Summary

“One of the best thrillers of the year! Kepler treats us readers to a nonstop roller coaster of suspense, taking us deep into the hearts and minds of perfectly realized characters。 And, oh, what a villain! Lazarus is the definition of a one-sitting read!” —Jeffery Deaver, New York Times best-selling author of The Goodbye Man

Sometimes the past won't stay buried。

All across Europe, the most ruthless criminals are suffering gruesome deaths。 At first, it seems coincidental that their underworld affiliations are finally catching up to them。 But when two of the victims are found to have disturbing connections to Detective Joona Linna, it becomes clear that there’s a single killer at work。 Still, police are reluctant to launch an investigation。 If a mysterious vigilante is making their jobs easier, why stand in his way? Joona, however, is convinced this is no would-be hero。 These deaths serve a much darker purpose。

Desperate for help, Joona turns to Saga Bauer。 If his hunch is correct, she’s one of the few people who stands a chance at bringing this criminal mastermind down。 But Saga is fighting her own demons—and the killer knows just how to use them to his advantage。 He continues to strike with impunity, and no one, it seems, is safe。 When the killer begins targeting those closest to Saga and Joona, it appears more and more likely that Joona has been right all along, and that tracking down the person responsible will force him to confront a ghost from his past 。 。 。 the most terrifying villain he’s ever had to face。

In Kepler’s relentlessly grim seventh Killer Instinct novel (after 2018’s The Rabbit Hunter), Joona Linna, a superintendent with Sweden’s National Crimes Unit, who has “solved more complex murder cases than anyone else in Scandinavia,” returns to active duty after completing a community service sentence following time in prison for assault。 Meanwhile, a suspected grave robber is murdered in Oslo, and in his refrigerator is the skull of Linna’s late wife, which the robber apparently dug up in Sweden and brought home to Norway。 The dead man has whip marks on his back, injuries similar to those Linna saw on the brother of his dead Hannibal Lecter–like adversary, Jurek Walter, in a previous outing。 In Germany, those same injuries show up on the body of another murdered criminal, who made a call to Linna’s cellphone shortly before his death。 Linna becomes convinced that Walter is still alive and recruiting men across Europe to serve as accomplices in his crimes。 Kepler (the pen name of a husband-wife writing team) maintains an almost unbearable level of tension throughout and does an outstanding job of making readers fear that anyone could die a horrible death at any time。 Fans of serial killer fiction won’t want to miss this one。 Agent: Niclas Salomonsson, Salomonsson Agency (Sweden)。 (Dec。)

Prologue

The light of the white sky reveals the world in all its cruelty, the way it must have appeared to Lazarus outside the tomb。

The ribbed metal floor is vibrating beneath the priest’s feet。 He clings to the railing with one hand and tries to maintain his balance with his walking stick in the other。

The gray sea is billowing like a tent canvas。

The ferry is being drawn along the two steel cables stretched between the islands。 They rise, dripping out of the water in front of the boat, and sink back down behind it。

The ferry master brakes as foaming waves swell up and the gangplank extends with a clatter to the concrete jetty。

The priest stumbles slightly when the prow bumps the jetty。 The jolt reverberates through the hull。

He’s here to visit the retired churchwarden Erland Lind, who didn’t show up for the Advent service in Länna Church as he usually does。

Erland lives in the parish’s cottage behind Högmarsö Chapel。 He suffers from dementia, but still gets paid to cut the grass and salt the driveway in icy weather。

The priest walks along the winding gravel path, his face turning numb in the cold air。 There’s no one in sight, but just before he reaches the chapel he hears the shriek of a lathe from the dry dock down in the boatyard。

He can no longer remember the Bible quote he tweeted that morning。 He had been thinking of repeating it to Erland。

Against the backdrop of flat farmland and the strip of forest, the white chapel almost looks as if it’s made of snow。

Because the church is shut for the winter, the priest walks directly to the small cottage and knocks on the door with his stick, waits, then goes inside。

“Erland?”

