Summary

Years of trying unsuccessfully to conceive a child have broken more than Angie DeSaria’s heart。 Following a painful divorce, she moves back to her small Pacific Northwest hometown and takes over management of her family’s restaurant。 In West End, where life rises and falls like the tides, Angie’s fortunes will drastically change yet again when she meets and befriends a troubled young woman。

Angie hires Lauren Ribido because she sees something special in the seventeen-year-old。 They quickly form a deep bond, and when Lauren is abandoned by her mother, Angie offers the girl a place to stay。 But nothing could have prepared Angie for the far-reaching repercussions of this act of kindness。 Together, these two women—one who longs for a child and the other who longs for a mother’s love—will be tested in ways that neither could have imagined。

Another tear-jerker by Kristin Hannah! Her books feel so real that they make me think that they could happen to me。 Family doesn’t end with blood。 This book inspires me to take care of others when I can。

Somewhat predictable。 Several repetitive scenes/lines。 But overall it was enjoyable。

The lives of Lauren and Angela couldn't have begun differently, with Lauren living in poverty and Angela in plenty。 The social interactions with her peers was a little ignored and the love of a rich young man was pretty improbable, but the story about longings and available options in life kept the story moving。 The lives of Lauren and Angela couldn't have begun differently, with Lauren living in poverty and Angela in plenty。 The social interactions with her peers was a little ignored and the love of a rich young man was pretty improbable, but the story about longings and available options in life kept the story moving。 。。。more

First book by this author that I’ve read and overall, I really enjoyed it。 Strong female characters with real emotions。 Good family dynamics, social settings and engaging descriptions top off the book。 I certainly connected with the main characters and cried for them and cheered for them on their emotional journey。 I didn’t give this a higher rating for a few reasons。 First, I found the number of times it talked about the rain to be annoying。 Was like carrying on a conversation with a Brit。 Yes, First book by this author that I’ve read and overall, I really enjoyed it。 Strong female characters with real emotions。 Good family dynamics, social settings and engaging descriptions top off the book。 I certainly connected with the main characters and cried for them and cheered for them on their emotional journey。 I didn’t give this a higher rating for a few reasons。 First, I found the number of times it talked about the rain to be annoying。 Was like carrying on a conversation with a Brit。 Yes, it rains a lot in the Pacific Northwest。 Tell me something I don’t know! I also found the primary male characters to be too stereotypical, and Conlan in particular just jumped from cold to hot with no transition。 The whole Angie-Conlan relationship just didn’t go through the right transitions for me。 Felt as if Hannah just decided it should be a certain way by a certain time and forgot to bring the reader along。 Overall, Lauren is more developed as a character than Angie。 I wanted more depth and emotional growth for Angie and just didn’t get it。 Finally, Maria’s conversations with Papa just seem to be an odd add。 Does she talk to any other dead people? Why does she do this? Was more than just part of the grieving process, but didn’t have a point。 I’d certainly put this on your reading list, and will try more of her books, but can’t say I’m in a hurry to do so。 She was highly recommended by a friend, so perhaps I just had higher expectations than she was able to meet。 。。。more

Least favorite Kristin Hannah book by far

I read this one because I loved the richness and storytelling prowess of The Nightingale so much, and was eager to read more from this author。 Honestly I was disappointed。 This book reminded me of a Hallmark holiday movie -- sugary sweet, somehow things all come together at the end, incomprehensible and unrealistic actions by characters, drama for drama-sake, etc。 Lots of unnecessary references to brand names throughout the whole book cheapened (and, quite frankly, dated) the story for me。

I'm always torn reviewing Kristin's books because at times I feel like I'm reading a made for tv Hallmark movie。 I'm always torn reviewing Kristin's books because at times I feel like I'm reading a made for tv Hallmark movie。 。。。more

Well I read this book in two days, could not put it down。 I think that we can all relate to the trials and triumphs, the deep pit falls and the pick me ups too! This is life and Kristin Hannah does a great job in making it readable, relatable and enjoyable all at the same time! This is a great summer read for sure。

Cut to the chase。 This Kristin Hannah backlist was a hit for me! I really liked this one! It’s KH at her best with complicated and memorable characters; a beautiful setting, in the Pacific Northwest (as usual) and a heartbreaking yet hopeful storyline。I don’t normally post trigger warnings but this book has a major one as a main thread throughout。 If you are a sensitive person and have struggled with infertility or losing a baby, and you are still feeling pretty raw about that; it might not be t Cut to the chase。 This Kristin Hannah backlist was a hit for me! That’s because Angie’s family runs a small hometown Italian restaurant and I could actually smell the garlic and simmering tomato sauce when I was reading this。It’s just such a great story。 Angie hires Lauren to work in the restaurant, who is a super smart 17 year old who desperately wants to be loved by her own mother, who never rises to the challenge。 Angie takes Lauren under her wing and they help each other battle their own demons。 I don’t want to tell you too much about the plot because in typical Kristin Hannah fashion, the storyline is multi-layered but you will not be disappointed。 Highly recommend this one! 。。。more

I love everything I have ever read by Kristin Hannah, however, this one was hard for me to get through。 Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, just not one of my favorites of hers。 I love everything I have ever read by Kristin Hannah, however, this one was hard for me to get through。 Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the book, just not one of my favorites of hers。 。。。more

Really enjoyed this quick read! Can definitely enjoy how Kristin's writing has developed since some of her older books like this one- but she has always had a talent for creating characters you can't help but fall in love with! 3。7/5 Really enjoyed this quick read! As a woman who couldn’t have children, I really felt for this character。

I love Kristin Hannah! Another great book。 As you read, you think the ending is predictable but not so fast。 Love the message that family is who you make it out to be and the healing can come from the most unexpected places。

Alex Gerling

I really liked reading this!! Kind of hoped for a different ending。 Overall still good though
