Summary

For readers of VE Schwab and The Witcher, science and magic clash in atmospheric gaslight-era Prague。

In the quiet streets of Prague all manner of otherworldly creatures lurk in the shadows。 Unbeknownst to its citizens, their only hope against the tide of predators are the dauntless lamplighters - a secret elite of monster hunters whose light staves off the darkness each night。 Domek Myska leads a life teeming with fraught encounters with the worst kind of evil: pijavica, bloodthirsty and soulless vampiric creatures。 Despite this, Domek find solace in his moments spent in the company of his friend, the clever and beautiful Lady Ora Fischer - a widow with secrets of her own。

When Domek finds himself stalked by the spirit of the White Lady - a ghost who haunts the baroque halls of Prague castle - he stumbles across the sentient essence of a will-o'-the-wisp, a mischievous spirit known to lead lost travellers to their death, but who, once captured, are bound to serve the desires of their owners。

After discovering a conspiracy amongst the pijavica that could see them unleash terror on the daylight world, Domek finds himself in a race against those who aim to twist alchemical science for their own dangerous gain。

Entertaining read with a refreshingly unique story。 I love Domek and Ora as the leading characters and enjoyed their development。 There were moments where it felt the author was stretching to hit a word count, but aside from those occasional blips the story was fantastic and the setting of Prague was a welcome and fresh aesthetic。

Boring, mostly predictable and the two MCs had zero chemistry between them。

Such a fun read。 Interesting plot and characters。 The dialogue was a bit cheesy at times, but not enough to change my rating。

My underrated favourite of the year so far。At its roots this book is a historical urban fantasy with monsters and monster hunters, but it reads as such a slow, atmospheric book that I don’t think that is the right pitch。We follow 2 protagonists, Domek Myska, a lamplighter whose job is to keep the clueless mortals safe from the monsters who hunt in the dark, and Lady Ora Fischerova, a pijavice (vampire) who has shunned the darker world she came from and lives as an aristocratic (bisexual) widow, My underrated favourite of the year so far。At its roots this book is a historical urban fantasy with monsters and monster hunters, but it reads as such a slow, atmospheric book that I don’t think that is the right pitch。We follow 2 protagonists, Domek Myska, a lamplighter whose job is to keep the clueless mortals safe from the monsters who hunt in the dark, and Lady Ora Fischerova, a pijavice (vampire) who has shunned the darker world she came from and lives as an aristocratic (bisexual) widow, enjoying all Prague had to offer。This book has the two colliding in one world, while not knowing how they also reside in the secret, dark world of Prague。 It is so beautiful and I’ve heard no one talk about it。If you like slow-paced, atmospheric books with lush settings and fascinating characters you really need to give this book a shot, you won’t be disappointed。 。。。more

I really liked this book。 The thing that grabbed me was the beautiful cover on the front。 Then I read the back and I was hooked。 This highlights the beautiful aesthetic of old Prague in the 1800s。 But with a slightly darker twist。 Monsters lurk in the shadows and it's up to the lamplighters to stop them。 Amazing to think that old gas lamps had just arrived there at that time and there were whispers of electrical power。 Which the book mentions briefly。 I think that the historical aspect of this b I really liked this book。 The thing that grabbed me was the beautiful cover on the front。 Then I read the back and I was hooked。 This highlights the beautiful aesthetic of old Prague in the 1800s。 But with a slightly darker twist。 Monsters lurk in the shadows and it's up to the lamplighters to stop them。 Amazing to think that old gas lamps had just arrived there at that time and there were whispers of electrical power。 Which the book mentions briefly。 I think that the historical aspect of this book made me really happy。 I got to visit an old city and enjoy the adventures of it's characters。 Very well written with interesting twists on vampires and others。 I'd have liked to hear more about some of the other monsters too。 The ending was slightly predictable but I feel like lately all books are like that。 Its not like you can leave em on a cliffhanger or something。。。unless you can。。。 *cue evil laugh*。 Anyway。 Excellent book! 。。。more