There’s no one home。 He stamps his shoes and looks around。 The kitchen is a mess。 The priest gets out the bag of cinnamon buns he brought and puts it down on the table, next to a foil tray with leftover mashed potatoes, dried-up gravy, and two gray meatballs。

The lathe down by the shore falls silent。

The priest goes outside, tries the door to the chapel, then looks into the unlocked garage。

There’s a muddy shovel and a black plastic bucket full of rusting rattraps on the floor。

He uses his stick to lift the plastic covering a snowblower, but stops when he hears a distant moaning sound。

He goes back outside and walks over to the ruins of the old crematorium on the edge of the forest。 The oven and the sooty stump of its chimney stick up from the tall weeds。

The priest walks around a stack of wooden pallets。 He can’t help looking over his shoulder。

He’s had an ominous feeling ever since he boarded the ferry。

There’s nothing reassuring about the light today。

He hears the odd moaning again, closer。 It sounds like a calf trapped in a box。

He stops and stands still。

Everything is quiet。 His breath steams from his mouth。

Behind the compost heap there’s a patch of muddy, trodden ground。 A bag of mulch leans against a tree。

The priest walks toward it but stops when he reaches a half-meter-long metal pipe sticking out of the ground。 Perhaps it marks the property’s boundary。

Leaning on his stick, he looks up at the forest and sees a path covered with pine needles and cones。

The wind is whistling through the treetops, and a solitary crow caws in the distance。

The priest turns around, and hears the strange moaning sound behind him。 He picks up his pace。 He passes the crematorium and cottage, and glances over his shoulder。 All he wants right now is to get back to his vicarage and sit down in front of the fire with a glass of whiskey。

This book should come with a bold print warning about the violence。 I made it halfway through but could not take any more after the elderly woman with dementia was batting a severed head of a man around with her cane。 I have enjoyed the other books in the Joona Linna series。 My non-completion of the books makes it difficult for a review。 With than in mind and knowing that there are other readers who would love a book with a psychopath like Hannibal Lecter, I am channeling my brother’s reaction。 This book should come with a bold print warning about the violence。 I made it halfway through but could not take any more after the elderly woman with dementia was batting a severed head of a man around with her cane。 I have enjoyed the other books in the Joona Linna series。 My non-completion of the books makes it difficult for a review。 With than in mind and knowing that there are other readers who would love a book with a psychopath like Hannibal Lecter, I am channeling my brother’s reaction。 He would love it。 The characters are well-developed, and the plot is electrifying, but just be warned it isn’t for everyone。 Jurek Walter, Linna’s nemesis, was introduced in the fourth book, and readers thought he had been killed, but he hasn’t and he returns to wreak havoc and death in the seventh book。 。。。more

Lazarus is the 7th book in the Joona Linna series from Lars Kepler。"Someone is killing criminals in Europe - some with ties to Joona。 He thought that he was rid of Jurek Walter - Sweden's most notorious serial killer。 But now it looks like there may be a chance he is back - even when the evidence points to his death。 Joona is convinced Jurek is back, but no one believes him。 So he must protect his daughter at all costs。 And even that may not be enough。。。"This was my first read of the Joona Linna Lazarus is the 7th book in the Joona Linna series from Lars Kepler。"Someone is killing criminals in Europe - some with ties to Joona。 He thought that he was rid of Jurek Walter - Sweden's most notorious serial killer。 But now it looks like there may be a chance he is back - even when the evidence points to his death。 Joona is convinced Jurek is back, but no one believes him。 So he must protect his daughter at all costs。 And even that may not be enough。。。"This was my first read of the Joona Linna series。 I normally like to start a series at the beginning。 It felt like I missed a little background, but I was still able to follow the story。This maight be the scariest fictional killer I have ever come across。 Jurek is relentless and able to prey upon the fears of the people he is manipulating。 There is no one he will not kill if it means getting what he wants。This book is long but fast-paced - the story moves along quickly。 You find yourself yelling at characters to "Shoot him!" but of course they don't。 Some shocking deaths will leave you stunned。 And the ending will have you catching your breath。 Will he or won't he?Fans of Nordic crime fiction should enjoy this read。 Excuse me while I look for the reast of the Joona Linna series。 。。。more

