to reread in the future。 That said, let's talk about the elephant in the room: the scene in question takes place after Simon and Daphne are married。 It's a complicated situation, and from this point on, you should expect spoilers。。。。SPOILER WARNING!Things to know: Simon started speaking late and had a stutter。 His complete asshole of a father called him stupid and wanted nothing to do with him。 Now his dad is dead, but he has vowed never to have children and doesn't plan to marry。 Which gets complicated when he gets frisky with Daphne and must marry her to preserve her reputation。。。。Daphne (like most young women of her day) has never taken sex ed and therefore knows virtually nothing about sex or how conception works。 This leads to some hilarious scenes and conversations, but it's also tragically historically accurate。 So when she marries Simon, she doesn't realize that when he says he "can't" have children, what he really means is he "won't" have children。 Nor does she realize what he's doing when he pulls out every time they have sex。 Simon takes advantage of her naivete, even knowing her intense desire for children, and basically lies to her for months。 Honestly, I found his behavior to be pretty reprehensible and selfish, even if we understand that it's rooted in trauma。 So when Daphne learns more about how things work and realizes she has been lied to, it sets off an understandably giant conflict where she (rightly in my opinion) tells Simon she will no longer be in his bed。 He gets very drunk and comes home asking her to stay with him and be with him。 This sets the stage for more horrible behavior where Daphne has sex with him and basically refuses to let him pull out。 Whew。 Okay, so there are people saying this is basically marital rape。 And reading the scene。。。kinda? It certainly has elements of dubious consent at the very least。 The thing is, it's not painted as okay, or as sexy in the book。 It's very clearly portrayed as wrong, but I also think from the perspective of a sheltered, relatively powerless young woman at the time, I kind of get it。 Selfish? Of course。 Both of them are selfish and do terrible things, but for me that was part of the point and part of how they learned and grew together。 And the behavior doesn't occur in a vacuum either- I think the author does a fantastic job of creating a nuanced portrait of what each of them has experienced and how that shapes their choices。 I am glad that a child didn't end up as the product of that night。 I would have had a harder time dealing with that, but it's a non-issue。 I also want to say, because I knew there was some kind of potentially problematic scene going in, it was obvious to me from pretty early on what was going to take place。 I hear some people say they were blindsided, but for me it was like watching a train barreling down the tracks。 And it's a real issue too, not that dissimilar from real life women who "forget" to take their birth control in hopes of having a baby their partner doesn't want。 Because while people are calling this rape, it's not actually the sex that was unwanted。 It was the potential pregnancy。 Which still isn't okay, but I appreciate that the author was engaging with that issue。 I've been mulling over my thoughts on this for awhile before I wrote this review because I do know it's a controversial one。 To readers who hated this and want nothing more to do with these characters, that's valid, especially if this is a personally triggering issue。 I imagine if it was written today rather than 20+ years ago, the author might handle it a little more carefully (admittedly we maybe could have used a bigger conversation about what happened between the characters later on), but I found it to be compelling and thought-provoking, and most of the book was just a whole lot of fun and made me laugh out loud on multiple occasions! I'm also super curious to see how they handle things in the Netflix adaptation。 But guys, I loved this book。 So very much。 。。。more

The last few years with reading has been hard for me with my depression。 I've been taking steps to find the reader in me again。 This book gave me hope。 Though it was slow for me to settle my brain to read, I wanted to at least finish a chapter a day。 But last night, after reading "Daphne, please," he said, "turn around。" and feeling that emotion from Simon and quite possible turning into goo right there in my bed next to my husband and my Husky, I couldn't stop reading。 I read until almost 2am The last few years with reading has been hard for me with my depression。 I've been taking steps to find the reader in me again。 This book gave me hope。 Though it was slow for me to settle my brain to read, I wanted to at least finish a chapter a day。 But last night, after reading "Daphne, please," he said, "turn around。" and feeling that emotion from Simon and quite possible turning into goo right there in my bed next to my husband and my Husky, I couldn't stop reading。 I read until almost 2am to finish this and the second epilogue。 I haven't done that in years。 Lost track of time and just read。 I swear when I was done I was shocked at the late hour。 I haven't been so invested in a family since I was in the 6th grade finding my first Jude Devereaux book and meeting the Montgomery's。 This series is truly giving me hope that the reader in me isn't lost, she just needed an extended pause for station identification。So did I love this? Me daba penita y ternura que fuese tartamudo 🥺。 。。。more

I blew through The Duke and I - it was the PERFECT brain candy distraction to take breaks from the real world。 I really enjoyed the witty banter, the plot took some interesting turns before the happy ever after, and I thought it was interesting timing to read a fictional account of someone overcoming a stutter when we just elected Joe Biden。 I cant wait to devour more and watch the adaptation on Netflix! For more reviews and bookish musings visit http://www。bornandreadinchicago。com/ I blew through The Duke and I - it was the PERFECT brain candy distraction to take breaks from the real world。 I really enjoyed the witty banter, the plot took some interesting turns before the happy ever after, and I thought it was interesting timing to read a fictional account of someone overcoming a stutter when we just elected Joe Biden。 I can’t wait to devour more and watch the adaptation on Netflix! For more reviews and bookish musings visit http://www。bornandreadinchicago。com/ 。。。more

