This is the beginning of a new arc, the conviction arc。 I enjoyed it a lot。 There is a huge religious vibe throughout the book。 Guts goes through various towns and villages where a plague is literally killing everyone。 On top of that, you have inquisitors that are taking advantage of the situation and declare anybody who is not applying their laws heretics。 Man, those heretics end up in nasty torture situation。 Can't wait to read Volume 7 where the actual arc will pick up! "Conviction" arc starts a little slow but by the last 3rd of the book gets really interesting。 Artwork is top tier。 Hard to rate it higher as it does not hit the peaks of prior volumes but is more of a continuation of what has been established。 If you have already read this far into Berserk rest assured this won't disappoint。 "Conviction" arc starts a little slow but by the last 3rd of the book gets really interesting。 Artwork is top tier。 Hard to rate it higher as it does not hit the peaks of prior volumes but is more of a continuation of what has been established。 If you have already read this far into Berserk rest assured this won't disappoint。 。。。more

4。8/5Vols。 16-18 of Miura's epic Berserk manga is full of some truly horrific shit to look at。 As the visual horrors amp up into some of the most dreadful moods I have ever felt from this medium, the story continues to be compelling without really being all that exploitative, which is surprising。 But given the heavy witch trial inspiration, it's only natural that this contains some of the darkest, most gruesome scenes of torture and hedonism you'll ever see。 The shock value doesn't override the 4。8/5Vols。 16-18 of Miura's epic Berserk manga is full of some truly horrific shit to look at。 As the visual horrors amp up into some of the most dreadful moods I have ever felt from this medium, the story continues to be compelling without really being all that exploitative, which is surprising。 But given the heavy witch trial inspiration, it's only natural that this contains some of the darkest, most gruesome scenes of torture and hedonism you'll ever see。 The shock value doesn't override the story or take priority over the characters or writing。 Miura skillfully uses every aspect to his advantage, and I'm tempted to say that the Conviction Arc is one of the best story arcs in Berserk so far。 。。。more

This book collects volumes 16, 17, and 18 and is a large chunk of the Conviction Arc - dealing with the end of the Lost Children Chapter, and the beginning of The Birth Chapter。The Lost Children is why I am giving this volume 4 starts instead of 5。 While overall Berserk is still an excellent manga with incredibly detailed art, complex and compelling characters, and a fascinating world - the Lost Children was a little weaker than normal。 It took a bit too long for such a smaller story and I didn' This book collects volumes 16, 17, and 18 and is a large chunk of the Conviction Arc - dealing with the end of the Lost Children Chapter, and the beginning of The Birth Chapter。The Lost Children is why I am giving this volume 4 starts instead of 5。 While overall Berserk is still an excellent manga with incredibly detailed art, complex and compelling characters, and a fascinating world - the Lost Children was a little weaker than normal。 It took a bit too long for such a smaller story and I didn't really enjoy the side characters of Jill or the "Queen Elf" Rosine as much as some of the other stories so far。However after that chapter closes the manga hits a great stride。 It was great seeing Rickert and Godo again, especially how they have grown and how they bring back some humanity to Guts。 Letting Guts get some rest and reflection also helped strengthen his character。 The appearance of the "Beast of Darkness" that seems to haunt Guts and goad him deeper into madness and fury is a beautiful and terrifying wrinkle to his character。 In general Guts' struggle to maintain his humanity in this book has made for some incredibly satisfying storytelling。 The symbolism of the campfires makes a comeback in this book and it's such a strong image。 Guts earlier compared the campfires of his companions as dreams that he can warm himself with。 Now he recalls those images and that feeling and says the fire still burns within him。 It's also in there with the darkness and the blackness that keeps him on his feet。 I love that this book pulls back from Guts' singular minded pursuit and starts looking at the world at large。 We revisit Princess Charlotte - who I hope comes back in a larger way。 We revisit Wyndham and bring back some of the larger politics with an invasion by the Kushan。 The Holy Iron Chain Knights, Lady Farnese, and in particular - Serpico - get further exploration and expansion。 Serpico is a fascinating character and one I can't wait to learn more about。 Lady Farnese has a sickness about her that makes her a compelling villain but can be used to make her a sympathetic figure。 Every major character is given facets and flaws and made three-dimensional in a way that is so rare in manga but so satisfying。 Isidro also is introduced, and spunky kid characters never do much for me - especially since Guts already has Puck as a sort of comic relief to bounce off of。 He doesn't have much to do yet but maybe he will grow into a more interesting character。With the tease of a Griffith comeback it's going to make waiting for March 2021 much harder to see more of the Conviction Arc。 This book was fantastic。 And in the grand scheme of things Berserk is still a 5/5 or a 10/10 overall for me。 。。。more

