Summary

A manual of reflections for an increasingly stressful world

Nothing is stronger than a small hope that doesn’t give up。

A collection of little islands of hope, The Comfort Book gathers consolations and stories that give us new ways of seeing ourselves and the world。

Matt Haig’s mix of philosophy, memoir and self-reflection builds on the wisdom of philosophers and survivors through the ages, from Marcus Aurelius to Nellie Bly, from Emily Dickinson to James Baldwin。

This is the book to pick up when you need the wisdom of a friend or the comfort of a hug, or just want to celebrate the messy miracle of being alive。

As usual, Matt Haig's nonfiction is great。 Thought provoking and hopeful。 I bookmarked so many pages to revisit! Recommend for anyone needing a daily pick-me-up or for a sleepless night。 His thoughts and writings take you beyond yourself and to view the world in a different, gentle, but uplifting way。 All the stars。 As usual, Matt Haig's nonfiction is great。 Thought provoking and hopeful。 I bookmarked so many pages to revisit! Full disclosure。 I love Matt Haig。 I think he’s an awesome human。 I love how open and honest he is about his mental health。 How he inspires others to do the same。 I love his simple outlook on life。 So yes, I loved this book of quotes, essays, the odd recipe, playlists etc。 It’s a book to dip in and out of, to gift a friend having a bad day, week, yearly simply just because you love them deeply。 As someone who has suffered panic attacks since my teens, I found this helpful & quite lovely。 One for Full disclosure。 I love Matt Haig。 I think he’s an awesome human。 I love how open and honest he is about his mental health。 How he inspires others to do the same。 I love his simple outlook on life。 So yes, I loved this book of quotes, essays, the odd recipe, playlists etc。 It’s a book to dip in and out of, to gift a friend having a bad day, week, yearly simply just because you love them deeply。 As someone who has suffered panic attacks since my teens, I found this helpful & quite lovely。 One for my nightstand permanently…。 💕 。。。more

This is a short, but profound and powerful book to help anyone struggling with mental health, particularly during this challenging pandemic period! When I found out that Matt Haig was bringing out another non-fiction novel, I was beyond excited to get my hands on it。 As much as I adore his fiction novels (and I really do), his non-fiction books just fill me with so much joy and love。 They are honest and raw and vulnerable and full of emotion。The Comfort Book was no different in that respect。 It was beautifully honest, not shying away from the hard stuff, but facing it head on。 It was full of quotes and poetry and other people's stories and When I found out that Matt Haig was bringing out another non-fiction novel, I was beyond excited to get my hands on it。 As much as I adore his fiction novels (and I really do), his non-fiction books just fill me with so much joy and love。 They are honest and raw and vulnerable and full of emotion。The Comfort Book was no different in that respect。 It was beautifully honest, not shying away from the hard stuff, but facing it head on。 It was full of quotes and poetry and other people's stories and I just loved it。 There are so many pages and quotes that I underlined and highlighted and I could write all of my favourite quotes down but then you wouldn't even have to read the book! So I will just write down this one, my favourite:"ChapterThere is no point spending an entire life trying to win the love you didn't feel when you needed it。 You sometimes just have to let go of an old story and start your own。 Give yourself some love。 You can't change the past。 You can't change other people。 You can change you though。 You narrate this story。 So start to write a new chapter。" 。。。more

I am in love with this book! The thoughts and quotes and lists and everything made me feel Heard- and seen and I felt understood。 Also I am trying to integrate some of the thoughts Matt Haig pointed out into my daily life as well。

。。。more

ARC provided by the publisher in exchange for an honest review。 This book is going to be one I refer to frequently as there are so many comforting nuggets of wisdom throughout。 Poems, lists of movies and songs, and reminders and affirmations all woven together to provide encouragement and make the reader feel a little less alone。 Truly does feel like a hug from a friend。

I definitely connected to The Comfort Book more than Haig's Notes on a Nervous Planet which makes me glad because Reasons to Stay Alive means so much to me。 In general, I liked it but I also think it wasn't the right time for me to read this。 I'm in the middle of a (mental) health crisis and the novel is very much written from a in-hindsight-kind-of-perspective which is not (yet) tangible to me so it felt a little out of touch for me personally。 In addition to that, it felt a little weird to hav I definitely connected to The Comfort Book more than Haig's Notes on a Nervous Planet which makes me glad because Reasons to Stay Alive means so much to me。 In general, I liked it but I also think it wasn't the right time for me to read this。 I'm in the middle of a (mental) health crisis and the novel is very much written from a in-hindsight-kind-of-perspective which is not (yet) tangible to me so it felt a little out of touch for me personally。 In addition to that, it felt a little weird to have a few pages with just lists of music or movies that Haig found comfort in because that seems more like something you would post on a blog, Twitter, Instagram, Facebook or something to me and it seemed a little out of place for me。TW/CW: mentions of depression, suicidal thoughts, panic disorder 。。。more

Review of digital ARC。 Although I am sure that Matt Haig writes great fiction, this book is very dull and uncomforting。 There are some useful thoughts and nice poetic lists but unfortunately much of the advice seems trite, repetitive, or unoriginal。 Some of the advice seems like the type of thing you'd find in a quaint but cheesy gift shop selling soaps and candles。 Sorry for the harsh review but there are other books, like Ross Gay's "Book of Delights," that are much better in this genre。 Review of digital ARC。 Although I am sure that Matt Haig writes great fiction, this book is very dull and uncomforting。 There are some useful thoughts and nice poetic lists but unfortunately much of the advice seems trite, repetitive, or unoriginal。 Some of the advice seems like the type of thing you'd find in a quaint but cheesy gift shop selling soaps and candles。 Sorry for the harsh review but there are other books, like Ross Gay's "Book of Delights," that are much better in this genre。 。。。more
