Summary

*Running Time => 9 hrs。 and 56 mins。*

An immersive account of a tragedy at sea whose repercussions haunt its survivors to this day。

In March of 1984, the commercial fishing boat Wind Blown, a commercial fishing boat, left Montauk Harbor on what should have been a routine offshore voyage。 Its captain, a married father of three young boys, was the boats owner and leader of the four-man crew, which included two locals and the blue-blooded son of a well-to-do summer family。 After a week at sea, the weather suddenly turned, and the foursome collided with a nor'easter。 They soon found themselves in the fight of their lives。 Tragically, it was a fight lost。 Neither the boat nor the bodies of the men were ever recovered。

The fate of the Wind Blown - the second-worst nautical disaster suffered by a Montauk-based fishing vessel in over a hundred years - has become interwoven with the local folklore of the East End’s year-round population。 Back then, on the easternmost tip of Long Island, before Wall Street and hedge fund money stormed into town, commercial fishing was the area's economic lifeblood。

With profound insight and unerring respect, journalist Amanda Fairbanks recounts the lead-up to the tragedy and delves into questions that have haunted the community for more than thirty years: What happens to a community’s working class when money - the kind that can buy a twenty million dollar beachfront home, or pay the initiation fee for entry into an elite golf club - takes over? Why does an event more than three decades old remain so vivid in people’s minds? And how does grief alter people’s memories?

The story itself is a universal tale of family and brotherhood; it's about what happens when the dreams and ambitions of affluent and working-class families collide。 Captivating and powerful, 'THE LOST BOYS OF MONTAUK' explores one of the most important questions we face as humans: how do memories of the dead inform the lives of those left behind?

I loved this book! I wept at the end for the boys lost at sea and for the families - mothers, wives, girlfriends, children - left behind who struggle to find closure over many years。 Their stories are moving and riveting and beautifully written。

I am always interested and intrigued by books and movies that take place on the sea, and this book was just another one of them。 It was thoroughly researched ( almost too much so) and it tells the story of four young fishermen who were lost at sea in 1984 out of Montauk NY。 It is a non-fiction book, that read like a novel。 There was so much information about so many people, extended family members of the victims, friends, places and times, that the story of the lost men at sea sort of got lost i I am always interested and intrigued by books and movies that take place on the sea, and this book was just another one of them。 It was thoroughly researched ( almost too much so) and it tells the story of four young fishermen who were lost at sea in 1984 out of Montauk NY。 It is a non-fiction book, that read like a novel。 There was so much information about so many people, extended family members of the victims, friends, places and times, that the story of the lost men at sea sort of got lost in the shuffle at times。 It was told in a bit of a disordered way, yet I hung in until the very end to find out the secrets being harbored by some of the main people left behind。 Thanks to Simon & Schuster and Edelweiss for the advanced digital review copy。 。。。more

What a fabulous, unforgettable book。 Fairbanks is a masterful storyteller, combining a novelist's sense of poetry and suspense with an investigative reporter's clear-eyed quest for the truth。 Propulsive and moving, The Lost Boys of Montauk recaptures a lost bohemian era in what is now one of the ritziest areas on eastern Long Island。 Fairbanks details a fascinating collision of social classes in the early '80s: Rich kid Dave Connick grew up on Park Avenue and defies his wealthy parents, trading What a fabulous, unforgettable book。 Fairbanks is a masterful storyteller, combining a novelist's sense of poetry and suspense with an investigative reporter's clear-eyed quest for the truth。 Propulsive and moving, The Lost Boys of Montauk recaptures a lost bohemian era in what is now one of the ritziest areas on eastern Long Island。 Fairbanks details a fascinating collision of social classes in the early '80s: Rich kid Dave Connick grew up on Park Avenue and defies his wealthy parents, trading Wall Street for a South Fork fisherman's life。 He joins an adventurous crew on the Wind Blown。 The vessel's fishermen come from all walks of life and represent the divide between the moneyed, May-September city people and the middle-class residents who stay in town all year round。 But each is united by a deep and abiding love of the sea, and each is haunted by an imperfect father。 Their stories will stay with you forever。 。。。more

For some of us, the lure of the ocean is something that gives us immense joy, fulfillment and a sense of identity。 With all that it can give, however, it can take in an instant。 Amanda Fairbanks gives a comprehensive well-researched look into the connection these men felt for the ocean, their motivations to keep going back for more & the lives they left incomplete back on shore。

This one didn't do it for me。 I wanted to like this one。 I feel bad that 4 men lost their lives and were never found and their family still mourns them。 The author is trying to keep these men alive even just in memory with her book and that is commendable。However, there were frequently too many TMIs, and maybe I'm not a man so maybe they're wired differently, but personally if I had died I would not want someone writing about the age I lost my virginity and whether or not I have sex while on my This one didn't do it for me。 I wanted to like this one。 I feel bad that 4 men lost their lives and were never found and their family still mourns them。 The author is trying to keep these men alive even just in memory with her book and that is commendable。However, there were frequently too many TMIs, and maybe I'm not a man so maybe they're wired differently, but personally if I had died I would not want someone writing about the age I lost my virginity and whether or not I have sex while on my period。The book is super disjointed。 The first part is called "before", but jumps around in time even in that section, and then focuses on two of the men, then "after", then more of the men and its just so all over the place that I could feel my eyes glazing over。 Each chapter jumps around in time and it just didn't seem coherent。I can't recommend unless maybe you're really really into fishing and fishermen?Also why are there so many 5 star reviews of this book where the people only liked this one book? 。。。more

2。5 stars! The publisher was nice enough to reach out to me with a free copy of this book。 The author definitely did a lot of research into the various histories of the families involved but I didn’t feel like I got to know the four men themselves enough。 It was a little too long and drawn out as well。

Amanda Fairbanks does a brilliant job of telling a nonfictional story in a beautiful and creative way。 Not only does she educate the reader about the Hamptons and commercial fishing in the 1980s, she also resuscitates the complex and compelling characters who are part of this important story。 I recognized parts of myself in all these characters, and they have stayed with me long after I finished the book。 Do yourself a favor, and buy this book。 You won't be able to put it down。 Amanda Fairbanks does a brilliant job of telling a nonfictional story in a beautiful and creative way。 Not only does she educate the reader about the Hamptons and commercial fishing in the 1980s, she also resuscitates the complex and compelling characters who are part of this important story。 I recognized parts of myself in all these characters, and they have stayed with me long after I finished the book。 Do yourself a favor, and buy this book。 You won't be able to put it down。 。。。more

Want to travel back to a place that’s almost gone and learn about an incredibly compelling story? This is the book to read。 Montauk had long been a quiet fishing village far away from so much of New York City’s bustle。 There are so many stories of surfers, fishermen and local characters and the author captures them - and weaves them together- beautifully。 I hope everyone reads this book and these stories are preserved and learned and held in hearts。
