Summary

Set in England in the early 19th century, Pride and Prejudice tells the story of Mr。 and Mrs。 Bennet's five unmarried daughters after the rich and eligible Mr。 Bingley and his status-conscious friend, Mr。 Darcy, have moved into their neighborhood。
When Elizabeth Bennet meets Mr。 Darcy she is repelled by his overbearing pride, and prejudice towards her family。 But the Bennet girls are in need of financial security in the shape of husbands, so when Darcy's friend, the affable Mr。 Bingley, forms an attachment to Jane, Darcy becomes increasingly hard to avoid。 Polite society will be turned upside down in this witty drama of friendship, rivalry, and love—Jane Austen's classic romance novel。

Boring。 I’m sorry but i guess these types of books aren’t for me。

And with this, I officially bid adieu to Austen。 You're either a Brontë girl or an Austen girl and I'm definitely the former。 To paraphrase and modernize Charlotte Brontë's critique, Jane Austen has written some of the most boring, annoyingly superficial characters and P&P is no exception。 The actual writing is lovely, but I honestly couldn't stand Elizabeth Bennet。 The simple plot wasn't enough to make up for that for me。 And with this, I officially bid adieu to Austen。 You're either a Brontë girl or an Austen girl and I'm definitely the former。 To paraphrase and modernize Charlotte Brontë's critique, Jane Austen has written some of the most boring, annoyingly superficial characters and P&P is no exception。 The actual writing is lovely, but I honestly couldn't stand Elizabeth Bennet。 The simple plot wasn't enough to make up for that for me。 。。。more

A really good book with a lot of irony and romance and stuff like that。 I liked it but the English absolutely killed me and that's why it took a while and I didn't like it that much。 A really good book with a lot of irony and romance and stuff like that。 I liked it but the English absolutely killed me and that's why it took a while and I didn't like it that much。 。。。more

Did I only read this because I though it would make me cool to read classics and then give up 60 pages in because it was JUST DIALOGUE。 maybe。 Or maybe I stopped because my reading level was too advanced for it and I was bored with the lack of literary skill。 (You may have gathered that it’s not the latter) but I’m sure I’ll come back to it at some point and finish it once I don’t require a bloodthirsty battle every other page to keep me entertained

I love books。 I always have。 The act of reading in and of itself brings me pleasure。 Sometimes, as I go from one word to another I feel like I'm listening to a kind of music that cannot be heard but must be felt。 The escapism that the world of another mind provides me has been a great refuge for me whenever I have had a hard time。 Despite of all this, I should admit that it gets more and more difficult for me to be completely immersed in a book as I get older。 I think it's one of the disadvantag I love books。 I always have。 The act of reading in and of itself brings me pleasure。 Sometimes, as I go from one word to another I feel like I'm listening to a kind of music that cannot be heard but must be felt。 The escapism that the world of another mind provides me has been a great refuge for me whenever I have had a hard time。 Despite of all this, I should admit that it gets more and more difficult for me to be completely immersed in a book as I get older。 I think it's one of the disadvantage of having to deal with adulthood。 When I read a book, I'm completely in when I'm reading it, but as soon as I close it to go and take care of my life, it's just wiped out of me before I get back to it again。 This sometimes bothers me because when I was younger a book could steal away from me my sleep time or attention of anything else。 Sometimes I just had to sit right where I was and finished the book so that I could get back to real life。 Now realities are just more powerful than the fantasies of another person。 So when a book comes along that brings me back the kind of joy that I experienced whenever I could become devoid of my surroundings for hours, that book secures a special place close to my heart。It wasn't even my first time reading Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice。 I have reread it at different stages of my life。 Each time, It has evoked very different emotions and thoughts in me。 Every time I read it I found something new and profound in the prose and the characters that makes it even more special。 It's a kind of book I will continue to go back to over and over again while I'm still alive。 And more importantly, This book always succeeds at cutting off my ties from the world of realities。 Once I'm put in Longbourn that's just it。 You can imagine how agonizing it must be for me to leave my friends behind in Pemberley at the end。 Austen's deep understanding of her society that made her capable of creating such sophisticated characters at a very young age amazes me。 Many aspects of her portrayal of female perspective remains relevant a few hundred years after she first wrote the book。 This book is definitely more than just a story about some young women hunting husbands as some people would like to claim。 And surely it is not a classic example of chick lit set in the backdrop of regency era。 Having had to secure your way in life by finding a proper husband is a fact of that era that cannot and should not be ignored。 Just imagine that Austen brought to life a character who valued her sense of integrity and personal value over a financially secured future in a time when not many could afford a decision of the kind。 Five starts is not just enough for this book。 I wished there was an option for when you find a book more than amazing! 。。。more

