Summary

Featuring his famous literary detective Atticus Pund and Susan Ryeland, hero of the worldwide bestseller Magpie Murders, a brilliantly complex literary thriller with echoes of Agatha Christie from New York Times bestselling author Anthony Horowitz。

Retired publisher Susan Ryeland is living the good life。 She is running a small hotel on a Greek island with her long-term boyfriend Andreas。 It should be everything she's always wanted。 But is it? She's exhausted with the responsibilities of making everything work on an island where nothing ever does, and truth be told she's beginning to miss London。

And then the Trehearnes come to stay。 The strange and mysterious story they tell, about an unfortunate murder that took place on the same day and in the same hotel in which their daughter was married—a picturesque inn on the Suffolk coast named Farlingaye Hall—fascinates Susan and piques her editor’s instincts。

One of her former writers, the late Alan Conway, author of the fictional Magpie Murders, knew the murder victim—an advertising executive named Frank Parris—and once visited Farlingaye Hall。 Conway based the third book in his detective series, Atticus Pund Takes the Cake, on that very crime。

The Trehearne’s, daughter, Cecily, read Conway’s mystery and believed the book proves that the man convicted of Parris’s murder—a Romanian immigrant who was the hotel’s handyman—is innocent。 When the Trehearnes reveal that Cecily is now missing, Susan knows that she must return to England and find out what really happened。

Brilliantly clever, relentlessly suspenseful, full of twists that will keep readers guessing with each revelation and clue, Moonflower Murders is a deviously dark take on vintage English crime fiction from one of its greatest masterminds, Anthony Horowitz。

I'm with Jan B's review: book within a book not entertaining。 Flipped forward to end BC I couldn't keep the characters in the main book and the book within the book's characters straight。 Nothing like having an author confuse the heck out of you。 I'm with Jan B's review: book within a book not entertaining。 Flipped forward to end BC I couldn't keep the characters in the main book and the book within the book's characters straight。 Nothing like having an author confuse the heck out of you。 。。。more

Was not as enamored with this book as I was with his previous mysteries。 It lacked the humor and the characters were not as interesting。The plot started off good, but lost interest and track of characters too。 By the end of the book I could barely remembered who was killed and didn't really care why。The storyline of Susan and her Greek boyfriend was just not believable。 I know it's fiction, but at least try to make it somewhat plausible。Still, I so enjoyed his previous books that I look forward Was not as enamored with this book as I was with his previous mysteries。 It lacked the humor and the characters were not as interesting。The plot started off good, but lost interest and track of characters too。 By the end of the book I could barely remembered who was killed and didn't really care why。The storyline of Susan and her Greek boyfriend was just not believable。 I know it's fiction, but at least try to make it somewhat plausible。Still, I so enjoyed his previous books that I look forward to his next mystery。 I adored the House of Silk and hope that he writes more of that Victorian Gothic style of book。 。。。more

Utter brilliance。 two books for the price of one, Following on from Magpie Murders with Susan Ryeland at the helm, yet another mystery to solve and how cleverly that is plotted。 Two whodunnits for the price of one, the fictional Atticus Pund has the key to a present day mystery, I loved it。

Clever。 Enjoyed it。

3。5 - but rounding up because i think i was too harsh on the first one - enjoyable British murder mystery even if (again) I felt the murderer was obvious。 There’s definitely something to be said for the HOW-dunnit in these murder mysteries。

Another juicy “who done it” book within a book by Horowitz。 I love this author and his style!! I can’t go into a whole lot of detail without spoiling the story, so you’ll have to read it yourself!!

If you like Golden Age classic crime novels you will love this book。 Having read the previous book, Magpie Murders, I looked forward to reading Moonflower Murders。 Again the plot is cleverly written as a book within a book, with two crime stories running concurrently。If you like a good whodunnit with red herrings and twists and turns, you will not be disappointed with this smart well plottted, novel。I would recommend this cosy read。

Quite fun - a frivolous read。

another long murder mystery by Anthony HOrowitz, set up again as a book within a book。 I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Magpie Murders, although I liked the characters。 Susan Ryeland and her partner Andreas, and of course Atticus Punt。 The whole thing was pretty convoluted, difficult to figure out。 another long murder mystery by Anthony HOrowitz, set up again as a book within a book。 I didn't enjoy it quite as much as Magpie Murders, although I liked the characters。 Susan Ryeland and her partner Andreas, and of course Atticus Punt。 The whole thing was pretty convoluted, difficult to figure out。 。。。more