If you have gotten this far, you are probably already aware that while Kentaro Miura sensei creates some stunning, moody art, it can be a bit gratuitous。 It feels like, at this point in the series, Miura is really getting into his groove。 The backgrounds on giant splash pages are deeper, seedier, and more atmospheric—very different from some of the sterile backgrounds that we saw in earlier volumes。 The many chapter battle with the Queen of the Elves, while not my favorite in the Conviction arc If you have gotten this far, you are probably already aware that while Kentaro Miura sensei creates some stunning, moody art, it can be a bit gratuitous。 It feels like, at this point in the series, Miura is really getting into his groove。 The backgrounds on giant splash pages are deeper, seedier, and more atmospheric—very different from some of the sterile backgrounds that we saw in earlier volumes。 The many chapter battle with the Queen of the Elves, while not my favorite in the Conviction arc, is full of dramatic, action filled panels。 It’s crazy to think after six of these big, beautiful volumes we are not even at the halfway point。 There’s is lots more dark, psychedelic, gore-filled adventure to come (and a lot more Farnese, Serpico, and Snea。。。 er。。。 Isidro)。 。。。more

This volume starts with the ending in the Fairy Forest, gets a bit "slow" in the middle when Gats returns after two years to the blacksmith。 After that the religious fanatics start appearing。 And that goat man still freaks me out。 I loved this collection of volumes。 Even though the translations of the names looked to be wrong in the beginning。 This volume starts with the ending in the Fairy Forest, gets a bit "slow" in the middle when Gats returns after two years to the blacksmith。 After that the religious fanatics start appearing。 And that goat man still freaks me out。 I loved this collection of volumes。 Even though the translations of the names looked to be wrong in the beginning。 。。。more

Consistent flawless story telling。 this volume is arguably the goriest one so far! the drawings of the violence, torture and other macabre incidents bring this edition to life。 The relationship between guts and puck gets even better too and provides some comedic relief to some dark moments

As if demons weren't enough, now we've got religious fanatics and a foreign army added to the mix。 Some of it--especially the zealots--feels a bit out of left field at first, but gradually everything starts becoming connected, at least tangentially。 I still have a lot of questions, particularly about the Skull Knight, and how the war is going to affect the story going forward, but they'll have to wait for a later volume。 I will say that some of the new characters introduced are very unsettling, As if demons weren't enough, now we've got religious fanatics and a foreign army added to the mix。 Some of it--especially the zealots--feels a bit out of left field at first, but gradually everything starts becoming connected, at least tangentially。 I still have a lot of questions, particularly about the Skull Knight, and how the war is going to affect the story going forward, but they'll have to wait for a later volume。 I will say that some of the new characters introduced are very unsettling, and I can't wait to see Guts hack some of them to pieces, but that's something else that'll have to wait。All in all, volume 6 is a good balance of world building, action, and drama。 And it ends right before all hell breaks loose (again)。 There might be a few chapters still before that tipping point, but I have a feeling volume 7 is going to be an absolute horrorshow, in the best way possible。 。。。more

"YOU ARE OUTSIDE THE REASON OF THE WORLD。" Buddy, it sure feels like it。The Golden Age is already remote at this point in the story。 At a couple points in this volume, I figured the story had reached a plateau of depravity, and every time I was wrong。 It's not possible to become complacent reading Berserk。 When you think that the characters truly have nothing left to lose, Miura finds some yet more precious thing to steal from them。 But, by its nature, such a loss points toward something new to "YOU ARE OUTSIDE THE REASON OF THE WORLD。" Buddy, it sure feels like it。The Golden Age is already remote at this point in the story。 At a couple points in this volume, I figured the story had reached a plateau of depravity, and every time I was wrong。 It's not possible to become complacent reading Berserk。 When you think that the characters truly have nothing left to lose, Miura finds some yet more precious thing to steal from them。 But, by its nature, such a loss points toward something new to cherish。 Every new place Berserk finds to hurt you is, potentially, a part of your heart you didn't yet know you had。 Consequently, the deeper Berserk appears to sink into a nihilistic mire, the closer I think it might be getting to something properly transcendent。 I guess what I'm saying is that it makes a lot of sense to me that this is the volume where Berserk gets interested in sadomasochism。 。。。more