Plot: An atmospheric historical fantasy about a conspiracy that has implications reaching far and deep into the lives of Prague's citizens。 Pijavice are blood sucking demons (aka vampires) that lurk in the shadows along with a myriad of supernatural beings that go bump in the night。 Domek is part of an organization that hunts these creatures all the while maintaining a chaste but flirtatious relationship with Lady Ora, a mysterious woman who enjoys the finer things in life。 It all begins with Do Plot: An atmospheric historical fantasy about a conspiracy that has implications reaching far and deep into the lives of Prague's citizens。 Pijavice are blood sucking demons (aka vampires) that lurk in the shadows along with a myriad of supernatural beings that go bump in the night。 Domek is part of an organization that hunts these creatures all the while maintaining a chaste but flirtatious relationship with Lady Ora, a mysterious woman who enjoys the finer things in life。 It all begins with Domek's discovery of a will-o'-wisp while all patrol that cascades into a sprawling adventure across a city that never sleeps to stop the forces of evil。 Characters: Domek Myska - One of our protagonists and PoV characters。 Lamplighter who believes in his mission to eliminate supernatural threats from Prague。 Kája - A will-o'-wisp Domek finds on patrol。 Enslaved to his jar。 Anton - Domek's best friend and roommate。 His sister was attacked by a creature and since then has made it his life's mission to hunt down monsters with the lamplighters。 Cord - Domek's aristocratic friend。 Enjoys spending money but can also be more reasonable than most people when it comes to the matters of the heart。 Paluska - The leader of the lamplighters。 Ambitious and unbending in his hatred of pijavice。 Lady Ora Fischerová - Our second protagonist and PoV character。 A pijavica hiding in plain sight as a widowed lady with tons of money。 Enjoys reading, going to the opera, flirting with humans and following her heart。Lina - Ora's attendant。 Inherited the position from her mother and decided to stay when her mother left the estate。 Cares about Ora very much。 Sokol - Lieutenant from the War Office tasked with ridding Prague of its pijavice problem。 Not very effective, but works hard regardless。 Now I know what you're going to say。 Another vampire romance story? Hear me out though because this one is less about the vampires and romance as it is about Domek and Ora。 The story opens in 19th century Prague at the tail end of a war and the beginning of a new age of innovation。 The royal court has moved to Vienna and Prague is on the verge of becoming an irrelevant city to the larger political machinations of the world。 Unbeknownst to many of its citizens, Prague is home to magical beings that still haunt the night, including the pijavice, bloodsucking creatures that were once human。 An organization of lamplighters patrol the night while lighting the gas lamps, killing supernatural threats when necessary。 Domek is one such man。Ora is a pijavica (singular of pijavice) that hides among the people of Prague, only going out at night to enjoy music, books and the finer things in life with her human attendant, Lina。 She has forsaken the ways of the pijavice masses, refusing to drink human blood and treating humans like livestock。 She has a complicated relationship with her immortality, knowing that everything she's ever loved or cared about will one day leave her。 She longs to look at the sunset and experience the world during the day, but knows she will turn into ashes the moment she does。 She has short flings with people everywhere she travels all the while hoping for happiness in the deepest recesses of her heart。 Her current flirtations are with Domek, the surly repairman, not knowing he is a lamplighter, someone who hunts her kind。 This book is exceptionally atmospheric, from the expansive descriptions of the underground tunnels to the corners of the city to which Domek and Ora travel。 The book is pulls you in and traps you into the charm of Prague but also allow you to experience la quotidienne of the city。 There are operas to attend, bookshops to see, gothic architecture for miles and abandoned tunnels to explore。 The world building is subtle but just enough for you to taste Prague so much so that it makes you want to go there and experience it for yourself。 The story is very slow burn and even a bit quiet during and after its climax。 If you're looking for explosions after the slow burn or have problems with slow burn books in the first place, you might want to give this one a skip。 We follow Ora and Domek has they live their lives all the while bumping into each other throughout the story。 They both become involved in investigating a new cure that is rumored to let the pijavice survive sunlight and hawthorn, the two weaknesses lamplighters exploit。 For about 50% of the book, they are completely unaware of each other's true dispositions, but the stakes are raised when the two clash in a moment of clarity。 There were a lot of small threads that were thrown into the story for seemingly no reason, for example, the White Lady。 However, Jarvis crafts each of the characters and mini plots with intention as they all converge by the end of the book。 I was a bit concerned near the end that something would be left unexplained, but Jarvis doesn't miss a beat。 Jarvis' story doesn't add anything interesting to vampire lore, but she rightfully doesn't add anything overdone, like how sexy they are。 They're actually a bit terrifying in her interpretation。 The book does something that I love though, and that is focusing on the characters, Ora and Domek。 Domek is a holier-than-thou type of character who believes a little too hard in his own righteousness while refusing to let go of the small amount power that's been granted to him。 However, the contrast between him (a utilitarian rule follower) and Ora (a free spirited socialite) make for dynamic character interactions and development as they learn more about themselves and each other than they ever wanted to know。 Domek learns about the grey area that permeates everything in our lives and the perils of arrogance, whilst Ora realizes she cannot be apathetic about her kind and her past forever。 The end of the book wasn't a ribbon on top but an ending that denotes the world could or could not have more stories to tell。 Not a new favorite, but worth a read if you're into gothic historical fantasy, but very light on the fantastical elements。 Enjoyed my time with it。 review also up on my blog 。。。more

