This was such a cool idea to have these six interconnected stories, that all lead up to a block party during an NYC blackout! I had my doubts at first, but only because the first stories have all of this potential to be full-length novels (thus, weren’t fully fleshed out) that I would definitely pick up and devour。 But alas, we only get a small piece of them。 Overall though, I enjoyed! My favorites were from Tiffany D。 Jackson, Angie Thomas, and Nicola Yoon! I enjoyed this collection of short stories。 I LOVE when I read a book of short stories and the stories are connected in some way。 That’s one of the greatest strengths of the book。 One of the challenges was sometimes it was difficult to discern the authors voices from one another, which can sometimes happen on anthologies, but was a shame because I do think Thomas, Yoon, and Jackson all have distinct voices that I rather enjoy that weren’t as strong or maybe as clear as they are in their own work I enjoyed this collection of short stories。 I LOVE when I read a book of short stories and the stories are connected in some way。 That’s one of the greatest strengths of the book。 One of the challenges was sometimes it was difficult to discern the authors voices from one another, which can sometimes happen on anthologies, but was a shame because I do think Thomas, Yoon, and Jackson all have distinct voices that I rather enjoy that weren’t as strong or maybe as clear as they are in their own works。 I’m not sure if that was a challenge of writing a short story or the effort to make it a cohesive piece。 Anyways I think each short story was interesting, well written, and felt complete/satisfactory in the end。 It’s more of a 3。5 only because I’m not sure how memorable it will be for me by the end of the year as I wasn’t really changed or impacted by any of the stories, they were all just nice to read。 A nice collection and recommendation in the young adult romance/short story realm。 。。。more

Perfect! This book gave me everything that I needed。 I’m such a fan of the YA genre。 Getting one book with several of my favorite YA authors was such a gift。 The stories made me feel youthful and optimistic。 I was rooting so hard for each couple。 I loved getting a mix of friends to lovers, second chance love, and even a super sweet meet-cute。 This book left me feeling so good。

A great collection of stories by some INCREDIBLY talented Black writers told over the course of one Blackout event in summer heatwave in New York City。 Excellent on audio, with a full cast narration - standout stories included the ones by Tiffany D。 Jackson, Angie Thomas and Nic Stone。 Many of the characters are queer, coming to terms with their sexuality and struggling with being out and open。 One young man is having difficulty coming to terms with being both gay and athletic in a culture where A great collection of stories by some INCREDIBLY talented Black writers told over the course of one Blackout event in summer heatwave in New York City。 Excellent on audio, with a full cast narration - standout stories included the ones by Tiffany D。 Jackson, Angie Thomas and Nic Stone。 Many of the characters are queer, coming to terms with their sexuality and struggling with being out and open。 One young man is having difficulty coming to terms with being both gay and athletic in a culture where that is very much still taboo。 Another girl has a hard breakup with a girlfriend who didn't want to be out。 Full of heart and heartache, these stories are written by people at the top of their game。 。。。more

Books & Dreams (Monisha)

Perfect for summer reading, Blackout is a YA romance novella collection by superstar Black authors Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D。 Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon。Setup: On a hot hot summer day, NYC has a power blackout that cuts electricity to the entire city。Concept: Six interconnected novella-length love stories feature Black teens experiencing new love, old love, straight love, queer love, etc。Timing: Set in the present day; created during COVID-19 quarantine Perfect for summer reading, Blackout is a YA romance novella collection by superstar Black authors Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D。 Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon。Setup: On a hot hot summer day, NYC has a power blackout that cuts electricity to the entire city。Concept: Six interconnected novella-length love stories feature Black teens experiencing new love, old love, straight love, queer love, etc。Timing: Set in the present day; created during COVID-19 quarantinePurpose: For Black and brown youth to read romances where characters who look and love like themselves "get big love stories。"Each novella is as unique as its author。 Small sections of one are interwoven between each of the other stores while another is filled with footnotes。 One features a philosophy-loving Uber-type driver and another takes place in a senior citizen assisted living community。 One involves teens from Mississippi on a school-sponsored trip, and another is set primarily on the subway。 The novel culminates with all of the primary characters enjoying a street party that's mentioned in each story。I enjoyed reading this on a hot and humid Saturday, but it wasn't created for middle-aged white women like me - I'd love to read some #ownvoices reviews。 I hope it find its way into the hands of readers for whom it was written。 Thank you to Quill Tree Books, HarperCollins, and EpicReads for the review copy; all thoughts are my own。 。。。more

