Summary

*Running Time => 10 hrs。*

The Truly Devious series continues as Stevie Bell investigates her first mystery outside of Ellingham Academy in this spine-chilling and hilarious stand-alone mystery。

Stevie Bell did it。 She solved the greatest unsolved mystery of the century。 So, what now?

Figuring it all out - the truth behind Truly Devious and what exactly happened in the Ellingham Affair - has granted Stevie Bell a bit of celebrity in the true crime community。 So she’s not surprised when she gets an email from the man who owns Camp Bounty Lake (now called Camp Wonder Falls), the site of the infamous “Box in the Woods” murders from the 1970s。

Weird things are happening at the camp again, although nothing as sinister as before。 No murders, no bodies posed by the mysterious figure they called The Doll Collector。 But there is a threatening message chalked across a wall。 And a box has appeared, with three grisly dolls inside it。

Stevie accepts a job as a camp counselor so she can figure out what’s going on。 She recruits her friends from Ellingham - Nate, Janelle, and Vi - to become counselors, too, and even Germaine Batt turns up。 Not long after they arrive, the owner of the camp dies in a suspicious hiking accident。

Once again, Stevie will have to solve a cold case from the past before a killer catches up with her in the present。

If you have ever watched a slasher summer camp movie and thought that you could outwit the killer, this is the book for you。 Our favorite high school detective, Stevie Bell, has the chance to solve another cold case when she's invited to investigate the box in the woods mystery。 Four camp counselors snuck away from sleepaway camp to smoke marijuana and listen to Fleetwood Mac and none of them walked back out。 They were brutally and violently murdered in the late 1970s and the small town of Barlo If you have ever watched a slasher summer camp movie and thought that you could outwit the killer, this is the book for you。 Our favorite high school detective, Stevie Bell, has the chance to solve another cold case when she's invited to investigate the box in the woods mystery。 Four camp counselors snuck away from sleepaway camp to smoke marijuana and listen to Fleetwood Mac and none of them walked back out。 They were brutally and violently murdered in the late 1970s and the small town of Barlow Corners has never been the same。 Flash forward to the present and the new owner of Camp Wonderfalls rebranded as Camp Sunny Pines after the murders, is determined to solve the murders and record a true-crime podcast about the process。 Enter Stevie, Janelle, Nate, and David。 Stevie's deductive abilities never fail to impress, and this novel is no exception。 Stevie digs into the history of the town and the witnesses, but someone seems determined to keep Stevie and crew from solving the crime。 Danger lurks around every corner at the camp in the woods, and it will be a race against the clock for Stevie to solve the crime before she becomes its next victim。 The Box in the Woods is a great standalone, but I highly recommend the Truly Devious series if you've not already read it! Another Truly Devious book?! Don’t mind if I do! Honestly, if you haven’t started reading this series, you’re really missing out。 Best YA books I’ve ever read。 I devour them。 You can’t put it down! Maureen Johnson puts the work in and never disappoints!

Oh thank god!! I was so nervous to read this because I had such a love/hate (okay, mostly hate) relationship with the first 3 books in this series, and I really wanted to like this。 It’s probably because I always saw some glimmer of something good in the first 3 books, but the characters just fucking ruined it。 I still didn’t love Stevie or anything, but she was WAY more tolerable。 Honestly, all the things that bugged me in the original series seemed to poof out of existence in this installment。 Oh thank god!! (I mean, it’s still far fetched that this girl figures this stuff out with virtually nothing to go on, but I can suspend disbelief)。Stevie is still a very unrelatable robot person to me- which is fine。 I just don’t get why she becomes so surprised about hormones and the feeling she gets around David。 It’s almost like she’s a complete narcissist and is SHOCKED that she is capable of feeling attracted or care when she likes a boy。Where this book takes place is so good! I love a camp-murder setting。 I loved the Ellingham setting too, but summer camp and woods just go with horror slasher stuff。I would read more from this series if the books are like this one。 And I’m kind of hoping there are more books。。。 which I definitely wasn’t expecting。 。。。more

I have absolutely loved this series so far…is it over? Who knows there is definitely room for more, but also wrapped up nicely。 The first three books in the series were a continuation on the same “case” for Stevie Bell a wonderfully complex character who is a child detective and works hard to get into Ellingham Academy in order to solve a murder there。 Due to that success Stevie is contacted at the beginning of the box in the woods to come to a summer camp and solve a new murder。 She is able to I have absolutely loved this series so far…is it over? I have not read the other books in this series, but I feel that this works just fine as a standalone。I don't want to spoil anything, but this book did not go the way I thought it would。 It truly kept me guessing for the entire book。Well written, the characters were okay。 I do feel like they all only had one trait each and it was greatly exaggerated, but other than that they were great。*Thank you to the publisher for this eARC。 I have not read the other books in this series, but I feel that this works just fine as a standalone。I don't want to spoil anything, but this book did not go the way I thought it would。 It truly kept me guessing for the entire book。Well written, the characters were okay。 I do feel like they all only had one trait each and it was greatly exaggerated, but other than that they were great。*Thank you to the publisher for this eARC。 。。。more

