Summary

In a modern and twisty retelling of Jane Eyre, a young woman must question everything she thinks she knows about love, loyalty, and murder。

Jane has lost everything: job, mother, relationship, even her home。 A friend calls to offer an unusual deal—a cottage above the crashing surf of Big Sur on the estate of his employer, Evan Rochester。 In return, Jane will tutor his teenage daughter。 She accepts。

But nothing is quite as it seems at the Rochester estate。 Though he’s been accused of murdering his glamorous and troubled wife, Evan Rochester insists she drowned herself。 Jane is skeptical, but she still finds herself falling for the brilliant and secretive entrepreneur and growing close to his daughter。

And yet her deepening feelings for Evan can’t disguise dark suspicions aroused when a ghostly presence repeatedly appears in the night’s mist and fog。 Jane embarks on an intense search for answers and uncovers evidence that soon puts Evan’s innocence into question。 She’s determined to discover what really happened that fateful night, but what will the truth cost her?

Modern Jane Eyre FanfictionI didn't enjoy this modern fanfiction spin on *Jane Eyre* as much as I hoped I would。 I did like the mid-California coast location, having been through Big Sur many times。 Truly, though, I never saw it as a Gothic setting, but the author did a decent job making Mr。 Rochester’s place on that coast feel appropriately creepy and Gothic, often echoing the moody murkiness of the English original。 The book goes back and forth between the perspectives of Jane and the first Mr Modern Jane Eyre FanfictionI didn't enjoy this modern fanfiction spin on *Jane Eyre* as much as I hoped I would。 I did like the mid-California coast location, having been through Big Sur many times。 Truly, though, I never saw it as a Gothic setting, but the author did a decent job making Mr。 Rochester’s place on that coast feel appropriately creepy and Gothic, often echoing the moody murkiness of the English original。 The book goes back and forth between the perspectives of Jane and the first Mrs。 Rochester。 This use of alternating viewpoints is certainly a twist on the original。。。 but not a good one。 Reading the first Mrs。 Rochester's ramblings added little to the story。 In fact, I think it detracted from it。 Even though her chapters take a fair amount of the book, she feels two-dimensional at best。 As a nurse who has dealt with people with mental health disorders, people with such afflictions rarely vacillate between the two poles depicted in the book: perfect while on meds or “crazy” when not。 We have a far better understanding of mental health and illness today than they had in Victorian times; it would have been nice to see that reflected in modern-day Jane Eyre fanfiction。 Honestly, too, I thought the chapters from the former Mrs。 Rochester's perspective took away from the book’s mystery and romance。 I wasn't wild about this version of Mr。 Rochester, either。 Frankly, I couldn't quite believe that our modern-day Jane would choose him when he had been unfaithful to her。 That had been a problem in a previous relationship of hers。The author was generally faithful to the original characters and the plot points (major and minor), perhaps too much so。 I would have loved to have seen the author take a few more bold steps beyond the alternating viewpoints, creating unique moments (but ones still in line with the original) to make it her own and more modern。Don’t get me wrong; I usually enjoy fanfiction based on Regency and Victorian novels。 I know some more erudite readers believe any fanfiction is necessarily less, but I love to see favorite characters and plots reworked by talented authors。 Personally, I can't get enough of great characters like Elizabeth Bennet, Fitzwilliam Darcy, Jane Eyre, and Mr。 Rochester。。。 so much so that I regularly seek out and enjoy fanfiction that plays with the familiar, well-loved characters and plot points。 Unfortunately, all in all, I found myself disappointed in this reworking of a beloved classic。 I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review。 。。。more