Thank you firstly to Titan Books for granting me access to an e-arc via NetGalley, I really couldn't resist that cover! This book made me wish I could go back to Prague and walk the streets over Charles Bridge, it's always wonderful to have some kind of connection to a fantastical book because the setting is a real place you can experience and refer to。 We've got some classical paranormal creatures here, just with names I've never seen before。 Pijavice (vampires) are the most common in the book Thank you firstly to Titan Books for granting me access to an e-arc via NetGalley, I really couldn't resist that cover! This book made me wish I could go back to Prague and walk the streets over Charles Bridge, it's always wonderful to have some kind of connection to a fantastical book because the setting is a real place you can experience and refer to。 We've got some classical paranormal creatures here, just with names I've never seen before。 Pijavice (vampires) are the most common in the book and I very much enjoyed the complexity of their underworld。 The last time I read about vampires was the midst of my teens when Twilight was at it's pinnacle。 I've since enjoyed various films but not read too many books with the creatures, it feels like they were given a break after being in the limelight for so long and I am so excited to see them coming back to more popular books! We touch on a few other species and it's kept to few enough types that it's not an overwhelming amount of information like it can be for other fantasy books。 Domek is a really lovely character。 Built like a bear and a softy with the drive to get the work done。 His role as a lamplighter is the perfect base and job for a story like this to get going。 The set up is quite seamless this way, who would even question that those with jobs starting in the dark of the night are actually specially equipped to battle the supernatural? This concept could honestly span a whole series and come out with incredible new content every single time。 I wouldn't be mad if it went that way at all。 Another character we experience the story through is Ora, a lady ahead of her time。 I understood all of her actions, there was no disagreeing with her rash decisions which I often do with female characters but she was logical whilst emotional。 A character I could just really get along with, she's got all the situating she needs to be the kind of woman she is。 Wealth, status, I might even have survived such terrible times for women if I had some of the freedom she did。 Her status is not without it's own tragic backstory but I'll let you traverse that with her。 We have a small but plentiful range of other characters, charming, violent, manipulative。 The whole lot。 Kája and Cord were delectable, I wish we had more of them both。 All I will say is not to become too attached to many of our characters。 There is violence and distraught in this book, not too extreme but enough to keep the plot really moving。 We've got plenty of action in this book but I can't really comment on the pacing。 I admit I was distracted by exams which meant I took a while reading this。 I found it a little too easy to put down and leave so I don't have a clear picture of the pacing if I were to read it normally。 Thinking back on the level of action it was probably fairly well paced with mystery and a little bit of complexity as we move in different circles between our two main characters。 Crossing paths ever so often was very, very fun。 These two have good chemistry throughout。 I also really enjoyed the writing style, if I don't notice the writing it's generally a good thing。 If I notice the writing style it's because it was too simple of overly complex, too much description or something else that's generally irritated me。 When I don't notice anything it's because I'm enjoying it too much to take a minute to stop and really appreciate it。 All in all, I really enjoyed this book and am hoping for more like it! 。。。more

