Summary

Get ready to meet a new rock group! From zippy, little pebbles to big strong boulders, the rocks (and their ladybug friend) get together to play and roll around their favorite hill, only to find that one of their friends, Ricky, can't roll with them。 Unlike all of the others, who are all round, Ricky can't roll because he's flat on one side。 Determined not to leave their friend behind, the rocks and the ladybug set out to help Ricky roll around - one way or another。

The lesson is that you can do anything if you keep at it which seems like a decent moral on the surface。 The rocks in the story all have charming personalities that helped bridge a lesson in the power of inclusivity, compassion, and friendship。 A good lesson to teach students that not everyone is built/made the name。 We all have our own shape and size。

This was an excellent book for a read aloud。 Introducing children to the idea that it is OK to be different and shows them how to adapt to the world to accomplish the tasks at hand。 The different rocks and their cartoon expressions are adorable and the vocabulary used is very easy for the children to understand。 Overall, a fantastic book。

This was a good book。 Would work great for anger children in school。

Cute。 Rhyme-y。 Illustrations are great。 What’s not to love!

This book was great。 This book was about a rock that couldn’t roll and there were other rocks that could roll and also I liked how they came up with a solution。 The funniest part was when a rock said does anyone have a towel because of course rocks don’t have a towel

Angela

How do you make a tissue dance ? This and great friend advice to be had from a bunch of rolling stones, inside this book。

This was a cute story about some determined rock friends who seek a way to help their friend Ricky (a rock with a flat side) roll down a hill。 It's fun and we'll illustrated。 This was a cute story about some determined rock friends who seek a way to help their friend Ricky (a rock with a flat side) roll down a hill。 It's fun and we'll illustrated。 。。。more

Loved the artwork and creative cast of characters in this one!

This book discusses that all the rocks like to roll down the hill。 There is one rock that can not roll down the hill like the rest of them。

I could say things, but others have said them better。 This is a big nope。 Imagine how devastating it would be to read this to a trans kid, or a child in a wheel chair。

Ricky is a rock as are all his friends。 But Ricky is different, he can't roll。 He is not afraid of rolling, but he is FLAT on one side - not ROUND - so he doesn't roll。His friends have a great time rolling down the hill and encourage Ricky to join。 Then they carry him up a very steep slope so he can SLIDE down。 (Now, that is innovative thinking。) The gluing of rubber balls onto him so he could bounce down the hill was also great thinking and quite the team effort。 The final winning idea was to m Ricky is a rock as are all his friends。 But Ricky is different, he can't roll。 He is not afraid of rolling, but he is FLAT on one side - not ROUND - so he doesn't roll。His friends have a great time rolling down the hill and encourage Ricky to join。 Then they carry him up a very steep slope so he can SLIDE down。 (Now, that is innovative thinking。) The gluing of rubber balls onto him so he could bounce down the hill was also great thinking and quite the team effort。 The final winning idea was to make a mud prosthetic to make Ricky round so he could roll。 And roll he did。OK。 Now for the somewhat negative take。 Is it OK for Ricky to be different? Does he have to be round and roll? The sliding seemed like fun。 Are his friends going to be consistent with their care so that Ricky will continue to be ROUND?It is a great book to encourage being inclusive and pointing out that everyone is different in some way, not always so obvious。 Like the introvert who we always seem to want to convert to being an extrovert。 Ricky has a mind and a voice, spend some time being with Ricky。 。。。more

So you have a group of rocks who all enjoy the same thing。 Great! Let’s have fun together! Wonderful! Really? Seriously? So no one thought that maybe the rocks could occasionally play a different game that Ricky could have been included in? 。。。 I'm kind of appalled。But wait, there’s more 。。。 the one rock that wears glasses is a meteorite, so he’s from another planet。 He’s an alien。 The only one that wears glasses? Gee, another nice message to send to little kids。 So, if I’m getting this right, aliens wear glasses, but local rocks don’t, and any rock that’s shaped differently from the “normal” rocks needs to be changed so that they can be included and the feelings of the “normal” rocks won’t be hurt。 There’s so many layers of wrong in this I don’t even know where to begin unpacking it。 。。。more

Surely the message of this book isn't as it comes across to some readers。。。change your friend who is different so that they may then be celebrated? Was looking for rhyming picture book suggestion for my youth Programming workgroup’s story time revamp project and happened upon this book。 Great illustrations, including a tiny ladybug, Bria, who is a loyal and wise companion to Ricky。 The book can be enjoyed by old and young alike as the theme of love and perseverance can be understood on several levels。 Heck, this book even contains STEM aspects! I enjoyed reading it and I enjoyed sharing it with my granddaughter Ruby。

