Summary

*Running Time 7 hrs。 and 48 mins。*

Number-one 'New York Times' best-selling author of 'Everything, Everything' and 'The Sun is Also a Star' Nicola Yoon is back with her eagerly anticipated third novel。 With all the heart and hope of her last two books, this is an utterly unique romance。

Evie Thomas doesn't believe in love anymore。 Especially after the strangest thing occurs one otherwise ordinary afternoon: She witnesses a couple kiss and is overcome with a vision of how their romance began 。 。 。 and how it will end。 After all, even the greatest love stories end with a broken heart, eventually。

As Evie tries to understand why this is happening, she finds herself at La Brea Dance studio, learning to waltz, fox-trot, and tango with a boy named X。 X is everything that Evie is not: adventurous, passionate, daring。 His philosophy is to say yes to everything - including entering a ballroom dance competition with a girl he's only just met。

Falling for X is definitely not what Evie had in mind。 If her visions of heartbreak have taught her anything, it's that no one escapes love unscathed。 But as she and X dance around and toward each other, Evie is forced to question all she thought she knew about life and love。 In the end, is love worth the risk?

The chapters varied from written paragraphs to lists and text messages which really gave you a feel of Evie’s personality, I personally loved the lists, they were usually quite funny and sarcastic。 I was definitely expecting a light and fluffy novel, but instead, Nicola Yoon has crafted an emotional and personal read。 Instructions for Dancing is a fantastic book about taking a chance on love。 。。。more

I have read and enjoyed Nicola Yoon's two prior books and have been on the lookout for a new release from her for a couple of years。 I was so excited when I saw Instructions for Dancing and even more excited when I got approved to review it。 Unfortunately, I've decided to DNF Instructions for Dancing at 20%。Even though the visions Evie has were mentioned in the description, I wasn't expecting this to be so prominent。 I don't usually enjoy books that have a fantasy element in an otherwise normal I have read and enjoyed Nicola Yoon's two prior books and have been on the lookout for a new release from her for a couple of years。 I was so excited when I saw Instructions for Dancing and even more excited when I got approved to review it。 Unfortunately, I've decided to DNF Instructions for Dancing at 20%。Even though the visions Evie has were mentioned in the description, I wasn't expecting this to be so prominent。 I don't usually enjoy books that have a fantasy element in an otherwise normal setting。 There were a few other issues for me revolving around some PC issues that I don't enjoy reading about。 I like reading to draw me away from the troubles of the day to day。 Reading for me is a distraction from real life。 I am sure plenty of other readers will connect to Instructions for Dancing。 。。。more

Sweet book。 It’s hard to know what to tell people without a spoiler, but just know that’s it’s both happy and sad。 I also feel in this particular case that I enjoyed reading the physical book more than I enjoyed the narration on Audible (I accidentally purchased both without checking - started on Audible but then completed the book)

I've wondered the same thing myself, so this book was an emotional rollercoaster for me。 At one point I thought "Oh, wow。 Maybe this will actually be a Nicola Yoon story that has a happy ending。" But then once I did reach the end, I realized that while it wasn't what I thought it was going to be, maybe it was just as beautiful and fulfilling。 We focus so much on forever, that we lose sight of the now。 This book is sparkling and gentle and sad, and it's beautifully written。 Here's how I rated various elements:Characters: 10/10Emotion: 10/10Writing Style: 9/10Pacing: 8/10Immersion: 8/10Overall Enjoyment: 9/10 。。。more

Thanks to Delacourt, Random House, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of Instructions for Dancing! What a charming book。 Despite dealing with some heavy YA themes (divorce, cheating, death), this book manages to feel light and fun and full of hope at the end。 I loved how the author wove actual dancing into a book (its so hard to describe!), making you feel like you were there for the lessons and all of the choreography。I loved X and Evie together, how they pushed each other to open up and do new Thanks to Delacourt, Random House, and NetGalley for an advanced copy of Instructions for Dancing! What a charming book。 Despite dealing with some heavy YA themes (divorce, cheating, death), this book manages to feel light and fun and full of hope at the end。 I loved how the author wove actual dancing into a book (its so hard to describe!), making you feel like you were there for the lessons and all of the choreography。I loved X and Evie together, how they pushed each other to open up and do new things。 I also loved Evie's friendships and how they all worked together as a group。 It felt natural and not contrived。I know that the curse at the heart of the book is about Evie learning a lesson about love but at times it felt like it was just dropped in as a way to get her to the dance studio and I almost wish there had been a different plot device to get her there since it started to feel a bit contrived。 Evie never tries to figure out how to stop the future from happening? Why is she so passive? I found those chapters a bit frustrating。Overall though, what an adorable book。 I can't wait to read more from Yoon。 。。。more

“Love is the question and the answer and the reason to ask in the first place。 It’s everything。 All of it。”4 stars。 This was such a great story and I got a lot more out of it than I thought I would。 Highly enjoyed it。 It’s fast paced, a unique plot, great characters, and Yoon’s writing has improved a lot since her first two books。Evie is now a cynical teenager who thinks love is BS after seeing her father cheating on her mother。 She had her moments of self centered and annoying ways but for “Love is the question and the answer and the reason to ask in the first place。 It’s everything。 All of it。”4 stars。 This was such a great story and I got a lot more out of it than I thought I would。 Highly enjoyed it。 It’s fast paced, a unique plot, great characters, and Yoon’s writing has improved a lot since her first two books。Evie is now a cynical teenager who thinks love is BS after seeing her father cheating on her mother。 She had her moments of self centered and annoying ways but for the most I really enjoyed her。 Her growth and development was really well done and felt real。 She had a great group of friends that I enjoyed and her relationship with X was so stinking cute even if it did move hella fast。 They were just too adorable together as dance partners, as friends, and then as a couple。 I enjoyed their banter and just how X as a character was such a sweet cinnamon roll。 They made my teeth ache with their cuteness。The family dynamic was wonderful and it was my favorite thing about this book。 I say it all of the time but family drama can really make a book for me if done well and it was done really well here。 I liked Evie’s family a lot。 I loved seeing Evie come to an understanding with her father and thought they shared some really heartfelt moments。The magic aspect was great as well and I liked that it wasn’t overused but some more explanation of it would’ve been great。 That ending, though。 Ouch。 It’s so bittersweet and it’s the what comes after that makes me so sad。 I wasn’t expecting that at all and my feelings are hurt。 Overall, this was a wonderful read and it left me smiling a lot but I’mma need an apology for that ending Mrs。 Yoon! I’m stressed! 😩 。。。more

