Narrated by Jennifer Jason Leigh

Quentin Tarantino’s long-awaited first work of literature – at once hilarious, delicious, and brutal – is the always surprising, sometimes shocking new novel based on his Academy Award-winning film。

In 'ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD', Quentin Tarantino re-creates the glamorous and gritty heyday of late 60s Hollywood in the weeks leading up to one of the most shocking crimes in modern American history。 Revisiting and expanding the story told on film, Tarantino's novel is full of the unusual twists and turns that are a hallmark of his acclaimed storytelling。

The story tracks four principal characters both before and after the events of the film:

•1•
Rick Dalton:
Once he had his own TV series, but now Rick’s a washed-up villain-of-the week drowning his sorrows in whiskey sours。 Will a phone call from Rome save his fate or seal it?

•2•
Cliff Booth:
Rick’s stunt double, and the most infamous man on any movie set because he’s the only one there who might have gotten away with murder。。。。

•3•
Sharon Tate:
She left Texas to chase a movie-star dream, and found it。 Sharon’s salad days are now spent on Cielo Drive, high in the Hollywood Hills。

•4•
Charles Manson:
The ex-con’s got a bunch of zonked-out hippies thinking he’s their spiritual leader, but he’d trade it all to be a rock ‘n’ roll star。

Hollywood 1969 - You shoulda been there。。。。

Vivid, funny, unforgettable, 'ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD' teases listeners with the imaginative narrative force that makes Tarantino one of a kind。

Absolutely fucking loved this but I’m curious how someone who hasn’t seen the movie multiple times would feel about the plot。 The movie, while not as plotless as its critics want you to believe, does move at a leisurely pace and the novel elaborates even further on some of those meandering set pieces which is catnip to me but might read as overindulgent to others。 That being said, years of toiling under the sparse prose requirements of screenwriting have honed Tarantino’s writing style down to a Absolutely fucking loved this but I’m curious how someone who hasn’t seen the movie multiple times would feel about the plot。 The movie, while not as plotless as its critics want you to believe, does move at a leisurely pace and the novel elaborates even further on some of those meandering set pieces which is catnip to me but might read as overindulgent to others。 That being said, years of toiling under the sparse prose requirements of screenwriting have honed Tarantino’s writing style down to a very readable, fast pace cadence without trying to show off his vocab skills via purple prose。 I’m ready for the next one, here’s hoping his talk of adapting Reservoir Dogs is more than just podcast press junket patter。 。。。more

I started reading this book late afternoon yesterday as soon as it arrived through my door and I’ve just finished it while compiling a list of every movie that was mentioned in the book at the same time (144 films, if you’re interested in the number)。It’s hard to compare the book to the film, they exist in almost two separate tales while still retaining an air of familiarity as we know scenes, characters and even some portions of dialogue from the film。 The book still uses Tarantino’s brilliant I started reading this book late afternoon yesterday as soon as it arrived through my door and I’ve just finished it while compiling a list of every movie that was mentioned in the book at the same time (144 films, if you’re interested in the number)。It’s hard to compare the book to the film, they exist in almost two separate tales while still retaining an air of familiarity as we know scenes, characters and even some portions of dialogue from the film。 The book still uses Tarantino’s brilliant non-linear story telling but gives insight into those smaller stories from the film like what happened to Cliff’s wife? how did he get Brandy? and lots more。 A movie nerds dream, this book describes in situations vivid detail with some very niche references to other films。 It’s clear that the research Tarantino did for Once from an historical perspective comes to good use here, with old Hollywood tales and detailed knowledge of shops, roads and bars from the era。An absolutely enjoyable companion to the film, that digs deeper into the characters of Rick and Cliff helping to flesh out their throughly engaging back stories with tons of detail。 I only hope that if Tarantino does stop directing after his 10th movie that we still get books like this, maybe we’ll even get a novel of that long awaited Vega Brothers story? now wouldn’t that be cool。 。。。more

Less of a novelization, more of a collection of deleted scenes and movie nerd asides that are tangentially linked to the finished version of ONCE。 While the novel touches most of the big scenes from the final cut, they are often slightly different or mightily expanded。 Other times, it's Tarantino indulging in writing a chapter about soused up actor Aldo Ray - which leads to a mention of Fred Olen Ray (No relation), in a disparaging tone。 Come on, Quentin! Fred lent you his camera to shoot MY BEST FRIEND'S BIRTHDAY! Tarantino clearly has no interest in writing out the big crowd-pleasing moments from the film, so he often sidesteps them, has them happen in the background or ignores them completely。 The novel never reaches the story's bloody climax either (except in passing)。 If you haven't seen the ONCE, this will be a baffling read, but if you wish you could dig deeper into the film's world and get chapters from a gaggle of different perspectives and long stretches that are essentially niche cinephile blog posts, there is much to enjoy。 Also, a cameo from Quentin's step-dad!? I was surprised to find that the novel features an emotional climax for Rick Dalton (Leo) in terms of being an actor that isn't in the film, but in the photos on the back of the book and the "Trailer For The Novel" it's clear those scenes were shot。 It makes sense they were cut because it's a repetition of an earlier moment (but in more detail), but it works like gangbusters in novel form。 Shame there couldn't be any wrap-ups to Cliff Booth or Charles Manson, who are both left hanging in the wind by the time the last page hits。 Cliff Booth's backstory is especially fascinating because Tarantino does everything in his power to make him a full-on anti-hero sonofabitch - so it would have been interesting to see where he ended up。 。。。more

Found this to be absolutely delightful。 The Aldo Ray chapter! The Cliff Booth back story! The alternate versions of and perspectives on events from the film! The deep dive into the careers of journeyman filmmakers and '70s television! I probably won't revisit this as much as I have the film itself, but I will revisit this for sure。 God, what a fucking gift。 Found this to be absolutely delightful。 The Aldo Ray chapter! I cannot wait to read this。 The movie was one of my favorites of 2019。 I love and appreciate that Tarantino insisted on issuing this as a paperback - it totally looks like a dime store novel, which is awesome。 Already put my order in!

I prefer the movie。 3,5/5

I'm looking forward to eventually reading this myself, but I'm also impressed that a few people here have managed to get an early copy of the book。 I'm looking forward to eventually reading this myself, but I'm also impressed that a few people here have managed to get an early copy of the book。 。。。more