Blah。 For a vampire book this was awfully boring。 Nothing much happened and the things that did weren't really impressive, in my opinion。 The atmosphere, the vibes and Prague setting were really well done, though。 Also, it is a crime that Kaja and the White Lady didn't get more page time。 Their story was fascinating。 Blah。 For a vampire book this was awfully boring。 Nothing much happened and the things that did weren't really impressive, in my opinion。 The atmosphere, the vibes and Prague setting were really well done, though。 Also, it is a crime that Kaja and the White Lady didn't get more page time。 Their story was fascinating。 。。。more

The third star is only for the potential。 This book could have been one of my favourites。 Gothic Prague? Rich scheming vampires? Noble monster hunters? Alas, this is one of those stories that sounds good in theory, and reading it only spoils it。 I should get used to the fact that premises which sound too good to be true usually are。 Oh well, better luck next time。

I picked this book because of the title。 Being born in Czech Republic and knowing old Prague quite well I was able to picture the little side streets lined with cobblestones, the theatres, the castle and churches described in this book。 Great for any fantasy and all things supernatural lovers – it might be slightly more difficult to read for people not familiar with the Czech words – pijavica (vampire), vodnik (under water man) etc。 But I loved it。 It made the book homelier for me。 And of course I picked this book because of the title。 Being born in Czech Republic and knowing old Prague quite well I was able to picture the little side streets lined with cobblestones, the theatres, the castle and churches described in this book。 Great for any fantasy and all things supernatural lovers – it might be slightly more difficult to read for people not familiar with the Czech words – pijavica (vampire), vodnik (under water man) etc。 But I loved it。 It made the book homelier for me。 And of course the good writing and story line really helped。 We are introduced to the world of lamplighters, really they are the monster hunters, hiding behind a simple job。 They keep the streets and humans safe from the monsters lurking in the shadows。 Domek is one of them and thinks he knows his job and friends well until he finds a small jar with a trapped soul in it。Enter Olga Fisherova。 Attractive widow with her eyes on the mysterious Domek。 Slight problems is, she is one the monsters he hunts。 They will have to find a way to settle their differences as they both fight for the good。 Thank you to NetGalley for access to this fab book。 。。。more

This story had a fresh new perspective on vampires and the setting and time period were quite interesting。 The audiobook narration was very good too。Still, the dialogues sounded now and then too long, repetitive and explanatory, and stood in the way of the story development more than necessary。 What also got repetitive were Domek's constant inner thoughts when I had already clearly understood from his actions that he was an honored hero。I felt that if the book would have been two hundred pages s This story had a fresh new perspective on vampires and the setting and time period were quite interesting。 The audiobook narration was very good too。Still, the dialogues sounded now and then too long, repetitive and explanatory, and stood in the way of the story development more than necessary。 What also got repetitive were Domek's constant inner thoughts when I had already clearly understood from his actions that he was an honored hero。I felt that if the book would have been two hundred pages shorter this would have made it more lively and better。 Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for giving me an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

The setting of this novel was superb, and as someone that has visited Prague a couple of times, I feel like the author really captured the feel of the city。 The way that the vampires functioned was also pretty original, and I liked the more cultural take on them - especially with the other supernatural elements that appear, like will-o-the-wisps and the White Lady of Prague。Sadly, there were also alot of things that didn't work for me。 The characters needed more time to develop, and I found it h The setting of this novel was superb, and as someone that has visited Prague a couple of times, I feel like the author really captured the feel of the city。 The way that the vampires functioned was also pretty original, and I liked the more cultural take on them - especially with the other supernatural elements that appear, like will-o-the-wisps and the White Lady of Prague。Sadly, there were also alot of things that didn't work for me。 The characters needed more time to develop, and I found it hard to care about the romance even though I did like both of the characters quite abit - especially the vampiric character。 But I think many readers will love the vampire hunter/vampire romance, as it got that enemies to lovers aspect to it!The plot itself I found kind of meh and predictable, but in the grand scheme of things this is not that bad。 It is formulaic, and often I find that comforting, even if it wasn't to my taste here。 Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the arc!3。5/5 stars。 。。。more

Loved it! Great characters, some LGBTQ+ rep, really evocative setting。 Vampires and hunters in gaslight era Prague, what more do you need

Pretty basic, could have been thought provoking, not really what I was looking for to read right now (kinda my fault)