4。5 for me。 I need a Blackout 2 bc this was what I needed years ago。 Six Black couples that come from different economic, social, religious and ethnic backgrounds。 *exhales in greatness*I didn't even have a favorite couple, each couple was just so unique and connected very well together。 I'm also a sucker for different stories all being interconnected-s/o to Twig for making everything happen。Now I will rave about each couple!Tammi and Kareem: These two right her, lord, messy messy messy。 I love 4。5 for me。 I need a Blackout 2 bc this was what I needed years ago。 Six Black couples that come from different economic, social, religious and ethnic backgrounds。 *exhales in greatness*I didn't even have a favorite couple, each couple was just so unique and connected very well together。 I'm also a sucker for different stories all being interconnected-s/o to Twig for making everything happen。Now I will rave about each couple!Tammi and Kareem: These two right her, lord, messy messy messy。 I love how their root problem is that neither of them took initiative。 Tammi expected for Kareem to knock on her door while Kareem was waiting for her to explain herself。 The tension left so much room for hate sex, I was dying laughing。 Then there were moments like him tying her shoe and I just closed my eyes because I couldn't handle the feels。 I appreciated the conversations on Kareem not being able to afford the same colleges as Tammi。Fav pages for Tammi and Kareem: 121-122 -> quote "He turns his head, letting his cheek rest against my leg。 "What happened to us?" he whispers。" -----------------------Tremaine and JJ: Let's start off with the fact that both of the dudes are bisexual (and there both like 6'3)。 When Tammi said she had a little brother, I was not expecting for Tremaine to have "deflowered" the quarterback and his girlfriend- in fact I hollered。 Also, thank you Nic Stone for taking the time and having 3 queer men be sensitivity readers- its nice to see people taking representation seriously。 Being an athlete, I completely understood where JJ was coming from and appreciated Tremaine taking time to understand him。 The entire masquerade part really reeled me in and I liked knowing JJ is somewhat an unreliable narrator because he clearly is picking and choosing what he wants to acknowledge。 Then Tremaine holds him accountable, we love to see it。Fav quote pg。 52- "He goes on: "I'm honestly not scared at all right now。 Just looking forward to seeing you with your mask off。"----------------------Nella and Joss: Both should be arrested for being so fine。 My favorite thing about this couple was that we were able to see how they were with different people。 Joss and her former partner having an opposites attract type thing and also growing together and realizing they wanted different things。 With Nella I felt so sorry。 Twig obviously cant tell drunk straight girls from actual gay girls。 The whole thing about Nella's grandparents meeting during the Blackout creating a parallel to Nella and Joss was just *chef's kiss* Also Nella a pisces with an afro- we the best in the business。 Joss validating Nella's vulnerabilities ughhhhh where is my Joss!?!?Fav quote pg。 94- "Nella: Because you broke my fucking heart。"-------------------------Tristan and Lana: I love libraries, so bonus points for these two。 It felt like the Black version of National Treasure。 Lana's mind is an interesting one to be in。 Tristan calling her elefantita and Lana keeping a scrapbook knowing she would remember everything anyway。 Tristan also representing Afro-Colombians。 fact- Colombia, Brazil, Dominican Republic and Haiti are a part of the top 5 countries where you can find the most Black people outside of Africa!!!Also this is the same Tristan who wrote Nella a love letter had me cackling。 Lana must also be the granddaughter to the lady who gives Nella and Joss a ride to Brooklyn。 And Lana's brother Langston is on the basketball team with JJ。 Lana ends up choosing 'If Beale Street Could Talk' by James Baldwin- you can never go wrong with Baldwin。Fav quote pg。 156- "His warmth is hotter than the blackout heat wave。"----------------------Kayla, Tre'Shawn, Micah:M-I-Crooked Letter-Crooked Letter-I-Crooked Letter-Crooked Letter-I-Humpback-Humpback-I = Mississippi 。。。 sorry I had to。 Ok, so Kayla is cousins with Lana and Langston。 As soon as Kayla bff, jazmyn started stating the reasons she aint like Tre'Shawn, I laughed。 She started describing him in real odd ways lmao。 Kayla family/ Kayla being in the womb in the 2003 Blackout was also a nice touch。 I fucked with Micah, his honesty was refreshing。Fav quote pg。 197- "I'm saying that maybe instead of choosing one of them, you could chose yourself, my dear。" Tammi/Tremaine father aint never lie!!-----------------Seymour and Grace: Last but never least!!!! I love the name Seymour。 Grace is also Lana bff, so there's that connection。 I love that they were both Jamaican and Grace has an immigrant experience。 I understood Seymour's inner turmoil about the opportunities he's sacrificing for his family。 Never an easy choice。 Grace realizing her growth isnt a problem but Derrick wanting her to stay the same was instead-powerful。 its ok to let some things sink, to stop carrying around extra baggage。fav quote pg。 241- "He likes me。 This version of me right here。" it kind of reminded me of Gloria, Melvin and Moto Moto from Madagascar if you know what I mean。-----------------Alright Im done with characters I loved this book and can't wait to read some more books by some of these authors (Ive read from most already)。 I hope this gets turned into a movie。 。。。more

