Summary

Seven days to fall in love, fifteen years to forget and seven days to get it all back again。。。 From the author of The Perfect Find, this is a witty, romantic, and sexy-as-hell new novel of two writers and their second chance at love

Brooklynite Eva Mercy is a single mom and bestselling erotica writer, who is feeling pressed from all sides。 Shane Hall is a reclusive, enigmatic, award-winning literary author who, to everyone's surprise, shows up in New York。

When Shane and Eva meet unexpectedly at a literary event, sparks fly, raising not only their past buried traumas, but the eyebrows of New York's Black literati。 What no one knows is that twenty years earlier, teenage Eva and Shane spent one crazy, torrid week madly in love。 They may be pretending that everything is fine now, but they can't deny their chemistry-or the fact that they've been secretly writing to each other in their books ever since。

Over the next seven days in the middle of a steamy Brooklyn summer, Eva and Shane reconnect, but Eva's not sure how she can trust the man who broke her heart, and she needs to get him out of New York so that her life can return to normal。 But before Shane disappears again, there are a few questions she needs answered。 。 。

With its keen observations of Black life and the condition of modern motherhood, as well as the consequences of motherless-ness, Seven Days in June is by turns humorous, warm and deeply sensual。

I loved the writing style of the author。 This should be a cheesy romance but she turned it into something sophisticate and with substance。This book celebrated all the black authors in the book communities。 It alternated between Shane and Eva's POV。 It was swoon worthy but at the same time it touched many topics such as single mom, drugs and tween problems。 I loved the writing style of the author。 This should be a cheesy romance but she turned it into something sophisticate and with substance。This book celebrated all the black authors in the book communities。 It alternated between Shane and Eva's POV。 It was swoon worthy but at the same time it touched many topics such as single mom, drugs and tween problems。 。。。more

Flat characters with vapid thoughts who are made to seem deeper by inserting the trope (read: trigger) of having experienced self-harm in the past。 The best part of the story are the early chapters, where the author incorporates some funny social commentary and pop references。 Though the author manages to bring humor to her story, it’s not particularly insightful and feels misplaced with these characters。 After its initial chapters, the novel devolves from a love story into an unresearched mess Flat characters with vapid thoughts who are made to seem deeper by inserting the trope (read: trigger) of having experienced self-harm in the past。 The best part of the story are the early chapters, where the author incorporates some funny social commentary and pop references。 Though the author manages to bring humor to her story, it’s not particularly insightful and feels misplaced with these characters。 After its initial chapters, the novel devolves from a love story into an unresearched mess of political commentary。 Eva’s 12-year-old daughter is supposed to be wise beyond her years, but it’s patently unbelievable。 Even worse is the fact that the author injects her own misunderstandings of current affairs through this preteen。 It made my stomach turn。 This novel is branded as a love story, but it’s all just a guise for this author to voice her opinions in social politics。 。。。more

It's definitely me, not you。 I am extremely disappointed and sad to say this, but this was just okay for me。 I'm going to be in the minority opinion, (which I'm fine with), but I prefer to be honest in case there is someone out there who felt the way I did - also, honesty is always the best policy for me in a review。 I liked the book and my view is that while a '3 star' book review isn't the best (or the worst), I don't believe a '2 star' rating is warranted and I also don't want to negatively i It's definitely me, not you。 I am extremely disappointed and sad to say this, but this was just okay for me。 I'm going to be in the minority opinion, (which I'm fine with), but I prefer to be honest in case there is someone out there who felt the way I did - also, honesty is always the best policy for me in a review。 I liked the book and my view is that while a '3 star' book review isn't the best (or the worst), I don't believe a '2 star' rating is warranted and I also don't want to negatively impact the author or her efforts。 I thought the premise was really great and I was really enjoying the book until about halfway。 I think my first problem is that the days Shane and Eva fall in love are when they are 18。 Anyone who knows me or has been following my reviews for a while knows that I really struggle putting myself back in the high school box。 I even admitted to a friend last night that I am starting to struggle putting myself back in the college/post college box。 (I'm 39 for reference。) That's definitely a 'me' problem and while I don't think the writing for the falling in love portion was bad by any means, (it was quite well done in fact) - it just couldn't win over my old lady self。 (Again, it's me, not the book。)My second issue was that I felt this was very formulaic (but at the same time - aren't all romances?) You get the meet up, the falling in love, the inevitable event that causes a problem, the questioning of the relationship and then the split up or (more than likely) the reunion and close of the book。 So yeah, romances for the most part follow a certain sequence。 So again, this is a me problem, not this particular book problem。 With that all being said, what I really did like was that it was how Eva had a non-visible disability that was definitely a fresh perspective to read about (and I feel horrible for anyone who suffers from a similar fate)。 I really liked all the characters and I liked how they were both authors that used this week of their life as inspiration for their books。 Unfortunately, I just couldn't overcome my personal hangups。 Again, books are all relative and what is someone's '5 star' book is my '3 star'。 I would absolutely not rule out reading the author's next book and I hope I don't discourage you from picking this one up。 So for anyone who has read this, do you see where I'm coming from? Did you feel similarly and could look past it or am I really out here on my own? Thanks so much to Grand Central Publishing and Goodreads for the giveaway win in exchange for an honest review。Review Date: 06/05/2021Publication Date: 06/01/2021 。。。more

