This is a famous self-help book that hasn’t been out of print since 1937。 I first read it way back in the late 1980s when I borrowed my father’s copy because I thought the title looked interesting。 At the time, I was an awkward teenager, knew very little about the historical figures referenced in the text, and didn’t really understand what it meant。 Today, as a middle-aged adult, it makes much more sense, with its no-nonsense message of taking responsibility for yourself by merely changing the w This is a famous self-help book that hasn’t been out of print since 1937。 I first read it way back in the late 1980s when I borrowed my father’s copy because I thought the title looked interesting。 At the time, I was an awkward teenager, knew very little about the historical figures referenced in the text, and didn’t really understand what it meant。 Today, as a middle-aged adult, it makes much more sense, with its no-nonsense message of taking responsibility for yourself by merely changing the way you think。 Of course, just sitting on your backside lost in thought isn’t enough; you actually have to do something as well。 The section on overcoming fears is probably the best, as fear rather than circumstance is the main reason for failure。 As I heard a witty commentator say on a recent podcast: “Get out of your own way。” You could criticise it for being “too American” or “too capitalist” and there might be some truth to that, focusing as it does on the financial success of prominent businessmen such as Thomas Edison and Henry Ford, and the rapid rise of the Coca-Cola company at the start of the twentieth century, with scant attention to the more intangible riches of happiness or personal fulfillment。 Consider though that it was first published in the middle of the Great Depression, and the author says clearly that he wrote it in response to the grim financial despair that the period had produced。 It’s also written in an old-fashioned way, with amusing turns of phrase that sometimes seem to be straight out of old Hollywood movies or other books of the time。It would be nice to see a revised, modern edition, more balanced and updated to take into account successful people today, no matter how they define “achievement” – lots of money, sporting champion, top scientist, loving family, general happiness – there are endless possibilities。 Nevertheless, his basic message is sound, echoed by all of the self-help gurus: only you are responsible for yourself, and thought is the first step in how you move forward。 。。。more

No esperaba lo que encontré en este libro。 Estoy seguro que leerlo de nuevo me hará encontrar cosas diferentes a las que entendí en esta primera ocasión。 Espero poderlo averiguar。

The first chapter was great, but the rest of the book was weird / sucked。 Would definitely recommend spark notes on this one after the first chapter。 Weird spiritual vibes。

As a financially literate biracial women I found I could not enjoy this book beyond the first few chapters。Written originally in the 1930s this POV is from that of a racist white male seated in privilege。 One of the opening anecdotes is about a wealthy white man who meets a young child from a poor family who is also a POC - the story refers to this child with derogatory language but fixates on “how did a POC child outsmart/outwill her superior into giving the child what she wanted。”This anecdote As a financially literate biracial women I found I could not enjoy this book beyond the first few chapters。Written originally in the 1930s this POV is from that of a racist white male seated in privilege。 One of the opening anecdotes is about a wealthy white man who meets a young child from a poor family who is also a POC - the story refers to this child with derogatory language but fixates on “how did a POC child outsmart/outwill her superior into giving the child what she wanted。”This anecdote is unhinged and ridiculous。 Poverty and prejudice force minorities to fight for their lives and the right to exist everyday。 This anecdote while obviously laced with colonialism, racism and privilege reminded me of something obvious: I don’t need to take financial advice from a racist white man from 1937。 There are plenty of modern, inclusive, feminist, POC financial thinkers and writers。 We don’t need to give royalties and continuing sharing literature THATS outdated and racist。 Let’s move our study elsewhere and not finish books written by folks like this。 。。。more

Phenomenal in my opinion。 There's no get rich quick solution magically placed in your lap here。 But the mindset and thought processes laid out in this book are game changing for those willing and ready to open their minds。 Phenomenal in my opinion。 There's no get rich quick solution magically placed in your lap here。 But the mindset and thought processes laid out in this book are game changing for those willing and ready to open their minds。 。。。more

While this might be a classic it is very old school and contradicts the lean startup process。 Stories of specific people who grit worked for them。 No analysis on if this works at scale and with people who aren't as privileged as them。 While this might be a classic it is very old school and contradicts the lean startup process。 Stories of specific people who grit worked for them。 No analysis on if this works at scale and with people who aren't as privileged as them。 。。。more

Good book for your mindset。 Hill shows a great way to set your mind up for success。 Especially good for those who are just starting out with personal development。Unfortunately, later in the book he gets to much into kinda spiritual things, like brain waves and the ether。 For me, as an realist, it's nonsense。 Good book for your mindset。 Hill shows a great way to set your mind up for success。 Especially good for those who are just starting out with personal development。Unfortunately, later in the book he gets to much into kinda spiritual things, like brain waves and the ether。 For me, as an realist, it's nonsense。 。。。more

Overall, timeless principles I still see to be true today almost 100 years after the book was written。 My only hold was the chapter on Sex Transmutation as it seemed to be a bit outdated (sexist/misogynistic)。 Would be curious what a modern take on this chapter would entail。

I cannot believe I did not give this book a chance before but that's alright the timing couldn't be any perfect。 I am going through a rough patch at this point of time in my life。 And a book that had been written 80 odd years ago gave me reassurance that everything that I am going through right now can be dealt with faith, persistence and quality thoughts。 Think and grow rich is not a one time read for entertainment。 People who really mean business has to go back to this book every now and then I cannot believe I did not give this book a chance before but that's alright the timing couldn't be any perfect。 I am going through a rough patch at this point of time in my life。 And a book that had been written 80 odd years ago gave me reassurance that everything that I am going through right now can be dealt with faith, persistence and quality thoughts。 Think and grow rich is not a one time read for entertainment。 People who really mean business has to go back to this book every now and then persistently trying to apply the ideas mentioned by the author。 The author has pointed out some self analytical questions that we could ask in order to know more about ourselves。 Working on ourselves is never any easy task。 It has to be consistent and sincere with lots of faith and courage you can muster。 Of course things are not going to be sailing smoothly all the time but when you have faith in yourself and a will to row ahead you'll end up some place that would give you some contentment。 Some of my favourite quotes are Think and grow rich are1。 “The starting point of all achievement is DESIRE。 Keep this constantly in mind。 Weak desire brings weak results, just as a small fire makes a small amount of heat。”2。 “Before success comes in any man’s life, he is sure to meet with much temporary defeat, and, perhaps, some failure。 When defeat overtakes a man, the easiest and most logical thing to do is to quit。 That is exactly what the majority of men do。 More than five hundred of the most successful men this country has ever known told the author their greatest success came just one step beyond the point at which defeat had overtaken them。”3。“Opinions are the cheapest commodities on earth。 Everyone has a flock of opinions ready to be wished upon anyone who will accept them。 If you are influenced by "opinions" when you reach DECISIONS, you will not succeed in any undertaking。” 。。。more

Self-help books can be pleasant changes of pace, and this is the seminal work of the genre。 Gets a bit too metaphysical for my taste towards the end。

Though it's a good read, time to time the lessons seem discriminatory and this can be understood as it was published in early 20th century。Moreover, a fine summary would be enough to cover the lessons by Napoleon Hill。 Though it's a good read, time to time the lessons seem discriminatory and this can be understood as it was published in early 20th century。Moreover, a fine summary would be enough to cover the lessons by Napoleon Hill。 。。。more