My ThoughtsThere has never been a more terrifying fictional serial killer, in my opinion, than Jurek Walter。  We first met him in book #4 The Sandman where Saga Bauer was convinced she killed him。  Now there is a new madman cleaning up Sweden's worst of the worst, but Joona is convinced the killer is Jurek's newest puppet。  Joona's biggest concern now is his daughter, Lumi ,who is studying in Paris。  Thankfully they had tirelessly trained for this moment, but soon learned you can't hide for long My ThoughtsThere has never been a more terrifying fictional serial killer, in my opinion, than Jurek Walter。  We first met him in book #4 The Sandman where Saga Bauer was convinced she killed him。  Now there is a new madman cleaning up Sweden's worst of the worst, but Joona is convinced the killer is Jurek's newest puppet。  Joona's biggest concern now is his daughter, Lumi ,who is studying in Paris。  Thankfully they had tirelessly trained for this moment, but soon learned you can't hide for long。  Unfortunately nobody but Joona believes that Jurek is alive so they don't follow his orders to protect the ones he cares about after he flees, and they disappear。  Now time is of the essence because two people are buried alive and if Jurek is alive, he has more people working for him than Joona and Saga could have imagined。I could go on and on about this one, but I will stop。  If you love the Joona Linna Series, you definitely need to grab this one!  Fast paced, edge of your seat, nail biting suspense。  Add some graphic details and you have one heck of a thriller。  This one comes out December 1st! This was an addicting, dark, and thrilling read。 I am definitely intrigued with going back to read the rest of the series。 While this was book 7, I didn’t feel very lost however I think some of the shock vaLue would have been increased had I picked up the prior books first。

A fresh take on the serial killer genre, Kepler’s new novel falls into one of my favorite mystery categories: dark, twisted, bloody & ultra nordic noir。 Heart-pumping, with a scaringly smart antagonist in the Swedish serial killer Jurek Walter, you’ll find your head swimming from intricate plots and desperate characters。 This is technically part of a series but I just dived right in。 Fans of The Chestnut Man will enjoy this one!

This was my first book by Lars Kepler, a Swedish husband and wife duo writing Joona Linna Nordic noir thriller series under a common pen name。 I received a free review copy from NetGalley and ended up starting with book seven of the immensely popular series, but I gave it a go nonetheless。Lazarus wasn’t necessarily the best book to start with, as it wasn’t a stand-alone like some thrillers are, where action matters more than the characters’ personal lives。 Every character came with a heavy bagga This was my first book by Lars Kepler, a Swedish husband and wife duo writing Joona Linna Nordic noir thriller series under a common pen name。 I received a free review copy from NetGalley and ended up starting with book seven of the immensely popular series, but I gave it a go nonetheless。Lazarus wasn’t necessarily the best book to start with, as it wasn’t a stand-alone like some thrillers are, where action matters more than the characters’ personal lives。 Every character came with a heavy baggage I knew nothing about, likely accumulated through several books already。 Most importantly, the old emotional and psychological scars of the main character, Joona Linna, surface when the severed head of his late wife is found in a freezer of a murder victim, and they influence much of his actions。 Since I hadn’t been there from the start, it took me a while to enter into the emotions of the characters and I wasn’t able to anticipate some of the punches。That being said, all the backstory that mattered for the plot was explained well enough and I had no trouble following the story or feeling the tension build。 I hadn’t been there for the original hunt of the serial killer in focus here, but even I could surmise that though he is presumed dead, the killer is back。 There were some other details left out though, that I would’ve wanted to know, like how old is the main character, for example, or why he had been in prison yet allowed to return to the police force, but I could ignore them and concentrate on the plot that kept me in its grip to the end。This is very dark Nordic noir, with graphic details and psychological evil。 Writing is in present tense, which adds to the sense of immediacy, though the narrative style was slightly distancing at times。 The NetGalley copy had no chapter breaks, so there were no breathers to ease the pace either (maybe this is the case with the finished product too?)。 There were many point of view characters and I didn’t connect with all of them, but their subplots mattered in the overall story。 And as a Finn, it tickled me that the main character is Finnish。 I think I got more out of him than most readers of the English version。 The translation by Neil Smith was good and there was no attempt to anglicise the Nordic names, which suited me, but might be a bit difficult for English readers。If you’re a fan of Nordic noir, I can recommend this book。 But if you’re new to the series, maybe don’t start with this one; read the other six books first。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Disappointing and predictable。 Unfortunately doesn’t live up to the previous 6 books。 I hope this isn’t a trend as it seems as though there will be another。 The arch nemesis of Joona returns, has one arm and still somehow kills a veteran in a knife battle who is suggested to be one of the best with a knife。 3* rating as with the return of Jurek I feel it’s only fair to compare this to the Sandman。