Blackout is a fun, fast read, filled to the brim with Black joy。 Although I did wish for more individuality in the writing styles of the various contributing authors, as well as the stories themselves, the quality of writing overall is high, allowing the reader to sink into the story。 The interconnected nature of the stories is fun, but ultimately slightly gimmicky — it doesn’t do anything with this interesting structure, leading each piece of interconnectedness to feel like nothing more than a Blackout is a fun, fast read, filled to the brim with Black joy。 Although I did wish for more individuality in the writing styles of the various contributing authors, as well as the stories themselves, the quality of writing overall is high, allowing the reader to sink into the story。 The interconnected nature of the stories is fun, but ultimately slightly gimmicky — it doesn’t do anything with this interesting structure, leading each piece of interconnectedness to feel like nothing more than a little Easter egg。 Despite being a bit dull at times, these stories are sure to resonate with many teen readers。 Thank you to NetGalley and HarperCollins Children’s Books for the ARC! 。。。more

I have mixed feelings about short story collections。 Too often, the stories are hit or miss, mostly because the collections are assembled out of already-existing material rather than a carefully curated collection。 Anthologies are curated; however, I prefer story collections written by one author rather than those collected around a single theme or idea。 The idea of picking and choosing stories doesn't sit well with me; with collections, it's all or nothing。 Far more rare, though, is the collect I have mixed feelings about short story collections。 Too often, the stories are hit or miss, mostly because the collections are assembled out of already-existing material rather than a carefully curated collection。 Anthologies are curated; however, I prefer story collections written by one author rather than those collected around a single theme or idea。 The idea of picking and choosing stories doesn't sit well with me; with collections, it's all or nothing。 Far more rare, though, is the collection of interconnected short stories—think David Mitchell's 'Ghostwritten' or 'Cloud Atlas。' While the stories can stand on their own, together they create a larger narrative。 In short, this kind of collection is one where the whole is greater than the sum of its parts。'Blackout' is a collection of interconnected short stories with a twist—it's also an anthology! And it's a novel! Dhonielle Clayton, Tiffany D。 Jackson, Nic Stone, Angie Thomas, Ashley Woodfolk, and Nicola Yoon take turns telling stories about one day in New York。 Each story centers on a different pair of adolescents navigating their way through the pitfalls of love and relationships while navigating their way through the city during a blackout。 When you put these writers together with this premise, the result should be nothing short of a) the next great YA novel and b) a license to print money。And it is! Buy this book。 Read it now。 That's all there is to it。There are "no skips" in this collection。 Jackson's story, "The Long Walk," begins the day's narrative; rather than provide the entirety of her story at once, Jackson hands off to Stone。 After Stone's story concludes, Jackson's picks back up, and that is how the narrative continues through to its conclusion。 Characters from each story occasionally appear in other stories, which helps to maintain the interconnectedness of the experience。 Community, of course, is one of themes of this narrative; this is a work that exists because of the pandemic。 Rather than some of the films created during the pandemic that take advantage of the separation those of us who spent the last year in video conference digital boxes felt, these authors created a sense of connection in 'Blackout。' I found that that sense of connection weaves its way not just into the stories but also through the overarching narrative。 