Summary

Bestselling author Viola Shipman is at her absolute best with The Clover Girls。 Readers of all ages and backgrounds will love its powerful, redemptive nature and the empowering message at its heart。

Elizabeth, Veronica, Rachel and Emily met at Camp Birchwood as girls in 1985, where over four summers they were the Clover Girls--inseparable for those magical few weeks of freedom--until the last summer that pulled them apart。 Now approaching middle age, the women are facing challenges they never imagined as teens, struggles with their marriages, their children, their careers, and wondering who it is they see when they look in the mirror。

Then Liz, V and Rachel each receive a letter from Emily with devastating news。 She implores the girls who were once her best friends to reunite at Camp Birchwood one last time, to spend a week together revisiting the dreams they'd put aside and repair the relationships they'd allowed to sour。 But the women are not the same idealistic, confident girls who once ruled Camp Birchwood, and perhaps some friendships aren't meant to last forever。。。

Brought back memories of camp and being a kid in Michigan!。

Debra

I love this book。 It brought back wonderful memories of camping as well as the beauty of upper Michigan。 The friendships we develop as children become lost as we become adults。 It is wonderful to read how friendships can be restored。

Penny

It brought back memories of summer camp as a camper。 I especially enjoyed that the camp was set in Michigan。 I also liked the theme of the importance of nourishing our friendships。

Great story of friendships as they come back together after being apart after many years of ill feelings towards each other。 It’s a really good story。

Viola Shipman writes the most beautiful books。 This book is about 4 young girls that become forever friends at a summer camp when they are young。 The first day Emm finds a 4 leaf clover, and so the Clover Girls。 The story is told when the girls are older and they have drifted apart over the years。 It gives a glimpse of each of there lives in the here and now。 Each of them have problems and they come , in response to a letter to each of them from Emm。 You will not be disappointed。

Not perfect but I enjoyed it immensely!

If you are yearning for a summer book filled with 80s or summer camp nostalgia then this is your book -- it is overflowing with remembrances。 This would be a fun read, especially if you have a summer cabin or you are on a camping trip。 Just don't let the drippy popsicle or gooey s'mores marshmallow stick to your pages。 If you are yearning for a summer book filled with 80s or summer camp nostalgia then this is your book -- it is overflowing with remembrances。 This would be a fun read, especially if you have a summer cabin or you are on a camping trip。 Just don't let the drippy popsicle or gooey s'mores marshmallow stick to your pages。 。。。more

In 1985, four girls from different backgrounds head out to summer camp in a northern Michigan resort town。 At Camp Birchwood Emily, Veronica, Elizabeth and Rachel forms an immediate bond。 As their initials spell out, they hail that they will be friends 4-E-V-E-R。 But it didn’t turn out that way。 And in present day, Veronica, once a successful model, struggles with the loss of her independence and a troubled marriage。 Elizabeth (Liz) is divorced, feels she never fulfilled her potential and watche In 1985, four girls from different backgrounds head out to summer camp in a northern Michigan resort town。 At Camp Birchwood Emily, Veronica, Elizabeth and Rachel forms an immediate bond。 As their initials spell out, they hail that they will be friends 4-E-V-E-R。 But it didn’t turn out that way。 And in present day, Veronica, once a successful model, struggles with the loss of her independence and a troubled marriage。 Elizabeth (Liz) is divorced, feels she never fulfilled her potential and watches the decline of her ill mother。 Rachel, a former actress, is a political consultant who appears to have created her persona of a right-wing extremist which has made it hard for her to make any meaningful personal connections。 Each of the women receive a letter from Emily, who we learn early on, has passed away。 While dying of cancer, she made arrangements for her ashes to be brought back to the now shuttered camp with the hope was that in bringing the group together, old wounds can be healed。The Clover Girls is an extremely touching story about friendship and forgiveness。 The three women need to find a way to forgive each other and forgive themselves if they have any chance of restoring their relationships。 Viola Shipman is a pen name for author Wade Rouse。 His ability to write such insightful female characters is quite a testament to his talent。 I spent some of my best summers at a wonderful camp in New York State and decades later, my bunkmates remain some my closest friends so this book hits very close to my heart。 It will have you thinking about your own friendships, your own hopes and dreams and the passage of time。 And the people you have lost。 Rachel aptly comments, “Why do we have such incredible friends when we’re young, and then we lose touch with them? We rarely recreate those same bonds。 Do we grow up and get too busy, or are we just scared of sharing our true selves as adults? What happens to friendships? And, as a result, what happens to us?” Pack some Kleenex。Rated 4。25 stars。 。。。more