the dialogue crackles and there is some great chemistry between these characters。 my main issues with it are that the pacing is all over the place, the structure is a little confusing, and the epilogue should have probably been a couple of additional chapters。 still, an entertaining way to spend a few hours。

DNF @ 13%。 I’d read some great reviews for this and was really excited for it, but it seemed every few pages there was something new that had me asking what the author meant by that or if it was meant to be sarcastic。- “She was so much more than her silly, raunchy romance。”- “Audre had a Black mom and a Black father, as opposed to her dad being Jewish or Vietnamese。 Or a woman。”- Some commentary on the “ultra-progressive liberal” school system that also seemed to be making fun of teenagers in sp DNF @ 13%。 I’d read some great reviews for this and was really excited for it, but it seemed every few pages there was something new that had me asking what the author meant by that or if it was meant to be sarcastic。- “She was so much more than her silly, raunchy romance。”- “Audre had a Black mom and a Black father, as opposed to her dad being Jewish or Vietnamese。 Or a woman。”- Some commentary on the “ultra-progressive liberal” school system that also seemed to be making fun of teenagers in spots:“The upside? A top-notch liberal education。 The downside? Kids who struggled to divide decimals or name a state capital。”- “You’re nervous about sharing a stage with Belinda? The daughter of a hairdresser?”- Referring to sex workers as “hookers”- Was this a dig at Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie? Because I wasn’t sure if he was serious: “In 2013 the National Book Critics Circle gave Best Fiction to Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie instead of me。 Do I think she’s a superior writer? Nah。 But it’s all subjective。”- A teacher (our hero) referring to women/girls in a misogynistic way: “In most schools, eighth-grade boys aren’t terrorized this way。 They’re allowed to be kids, nothing on their minds but pussy and Roblox。”That’s as far as I got。 。。。more

This was such a funny, smart, heavy, and sexy book centered around a Black love story! I loved so much in this book! It’s probably closer to a 4。5 rating。 Eva Mercy is a Black erotica author who has a debilitating “invisible disability”。 She is a single mother who is trying to do what’s best for herself and her daughter but ends up coasting through life rather than fully living。 Shane Hall is an acclaimed Black author who has a dark and mysterious path and hates the limelight。 These two characte This was such a funny, smart, heavy, and sexy book centered around a Black love story! I think the author did a great job with the tropes of a second chance romance and the one that got away。 Both characters were really unique and funny in their own ways。 They also both had a lot of baggage and emotional trauma from their past that they had to work through to be in a healthy relationship。 I loved Eva’s passion and humour。 She was such a great character to read from as she was strong and vulnerable in so many ways。 I don’t know a lot about the disability that she had in this book, but I thought it was written about in a really nuanced and sensitive way that made it real and heart-breaking but also showed Eva’s strength in how she dealt with it in her daily life。 Eva also has a dark past from her childhood and upbringing。 I loved the flashbacks that showed more of who she was as a person and what made her into the person she was today。 Shane was a great character as well。 He seemed pretty light hearted when we first are introduced to him but we slowly see that he is a lot more layered and complex。 He has a lot of emotional trauma that holds him back from loving and believing in himself and also allowing him to fully be invested in his relationships。 I liked how we saw his journey dealing with his trauma and coming to terms with it。 I also loved the side characters, especially Cece and Audre! They were great at bringing the lightness and humour to the story and helped push the main characters together! I loved Audre and Eva’s dynamic and relationship so much!I went into this story expecting a fun and sexy read and it was that but so much more。 This story dealt with a lot of heavier topics such as drug abuse and addiction, suicide and self-harm as well as others。 Although I don’t think everything was always written in a perfect way I did think the author did a good job of dealing with these sensitive topics。 I can see how the relationship and some of the characters choices may come off as toxic and unhealthy but I think that was a part of the story to show the humanity and vulnerability of these characters。 。。。more