Modern, gothic retelling of Jane Eyre。Not a fan of the romance。 Rochester creeped me out, and even when he explains things, I never quite warmed to him。 Unsure if that's deliberate on the author's part - I haven't read Jane Eyre in years, but I don't think I ever saw Rochester as particularly attractive。 Problem is, while the OG romance could be explained away by limited options for women in the Victorian era, modern-day Jane has plenty of options beyond Rochester。Also not a big fan of how the n Modern, gothic retelling of Jane Eyre。Not a fan of the romance。 Rochester creeped me out, and even when he explains things, I never quite warmed to him。 Unsure if that's deliberate on the author's part - I haven't read Jane Eyre in years, but I don't think I ever saw Rochester as particularly attractive。 Problem is, while the OG romance could be explained away by limited options for women in the Victorian era, modern-day Jane has plenty of options beyond Rochester。Also not a big fan of how the novel handled Rochester's wife, Beatrice。 Many modern retellings focus on giving Bertha a voice, and making commentary on how the charge of insanity is often weaponized against women who don't quite fit the norm。 In this novel, Beatrice is outright diagnosed with mental illness - the novel names bipolar disorder, but she also hears voices and has hallucinations, which as far as I know isn't a symptom of bipolar。 I'm not sure if these are caused by a different condition, or by her medicines, and the latter possibility is, to me, a rich and chilling potential indictment of Rochester's attempts to control his wife。Thing is, the novel holds back from delving too deep into that。 Rochester's wife has a voice - she narrates some of the chapters - but in many ways, she's still treated like the wild, mad Other。 I almost wish that we got a glimpse into her mindset when she was managing her condition, or even early in her relationship to Evan, before things fell apart for her。There are hints of culpability from the men in her life - her brother's manipulation when they were children, Evan's gaslighting about Lilies - but then her story follows the tragic arc of Bronte's original, which in 2021, feels lacking in necessary nuance。 Even Evan's gaslighting is brushed off as being "unkind", and quickly forgiven, which just feels wrong。I don't feel qualified to speak on the mental health representation in this novel, but I do feel Beatrice deserves better, and I wish Jane had made different choices。As a retelling of Jane Eyre, it's very faithful to the original, and may satisfy fans looking for that。 Personally, I preferred the more contemporary liberties taken by another Jane Eyre retelling, The Wife Upstairs by Rachel Hawkins。 。。。more

This is a contemporary gothic retelling of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre。 It’s modern, full of twists, and unreliable characters。 You won’t know who’s telling the truth until the end。 Jane gets the short end of the stick; her mom loses her battle with cancer, her boyfriend takes up with another woman, and now the TV network show she writes has been cancelled。 How is she going to pay the rent on her New York apartment? When she’s offered the chance to move to a little waterfront bungalow in exchange for tutoring Evan Rochester’s daughter, Sophia, in Big Sur, California, she jumps at the chance。 Studly Evan is a widowed tech entrepreneur whose gorgeous wife, Beatrice, drowned suddenly。 Jane is suspicious and starts investigating, hoping to find the truth behind the supermodel’s death。You’ll see lots of the same plot points as the classic。 Parallel to the original is (1) a poor naïve orphan who travels to teach a young girl, (2) a man who falls off his ride, (3) lots of foggy weather, ghosts, and a great gothic setting and (4) numerous people who attempt to convince Jane that Rochester is not the kind of person she should be spending time with。 This retelling is done in alternating chapters from Jane and Beatrice’s points of view。 I felt frustrated because each, on its own, would have made for a great story。 However, putting them together didn’t work for me。 I felt it watered down the mystery and the romance。 The added chapters from Beatrice’s point of view, I thought, took away from the mystery。 Despite Modern Jane being more assertive, I wondered at her allowing a ‘player’ into her life。 The re-located setting worked for me as did the atmospheric tension。 It’s always risky modernizing a classic and, unfortunately, this one didn’t work for me。 I wonder if I’d have liked it if I hadn’t known it was a retelling? Was I comparing the whole time I was reading? Maybe。 Read it yourself。 Let me know。 I was gifted this advance copy by Lindsay Marcotte, Thomas & Mercer, and NetGalley and was under no obligation to provide a review。 。。。more

Yes, but not as it is presented。 Again, that’s just this one reader’s opinion。**I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received via NetGalley。 All thoughts and opinions are my own。 ** 。。。more

