This is my review of Berserk’s Golden Age Arc contained in volumes 4 through 14。tI can’t say much more about the Golden Age Arc that hasn’t already been said。 I first experienced the arc when I say much more about the Golden Age Arc that hasn’t already been said。 I first experienced the arc when I watched the ’97 anime, but the breadth of the story lies within the manga’s pages。 Sure there’s the brutal fighting that I’m sure many action fans read Berserk for, but its spaced out between some really stunning character setup and development of protagonists, antagonists, side characters and their human desire to go somewhere or indulge in their sometimes extremely dark indulgences。 Looking at you King of Midland and Wyald。 Throughout this arc Miura creates a story that’s brutally illustrated by dark glory and quiet existentialism, and there’s plenty of reasons it remains the most iconic arc in Berserk and manga as a genre。tThe scope of many fantasy stories generally keeps me away from the genre。 Sure I love Tolkien and some light dragon fighting or necromancy every now and again, but the entertaining magic and swordplay of the genre often feels like there’s much weight to the consequences。 Berserk’s setting of the kingdom of Midland feels generic, as there’s not much of a sense of why Miura’s battles are being fought。 However the rest of the story is a mold breaker that cuts through the spectacle of fantasy tropes and balances story and substance with violence, gore, demonic pacts and existential conquests。 The lack of worldbuilding sinks into the background when the plot develops through moral choices led by traumatized and purpose-seeking cast。The relationship triangle of Griffith, Guts and Casca is such a beautiful and complex story in and of itself, and I’m really happy that it’s the focus of the writing during the arc。 The icing on the cake is how Pippin, Corkus, and Judeau comment on their personal stake in the Hawks’ fate cradled in Griffith’s sinister dream。 Griffith getting his own kingdom is fulfilled in the most fucked up way possible, and you feel the full moral weight come crashing down on you and the entire cast alike。 When the trio dissolves, its heartbreaking to see Guts realize that Casca’s change may never warrant the same emotional fulfillment they once found in each other。tIf there’s something that’s consistently annoyed me with Berserk it’s the setup and buildup of minor villains, many of whom suffer the same fate as Bazuso in the very beginning。 Guts kicks so much ass and that’s fantastic, but as a reader knowing there’s 39 volumes out there, the danger he’s put in starts to wear thin。 There’s greater and greater foes that Guts has to kill but he succeeds in the same way every time, with the stands full of adoring fans watching every time。 The fighting takes up a lot of the manga and the payoff satisfaction comes from the characters pursuing or realizing their dreams。 But the process of getting there feels very similar and bland, whether Guts is storming a castle or killing literally a hundred pursuers。 The psychological effects of those encounters affects everyone but knowing Guts will just blow through the fights and come out on top has felt tedious at times。tIf you have a disposition where you can read sordid things, I cannot recommend this arc enough。 Miura depicts gruesome torture, violent dismemberment, murder and abuse of children, and graphic sexual assault throughout Berserk, so I don’t recommend it if any of those things strongly affect you。 They all play into the story, and with the rapey exception of Wyald’s gross tongue, aren’t just for edgy shock value。 Most of the time the sordid stuff is shown to have dire psychological consequences on Berserk’s characters。 That being said, I’d recommend passing if you’re like me and your mental illness amplifies the impact of media you consume。tI’m keeping in mind some of the Berserk universe’s rules for future arcs。 I’m always skeptical of using fate as a theme, because it often seems both bleak and makes the characters actions feel hollow。 I speculate that Skull Knight’s explanation of the Godhand’s rule of fate will be tested by our grumpy Struggler throughout the series。 Because of Berserk’s writing quality so far I could see some interesting payoff with how that ruling of fate will pay off。 I’m also eager to see how Skull Knight, Zodd, and the Godhand’s backstories will all play into each other, as a webbing of their relationships has been hinted at。For those willing to plunge into the dark side of human fulfillment, I highly recommend this manga。 Berserk blends fantasy and horror with a unique art style and focused story for a satisfying read。 Miura sets out to write characters and have their motivations and desires tested by demons, glory and war。 It’s a pretty straightforward formula that’s been copied and rewritten in less interesting ways。 Miura’s also a hell of an artist with a particular eye for monster body horror and the macabre。 For fourteen volumes he’s balanced brutally detailed violence and tender introspection, and I hope it continues to work during the rest of the series。 。。。more