Or is there a copy cat killer at large ? Several clues hint that Walter might have survived and, if so, Joona has to, once again, face the man who has destroyed his life; a born killer; sadistically emotionally torturing his victims before driving them to suicide。 If not, there is a new monster on the loose; someone with a vendetta against Joona who will not rest before he is destroyed。 The novel is extremely fast paced; dark; violent and challenges the reader to become involved in Joona’s race against time; trying to save those he loves from someone who is hellbent to cause him the maximum amount of pain and anguish; someone with no conscience; driven only by rage。 The Joona Linna-series started with ‘The hypnotist’ and ‘Lazarus’ is the seventh。 Although Jurek Walter has been introduced earlier (in ‘Sandman’) readers will have no problem reading this novel as a standalone。 The series is not for the faint hearted; readers who enjoy Scandinavian thriller writers like Nesbo and Mankell, will also enjoy Kepler, although the plots in Kepler’s novels are generally more intricate and gruesome than those of the aforementioned authors。 Trivia regarding the author: Lars Kepler is a pseudonym for a Swedish husband and wife writing team who has sold more than 14 million books internationally。 I enjoyed every of the 500+ pages of this novel and do not hesitate to allocate 5 stars。#Uitdieperdsebek 。。。more

I floundered a little at the start because clearly, this story began in at least one, more likely more, earlier books。 For example the main character, police officer Joona Linna (apparently a superintendent although you wouldn’t know it from this book) has recently come out of prison and, after finishing the book, I still don’t know why he went to prison。Not to worry, the story soon got going and I forgot about minor issues like backstory as I was swept away in this rather long and intricately plotted, very tense story。 Jurek Walter was one of the worst killers Sweden had ever seen。 He had been in a secure psychiatric facility but had escaped。 Then, whilst on the run with his twin brother, Igor, he was apparently shot dead by Saga Bauer, a young and very capable policewoman working with Joona。 Joona himself had shot and killed the brother。 Jurek fell into a body of water and was swept away, presumed dead。 But a series of strange coincidences signals to Joona that Jurek is alive and still orchestrating events。 He has also apparently acquired another partner to do much his dirty work, replacing his brother。Jurek doesn’t actually live for the killing, although he does it with ruthless efficiency。 No, his goal, his reason for living almost, is to destroy the loved ones of his enemies leaving them so alone and wracked with guilt that they usually end up killing themselves。 And Jurek is almost unstoppable。 He moves like a ghost and is utterly, utterly implacable。 Relentless。 I think this is one of the few books that really did raise my blood pressure! If you need an ending where everyone lives happily ever after - this is not a book for you。 But if you like nail biting suspense, drama and lots of shocks you should really enjoy this。 Just be warned - a lot of people die in this story。 4。5 stars rounded down because I thought it was a little long。 Thanks to Netgalley, the publishers and Lars Kepler for providing a copy for review。 My opinions are my own。 。。。more