As sheer escapism, this was wonderful。 I loved the characters and the background, in fact everything about it。 The very beginning had me worried that I was reading some fantasy novel (which is not my style) but that was just Eva, as an erotic fantasy author, meeting her fans。 Set in the world of fiction writing in the USA this was honestly a delight。 Plenty of laughs, but also poignancy, erotic scenes, troubled teens, grief and heartbreak - it played on the heartstrings from start to finish。 Eva As sheer escapism, this was wonderful。 I loved the characters and the background, in fact everything about it。 The very beginning had me worried that I was reading some fantasy novel (which is not my style) but that was just Eva, as an erotic fantasy author, meeting her fans。 Set in the world of fiction writing in the USA this was honestly a delight。 Plenty of laughs, but also poignancy, erotic scenes, troubled teens, grief and heartbreak - it played on the heartstrings from start to finish。 Eva's daughter, Audre, was a great character, I loved her interactions。 The relationships, Eva and Shane, Eva and Audre, Eve/Audre with Cece, friendships among authors were all portrayed as multi dimensional relationships。 Backgrounds were vivid - from Genevieve's childhood rooms, the room she spent time in with teenage Shane to the heat and humidity of the south - an absolute delight。 #netgalley #sevendaysinjune 。。。more

The writing was engaging and had us move seamlessly between narrators and timelines。 The characters were (for the most part) lovable and I was rooting for Eva and Shane the whole time。Eva and Shane had a rough past which crossed paths when they were teenagers for seven days in June。 Fast forward 15 years and they are both writers who made names for themselves in the Black Literati。 Somehow, they never crossed paths until now。 They still have feelings for each other but there is some animosity from Eva because she believes he abandoned her all those years ago when she thought they were going to be together forever。 Shane finally sought her out and is trying to prove he never wanted to leave her。 This quote from their first reunion had me dying!!“One thing,” she whispered, her lips by his jaw。 She didn’t want anyone to overhear。 “Before I forget。”“What’s that?”“Stop writing about me。”[…] In a voice both raspy and low, and so, so familiar, Shane said, “You first。”Now they are spending another seven days together in June healing their relationship。 During this time, Shane is helping at-risk kids and Eva is trying to get a movie deal that ideally doesn’t white-wash her characters。 We also see the contrasting relationships Eva has with her mother and daughter。 I absolutely loved watching Eva do everything in her power to break the cycle of neglect from generations before her。As much as I loved most of the novel, I did have some issues。 While I understand some of the liberties taken in Audre, the daughter, I felt she didn’t come across as a believable tween。 However, I am not a mother and I can never know what it is like to be a tween in this day and age。 Most aspects make sense given the way society is today, but it felt a bit much。 I also absolutely hate the miscommunication trope and it is very present in this novel。 By the time those instances came up, I was already invested and let it slide。 This could have been 4。5-5 stars if it wasn’t present, but it was and it lessened my enjoyment。 If you don’t mind that trope, then you can see this as a 4。5 star rating! My rating was 3。5 but on goodreads, I rounded up to 4 stars。If you love hard hitting romances that celebrate black people, definitely pick this up! Just be warned, there are lots of triggers, so please refer to the list of them I provided above。Thank you to Quercus Books for the arc! This title was released June 2, 2021。 。。。more