I started reading this book last year but I gave up after reading just 2 or 3 pages。 I mean the words used in this are a little outdated。 But I had heard of this book so much that I could not just leave it unread。。。so this year I again picked it up and started reading and I have to tell you that once you get familiar with the characters and their personalities it is a really good story。Elizabeth is a very sweet, kind and quick witted but she is also very stubborn。 She is never intentionally rude I started reading this book last year but I gave up after reading just 2 or 3 pages。 I mean the words used in this are a little outdated。 But I had heard of this book so much that I could not just leave it unread。。。so this year I again picked it up and started reading and I have to tell you that once you get familiar with the characters and their personalities it is a really good story。Elizabeth is a very sweet, kind and quick witted but she is also very stubborn。 She is never intentionally rude to people but she never hesitates to speak up her mind。 On the other hand Mr Darcy is very arrogant, rich and has autism。 The opening line It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife。 shows the mindset of Elizabeth's mother and we can see at many points that how different Elizabeth is from her mother and sisters。I loved how their relationship evolved from hate to love and my favourite part of the novel was when Mr Darcy helped Elizabeth's sister and went through all the trouble just for Elizabeth。 Despite of Pride of Mr Darcy and Prejudice of Elizabeth they make a great pair together。。 。。。more

I listened to this as an audiobook, and honestly didn't enjoy it too much just because it wasn't that interesting。 There were parts where I was actually engaged in what was going on, but I often zoned out so didn't fully get the gist of the story。 It was very slow, and not a lot happened。 There were many characters, and even with the reader's brilliant different voices I just couldn't really keep track as they seemed pretty similar。 I would like to listen or read to this again in the future, but I listened to this as an audiobook, and honestly didn't enjoy it too much just because it wasn't that interesting。 There were parts where I was actually engaged in what was going on, but I often zoned out so didn't fully get the gist of the story。 It was very slow, and not a lot happened。 There were many characters, and even with the reader's brilliant different voices I just couldn't really keep track as they seemed pretty similar。 I would like to listen or read to this again in the future, but I can't say I am particularly bothered。 。。。more

Jane Austen’s most beloved book is always a delight to experience, and the new Audible dramatisation does a great job of bringing all the characters to life。

This is a great book! I highly recommend to anyone who likes or wants to try a good classic book。 It is harder to read but only because the speech and wording of things is different than we talk and act and call things now。 Watching the movie prior to reading it made it easier to picture characters and what’s going on in my head。 Over all this book is great。 They don’t call it a classic for nothing!

I have read this masterpiece more times that I can recall。 I love her sentences in this book-some great lines。 I find the main character to be one of my favorites in a book ever。 Her development is wonderful。

Absolutely LOVED this story。 I can definitely see why so many say this is the original enemies to lovers trope。 I felt like the first half of the book was slightly boring and mundane but the love line between Darcy and Elizabeth really picks up in the second half。 I loved how Jane Austen developed Darcy's character throughout the story and she's definitely raised the bar for me with any new male characters I may come across in the future。 The 2005 film with Keira knightley is beautiful as well a Absolutely LOVED this story。 I can definitely see why so many say this is the original enemies to lovers trope。 I felt like the first half of the book was slightly boring and mundane but the love line between Darcy and Elizabeth really picks up in the second half。 I loved how Jane Austen developed Darcy's character throughout the story and she's definitely raised the bar for me with any new male characters I may come across in the future。 The 2005 film with Keira knightley is beautiful as well and I definitely recommend that you watch it if you've read the book already (or even if you haven't!)。 Overall, stunning writing, plot and characters。 。。。more

I tried reading this book so many times over the past 15 years。 Couldn't get past page 60 or so。 Just listened to it and made it through。 I'm sorry, the characters are just awful people。 All of them, not just the obvious ones。 And the letters, monologues, and introspection as the main literary means to tell the tale exausted me。 I'm sure that's why I coulsn't get into it in print。 Oh well, we can't all love Jane Austen。 I tried reading this book so many times over the past 15 years。 Couldn't get past page 60 or so。 Just listened to it and made it through。 I'm sorry, the characters are just awful people。 All of them, not just the obvious ones。 And the letters, monologues, and introspection as the main literary means to tell the tale exausted me。 I'm sure that's why I coulsn't get into it in print。 Oh well, we can't all love Jane Austen。 。。。more

Rereading a book is fun。 And I confess, it's been way too many years since I read Pride & Prejudice。 I picked the Annotated one because, well, I wanted context and explanations, for things that the reader at the time would have understood, or what scholarship can now tell us。It was a delight having all that information while I was reading。My first read as a teen was as someone who didn't get the class differences at play here; they had servants so how where they not rich? Why would people take a walk around the room? I better appreciated the class differences this time around。 I also better saw that Mr。 Bennet was part of the problem and hardly faultless。 What an odd pair, the parents。 And how little was done for the daughters。I also appreciated the structure, the timing of what was going on when。Also interesting: how in the background servants are。 They are necessary and needed for the Bennets' life, and the lives of all around them, of course, but so little attention is given to them。 But of course what was best was the dialogue! Elizabeth! Darcy! Character growth! The look of a year in the life of a family, the ups and downs。My big question for you all: what biography of Jane Austen do you recommend? 。。。more