SPENNENDE。 Hinsides usannsynlig。。 men altså spenningen! Forfatterne hadde oppmerksomheten min i over 13 timer lydbok。 DET er godt gjort。 Ordnet meg Storytell for første gang (!) fordi boka kom da aldri ut på CD (bruker å låne på biblioteket)。

This was such an awesome read! Lars Kepler really knows how to get into your head。 Everything is so vividly described that it feels like you are a part of the investigation。 Joona Linna is such a likeable character。 I would totally want him on my side if I were ever in trouble。 The work he puts into keeping his daughter and loved ones safe is amazing。 There were a few parts of the story that I felt dragged on a bit, but quickly picked back up every time。 I felt so many emotions reading this book This was such an awesome read! I was told before I started reading this that if you want to know more of the backstory to this story you should read The Sandman first。 I have not read that one yet and still felt this was a great stand alone。 。。。more

Larson is part of an eight books series。 This is book seven in the Joona Linna series。 Joona Linna is a Swedish detective who investigates murders。 Joona is haunted by the ghost of Jurek, the serial killer who was shot and killed years ago by Saga。 He’s not convinced Jurek is dead after two victims showed disturbing connections to prior killings。 A mysterious killer is brutally murdering Europe's most loathsome criminals。 Joona believes Jurek has recruited someone to send him a message。 Jonna mu Larson is part of an eight books series。 This is book seven in the Joona Linna series。 Joona Linna is a Swedish detective who investigates murders。 Joona is haunted by the ghost of Jurek, the serial killer who was shot and killed years ago by Saga。 He’s not convinced Jurek is dead after two victims showed disturbing connections to prior killings。 A mysterious killer is brutally murdering Europe's most loathsome criminals。 Joona believes Jurek has recruited someone to send him a message。 Jonna must convince his team that Jurek is still alive。 Overall:This ARC was difficult to read with no chapter breaks。 It’s reads like one long run on sentence。 It doesn’t transition well at all。 It’s choppy。 Since this is an ARC it might not be the final version。 Even so a few spaces or a chapter reference would help。 There were times in the story where too many details overcrowded the book。 The step by step process of every move didn’t advance the plot。 I’m not sure of the timeline of this story but it seems unfathomable how quickly the killer worked moving from one scene to the next。 Then there’s the unknown time of how long the killer kept some victims in the coffin。 The premise of the story was very exciting, but I struggled with the delivery。 The way the information was executed was not smooth。 The book was too long。 Lars stretched and prolonged this book beyond reasonable means。 If I were to base my review on the premise I would give this book 5⭐️s。 Unfortunately, I skimmed through this book from beginning to end cutting out the minute details。 Had the chapters been identified this would’ve read easier。 I do like the way the detective team gathered information。 Joona has dedicated his life to hunting killers。 His process to investigate Jurek was the most interesting aspect of this book。 They are seasoned professionals that took charge immediately。 They picked up the pieces from the last book with no hitches。 Although, I had to refer back to the book description to gain a better understanding about what I was reading。 Delving into this book with no prior knowledge was not a good idea。 I’m starting this series with book 7。 Maybe that’s a disadvantage, maybe not。 I’d recommend reading from the beginning。 This is a character driven story with many graphic kills。 The killer is unapologetic in his killings。 Sadly this leaves little to no hope of survival。 Essentially every kidnapping leads to a brutal death。 Trying to remain hopeful that Joona can stop the killer seems unlikely。 As a reader this became exhausting knowing this killer was unstoppable。 Lars Kepler is the pseudonym of husband and wife team Alexandra Coelho Ahndoril and Alexander Ahndoril, authors of the Joona Linna series。 With seven installments to date, the series has sold more than 14 million copies in 40 languages。 This book was translated to English。 This book reads well enough。 I am struggling with the Swedish police procedures and locations as I’m more familiar with the US locations and the US police procedures。The Joona Linna series follows Joona Linna, Detective Superintendent at the police's National Operations Department, Saga Bauer, an Operational Superintendent at the Swedish Security Service。 。。。more