This is a RETURN。 TO FORM。After being disappointed by the third and, as I thought at the time, final book in the Truly Devious "trilogy," I was left wanting more。 I knew Maureen Johnson could write an amazing, compelling mystery, so when I saw this book was coming out, I was ecstatic。 A summer camp murder mystery, reminiscent of oh so many teen slashers (which, yes, of course Nate references。 He is the Randy of the friend group。 iykyk)。 I absolutely love slasher movies, and reading Johnson's tak This is a RETURN。 TO FORM。After being disappointed by the third and, as I thought at the time, final book in the Truly Devious "trilogy," I was left wanting more。 I knew Maureen Johnson could write an amazing, compelling mystery, so when I saw this book was coming out, I was ecstatic。 A summer camp murder mystery, reminiscent of oh so many teen slashers (which, yes, of course Nate references。 He is the Randy of the friend group。 iykyk)。 I absolutely love slasher movies, and reading Johnson's take on them was a joy。She kept the format of alternating chapters between the past and the present, which I always love。 Seeing the crimes as they were discovered in real time gives a little extra oomph than if you just read about them in the past tense, playing catch up in the present day。 I love my girl Stevie and her pals Nate and Janelle。 David。。。wasn't as bad as he has been in previous books, but now he's just boring? He is honestly my biggest gripe with the series as a whole。 Get a better boyfriend, Stevie! The new side characters introduced as part of this case were interesting, though a lot were thrown at you pretty fast and it took a little while for me to be able to remember who was who。 The ending was surprising but made sense in retrospect, and Stevie's big monologue moment to determine who the killer was all those years ago was AWESOME!This does serve as a standalone, with no spoilers to who the culprit is in the first three books, not even naming the characters who die, so you could read this without reading the previous books if you wanted to have a fun summer camp mystery romp。 I definitely recommend the whole series though!Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for providing a copy free for review。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Maureen Johnson’s new book, and it was such a fun way to kick off my summer reading! This YA mystery feels like an 80s slasher flick, Nancy Drew and your favorite true crime podcast all came together for one special event。 While this is a part of Johnson’s Truly Devious, The Box In The Woods acts like a standalone novel, and as someone who hasn’t read the original series, it can easily be enjoyed without having read the first three。💜While gruesome in its d I was lucky enough to receive an ARC of Maureen Johnson’s new book, and it was such a fun way to kick off my summer reading! The ending feels like it comes out of nowhere without any real clues that allow the reader the opportunity to solve it themselves。 Every clue does play its part (even if it’s a bit of stretch) and if you can suspend your disbelief, the ending works in its own way though!💜Filled with diverse characters, haunted small-town vibes and giggle-worthy wit, The Box In The Woods is a super-fun summer read, great for sitting poolside or lounging on the patio! The Box in the Woods claims to be “a stand-alone mystery,” but also it’s noted as being Truly Devious, #4。 So which is it???? The latter。 It’s not a standalone。 You really should read books 1 – 3 before diving into this one。 If you don’t, you won’t know anything about Stevie or her friends or all the things she’d been through leading up to this book。 You won’t know anything about the Ellingham mysteries。 It’d be ridiculous to start on this book。 Just read the others – they’re amazing。 And The Bo The Box in the Woods claims to be “a stand-alone mystery,” but also it’s noted as being Truly Devious, #4。 So which is it???? Absolutely no way I could have called any of that。 Yes, it’s a bit of a ridiculous reveal。 Like, there’s no way anyone could guess it。 But I didn’t mind。 Though I love being able to call a twist, I also like being blindsided。 I love when Stevie gathers people around her and plays out the big reveal。 It’s just so satisfying, whether I ever saw it coming or not。 I hope people don’t discredit this book because of the crazy reveal, because I loved it。 So shook! What an ending!Honestly, if you enjoyed the first three books in this series, you’re going to want to pick up this one, too。 You’re going to like it。 It may not be the Ellingham case, but summer camp murders are just as interesting and you know it。 I love Stevie and her friends (yes, even you, David, though not as much), I love Johnson’s writing and the twisted mysteries she comes up with, and I love the overall atmosphere of these books。 If you love all these things, too, then you definitely want to read The Box in the Woods。 And please join me in begging Maureen Johnson to keep writing these books。Blog | Insta | Twitter 。。。more

I received an advanced reader's copy of this book through netgalley。Maureen Johnson has done it again! The Truly Devious series have been easy to read while still having enough heft to keep things grounded and interesting。 I love, love, love this series, and I was afraid it was all over after book three, since there was a natural end point in that book。 But in number four, it takes a new direction。On her summer break from Ellingham Academy, Stevie is contacted by an entrepreneur named Carson who I received an advanced reader's copy of this book through netgalley。Maureen Johnson has done it again! A YA murder mystery, set in the woods, with a strong female protagonist and her band of high school friends, The Box in the Woods reminded me of one of my favorite YA series, Charlotte Holmes。 Thus, it was unsurprising how much I enjoyed this book!