This takes place in Michigan between 1985-1989 and in 2021。 The story is about friendship and healing。 I preferred the story in the past to the one in the present。 I didn't like the politics in this story。 I thought that the author could/should have done something different with that part of the story。 This takes place in Michigan between 1985-1989 and in 2021。 The story is about friendship and healing。 I preferred the story in the past to the one in the present。 I didn't like the politics in this story。 I thought that the author could/should have done something different with that part of the story。 。。。more

Loved this novel about 4 women and their relationships that started at a girls camp。 4 ladies with different personalities come back together after one of the four dies。 I never had the chance to go to summer camp, so it was great to read this book。 It was sad, funny, heartbreaking, and lots of reminiscing about what is was like to be a member of such a great camp。 I would recommend this book。

This a wonderful story of 4 girls who met at summer camp and became known as the Clover girls。 Many years later one of the girls sets it up for them to meet again at camp after having tension between them。 Its a great story of redemption。 I love that this author honors his grandmother by using her name。

I was hooked on this book within the first few pages。 I attended a summer camp in the 80s and going there is one of my most precious memories。 I loved the characters in the book and the way they grew and developed throughout the story。 Excellent story!

It must be just me but this book just wasn’t my cup of tea。 I did enjoy parts of it- the description of camp life brought back many memories for me。 The Michigan setting was great - I could smell the pines! This story was the perfect summer book to read。 If I had experienced summer camp, had a group of best friends, I would have related more to the four Clover Girls。 None of the girls found a spot in my heart。 The writing was smooth as butter, and the back story of the camp, the state of Michigan (I hope I got the state correct), and music from the 1980s was phenomenal。

I have been a fan of every Viola Shipman (pen name of Wade Rouse) novel and enjoy their look at the meaning of relationships and their impact on our lives (family, friends, spouse, neighbors, etc。)。 His characters are multi-faceted, sometimes with hurts and insecurities they need to overcome to be the best person they can be。 I liked the story of the friendship of four girls through several summers of summer camp back in the 1980s。 It explores where life took each of them after those "camp" year I have been a fan of every Viola Shipman (pen name of Wade Rouse) novel and enjoy their look at the meaning of relationships and their impact on our lives (family, friends, spouse, neighbors, etc。)。 His characters are multi-faceted, sometimes with hurts and insecurities they need to overcome to be the best person they can be。 I liked the story of the friendship of four girls through several summers of summer camp back in the 1980s。 It explores where life took each of them after those "camp" years and whether there is a possibility they can reconnect and come together more than 30 years later。 It is poignant and looks at love, loss, betrayal, and the power of forgiveness and redemption。 The main complaint I have about this book is that the author turns one of the characters into a political stereotype that is over-the-top and cartoonish。 He has never been political in a previous novel, and I prefer, especially in the midst of a polarized political climate, to avoid having a negative view of conservatives as Ann Coulter incarnate included in a summer read。 The conservative male politician represents someone from another era when he talks about keeping women in their place in the home and is not believable。 The point is made that it is only by freeing oneself from any conservative ideology that we can become a woman who can be respected by other women。 I found that one facet of the book a major turnoff for me, especially since the characters don't accurately represent modern American conservatives and seems unnecessary to the plot of the book。 Frankly, I was surprised by the political cheapshot which I wasn't expecting。 Please stay away from political stereotypes and politics in your next book。 I read them to escape! 。。。more

What a great story of childhood friends meeting again as adults。 Jealousy, betrayal, and hurt feelings all enter into the picture。 Elizabeth, Veronica, Rachel and Emily met at Camp Birchwood as girls in 1985, where over four summers they were the Clover Girls—inseparable for those magical few weeks of freedom—until the last summer 。 Now Emily has summoned them all back with a proposition。 Stay a week and she gives them the camp。 If they don’t the state gets the land。 I loved the 4 girls and how What a great story of childhood friends meeting again as adults。 Jealousy, betrayal, and hurt feelings all enter into the picture。 Elizabeth, Veronica, Rachel and Emily met at Camp Birchwood as girls in 1985, where over four summers they were the Clover Girls—inseparable for those magical few weeks of freedom—until the last summer 。 Now Emily has summoned them all back with a proposition。 Stay a week and she gives them the camp。 If they don’t the state gets the land。 I loved the 4 girls and how some stayed in touch 。。it amazes me that a male writer can develop this story so well。 I received a copy of this arc in exchange for a fair and honest review。 。。。more
