Summary

Maine game warden Mike Bowditch finds himself in a life-or-death chase in this next thriller in the bestselling mystery series by Edgar Award nominee Paul Doiron, Dead by Dawn

Mike Bowditch is fighting for his life。 After being ambushed on a dark winter road, his Jeep crashes into a frozen river。 Trapped beneath the ice in the middle of nowhere, having lost his gun and any way to signal for help, Mike fights his way to the surface。 But surviving the crash is only the first challenge。 Whoever set the trap that ran him off the road is still out there, and they’re coming for him。

Hours earlier, Mike was called to investigate the suspicious drowning of a wealthy professor。 Despite the death being ruled an accident, his elegant, eccentric daughter-in-law insists the man was murdered。 She suspects his companion that day, a reclusive survivalist and conspiracy theorist who accompanied the professor on his fateful duck-hunting trip—but what exactly was the nature of their relationship? And was her own sharp-tongued daughter, who inherited the dead man’s fortune, as close to her grandfather as she claims? The accusations lead Mike to a sinister local family who claim to have information on the crime。 But when his Jeep flies into the river and unknown armed assailants on snowmobiles chase him through the wilderness, the investigation turns into a fight for survival。

As Mike faces a nightlong battle to stay alive, he must dissect the hours leading up to the ambush and solve two riddles: which one of these people desperately want him dead, and what has he done to incur their wrath?

This is the first Mike Bowditch book I've read, so I can safely say you don't need to read them in order to follow along but it might have helped with connecting more with the characters。 I loved the survivalist aspects of the story and the Wolf。 The action was fast but there was some back & forth with time which was difficult in the beginning but got easier as I read more。 The ending was satisfying。 Thank-you to the author and Goodreads for this advance copy I won in a giveaway。As I stepped out This is the first Mike Bowditch book I've read, so I can safely say you don't need to read them in order to follow along but it might have helped with connecting more with the characters。 I loved the survivalist aspects of the story and the Wolf。 The action was fast but there was some back & forth with time which was difficult in the beginning but got easier as I read more。 The ending was satisfying。 Thank-you to the author and Goodreads for this advance copy I won in a giveaway。As I stepped outside, I saw my breath sparkle in the afternoon sunshine。 I loved the cold because it always made me more conscious of my animal self: strong heart pushing warm blood through my arteries, network of nerves sending electric messages from my fingers and toes to my brain, think skin that was no defense at all against the elements。 。。。more

The chapters alternated between past and present and intertwined storylines in an almost flawless manner。 The wolf was (obviously) my favorite and the relationship between him and Mike added extra depth。 This book is a Bear Grylls adventure meets The Most Dangerous Game。 It’s a thrilling ride that will force you to flip the pages quickly and suspect everyone Mike comes in contact with。 Definitely check it out if you are into survival thrillers。

I can usually figure out "whodunit" before the last chapter, but in this case, I just wasn't sure。 This book has a unique plot, and an interesting yet easy to follow past/present narrative。 People and places are vividly described, so that you are able to paint the picture in your mind。 This book won't sit on my shelf, it will be passed around to all my reader friends so they too can enjoy it。 I will definitely seek out more titles from this author。 I can usually figure out "whodunit" before the last chapter, but in this case, I just wasn't sure。 This book has a unique plot, and an interesting yet easy to follow past/present narrative。 People and places are vividly described, so that you are able to paint the picture in your mind。 This book won't sit on my shelf, it will be passed around to all my reader friends so they too can enjoy it。 I will definitely seek out more titles from this author。 。。。more

Additionally, for me, having spent several years living in the beautiful state of Maine, this series is always like a visit home for me as I read of places that I’ve visited and grown to love。 Maine State Game Warden Mike Bowditch is driving down a dark stretch of isolated road when he drives over a homemade ‘spike strip’ which promptly flattens his tires and sends him careening over an embankment into the icy Kennebec River。 Completely submerged in ice cold water, Mike somehow manages to escape the vehicle, freeing his canine companion as he does so, before the vehicle sinks beneath the ice。 Fighting to get safely to land, Mike must now find a way to warm himself, before frostbite and hypothermia become irreversible。 As he works to save himself, he notices headlights and a flashlight in the distance where his Jeep left the roadway and realizes that someone has returned to be sure the trap had worked。 Several hours beforehand, Mike had paid a visit to a family who had written to him personally to express their dissatisfaction over the Warden’s Service handling of a relative’s death, presumably in an accident, while duck hunting along the same river。 While the case was long considered an accidental death and closed, the story piques Mike’s interest enough to follow up on some interviews of witnesses at the time。 One such person was the deceased’s alleged lover, who Mike suspects may be behind the situation he finds himself in now。 But Mike is only half right…Told in back-and-forth snippets from Mike’s present situation to the preceding events of the same day which landed him here, this book was literally impossible for me to put down! I was sucked in from the first page and read it straight through! A fantastic read, and for those of you not familiar with this series, it is a perfect start! I can’t say enough about it!! This is my first Paul Doiron novel。 Apparently the main character (Mike Bowditch) has a whole series of books。 I really enjoyed this story。 It was well written, fast paced, suspenseful, and rife with tension。 The suspense drew me in, and I couldn’t put it down。 The story goes between the current day and the prior day, but it is so well-written that you’re able to follow the story and you stay invested in it。I highly recommend this story and will be on the look out for other books in this series, This is my first Paul Doiron novel。 Apparently the main character (Mike Bowditch) has a whole series of books。 I really enjoyed this story。 It was well written, fast paced, suspenseful, and rife with tension。 The suspense drew me in, and I couldn’t put it down。 The story goes between the current day and the prior day, but it is so well-written that you’re able to follow the story and you stay invested in it。I highly recommend this story and will be on the look out for other books in this series, as well as others from this author。Thank you to NetGalley, Paul Doiron and St。 Martin’s Press/Minotaur Books for the opportunity to review this ARC。 This review and all opinions are my own。 。。。more

thanks to minotaur books for the ARC of this book。 like every single book by paul doiron (i've read them all), it's almost impossible to take a break when reading the adventures of maine game warden, mike bowditch。 but what makes the books so powerful is more than a thrilling plot (though they all have that)。 mike is a flawed hero, which makes him the most interesting and believable kind。 and the love of nature that both mike and the author share, particularly their love for the state of maine i thanks to minotaur books for the ARC of this book。 like every single book by paul doiron (i've read them all), it's almost impossible to take a break when reading the adventures of maine game warden, mike bowditch。 but what makes the books so powerful is more than a thrilling plot (though they all have that)。 mike is a flawed hero, which makes him the most interesting and believable kind。 and the love of nature that both mike and the author share, particularly their love for the state of maine is always crucial to the books and to my pleasure in reading them。 。。。more

Thanks to NetGalley and St。 Martin's Press for the preview copy of this book。I have loved every one of the Mike Bowditch novels I've read and this is no exception。 I did find that the way the narrative timeline flipped back and forth between past and present to be a bit disconcerting at first, but quickly appreciated the flow。As always, interesting situations, great action and it's in Maine- what's not to like?
