Summary

A small book for anyone in search of hope, looking for a path to a more meaningful life, or in need of encouragement。

Happiness occurs when you forget who you're expected to be。 And what you're expected to do。 Happiness is an accident of self-acceptance。 It's the warm breeze you feel when you open the door to who you are。

Years ago, Matt Haig began writing notes to his future self。 These notes were meant as gifts to his future self: offerings of hope to help himself through anything from the darkest periods of his life to a not-so-great day。 As time went on, he added new thoughts and stories, and he turned them into The Comfort Book so that everyone could draw on this well of reassurance and encouragement。 Each of its short meditations gives a new perspective on life and all of its highs and lows--small islands of hope for anyone looking for a more fulfilling, more uplifting way through life。 Incorporating a diverse array of sources from across the world, history, science, and his own experiences, Haig offers warmth and reassurance, reminding us to slow down and appreciate the beauty and unpredictability of existence。

Matt Haig is my favorite author and always he exceeded my expectations。 Anyone who has ever felt alone or anxious needs to read this book。 His writing is similar to how many people think, in short bursts, lists, and random thoughts thrown in here and there。 The Comfort Book is just that, a comforting guide on how to survive the world of Covid, social distancing, and online everything。 Haig is vulnerable in a way I do not see from many authors and unlike many self help authors he does not have a Matt Haig is my favorite author and always he exceeded my expectations。 Anyone who has ever felt alone or anxious needs to read this book。 His writing is similar to how many people think, in short bursts, lists, and random thoughts thrown in here and there。 The Comfort Book is just that, a comforting guide on how to survive the world of Covid, social distancing, and online everything。 Haig is vulnerable in a way I do not see from many authors and unlike many self help authors he does not have a "prescription" of how to feel better。 He acts as a guide on how to handle and preserve through the worst of times。 He never sugar coats anything and reveals some of his worst panic attacks and anxieties, but also makes the reader laugh and feel safe at the same time。 。。。more

I'll acknowledge off the bat that I feel like books like this don't get published without their author already being famous/popular。Regardless, I really loved it and plan to buy a copy。 It's like a 2013 Thought Catalog article about pulling yourself out of a depression only raised to a bit of a higher level。 Love Matt Haig's perspective and his commitment to sharing his mental health struggles in ways that might help others。 Can't wait to underline a bunch of quotes when I buy a physical copy。Th I'll acknowledge off the bat that I feel like books like this don't get published without their author already being famous/popular。Regardless, I really loved it and plan to buy a copy。 It's like a 2013 Thought Catalog article about pulling yourself out of a depression only raised to a bit of a higher level。 Love Matt Haig's perspective and his commitment to sharing his mental health struggles in ways that might help others。 Can't wait to underline a bunch of quotes when I buy a physical copy。Thanks to Edelweiss and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for my honest review。 。。。more

Although very different in form, this work is very philosophically aligned with The Midnight Library。 I enjoyed the quick burst thoughts。 While a book such as this risks coming off as trite, I enjoyed Haig's soothing and thoughtful words。 Not amazing, but certainly quite good。Note: I was provided a free advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。Further note: The advanced reader copy I received was delivered to me digitally on a Kindle device。 The formatting of this copy Although very different in form, this work is very philosophically aligned with The Midnight Library。 I enjoyed the quick burst thoughts。 While a book such as this risks coming off as trite, I enjoyed Haig's soothing and thoughtful words。 Not amazing, but certainly quite good。Note: I was provided a free advanced reader copy of this book in exchange for an honest review。Further note: The advanced reader copy I received was delivered to me digitally on a Kindle device。 The formatting of this copy was absolutely atrocious, with many thoughts cut off mid-sentence or even mid-word。 While I always appreciate a free book, the formatting in this case severely impacted my ability to enjoy this work。 I tried not to let this influence my review too much, as I generally enjoyed the content of the work, and I can't imagine that the text as I reviewed it was as the author intended it to be。 。。。more

This book delivers on the promise of the title- definitely a book you can pick up, flip through, and find comfort。 Full of quotes and ideas and mantras to help you find the strength to get through the day, or the hour, or just current minute。 A great book to give to yourself and to your friends- maybe couple it with his amazing book The Midnight Library。 If you liked Notes on a Nervous Planet, this will be your jam。

The Comfort Book is a lovely read filled with the author's thoughts on being kind to oneself and offers pick-me-ups for when everything feels awful。 As someone who experiences anxiety and depression, I was touched by the way the author reframes severe thoughts people get stuck in into something more transient and tolerable。 He also speaks of gratitude in encouraging ways rather than you should feel/do this or that。 I read a little bit of the book each night before going to sleep。 It's both uplif The Comfort Book is a lovely read filled with the author's thoughts on being kind to oneself and offers pick-me-ups for when everything feels awful。 As someone who experiences anxiety and depression, I was touched by the way the author reframes severe thoughts people get stuck in into something more transient and tolerable。 He also speaks of gratitude in encouraging ways rather than you should feel/do this or that。 I read a little bit of the book each night before going to sleep。 It's both uplifting and calming。 I bookmarked many pages and know I will jot some of his passages down to put in a place I see regularly。 I highly recommend this book。I am a library paraprofessional and received an advance copy of this book。 Thoughts are my own。 。。。more