Overall I thought this take on Jane Eyre (and her relationship to a somewhat gothic place steeped in history with its own Mr。 Rochester) was a good reimagining and modernization of a favorite classic tale。 I wish the story had gone a bit further in some aspects to add originality, but it was creepy and immersed you in the scenes well。

I'll do my best to share my thoughts。Is it successful as a mystery? Maybe。 Mostly。 Though I can't help but think that if it was told solely from Jane's point of view it would have been a better mystery/thriller。 I think by having dual narration, readers learn a bit too much before the other characters become aware。。。thus losing some suspense。 Even so, there's plenty of elements that make this one a decent mystery with a few gothic elements thrown in。Is it successful as a romance? NO。 Not really。 Here's the problem, readers probably won't like to see the main character, Jane, get gaslighted by Evan Rochester for hundreds of pages。 It's hard to believe that readers will cheer on this coupling when Mr。 Rochester is clearly all about gaslighting the women in his life! Seriously。 I don't have a problem with Jane choosing to have a fling with him--against her better judgment and ours--I can't really say I want this relationship to last long term。Are the relationships well developed? I will say the relationship between Jane and Evan was more lusty-lust than true love。 HOWEVER。 I will say this, I really did enjoy the developing relationship between Sophia and Jane。 It was a gradual building up of trust。 It may appear a bit rushed towards the end of the novel。 But I will forgive the novel that because this relationship is really the novel's greatest strength。 I wouldn't say the novel was character-driven, far from it, but it has at least a little bit of development。Is it successful as a retelling? In places I feel it does capture the essence of the original。 Not in the romance between Jane and Rochester。 There are scenes that I felt were inspired directly by the original that come off decently。 (For example, Jane being haunted--feeling haunted--and the strange things she almost sees and definitely hears as she stays on the estate。)I didn't find Mrs。 Rochester's Ghost as compelling and engaging as The Wife Upstairs。 However, Mrs。 Rochester's Ghost definitely has more likeable characters。 。。。more

Unique to this retelling are chapters from Beatrice from December 17, the day of her drowning。 Are these the delusional ramblings of a troubled woman who has stopped taking her medication? Or is this the truth of what really happened before she disappeared into the crashing waves? I found these chapters actually detracted from rather than enhanced the story。 After everything that our modern day Jane learned to be true, when all was said and done, I think she would have been better served by a modern day ending。 I didn’t feel like the love of this Jane and this Mr。 Rochester felt strong enough to withstand the test of time。This title will be available on August 1, 2021。Thank You to Thomas and Mercer for providing a gifted copy。 It was my pleasure to provide a candid review! 。。。more

I have never read Jane Eyre before, I'm not big on classical books。 But I am all for retellings! Jane has just lost her mom, her job, and her boyfriend。 She gets invited to Big Sur by an old friend to tutor his bosses daughter。 Jane starts to love her life at Big Sur but the man that owns the home, Evan Rochester has been accused of murdering his wife。 While she is getting close to him and his daughter, she is also trying to find out what actually happened to his wife。 This book was a slow burn I have never read Jane Eyre before, I'm not big on classical books。 But I am all for retellings! I kind of saw all the twists coming ahead of time, but I was still happy with the ending。 Thank you NetGalley and Thomas&Mercer publishing for allowing me to read this ARC。 。。。more

Jane Eyre is a literary masterpiece and any deviation or retelling is hard to be taken too seriously。 With that being said, this was an enjoyable read。 The storyline is already one of the greatest, so it was fun imagining present day characters in a completely different landscape。 Would recommend for a fun beach read。 #mrsrochestersghost #netgalley

