Summary

In New York Times bestselling author Linda Castillo’s new thriller, a rebellious Amish woman leaves the Plain life, but the secrets she takes with her will lead Chief of Police Kate Burkholder down a dark path to danger and death。

When a young woman is found murdered in a Painters Mill motel, Chief of Police Kate Burkholder is shocked to discover she once knew the victim。 Rachael Schwartz was a charming but troubled Amish girl who left the fold years ago and fled Painters Mill。 Why was she back in town? And who would kill her so brutally?

Kate remembers Rachael as the only girl who was as bad at being Amish as Kate was—and those parallels dog her。 But the deeper Kate digs into Rachael Schwartz’s life, the more she’s convinced that Rachael’s dubious reputation was deserved。 As a child, Rachael was a rowdy rulebreaker whose decision to leave devastated her parents and best friend。 As an adult, she was charismatic and beautiful, a rabble-rouser with a keen eye for opportunity no matter who got in her way。 Her no-holds-barred lifestyle earned her a lot of love and enemies aplenty—both English and Amish。

As the case heats to a fever pitch and long-buried secrets resurface, a killer haunts Painters Mill。 Someone doesn’t want Rachael’s past—or the mysteries she took with her to the grave—coming to light。 As Kate digs deeper, violence strikes again, this time hitting close to home。 Will Kate uncover the truth and bring a murderer to justice? Or will a killer bent on protecting a terrible past, stop her once and for all—and let the fallen be forgotten?

Another short story in Painter Mills involving a missing two year old。 Sheriff Kate Burkholder to the rescue as the Amish community bands together to find the child in the wake of a record breaking storm。 When the mother disappears Kate is sure there’s more to the story。

I listened to this audiobook, and although this is my first Kate Birkholder book, it will not be my last。 I'm late to the party on this great crime series! The narrator did a great job of making each character sound unique, and I loved the layers of mystery pulling me in to question every character in the story, wondering if they were the person who violently killed Rachael Schwartz, a sassy, young, former Amish woman with a long list of people she'd "wronged。"I enjoyed learning more about Amish I listened to this audiobook, and although this is my first Kate Birkholder book, it will not be my last。 I'm late to the party on this great crime series! The narrator did a great job of making each character sound unique, and I loved the layers of mystery pulling me in to question every character in the story, wondering if they were the person who violently killed Rachael Schwartz, a sassy, young, former Amish woman with a long list of people she'd "wronged。"I enjoyed learning more about Amish life, their beliefs, community, and interaction with those outside the Amish community。Chief of Police, Kate, is a likeable, hard-working, never-give-up kind of woman, and a character I want to know better through her previous books。I especially enjoyed the audiobook extra at the end of the story where the author and narrator sort of interview each other。 It was a good glimpse into the author's process over the years with Kate's stories。Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing me this interesting novel that kept me guessing right up until the murderer was revealed! 。。。more

It says something about an author who creates a character that I find endearing just a little more after each book。 That is the case with Kate Burkholder。 I admire this intriguing woman and have not grown even a little bitty bored with her even after thirteen books which Fallen by Linda Castillo certainly is。 Also I love seeing her with Tomasetti。 Every scene with him she just shines。 This time my favorite police chief almost doesn’t make it。 So while the guilty party in the murder at the motel It says something about an author who creates a character that I find endearing just a little more after each book。 That is the case with Kate Burkholder。 I admire this intriguing woman and have not grown even a little bitty bored with her even after thirteen books which Fallen by Linda Castillo certainly is。 Also I love seeing her with Tomasetti。 Every scene with him she just shines。 This time my favorite police chief almost doesn’t make it。 So while the guilty party in the murder at the motel is figured out pretty soon by me。 I read on knowing that more is to come。 Boy, does it ever。Chief of Police Kate Burkholder doesn’t have any high ideals about the Amish, knowing that some can be capable of bad as well as good gives her a realistic approach to dealing with the crime in the community she serves。 Sometimes it is not only the ones who have left but also ones who tricked themselves in thinking God will back them。 Even she is shocked this time, “What I can’t reconcile is that these … were willing to commit multiple violent crimes—including murder—to protect their secrets。 What they did goes against the very foundation of what it means to be Amish。 How could they possibly believe that God would forgive them their sins and they would be welcomed into heaven? Were the stakes so high that they convinced themselves the risk of hell was worth the gain?” A serious question only the guilty could answer。 An ARC of the book was provided by the publisher through NetGalley which I voluntarily chose to read and reviewed。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 。。。more