THE COMFORT BOOK is exactly that- a book about comfort。 With every Matt Haig book, it makes you think about everything in a much deeper way。 This "self help" type of book really makes you think and think hard about your life and a new way to see things in your life。 He tells his own personal stories but also discusses a lot of deeper things with his readers。 This book talks about you being enough。 It is about hope, love, happiness, being on with yourself, and being comfortable with who you are a THE COMFORT BOOK is exactly that- a book about comfort。 With every Matt Haig book, it makes you think about everything in a much deeper way。 This "self help" type of book really makes you think and think hard about your life and a new way to see things in your life。 He tells his own personal stories but also discusses a lot of deeper things with his readers。 This book talks about you being enough。 It is about hope, love, happiness, being on with yourself, and being comfortable with who you are as a person。 You can read this book in one sitting。 You can read a small passage a day。 Every reader will take something different out of the book, which makes it unique! Needless to say, I will thinking about this book for a long time。 。。。more

This book came along at just the right time - I'm so grateful I had a chance to read it early。 Haig's many fans (as evidenced by all the holds on THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY) will appreciate this small volume of essays and vignettes。 I certainly did - it's the kind of book you can read through once very quickly but also return to over and over。 Just as the title says, the essays describe things and thoughts that comfort, especially if you are experiencing depression and/or anxiety。 Haig has always been This book came along at just the right time - I'm so grateful I had a chance to read it early。 Haig's many fans (as evidenced by all the holds on THE MIDNIGHT LIBRARY) will appreciate this small volume of essays and vignettes。 I certainly did - it's the kind of book you can read through once very quickly but also return to over and over。 Just as the title says, the essays describe things and thoughts that comfort, especially if you are experiencing depression and/or anxiety。 Haig has always been upfront about his struggles, which I also appreciate。 。。。more

"The most powerful moment in life is when you decide not to be scared anymore"This book has created so many emotions in me。 Matt Haig has definitely become my favorite author。 I love that he can write different genres including non-fiction, a genre that I don't tend to read a lot and still, entertain me so much。 The Comfort Book is the kind of book that you don't have to read in order, you can skip chapters and read it when you need words of encouragement in your life, it's one of those books th "The most powerful moment in life is when you decide not to be scared anymore"This book has created so many emotions in me。 Matt Haig has definitely become my favorite author。 I love that he can write different genres including non-fiction, a genre that I don't tend to read a lot and still, entertain me so much。 The Comfort Book is the kind of book that you don't have to read in order, you can skip chapters and read it when you need words of encouragement in your life, it's one of those books that I think you should always have on your nightstand。I learned so much from this book even though in my opinion, it was extremely short。 Matt Haig talks about his mental health and the way he has struggled with it his whole life while giving you different recommendations for feel-good movies, recipes, and music。 In addition, Haig tells us how we can continue our lives despite the bad experiences we have had in the past, how to appreciate imperfections as a natural part of our existence and how to accept our mental health and just allow ourselves to live。AMAZING BOOK HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT !!!4。5 STARSThank you so much to Penguin Group for this Arc in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more

I'm a huge fan of Matt Haig, starting with his book, REASONS TO STAY ALIVE。 I have a special affection for his non-fiction and so got very excited when I found out he had another one coming out。 THE COMFORT BOOK is everything you want in a book with that title。 The book is all about seeking comfort in yourself or the small area around you and knowing that you are, indeed, enough。 It's a book of hope and relief, of happiness and catharsis, and, of course, of comfort。 Matt doesn't ask much of his I'm a huge fan of Matt Haig, starting with his book, REASONS TO STAY ALIVE。 I have a special affection for his non-fiction and so got very excited when I found out he had another one coming out。 THE COMFORT BOOK is everything you want in a book with that title。 The book is all about seeking comfort in yourself or the small area around you and knowing that you are, indeed, enough。 It's a book of hope and relief, of happiness and catharsis, and, of course, of comfort。 Matt doesn't ask much of his readers because he knows that when people suffer, we suffer in all sorts of ways and no two solutions work for the same people。 This book is structured so you can take a tiny dose of comfort or sit down for an hour and reflect on the thoughts Matt shares in this book。 I highly recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a "pick-me-up" in book form, those needing reassurance that it's okay to just be okay, and anyone who loved his previous works like REASONS TO STAY ALIVE and NOTES ON A NERVOUS PLANET。 ***read thanks to an ARC from Penguin** 。。。more

I’ve read every book Matt Haig has published, and this book is classic Matt Haig。 While it’s titled The Comfort Book, I see it more as a book of mental health devotionals。 As such, I recommend a little reading on bad days rather powering through from cover-to-cover。 Haig's voice is sincere and authentic, speaking from a place of understanding, so though this book doesn't really have any new insights, that's rather the point of why it's comforting。 You know what you're going to get。 Haig gives us I’ve read every book Matt Haig has published, and this book is classic Matt Haig。 While it’s titled The Comfort Book, I see it more as a book of mental health devotionals。 As such, I recommend a little reading on bad days rather powering through from cover-to-cover。 Haig's voice is sincere and authentic, speaking from a place of understanding, so though this book doesn't really have any new insights, that's rather the point of why it's comforting。 You know what you're going to get。 Haig gives us a "The Best of---" with his words, his re-words, and the occasional quote to use as reference for further reading。 Haig readers won't be disappointed as long as they approach the book understanding this text reads like well-worn slippers feel。 。。。more
