So funny！ However it skews very adult to me。 Not sure it’s a good idea for kids to be reading something where people are called idiots？ As an adult I found the entire story really hilarious。

A very fun and punny adventure all about finding yourself and learning what you’re capable of。 Definitely silly and filled with delightful jokes but also has a lot of heart。 Reminded me of a longform newspaper strip （although that might’ve been the lettering）。 Worth checking out！

1st Line: "Even a long， long time ago， vampire hunting was a Helsing family obsession 。。。 "Prose （Story）: Ham Helsing， a painter and writer of poetry whose refined ways belie the centuries of vampire and monster hunting heritage behind him， is forced to take over the family business when his roguish hunter brother Chad is killed， leaving him the last of his line。 Determined to do his family proud， Ham sets off to a small village on his first mission， little realizing both the dangers and dorks a 1st Line: "Even a long， long time ago， vampire hunting was a Helsing family obsession 。。。 "Prose （Story）: Ham Helsing， a painter and writer of poetry whose refined ways belie the centuries of vampire and monster hunting heritage behind him， is forced to take over the family business when his roguish hunter brother Chad is killed， leaving him the last of his line。 Determined to do his family proud， Ham sets off to a small village on his first mission， little realizing both the dangers and dorks awaiting him。 Don's （Review）: After a brief introduction， in which we are introduced to the short and happy lives of some of Ham and Chad's monster-hunting ancestors， it becomes clear right away that the Helsings mean well， but that these pigs are not exactly the brightest crayons in the box。 Ham， soft-spoken and kind （though he steps up to any challenge when riled）， arrives for his first kill seeking the castle of the vampire on the hill， and right away builds hiimself a team via a female ninja tree-pig， a pair of greedy （and snarky） rats， and a small boy who happens to turn into a big snarling 。。。 well， wolf technically， but he's more like a big， sloppy， doofy dog， whenever the moon comes out。 But with a diabolical hench-hen， an army of spiderlings， and townspeople who don't believe Ham could fight his way out of an argument going against him， it will take all this courageous pig's will to complete his mission - and the laughs along the way make this book a joy。 Author Moyer sets up a Looney Tunes-style premise and look to this brilliant graphic novel from the start， but then tempers that humor to a more sarcastic， mature （and funnier） feel， in between the physical comedy， that really makes you care about Ham， Ronin （the aforementioned piglet ninja）， Lobos （the wolf-dog）; all the characters really。 Better still， amidst a book that's funny to read and an animated series on paper to look at （seriously love the art）， Ham Helsing also has some nice messages about how both life and people can fool you - in the best way - and that when you have friends you have it all （none of it ever coming across on the page as obvious or preachy）。 If you hate spiders， a couple scenes toward the end in particular may cause some glee， but this reader devoured Ham Helsing wearing a huge grin throughout - even more so thanks to a surprise twist， in the end， that leads to setting up what appears will be an even larger-scale sequel。 Absolutely loved this one， which can be enjoyed by kids of any age - even mine！ 4。5/5 starsNOTE: I received a free ARC of this title from NetGalley and the publisher， in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