Tia Williams offers a much darker alternative to that romantic scenario but one that is equally beautiful and moving in places; a complicated, raw, intense, messy, chaotic, passionate and painful love story involving two very damaged individuals, Shane Hall and Eva Mercy who first meet as teenagers and then again fifteen years later。 Both are bestselling authors。 Following their intense and impassioned week of romance with whispered promises that are destined to be broken, Genevieve Mercier reinvents herself age 19 as Eva Mercy, author of erotic fiction series Cursed featuring witches and vampires。 A single mum to the “tween tornado” that is daughter Audre, Eva juggles her writing career alongside motherhood and a debilitating illness。 With the deadline for book number fifteen fast approaching Eva’s heart no longer seems invested in her lead characters futures; the book she feels most compelled to write concerns her heritage。 Acting as a last minute stand in on a book panel at a literary event she unexpectedly comes face to face with her first love and fellow author Shane Hall and all her hard work to obliterate her painful past rapidly dissolves。 The reappearance of this reclusive figure automatically piques the curiosity of fans and those within the literary world, realisation dawning that this pair have been secretly conversing with each other through their fictional characters for years。 A case of art imitating life? Having written his own novels whilst under the influence of alcohol Shane is now two years sober and looking to build bridges and make amends for his past behaviour but can Eva forgive and forget and if so how can they keep news of their long ago seven day affair under wraps? Theirs is a history heavily influenced by drug and alcohol addiction, an invisible disease (debilitating migraines), child neglect and a tragic accident。 As if these aren’t enough hurdles to hinder the healthy development of a long term loving relationship, Eva’s female role models are women for whom love has never run smoothly, their spirits crushed by their Creole menfolk; Lizette, Clotilde and Delphine unable to break the cycle that doesn’t acknowledge their eccentricities/mental illness declaring them possessed by the devil instead。 Reuniting after years of silence the chemistry between Shane and Eva is undeniable; it is scorching and sizzling hot but with so much accumulated baggage, hurt, disappointment and broken promises weighing them down is it even wise to revisit the past and risk getting burned second time around? Can Eva and Shane together break the curse that besets generations of these women and find their own happy ever after?First loves can be impossible to forget but most of us consign those memories to the past and move forward。 Despite their best efforts these two have been unable to let go, the embers of their love still burning, issues left unresolved, their story not quite finished。 So it’s with the reappearance of Shane that this novel really comes alive and I felt more able to engage with these characters and the details of this couple’s lives past and present。 With scenes ranging from those choked with lust and desire, to those of a bleak, heartbreaking and harrowing nature to those that are more hopeful, this isn’t the most uplifting of reads! An undercurrent of guilt runs through the narrative, contributing to the overall sombre mood but this is tempered in places by humour thanks to the presence of twelve year old Audre who is smart, sassy and a chip off the old block。 Without a doubt my favourite character, she definitely diffuses some of the tension as does the fierce, at times conniving but loyal friend/editor Cece。 A true “glamazon”! Although I liked Audre immensely I thought her voice didn’t sound like that of a girl her age。 Are twelve year olds this grown up nowadays or is she simply precocious? Aside from the romance element this is a novel about the events and the people who define and shape us into the individuals we are today。 Fraught with complications then and now this is a love story firmly rooted in gritty, seedy reality, with no glossing over the harshness of childhoods that are far from idyllic。 Understandably there’s a focus on the mother/daughter dynamic with Eva desperate to give Audre the childhood she herself didn’t get to enjoy, embracing her version of motherhood that differs vastly from Lizette’s。If I’m honest I didn’t find this an easy read, especially early on in the narrative, with so many cultural references that meant nothing to me floating right over the top of my head。 Unable then to fully appreciate every word of this risen from the ashes love story my overall enjoyment was somewhat marred。 There were a few occasions when I almost gave up。 However I’m glad I persevered because underneath all the darkness lies a love story that is deeply affecting。 Reading slight outside my comfort zone I don’t feel best placed to discuss certain aspects of this novel, namely that of race and ethnicity and the story Eva wishes to tell regarding her ancestors but nonetheless I would recommend giving this one a try。 In terms of a love story alone it’s worth your time and effort, if you’re up for the challenge! My thanks as always to the publisher and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity to read in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