A book in a book!! I absolutely loved this book, it was so good。 The book was huge and I thought it would take me days to read it, but when I started it I couldn't put it down。 The story was really good and I loved the book inside the book。 The only downside was I felt like a right wally at not being able to figure out but as the story was so good I don't care to much。 I really can't wait for the next one in the series if there is one 🤞🤞🤞 A book in a book!! I think the tiny details Susan figures out regarding the murder are a bit of a stretch--quite a lot to just suddenly come together in her mind。 But I love the intricacies of these books, as well as getting two novels for the price of one! It's really pleasant to be entertained in such a clever, intelligent way, and all in homage of books and writing。 I think the tiny details Susan figures out regarding the murder are a bit of a stretch--quite a lot to just suddenly come together in her mind。 But I love the intricacies of these books, as well as getting two novels for the price of one! Horowitz and GaysEvery gay character in The Moonflower Murders is vain, anarchistic, materialistic, vapid, campy and attractive if they are young--perverted if they are old, kinky, petty, and less dimensional than gay characters on 90's sitcoms。 Rent boys, pedophile red herrings, and limp-wristed cackling--it just became infuriating to read。 Gay characters don't have to be nice but make them realistic, please。I loved The Magpie Murders as well as The Word is Murder。 I expected to have a ton of f Horowitz and GaysEvery gay character in The Moonflower Murders is vain, anarchistic, materialistic, vapid, campy and attractive if they are young--perverted if they are old, kinky, petty, and less dimensional than gay characters on 90's sitcoms。 Rent boys, pedophile red herrings, and limp-wristed cackling--it just became infuriating to read。 Gay characters don't have to be nice but make them realistic, please。I loved The Magpie Murders as well as The Word is Murder。 I expected to have a ton of fun with Horowitz's latest mystery。 Firstly--the plot was okay, the murder interesting enough, but the book-within-a-book element was less compelling than in The Magpie Murders。 All that is to say, if there weren't other elements of the book I struggled with, I would call it a fine mystery。 Not great, but not bad。Unfortunately, there are a number of gay characters in the book that are one-dimensional。 Many of them have the stereotypical traits that have fueled homophobic rhetoric for decades。 Horowitz is better than this。 I'm not sure what he was thinking or how this got past editors。MINOR SPOILER-- the moment I noticed this trend in the book, I knew exactly who the killer was because it was obvious that Horowitz was going to use a GAY PAST element to motivate the killer。 Yes, someone's sexual past with men is the major twist of the book, though the character takes pains to make sure everyone knows he isn't gay despite his history。 I thought we were past the SURPRISE HE'S A GAY twist。 I don't get it。 I'm sure some people won't mind or even notice。 I don't believe I am particularly sensitive to being offended, but it was just so constantly misguided that I couldn't not post a review。 I haven't seen anyone mention this, so maybe it is just me, but if the things I listed sound like red flags for you, you might not enjoy the book。For anyone who loved the book, I'm glad you loved it。 I am not trying to ruin anyone's enjoyment, but I wish I had known this was in the book before I read it and would like to pass the information along。 。。。more

3。5 - Certainly twisty, but so many of the clues for the larger mystery felt overly highbrow and the rampant homophobia pissed me off。 I did, however, appreciate the critiques of the prison system and sentencing paradigms。 In many ways, I would have preferred to read just the Atticus Pünd plotline and forget about the present day。

What a wild read! Horowitz masters the novel within a novel within a novel format。 I was truly surprised on all fronts。

Woweeee! This had me on the edge of my seat。 Anthony Horowitz has a way of putting a book within a book。 You get a lot of bang for your buck by being treated to not 1 but 2 mysteries and whodunits。 This was wonderfully written。 It was entertaining。 I am a big fan of Magpie Murders and I think that Moonflower Murders was even better! I am really hoping that there will be a third Susan Ryeland installment to this series。

Colette

Confusing! One murder story at a time is good for me。 The redeeming feature of the book for me was the love story between Susan and Andreas。