E ARC provided by NetgalleyHam comes from a long line of vampire hunters who make rash decisions that end in their deaths。 After his brother Chad perishes in a wing suit accident， Ham is the only one left。 He heads to a town where there is a vampire savaging the residents， and intends to take care of matters。 The only problem？ He's not sure what to do。 With the help of two rats who hire him and Ronin， a wide eyed tree pig， and Lobos （a werewolf who by day is a young boy at a local camp）， they ta E ARC provided by NetgalleyHam comes from a long line of vampire hunters who make rash decisions that end in their deaths。 After his brother Chad perishes in a wing suit accident， Ham is the only one left。 He heads to a town where there is a vampire savaging the residents， and intends to take care of matters。 The only problem？ He's not sure what to do。 With the help of two rats who hire him and Ronin， a wide eyed tree pig， and Lobos （a werewolf who by day is a young boy at a local camp）， they take off for the spooky mansion at the edge of town where they meet Malcolm， a warthog（？） vampire who doesn't want to hurt people; he has social anxiety and just wants to keep to himself。 Something is hurting the townspeople， so Ham and his band of merry marauders set out to find the villain。 Through the twists and turns of their adventure， Ham learns the true meaning of both courage and friendship。Strengths: Many adults struggle with an appropriate level of middle grade goofy， but Moyers nails it。 First of all， a vampire hunting pig is just funny， and the other animals he encounters all work well with him。 Sneaky but ultimately helpful rats？ Check。 Inexplicable but helpful werewolf？ Check。 Kick-ham Ronin， whose ability to save the day and also fend off Malcolm's slightly creepy interest？ Check and double check！ I also loved that the vampire wasn't really the villain， and that Ham and company have to determine who that really is before the forces of evil are dispatched。 Perfect level of cartoon violence with a bit of philosophy thrown in to make discerning readers happy。 Make sure you take a look at this one before dismissing it。 I love when books surprise me。 Weaknesses: While Ham had fairly standard pig eyes， Ronin had manga style wide ones that made me think of Penelope Pussycat， or another character I couldn't quite pin down。 This is why I struggle with graphic novels-- I get stuck on one stylistic feature that distracts me。What I really think: As a connoisseur of middle grade literature involving radioactive pocket pets and farting， wisecracking animals of all types， I can tell you: middle school libraries need Ham Helsing。 Like Watson's fantastic Stick Dog， Ham can be enjoyed by elementary school students who like that they stomp spiders with wooden clogs， middle schoolers who take great glee in Ham's progenitors' ridiculous deaths， and teachers who appreciate Malcolm instructing Ham on what bravery really means。 This could have gone so， so wrong， but went very right instead。 。。。more

"Nobody is just evil for the sake of being evil。" A clever little story-- two rats （one of which reads a thesaurus to sound smarter-- a fun way to plug vocab building） are looking to make some treasure， so they convince a pig vampire slayer to let them tag along and collect when he slays the vamp who is vexing the town。 Ham Helsing comes from a long line of vampire hunters （who， according to the beginning of the novel， are not abundantly intelligent but do seem to be quite brave）， and though he "Nobody is just evil for the sake of being evil。" A clever little story-- two rats （one of which reads a thesaurus to sound smarter-- a fun way to plug vocab building） are looking to make some treasure， so they convince a pig vampire slayer to let them tag along and collect when he slays the vamp who is vexing the town。 Ham Helsing comes from a long line of vampire hunters （who， according to the beginning of the novel， are not abundantly intelligent but do seem to be quite brave）， and though he has always been the artistic one in the family， he must arrive and defeat Malcom the Vampire。 Along the way， the crew meets Ronin the Tree Pig， an adorable little rogue， and Lobo the Boy Werewolf。 There's a cast of "undead" played by pieces of bacon， a loyal HENch played by a chicken， and a nod to Frankenstein。 All in all， a very cute read。 Because of some of the suggested violence， I'd suggest middle grade readers。 。。。more

After an introduction where we see several previous porcine vampire hunters， all managing to kill themselves in the pursuit of their targets， we settle with the current， and last such， piggy。 What follows involves quite a mish-mash of different characters – the vampire himself is some kind of tusked boar， living with a hen but not getting on at all well with it; there are two rats who have inspired our pig to do the hunting just for the prestige and not at all for the fortune it would lead to; o After an introduction where we see several previous porcine vampire hunters， all managing to kill themselves in the pursuit of their targets， we settle with the current， and last such， piggy。 What follows involves quite a mish-mash of different characters – the vampire himself is some kind of tusked boar， living with a hen but not getting on at all well with it; there are two rats who have inspired our pig to do the hunting just for the prestige and not at all for the fortune it would lead to; oh and there's a timid young boy constantly led into danger as a result of also being a werewolf。 A lesser book would really suffer with such incongruous characters， that seem wacky for the sake of being wacky， and not wacky for the sake of a good story。 And while this is certainly no classic， this is still entertaining fare， well worth a loan – the story is as suitably non-straightforward as its dramatis personae would make you think， there are twists （and clog dances） that would find a valid place in the best genre works for any age range， and the book bravely has many more wordless panels than just about any comic for this audience， allowing the peculiar action scenes， unusual locations – and yes， oddball characters – space to breathe。 At times four stars seemed too generous， but it's about right in the finish， if nothing else for the promise this debut volume holds。 The bonus story at the end has more than enough in-jokes to prove I'm right in being hopeful for more。 。。。more