(Zero spoiler review)This series makes me feel like such a nit picking killjoy。 I mean, you have some of the most ball shrivelling art you will ever see。 Gratuitous violence, demons as well as a bit of sexy time now and then, and yet, all I can think about whilst reading this series is rewriting it。 About taking the imperfections with the Japanese method of storytelling and turn this very good yet flawed series into quite frankly, one of the greatest literary creations within the medium。 No, I'm (Zero spoiler review)This series makes me feel like such a nit picking killjoy。 I mean, you have some of the most ball shrivelling art you will ever see。 Gratuitous violence, demons as well as a bit of sexy time now and then, and yet, all I can think about whilst reading this series is rewriting it。 About taking the imperfections with the Japanese method of storytelling and turn this very good yet flawed series into quite frankly, one of the greatest literary creations within the medium。 No, I'm not overly arrogant or self absorbed, I just can't, as much as I try, resolve the issues I have with the manga stereotypes that even the great Kentaro Mura doesn't seem immune。 In fact, they rear their head more here than I recall them doing in volume 2。 The unnecessary comedic interference, to the detriment of the moment。 Panel after panel of nothing but empty speech bubbles, individual words, or 。。。。。。。。。 We also have a book overloaded with battle scenes。 Don't get me wrong, they look amazing for the most part, but the book truly shines during the small moments in between the big set pieces, when the plot is dragged forward, kicking and screaming。 When characters interact。 When scheming and deception reign。 The final arc of this series is by far the best in this regard。 We get quite a few little twists and small character moments, which made the previous two issues of battle weary exploits a little more worth it, but I'm still left wanting more from this mostly amazing series。 In the end, the issue of me perhaps not 'getting' with manga as much as I would like is for me to deal with。 You can't keep bating a dead horse and expect it to spring back to life or turn into a unicorn。 Berserk is wonderful in so many ways, although narratively, It frequently leaves me wanting。 4/5OmniBen。 。。。more

With the third and so far biggest volume of Berserk, the story begins to unravel slowly。 Its still very action packed, but its also getting more human in its story telling。 There are intrigues and powerplays and alot of story arcs in this one。 Its more violent,  more sexual, but also better, lets just say its getting Game of Thrones like! The artwork is also getting better and better and i just cant wait to read the second one next month。 Another 🌟🌟🌟🌟 read。

Loved it! It’s full of action with great battles, but there is so much story as well。 The character development was well-done and gave more depth to the Band of the Hawk。 Also the build of the deluxe edition and the art is just magnificent! Will definitely continue, just need to get my hands on the next volume。

Another remarkable volume in the Berserk series, the story is so absorbing and the artwork is absolutely stunning。

The artwork throughout this entire series has been simply phenomenal and I can only imagine the amount of work that’s been put into this series。 I really loved the story progression in these last 3 books- really shows some complexities to the main characters。 Guts and Casca are adorable as well。

What young adult gets all of that?! I know old codgers that don't have the emotional intelligence to follow all the shit Miurasan is doing here, AND HE'S DOING IT IN A MANGA! This is a man who knows what he wants to say, and respects his art and his audience enough to think they can follow and I'm so happy he set his ambitions this high。 And that's before we talk about the art! Holy crap the art in this thing is something almost beyond description。 Miura pens a manga that has whole chapters where every frame looks like a Victorian mural just waiting for the oil paint, with details on the faces, clothes, and the eyes that tell you more than a dozen pages of text ever could。 When you see Griffith's eyes stare at you from the page you can FEEL his soul looking back at you, you can sense the shock and pain of having something he believes he owns bucking his leash of control and how just that, the act of striving for a life greater than Griffith's own ambitions unsettles his entire world in a way that will foreshadow his final descent into the darkness that has mutated out of the trauma in his soul。Most art dreams of doing what Miura-san does in a frame, not just manga, any art。This is one of the greatest manga of our time, and arguably one of the greatest stories we are currently blessed with。 If you are interested in some amazing moving tragedy in a dark fantasy world, I cannot recommend Berserk highly enough。 。。。more