Just not explicit。 It’s the wife that take advantage of her husband。 It’s does not start near the beginning, but like in middle of the book。Let’s start with the main character, Daphne Bridgerton, I absolutely loved at her, she was sarcastic, brave, honest, and funny。 She was like the character I wanted in every character I read in the books。 She wanted kids, I believe this the plot of the book。 It stopped right after the duel between her brother and Simon did I really dislike her。 Like everything that happened after the marriage became awkward。 She became selfish and yes I understand you have dreams of having a family, you will take risks to have that come true。 I just wish the risk was not taking advantage of your husband while he is half asleep and half drunk。 THAT IS RAPE。 She did not apologize and did not feel bad afterwards。 After many times Simon said he does not want kids。 Anyways, then there’s sweet Simon。 In the book Simon is described as a rake (player)。 He is charming, flirty, handsome and sarcastic。 Reading into the story, you start to understand why he is the way he is。 At a young age Simon could not speak and when he did he will stutter。 He has a stutter。 His dad did not like that his only son could not speak, he practically shunned him, refusing to talk to him and even going low at to say he has no son。 When Simon first met daphne I was rooting for their relationship, they had chemistry, both were sarcastic, and both adorable when together。 Everything was perfect, until the duel came Simon was ready to die and not marry daphne。 So Simon gave her a choice marry him and have no kids or not marry him。 She took the first choice。 Daphne knew what she getting herself into。 Marry the guy she loves and live happily ever after right? No。 As stated at the first paragraph, she was selfish and took advantage of her husband。 Simon was vey clear he couldn’t/ didn’t want kids yet she didn’t took that to consideration, she was thinking of herself and not Simon。 I just really wish that he left her and not went to her after that happened。 Anyways, the book was good, and then it wasn’t。 I probably will never read a book from this author because of this solely。 Go Simon! Boo Daphne! 。。。more

Frankly, the (view spoiler)[rape scene (hide spoiler)] really undoes all the work that Julia Quinn might have put into this relationship otherwise。 For me as a reader, this is nonnegotiable。 (view spoiler)[If a character understands what they're getting from another before they embark in a relationship together, they can't then feign ignorance or be upset when that reality turns out to be exactly as described。 It doesn't matter that Simon never CLARIFIED that he just doesn't want kids, as Frankly, the (view spoiler)[rape scene (hide spoiler)] really undoes all the work that Julia Quinn might have put into this relationship otherwise。 For me as a reader, this is nonnegotiable。 (view spoiler)[If a character understands what they're getting from another before they embark in a relationship together, they can't then feign ignorance or be upset when that reality turns out to be exactly as described。 It doesn't matter that Simon never CLARIFIED that he just doesn't want kids, as opposed to not being physically able to。 The only important thing is that he doesn't want them, and stated as such。 For Daphne to know about that, agree to a marriage anyway, get upset about it upon learning the truth, and then force herself onto him in order to get what she wants is an absolute dealbreaker。 This is not even getting into progressive politics or what is and isn't problematic — this is a fundamental lack of respect for another person。 (hide spoiler)] For that reason, I think this book really cheats a reader out of the HEA, because it's built off something so problematic that it's irredeemable。 。。。more

I'll try to keep it quick。 If consent is important to you, DO NOT READ THIS BOOK!!!!!! That goes triple if you are childfree because this is a nightmare scenario。 I calmed down and kept reading but that horrible scene left me shaking with disgust and completely ruined my day。 It all ends well but it definitely stained the entire story for me and I just couldn't enjoy the rest of it。

After watching the Netflix trailer for the new Bridgerton show, I knew I had to read this series again。 I read this a long time ago back when I thought I was too young to read these kind of novels and I thought no one my age read them。 But now, I see people around my age getting in on the historical fiction and discussing them, a discussion I like to get in on。 Though this wasn't my very first regency novel, I started to read this when I first started getting into the regency genre but I would After watching the Netflix trailer for the new Bridgerton show, I knew I had to read this series again。 I read this a long time ago back when I thought I was too young to read these kind of novels and I thought no one my age read them。 But now, I see people around my age getting in on the historical fiction and discussing them, a discussion I like to get in on。 Though this wasn't my very first regency novel, I started to read this when I first started getting into the regency genre but I would like to consider this one my first series since the first one didn't have as good of a story and fun characters。 The first thing I learned from regency novels was that feminism was practically non-existent in these novels but still there。 I wouldn't say that I'm a feminist but I'm someone who believes in equality。 So for those big feminists, I'm not sure I would recommend this genre to since the regency era was more rigid in its patriarchy。 But in my experience with regency novels, you just have to pick up the right one to get a good heroine who casts off the conventions of her society, a society that says a woman has to act a certain way。 For the main heroine, Daphne, it is true in some respects but she is not a character that I totally admired the first time around。 Before reading this the second time, I totally forgot why I didn't like this novel as much as the other ones but I knew it had to do with Daphne。 Julia Quinn tried to portray her as the feminist character of her actually "saving" the hero instead of the other way around。 But femininity can go too far sometimes。 Without spoiling anything, I can't say much just that in other books questioning the gray areas of bumping uglies can turn ugly especially if it's a less common encounter。Let's just say that while I agreed with Daphne that Simon's hatred consumed his life, she went about it in a completely selfish way。Something else I learned in regency novels that I'm sorta wishy washy on is the insta-lust thing that most of them have。 The Hero usually has an immediate attraction to the heroine because she is beautiful and they have 'it' on the brain。 While I'm not a big fan of Daphne, I loved how Simon and Daphne build up to a sort of friendship, And while it did have some lust on the part of Simon, he also did admire her spirit and personality in the beginning。 Not to mention that Daphne accepted all of who Simon is。 Even though this book was not my most favourite in the series, I remembered how much I loved the rest of them。 This first novel already gives a feel for the other Bridgertons and their witty personality quirks plus their banter。 All in all, though this book was not a total favourite, it does pave the way for the rest of the stories of the other Bridgertons。 。。。more