Ricky, the Rock that Couldn't Roll is a story about a rock named Ricky who is flat on one side。 This makes him different from all of his rock friends, who all are round and roll down the hill together for fun。 Because he is not round, he doesn't fit in or can play with his friends。 One day, Ricky meets a lady bug who helps him by trying to make him be able to roll using clay, bouncy balls, and string。 Many times they failed, but eventually made it work! I loved this book。 I bought this story for my nephew to help encourage perseverance and to remind him that he is loved (as I perceive these to be two great themes in this story。) Also, my nephew and I had a sweet time taking note of all the rocks' faces and names which made the book very engaging and interactive for him (and me, too。) I loved this book。 I bought this story for my nephew to help encourage perseverance and to remind him that he is loved (as I perceive these to be two great themes in this story。) Also, my nephew and I had a sweet time taking note of all the rocks' faces and names which made the book very engaging and interactive for him (and me, too。) 。。。more

Such a good metaphor for prosthetic! This is a really cute book that addresses a few important themes - adversity, perseverance, friendship, acceptance, and inclusion。 Ricky is a rock that can't roll because he is flat on one side。 All of the other rocks have so much fun rolling down hills but Ricky isn't able to。 He is not like the others, and instead of having fun with them he is forced to watch from the sideline。 His friends want to help。 They try to teach him how to roll。 They try to push him down the hill。 It did not work。 But This is a really cute book that addresses a few important themes - adversity, perseverance, friendship, acceptance, and inclusion。 Ricky is a rock that can't roll because he is flat on one side。 All of the other rocks have so much fun rolling down hills but Ricky isn't able to。 He is not like the others, and instead of having fun with them he is forced to watch from the sideline。 His friends want to help。 They try to teach him how to roll。 They try to push him down the hill。 It did not work。 But his friends do not stop trying。 "We're here for you, brother。 We'll get you to roll, one way or another。" It warms my heart to see the other rocks get creative and come together to find a way to help Ricky roll! While I'm seeing a lot of knocks on the artwork, I found that to be the one redeeming factor of this book。 The biggest problem I had with it was the message。 I understand what Miletsky was going for, that good friends and hope can get you through tough times, but the execution was poor。 Ricky couldn't roll down the hill like everyone else, no, but he COULD slide down the hill。 This seems like a good setup to teach kids about uniqueness and their own special abilities, but instead everyone used m While I'm seeing a lot of knocks on the artwork, I found that to be the one redeeming factor of this book。 The biggest problem I had with it was the message。 I understand what Miletsky was going for, that good friends and hope can get you through tough times, but the execution was poor。 Ricky couldn't roll down the hill like everyone else, no, but he COULD slide down the hill。 This seems like a good setup to teach kids about uniqueness and their own special abilities, but instead everyone used mud, sticks, vines, etc。 to CHANGE Ricky and make him round so that he could roll like everyone else。 While that may go over a child reader's head, it irked me quite a bit。 That's like saying that a person in a wheelchair, while they can get around and spend time with their able-bodied friends, isn't "enough"。 Aside from the disappointing story, the writing and the rhymes didn't flow well。 I simply didn't enjoy it。Miletsky kickstarted this book and on the book's Kickstarter page he explains that he was inspired to write this book because he has a young daughter with cerebral palsy but also because he personally was unsatisfied with other children's books that discuss disabilities。 I found the way that he kind of tore them to shreds to be aggressive and in poor taste。 He basically calls them tone deaf when I actually found his own book to be tone deaf for the the reason I first stated above。 I'm thinking that the mud, vines, etc。 were meant to represent help from loved ones and medical professionals, or perhaps medical devices that help disabled peoples live a normal life, but it could easily be misconstrued。 When I read the book without any context or knowledge that this was intended to represent disability, I simply took it to mean that one must change to fit in with everyone around them。 And being the message that came through for me, I wouldn't think to share this book with my Autistic younger brother whom I assist in caring for。 Here's the link to the Kickstarter page if you'd like to check it out for yourself: https://www。kickstarter。com/projects/。。。 Kudos to Erin Wozniak for carrying this book。 I will certainly keep an eye out for more of her artwork。 The book wasn't terrible, just poorly executed (in my opinion, WHICH IS ALL THIS IS。 An opinion。 Don't fight me。) If anyone does get satisfaction or entertainment from this book, then that's great for them。 No hate。 It's rare that I give such an in-depth review for any book, let alone a picture book, but I just wanted to put it out there in case such insight could be helpful to other potential readers, teachers, or caregivers。 。。。more