Finally picking up Berserk again! The art continues to be amazing and the books continue to be absolute black bricks that I struggle to hold for too long without hurting my wrists。Covers a lot of the Golden Age Trilogy territory that I still have vague memories of, so a lot of this rang as familiar, but I feel that I'm gonna have that pulled out from under me with the next volume。 Good stuff。 Finally picking up Berserk again! I am SO glad we have sprung for the deluxe editions because it was such an immersive experience。 Though this did have translations on the sound effects which the regular editions did not。 I found distracting and took me out of it so I learned to ignore them。 I LOVE CASTLE INTRIGUE!!! I like this series because it has a very good balance of supernatural elements and character interactions。 With a heavy focus on characters。 The respect and bond and development of Casca and Gut's freindship/comradeship/mutual respect was so well done。 I can't even think of a sex scene I've ever read that goes through so many emotions。 They went through such a roller coaster in that scene and pretty much achieved every type of vulnerability you could have with someone。 First she tries to kill him because she's so mad, but then she realizes he will LET her kill him, so there you have the intensity of。。。。 allowing yourself to be killed? Then she tries to jump off the cliff and he saves her, and then they have their first sexual experience which triggers a major flashback and then Guts is more vulnerable than EVER and explains what just happened (though he does not tell her that he was raped, he just tells her about Gambino and implies it)。 It was just so well done, in that scene and throughout the volume with the way they earned respect for each other and cared for one another。 Griffith fumbled the bag!!! I could not help but make GOT comparisons throughout this volume。 Obviously minister foss does not have Varys's finesse。 The Queen was similar to Cersei in that she thinks of herself as a schemer but is only playing 3d chess while Griffith is in 5d。 Griffith himself is as if Petyr Baelish was as magnetic and good looking as he is manipulative。 If Baelish had been this sexy he would have been way too powerful。 Griffith also possesses Daenerys's ability to inspire loyalty in the people she commands。 And they have the same hair。 The fact that this series is willing to include extremely fucked up royal incest rape scenes is something I havent seen anywhere other than GOT。 That scene was excruciating to get through and may cause nightmares。 I love Jeudau (I can't spell) for being the emotional intelligence therapy guy of the group。 He does a lot in helping Guts examine himself and he is also a good support for Casca。 He's an angel。 Even though Corkus is annoying for being a negative nancy, I think his character is very important for always bringing a dose of reality and perspective。 Like, all the Hawk members are about to achieve mega class ascendancy that most people where they come from could never dream of。 The fact that Guts is willing to throw it all away for an abstract dream is insulting and also insinuates that none of these other people ever had their own dreams that were crushed by circumstance。 I liked when he said "you think youre the only one who had a fucked up life?????????" But the thing is all 3 sex/rape scenes do not feel egregious because they are given so much weight and miura perfectly encapsulates how each character involved is feeling in the moment。 Especially with Guts and Casca。 In most sex scenes in movies or books its just like "and then they had sex" and they never really talk to eachother, meanwhile they had crazy vulnerability going on as I went over earlier。 It's funny that I just read this book that was about trauma responses after sexual assault and while it was good, this digs in so much deeper (easier to do when you have 40 volumes I guess)which is not what I expected from a fantasy manga。 Yea overall this one really stunned me and having the deluxe edition made it quite an ~experience~。 Overall a 9/10 for this volume, taking away 1 because the beginning volume was a bit underwhelming。 But you need underwhelming parts to get climactic parts so maybe that's still important! Idk im reeling from this i guess it must be a 10/10!!!!!!!!!! 。。。more

When I first started reading Berserk, I had the notion that it would be mostly ultra-violent, demon-slaying action。 And considering how good the opening chapters were, I would've been fine with that。 What I wasn't expecting was for the series to become so poignantly human。The character development in this omnibus is extraordinary。 Hearts are broken and mended。 Dreams are shattered, rekindled, and perverted。 It's a series of triumphs, tragedies, and deeply heartfelt moments。 I'm simply floored by When I first started reading Berserk, I had the notion that it would be mostly ultra-violent, demon-slaying action。 And considering how good the opening chapters were, I would've been fine with that。 What I wasn't expecting was for the series to become so poignantly human。The character development in this omnibus is extraordinary。 Hearts are broken and mended。 Dreams are shattered, rekindled, and perverted。 It's a series of triumphs, tragedies, and deeply heartfelt moments。 I'm simply floored by how emotionally resonant this grim, dark fantasy story has become。Don't get me wrong--there's still quite a bit of action, and it's still very well done。 Some of the battles (regardless of scale) are mesmerizing with how well they're depicted。 But they aren't the focus anymore。 While there's a part of me that still wants to get back to the part at the beginning, where Guts is fighting demons, and literally marked for death, I'm now equally (if no more) invested in how he got to that point。In short, none of the praise I've expressed here is an exaggeration; all the hype around this series is warranted。 If you have any love of well-constructed fantasy worlds, you're doing yourself a disservice if you aren't reading Berserk。 That's all there is to it。 。。。more