This is a smart and well-crafted retelling of Jane Eyre in the period immediately before Covid-19。 Jane, a writer needing work, takes on a job tutoring Sophia, daughter of the wealthy Evan Rochester。 This Jane is a bit tougher and smarter than the original, maybe because she can use the internet to look things up, and she's also got more personality and agency。 Rochester's accused of murdering his wife, former supermodel Beatrice, whose brother prowls around Jane and Evan trying to get evidence。 This is a smart and well-crafted retelling of Jane Eyre in the period immediately before Covid-19。 Jane, a writer needing work, takes on a job tutoring Sophia, daughter of the wealthy Evan Rochester。 This Jane is a bit tougher and smarter than the original, maybe because she can use the internet to look things up, and she's also got more personality and agency。 Rochester's accused of murdering his wife, former supermodel Beatrice, whose brother prowls around Jane and Evan trying to get evidence。 I liked the interactions between Jane and Sophie and Jane and her friends, even though they're all lightly sketched and not terribly diverse。 I'm not entirely convinced that the ending is what it seems to be--I'd love to know what other readers think。 Alternating chapters between Jane's and Beatrice's POVs make things more interesting from the mystery side of things, and the setting is appropriately Gothic。 A fun beach read, if you can stay away from riptides。 。。。more

Romance。 Danger。 Mystery。 Suspense。 A handsome, WEALTHY, brooding gentleman haunted by the ghosts of his past。 A young, naive, woman with no job, no family, and no prospects。 It’s literally the definition of a gothic romance novel (also, let’s be honest, the definition of a modern romance novel too)。Mrs。 Rochester’s Ghost is a modern spin on Jane Eyre, and while it wasn’t groundbreaking, I’d say it’s a pretty successful adaptation。 I confess that it’s been so long since I read Jane Eyre that I h Romance。 Danger。 Mystery。 Suspense。 A handsome, WEALTHY, brooding gentleman haunted by the ghosts of his past。 A young, naive, woman with no job, no family, and no prospects。 It’s literally the definition of a gothic romance novel (also, let’s be honest, the definition of a modern romance novel too)。Mrs。 Rochester’s Ghost is a modern spin on Jane Eyre, and while it wasn’t groundbreaking, I’d say it’s a pretty successful adaptation。 I confess that it’s been so long since I read Jane Eyre that I had to Google the plot to remind myself of some of the more detailed specifics。 It’s also a pretty faithful adaptation of the original novel, and that’s where it falls a little short for me。 I’m conscious of not spoiling the novel, but if you’ve read Jane Eyre you know what to expect。 I think I went into this novel expecting, or maybe just hoping for, some sort of twist or turn that would take a bit off course from it’s inspiration and make it feel new。 It’s difficult to effectively create tension when the reader (assuming they’ve read Jane Eyre) knows what’s ultimately coming their way。Also, I’m a self-professed lover of the thriller / mystery genre but continue to be SO annoyed by protagonists in these books。 WHY must they be so paranoid and suspicious ALL。 THE。 TIME。 I imagine the Unsolved Mysteries theme song in my head while reading because it feels like every tiny little event or interaction is some great mystery to be solved。All that said, I did enjoy it – it’s an easy read, and I liked it。Thank you to NetGalley and Thomas & Mercer for providing me with an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review。Check out more of my reviews on my blog: www。mymomsbookshelf。com。 。。。more

I have always wanted to read Jane Eyre, but I struggle with Classic books so when I saw a modern retelling I promptly requested it。 If you can, I would advise trying to read this in one sitting as its such a great atmospheric novel, to put it down would distract from the build up。 It definitely was a quick easy read and would recommend!3。5 StarsThank you to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for my advanced copy

I'm one of those people who really doesn't like Jane Eyre。 To clarify: The book is fine, but I find the character kind of awful。 So, I'm not sure how it is that I've found myself in dark corners with so many retellings of her story over the years, but this one is top notch - if you can stand it。 I'm one of those people who really doesn't like Jane Eyre。 To clarify: The book is fine, but I find the character kind of awful。 So, I'm not sure how it is that I've found myself in dark corners with so many retellings of her story over the years, but this one is top notch - if you can stand it。 。。。more

Jane has lost her mother, her job and her home and takes a friend up on his offer to come to California。 She arrives at the estate of Evander Rochester and learns he has been suspected of killing his model wife。 He insists she drowned herself, but nothing is as it seems at the estate。 When a ghostly presences appears at night outside Jane’ s cottage, she begins to search for clues。 What really happened to the troubled Beatrice? An excellent retelling of the classic Jane Eyre。