Ok, this swoony romance was SO FUN。 The hook drew me in at first: two Black authors who had a whirlwind romance in high school have been sending each other message through their books for almost 20 years before reuniting as adults at a literary event。 Doesn't that sound fantastic? And it was! I didn't know what else to expect with this book, but it's so modern and cute and heart-wrenching。 We have Eva, a single mother living in Brooklyn who has made a name for herself as a writer of Black vampir Ok, this swoony romance was SO FUN。 The hook drew me in at first: two Black authors who had a whirlwind romance in high school have been sending each other message through their books for almost 20 years before reuniting as adults at a literary event。 Doesn't that sound fantastic? And it was! I didn't know what else to expect with this book, but it's so modern and cute and heart-wrenching。 We have Eva, a single mother living in Brooklyn who has made a name for herself as a writer of Black vampires in a Twlight-esque saga spanning 14 books。 Shane is a literary superstar, a reclusive recovering alcoholic who rarely makes public appearances。 As you can imagine, this book is full of juicy literary gossip and name-drops, and an insider look at the publishing world through a Black lens。 It was fascinating, and I fell in love with these troubled characters who find their way back to each other after years apart。 It was also interesting to have the main character suffer from chronic pain and debilitating migraines, and I think the author did a good job depicting what living with that is like, and how it affects her daughter and her love life。 There are certainly hard moments in this light book as well, especially when we flash back to Eva and Shane's high school years as they were both drug addicts at such a young age。 But it still seems true to life, and understandable when you see where life takes them and what brings them back together。 I have to recommend this book for anyone, especially if the synopsis intrigues you and you're looking for a romance that isn't too fluffy! This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 CW: self harm, addiction, fractured family relationships。 I received a copy of this novel from NetGalley and I am so thankful because this was such a wonderful read。 I fell in love with THE PERFECT FIND in chapter 1 and have been looking forward to Tia's next novel ever since。 Seven Days was well worth the wait。 Tia is LOL funny- witty without being zany and so thoughtfully, insightfully deep without feeling like the book is full of faux wokeness。 So many times, i avoid books about writers becau CW: self harm, addiction, fractured family relationships。 I received a copy of this novel from NetGalley and I am so thankful because this was such a wonderful read。 I fell in love with THE PERFECT FIND in chapter 1 and have been looking forward to Tia's next novel ever since。 Seven Days was well worth the wait。 Tia is LOL funny- witty without being zany and so thoughtfully, insightfully deep without feeling like the book is full of faux wokeness。 So many times, i avoid books about writers because they're incredibly cliche。 It's like writing an attorney by watching Law & Order (my goodness, WHO would EVEN??? Not me, haha *looks away), but this book about lovers who work out their angst about their young troubled love between the pages of best selling novels and series? *fans self* It's。。。 Words, I don't have them。 GET THIS BOOK AND PUT IT IN YOUR FACE。 Also I am extremely interested in seeing the Perfect Find on the big screen (in my bedroom)。 CANNOT WAIT。 。。。more

before actually reading seven days in june i looked through some reviews of it, just to know what exactly i should expect from this book (i’m not a big fan of surprises)。 thanks to them, i knew that this was not going to be a romantic comedy as i believed it to be at first。 still, even with some knowledge about what to expect from this story, i was not prepared to be completely riveted by it。reading this book was a very emotional experience; heartbreaking and heart-warming at the same time。 the before actually reading seven days in june i looked through some reviews of it, just to know what exactly i should expect from this book (i’m not a big fan of surprises)。 thanks to them, i knew that this was not going to be a romantic comedy as i believed it to be at first。 still, even with some knowledge about what to expect from this story, i was not prepared to be completely riveted by it。reading this book was a very emotional experience; heartbreaking and heart-warming at the same time。 the story of eva and shane was moving, very complicated, sad and yet hopeful。 i felt truly devasted at times, reading about their childhood, about everything that they’ve been through; and then, after the story was coming back to the present times, all i could do was admire those two incredibly strong characters, whose lives were anything but easy, but they didn’t give up。 this book also raises a lot of serious, important subjects, such as mental-health problems, chronic pain, alcoholism, drug abuse, suicidal thoughts, hurting yourself and many others。 the romance itself was amazing as well。 very well-written relationship, which the reader could see and feel developing through the story。 the chemistry between eva and shane, their connection were absolutely terrific。 it’s really hard to desribe all the things they made me feel。 they were both fanstatic, interesting and complex characters, who i loved and admired as individuals, and completely fell in love with as a couple。 they cared, understoodnd and supported each other fully and i can only wish that someday i will have a relationship similar to theirs, filled with so much love and adoration。i also really liked how this book spoke about many issues black community has to deal with; white-washing of the characters, for example。 sadly, it is something still very common these days and i appreciated having a chance to know a little more about how complicated it may be from the perspective of a black author。overall, this book was truly remarkable, definitely one of those i am going to remember for a long time and probably come back to one day。 - i received a complimentary copy of this book from quercus books。 opinions expressed in this review are completely my own。 。。。more