This one really hits close to home for Kate on many levels。 From her knowing the victim as a baby, to the things that Kate found out, to who the actual bad guys were and what they left behind。 This one will have Kate thinking things over again and again and see herself as different times in her own life。 Through it all Tomasetti is there to stand strong at her back and give her support as will the officers she works with。

Kate Burkholder is one of my favorite mystery and suspense books series。 The action starts from the beginning and continues until the end。Kate left the Amish community some time ago but she’d sworn to protect the Painters Mill and its people。Kate, a chief of police, investigates the murder of one of the Amish girls。 Rachael Schwartz was always a troublemaker, broke rules, disobeyed her parents and recently released a book in which she trashed not only the Amish people, but also the Killbuck cla Kate Burkholder is one of my favorite mystery and suspense books series。 The action starts from the beginning and continues until the end。Kate left the Amish community some time ago but she’d sworn to protect the Painters Mill and its people。Kate, a chief of police, investigates the murder of one of the Amish girls。 Rachael Schwartz was always a troublemaker, broke rules, disobeyed her parents and recently released a book in which she trashed not only the Amish people, but also the Killbuck clan。 She was shunned by the Amish and excommunicated。 Her parents never accepted her leaving, they saw her as fallen, same as Kate。 What was she doing in the Painters Mill motel? Who murdered her so brutally and torture her so badly?Definitely very absorbing and captivating thriller。 My guesses as it comes to the murderer were jumping from one person to another。 I like when I am engrossed in the story which confuses me but at the same time engages me in the investigation。 If you like a quick read with a mix of suspense, mystery and drama, then you should try this series。 It doesn't have to be read in chronological order, as each book has its own story。I was so excited when I won this book in the @Goodreads @Giveaway。Thank you @Minotaur_Books for sending me an advanced copy of this book。 。。。more

I used to read a lot of books set in the Amish communities, but they all focused on romance and family。 Don’t get me wrong, this one did too, but it wasn’t the main storyline。This book gets right to the disturbing part-the brutal murder of Rachael。 Just as a warning so you are prepared! I loved how this book focussed on what happens when you have been excommunicated from the Amish Faith, and your family。 Then you want to come back, and it’s really hard。 Some walks of life are just not for everyone, including the Amish。 This book even has some subtle reverse gender norms in it! Normally it is the young men who “stray from the path” and leave the Amish faith/community。 Not women。 This book has TWO women who left the faith because they were too “wild and thrill seeking” and knew they would never be happy if they stayed。 And let’s not forget the police world, as that is the main story- trying to figure out who murdered Rachael。 By the end of the book, we see just how corrupt a police officer can be in the line of duty。 Kate struggles a bit with that knowledge。 There are some surprises near the end that I didn’t see coming, that just added to the overall enjoyment of reading this book for me。 I highly recommend picking this one up! 。。。more

Like all the books in the series, there's a little bit about Kate's personal life, and I loved the tidbits we get about her and the love of her life, Tomasetti, who works for the Ohio Bureau of Investigation and works the case with her as needed。 This is definitely not the focus of the book, but it's such a great touch。The book is told mostly in the few days following the murder, but it also includes flashbacks to 2008/2009 to give context for what had happened then that led to the present。 I really enjoyed the inclusion of both - this is a story that readers will need to keep reading until they figure out。With suspense and a great murder-mystery, FALLEN is another fantastic installment in the Burkholder series。 I cannot wait to read the next! Please note that I received an ARC。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

Fallen is the 13th book of the series featuring Chief Kate Burkholder。 This book is easily a stand alone but after reading it I would like to start at the beginning of the series。 There is discussions about the past but don't appear to be relevant to this particular story。 The story begins with a brutal attack of a woman found in a motel of lower standards。 Chief Burkholder is contacted and arrives only to discover the murder victim is a woman that she used to babysit for when she was younger。 K Fallen is the 13th book of the series featuring Chief Kate Burkholder。 This book is easily a stand alone but after reading it I would like to start at the beginning of the series。 There is discussions about the past but don't appear to be relevant to this particular story。 The story begins with a brutal attack of a woman found in a motel of lower standards。 Chief Burkholder is contacted and arrives only to discover the murder victim is a woman that she used to babysit for when she was younger。 Kate, having been raised Amish but left the community herself, will reach out to the families to notify and quietly investigate what brought Rachael (raised Amish but also left) back to town only to be murdered。 There are many twists and secrets that are revealed that will take you by surprise。 The writing was wonderful and the characters are well developed。 I thoroughly enjoyed this book and highly recommend it。I received an ARC from NetGalley for an unbiased review。 。。。more
