Summary

A gentle and philosophical look at the events of 2020, and how we can deal with the challenges that life throws us in general。 A book to share with the friends and family that we have been missing

THE SUNDAY TIMES BESTSELLER

A beautiful book to connect us after such a challenging time。

'Dark clouds were looming in the distance。 We watched them gather, and we wondered。。。 When will it come? How long will it last?'

A monumental storm brings huge and sudden change。 We follow a man and his dog through the uncertainty that it brings to their lives。 Through their eyes, we see the difficulties of being apart, the rollercoaster of emotions that we can all relate to, and the realisation that by pulling together we can move through difficult times with new perspective, hope and an appreciation of what matters most in life。

It is one of the best books on the pandemic period。 Giving hope and joy of life。

This book contains beautiful, well crafted imagery, and it is probably worth buying just to view that, but as for the written content, I feel something was lacking slightly。 This book is based on the pandemic, and the social distancing that has been put in place with that。 I feel Hawker was trying to tell us within this that the pandemic has changed people, some for worse, some for the better。 I know personally, I have found more comfort in nature and the outdoors than ever before。This book does This book contains beautiful, well crafted imagery, and it is probably worth buying just to view that, but as for the written content, I feel something was lacking slightly。 This book is based on the pandemic, and the social distancing that has been put in place with that。 I feel Hawker was trying to tell us within this that the pandemic has changed people, some for worse, some for the better。 I know personally, I have found more comfort in nature and the outdoors than ever before。This book doesn't contain many words, but with the lovely drawings, I'm not sure there needs to be。 This is a beautiful hardback book, that definitely looks grand in one's bookcase, that's for sure。 。。。more

I don't know how to feel about this one。 It's too short, it took me five minutes to read I felt like I wanted more depth。The artwork is incredible, absolutely loved it。I think the issue I have is that I went into it thinking it was going to be like The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse (which is so incredibly special and meaningful to me) and this just didn't live up to that so I'm going to blame Charlie Mackesy for making other things pale in comparison to his work。 I don't know how to feel about this one。 It's too short, it took me five minutes to read I felt like I wanted more depth。The artwork is incredible, absolutely loved it。I think the issue I have is that I went into it thinking it was going to be like The Boy, The Mole, The Fox and The Horse (which is so incredibly special and meaningful to me) and this just didn't live up to that so I'm going to blame Charlie Mackesy for making other things pale in comparison to his work。 。。。more

。。。more

Such events require a remarkable book to act as a testimony to the storm that is the Covid pandemic, for those that are living through it and I hope for those for whom it will be but a distant memory。Together by Luke Adam Hawker is for me that book!It is a work of beauty, the illustrations managing to voice that sense of gathering doom, clouds on the horizon, that left us separated and detached from the lives we have lived previously。 Yet this is not a work without hope, quite the contrary, it is in fact full joy and the faith that by all pulling together, the world we emerge into will be a better legacy to leave to the next generation。 The art work is breath-taking and matched up with the words provided by Marianne Laidlaw, they create the perfect combination, an ode to the things in life that really matter and a testimony to all be have been through together。 Luke Hawker is an artist of immense talent and the ink and pen drawings feel crisp and intimate, portraying the busyness of our lives before the pandemic hit and yet also our individual isolation from our family and friends as the gathering storm engulfed all of us。 It really is quite extraordinary how he manages to express so much emotion, the power of his drawings to illustrate the experiences of so many。 It felt such an emotional read, one I connected to on a personal level, that voiced how adrift I and so many others felt and continue to do so。。 The drawings managing to convey a myriad of confused and fraught feelings that have occupied my mind for the last year。This this is a book I will keep and turn many times over the next few months, as we face the future Together。 。。。more

A gentle, melancholy meditation with an ultimately uplifting message - a look at the effect of an event like a global pandemic。 The excellent line drawings provide the framework for the brief text。Probably best viewed as a hard copy, rather than an ebook。

A beautiful book that tells the story of the last year or so。。。the drawings are fantastic- some of them so intricate, & I love the main character & his dog!

Sometimes a book comes along that is strikingly beautiful – well produced, with lovely illustrations and a text that is worth reading。 This is such a book。 It is beautifully illustrated, with drawings that at first glance all feature an older man and a dog, but looked at more deeply contain a multitude of small depictions of people doing many different things。 It speaks of a storm coming, that will change our lives, but this is really the first Lockdown of 2020, the arrival of a virus that cause Sometimes a book comes along that is strikingly beautiful – well produced, with lovely illustrations and a text that is worth reading。 This is such a book。 It is beautifully illustrated, with drawings that at first glance all feature an older man and a dog, but looked at more deeply contain a multitude of small depictions of people doing many different things。 It speaks of a storm coming, that will change our lives, but this is really the first Lockdown of 2020, the arrival of a virus that caused fear and more。 Witty, reassuring and generally lovely, this is a book to treasure as a witness to some of the things that we all felt and continue to experience。 I could quote from so many pages of things that struck me, or made me feel emotional。 Its message is in the title, that we have been physically apart, but together in important ways。 I was so pleased to have the opportunity to read and review this book。 The book begins with the acknowledgement that were busy, with places to be at certain times。 An uneasy feeling of a coming storm, of crowds diminishing, of oncoming darkness is conveyed, with deft drawings and so many questions “It’s hard not having all the answers”。 The new normal is strange – and fear can make people forget others are feeling scared。 The way that such emotions as loneliness is conveyed is so clever, with individuals gazing from their houses and flats。 I have two favourite images, of “Heroes amongst us stepped forward” for its subtlety, and the dolls’ house like page “Our homes became dance halls, classrooms, bakeries…” which features dozens of tiny images。 People are dancing, playing games, toddlers learning to walk, and a cheeky memory of Freddie Mercury in the video where he is doing the housework。 For anyone who has passed houses and flats and wondered what story is behind each door, this page is a joy。 I also enjoyed the reminders that nature, the seasons, were and are especially memorable, with the rootedness and predictability being so visible。 With plants as hope and trees as the steadfast prop with so many roots, these are wonderful pictures。 I have rarely found a book which sums up a whole range of stories and the sense of togetherness though apart as well as this book, with line drawings rather than words。 The brief text is almost a prose poem, pointing out the pictures and summing so much up in so few words。 This is a book that at first seems brief, but actually invites careful appreciation and admiration for the little things going on in the pictures, the tiny details that make up a lovely whole。 The progress of the novel is very moving。 Its message, that there may be storms, but we are stronger together, is an intensely beautiful one as expressed here。 This book would make a memorable and thoughtful gift, for yourself or any book lover。 。。。more

an illustrative book about life during the pandemic。 very quick to read— maybe 15 minutes? beautiful, touching artwork, but the text was lacking quite a bit。 i feel like maybe poetry or some form of essay would have fit better?

This is a short tale, looking back at how the Covid pandemic affected all of our lives。 It features an old man and his dog。 The prose is very sparse, with the beautiful illustrations taking centre stage to convey the message。 A short, sweet tale。 I enjoyed it more for the illustrations than anything else。

This is gorgeous。 I love the pencil drawings & sparse prose combo。 Love the way he depicts the dog & the man’s face- mainly by the outline of his specs。 I received it as a gift & I’ll likely give it as a gift to someone else in turn…。 although it’s kinda lockdown vogue so less of-the-moment now perhaps。 Thank you Niki for this wonderful book。