After spending the entire pandemic feeling disconnected from others, 'Blackout' was welcome relief。If you're still wondering what 'Blackout' is "about" (in case you need one more reason to go read it), what isn't it about? LGBT relationships。。。check。 Love triangles。。。check。 Unrequited love。。。check。 Breakups。。。check。 Meet cutes。。。check。Is 'Blackout' a novel? Well, it is if enough people say that it is。 As I mentioned above, there is an overarching narrative that, while loose, does more than enough to make each of the stories feel cohesive。 If I had any complaint about 'Blackout,' it would be that any of these stories could have easily lived as part of a larger novel written solely by its creator。 I want to know what happens to Stone's characters on the train, Thomas' characters on the bus, Yoon's rideshare characters, and。。。well, all the other characters。 Maybe we'll get 'After Blackout' soon。 Until the superteam gets together again, though, we'll still have one of the best YA novels of 2021。 。。。more

It should come as no surprise that when you assemble this roster of talent, led by the brilliant Dhonielle Clayton, good things will happen, and in the case of Blackout, the end result is a romance infused anthology that is both vital and compelling。 And despite its lofty premise, Clayton has assembled (along with herself) these five story-telling machines that can prose-battle with the best of them, so yeah, I’m sure confidence was very high going into this sucker。 It’s like a rap battle only t It should come as no surprise that when you assemble this roster of talent, led by the brilliant Dhonielle Clayton, good things will happen, and in the case of Blackout, the end result is a romance infused anthology that is both vital and compelling。 And despite its lofty premise, Clayton has assembled (along with herself) these five story-telling machines that can prose-battle with the best of them, so yeah, I’m sure confidence was very high going into this sucker。 It’s like a rap battle only there are no losers, well, maybe white people who don’t normally get romance this good。It’s true that Blackout isn’t as simple an idea as it seems, certainly not when it comes to execution, and under Clayton, this thing just keeps on working, story after story。 The anthology/short story format is a different muscle, and these authors seem to revel in being given the greenlight to remove almost everything not relevant to a story, while maintaining wit and cleverness。 Not once is the artistry diminished through fluff and their thoughts are precise and crisp making Blackout a VERY easy read。 Most will get through this in one day either as a summer read outside with a cool drink, or under the covers late a night with a flashlight。What makes Blackout unique is Jackson’s The Long Walk, which is told over five parts and spread throughout the book。 These five parts off-set the other shorts, providing the connective tissue as the story’s mains, exes Tammi and Kareem, are forced to make the long (and sweaty) walk from Harlem to Brooklyn after a chance encounter at the Apollo Theatre, where they are both hoping to land an internship。 Short on money, battery life, and with the blackout is full effect, they slowly make their way through the city, forced to deal with all sorts of realities, including the details of their breakup。 The destination is Twig’s block party in their neighborhood where Kareem is DJ’ing, and where all six stories ultimately converge。 What the state of their relationship will be by the time they arrive and what affect that will have on their future(s) is Jackson’s focus, besides presenting the book’s perspective。For the full review, click the link below!https://www。cinelinx。com/off-beat/bla。。。 。。。more