I'm rating this three and a half to four stars。This isn't a typical romance story。 In fact, it's more about how Evie doesn't really believe in love anymore after seeing her parents divorce。 The romance novels she ones found comfort feel wrong to read and when she suddenly has visions of seeing how couples relationship begin and end when they kiss, it only reinstates that love is doomed。 The story has a lot of tropes and formula's found in the romance genre, but takes a fresh take on it。Nicola Yo I'm rating this three and a half to four stars。This isn't a typical romance story。 In fact, it's more about how Evie doesn't really believe in love anymore after seeing her parents divorce。 The romance novels she ones found comfort feel wrong to read and when she suddenly has visions of seeing how couples relationship begin and end when they kiss, it only reinstates that love is doomed。 The story has a lot of tropes and formula's found in the romance genre, but takes a fresh take on it。Nicola Yoon stated she wrote this story during a period of heartbreak and it was sure felt throughout the book (using writing is a great tool to help cope with trauma, depression, and more)。 Evie's pessimism and X's outlook on life were such a great match that follows typical romance tropes, but it only plays a small part in the story。 It's her journey accepting that love can be short and painful, yet it can also contain so much joy regardless of the length。There were a few things I think could have made the Instructions for Dancing a five star review for me。 The plot was rushed throughout and the dancing scenes could have been longer, but the story favored focusing on the build up of Evie and X's relationship。 Even though I would have liked to have gotten to know Evie's friends and explored her visions, I get what Yoon's overall goal was and it wasn't for Evie to be the heroine who saves these relationships。 Even with all these, the plot was engaging and I could easily see this becoming a movie。 。。。more

Through all of this, she must learn to forgive people and live with the fact that things end because that's life - for good or bad。 Evie's journey includes forgiveness that we all make mistakes, we all hurt each other, and the only way through it was love。 This book was excellent。 It's basically, "Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved again," in a book form for YA。 This is also an excellent book for someone whose family has gone through a divorce and doesn't know how to forgive。 Evie feels betrayed by her father, and eventually, she finds out the real reason they got divorced。 My favorite quote in the book was, "The problem with broken hearts isn't that they kill you。 It's that they don't。"https://zibbyowens。com/transcript/nic。。。 。。。more

I received and ARC of this book thanks to NetGalley。 This one was very different than any of Yoon's other books, at least in my opinion。 I thought the concept was really interesting and enjoyed the characters probably more than her other books。 I felt like the whole thing was a little surface level though。 There wasn't a depth and explanation like I expected from Yoon。 There was a rushed quality to it that just made it kind of a let down。 3。5 stars rounded up。 I received and ARC of this book thanks to NetGalley。 This one was very different than any of Yoon's other books, at least in my opinion。 I thought the concept was really interesting and enjoyed the characters probably more than her other books。 I felt like the whole thing was a little surface level though。 There wasn't a depth and explanation like I expected from Yoon。 There was a rushed quality to it that just made it kind of a let down。 3。5 stars rounded up。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Ahhh, how do I figure out what to say about this book? It's not strictly a rom-com, and I wished that Nicola would have leaned more into the bitter parts of this bittersweet story。 I could feel that she was holding back a lot of pain and sadness, and I do wished that she would have leaned into it。I also kind of wish that this wasn't young adult? It read like characters who were in their early twenties, but since there isn't an age category for that, it gets pushed on all the 18-year-olds。 (Like h Ahhh, how do I figure out what to say about this book? It's not strictly a rom-com, and I wished that Nicola would have leaned more into the bitter parts of this bittersweet story。 I could feel that she was holding back a lot of pain and sadness, and I do wished that she would have leaned into it。I also kind of wish that this wasn't young adult? And how do these kids never have to go to school??? I know it's second semester senior year, but still。 That just sounded like an easily plausible way to explain that flawed bit of world-building。 Couldn't they have at least been on summer break? Why weren't any of them worried about what freshman year of college would be like?)I also wished that some of the themes she'd brought up in the beginning was more part of the story like the commentary on the romance genre。 I sometimes felt like it was a bit over-stuffed, and because of that, there wasn't enough room to give everything the focus it needed。 Like the magical realism bit was really cool, but it dropped out very noticeably in the middle。 The ballroom dancing, too。 And I guess I wished that even X and Evie's relationship could be more developed。 But what was especially lacking was the storyline with Evie and her father。 It felt like things happened because they needed to, not because of any character growth Evie went through。I guess what I'm saying is that I wished this was longer? Of course they win the competition but Evie sees how their romance ends and she believes she cannot bear it。 The story is more about taking chances on love, and enjoying all the good parts, because it's not the ending that matters it's the loving。 Nicely done - will appeal to romance lovers, especially those who like theirs with some tears。 。。。more
