Summary

Yash is the best athlete at Robinette Middle School。 So good, in fact, that's he's already been playing on the high school’s JV sports teams。 Imagine his shock when he learns that his JV practices have kept him from earning a state-mandated credit for eighth-grade PE。 To graduate, he has to take Physical Education Equivalency—PEE—which is also known as "Slugfest," in summer school。

At Slugfest, Yash meets the other students。 Kaden is an academic superstar who's physically hopeless。 Twins Sarah and Stuart are too busy trying to kill each other to actually pay attention in class。 Jesse is a notorious prankster。 Arabella protests just about everything—including mandatory PE。 And Cleo is a natural athlete who has sworn off sports。 Then there’s their “coach,” Mrs。 Tamara Finnerty, a retired teacher whose idea of physical education seems to have frozen in preschool。 But Yash doesn't care—as long as he gets the credit。 Too bad one of his fellow “slugs” is determined to blow the lid off a scandal that could make all their time in summer school a waste。 And if that weren't bad enough, Yash is in danger of losing his star spot on the JV football team。

So Yash recruits his fellow PE rejects to train with him。 Spending the summer with the most hapless crew in school can really surprise a person。 And their teacher might be hiding the biggest surprise yet…。

Thank you to NetGalley for the electronic ARC。 In Slugfest we first meet Archie/Yash, who is an amazing athlete, and is so great that he has been able to skip PE all 8th grade year in order to play on the JV teams at the high school。 Unfortunately, for Yash, the state intervenes and says he needs to take summer PE in order to move on to 9th grade。 This means he misses working and training with the football team all summer。 Yash is not the only one who needs to take summer P。E。E。 or Slugfest, Cle Thank you to NetGalley for the electronic ARC。 In Slugfest we first meet Archie/Yash, who is an amazing athlete, and is so great that he has been able to skip PE all 8th grade year in order to play on the JV teams at the high school。 Unfortunately, for Yash, the state intervenes and says he needs to take summer PE in order to move on to 9th grade。 This means he misses working and training with the football team all summer。 Yash is not the only one who needs to take summer P。E。E。 or Slugfest, Cleo, also a gifted athlete who has just recovered from a serious foot injury and has sworn off sports, Kaden, a brilliant, but klutzy student, two fighting twins, serial PE skipper, Arabella, and Fiona a tech wiz and on the water polo team To make matters even worse, the class is taught by a retired teacher, Mrs。 Finnerty, who taught 2nd grade and FACs, so definitely not a PE teacher。 Korman has a huge band of readers in my school so this will be an easy sell because like his other books, it's just the right length, plot driven, with excellent character development, and a mix of realistic and humor; Fans of any underdog sports tales will enjoy his latest。 。。。more

Gordon Korman delivers yet again with Slugfest。 While the overarching plot is the 'football underdogs' storyline, there are a few subplots in the story that were absolutely phenomenal as well。 My only complaint was that I wouldn't have minded if the more underrepresented characters were given more chapters, especially Kaden and Fiona, however, this book is still an absolute must-read。 Gordon Korman delivers yet again with Slugfest。 While the overarching plot is the 'football underdogs' storyline, there are a few subplots in the story that were absolutely phenomenal as well。 My only complaint was that I wouldn't have minded if the more underrepresented characters were given more chapters, especially Kaden and Fiona, however, this book is still an absolute must-read。 。。。more

I loved this book, particularly the overall positive message that should land this book in every middle school classroom and library! The cast and characters are well rounded and realistic, and they reminded me of what you might find if "The Breakfast Club" met middle grade summer school。 And I loved the baking PE teacher! With the multiple POV's, there's a bit of something for everyone (including sports, humor, and encouragement)。 It's easy to root for the underdogs (such as "The Mighty Ducks") I loved this book, particularly the overall positive message that should land this book in every middle school classroom and library! Yash missed all of 8th grade PE playing up on the high school JV teams; he’s a fabulous athlete so it’s especially unfair that he’s required to earn that missing middle school credit over the summer along with a small group of students and their instructor, a Home Ec teacher who has come out of retirement and whose lessons always include baked goods。 This is vintage Korman with an ensemble cast of humorous characters who manage to grow and change while working together。 I’ve been reading Korman’ Yash missed all of 8th grade PE playing up on the high school JV teams; he’s a fabulous athlete so it’s especially unfair that he’s required to earn that missing middle school credit over the summer along with a small group of students and their instructor, a Home Ec teacher who has come out of retirement and whose lessons always include baked goods。 This is vintage Korman with an ensemble cast of humorous characters who manage to grow and change while working together。 I’ve been reading Korman’s work since McDonald Hall and enjoyed the connections to Toilet Paper Tigers。 His fans won’t be disappointed。 EARC from Edelweiss 。。。more

Hard to go wrong with that。 The characters are all well developed and easy to tell apart, and are all very passionate about various things, which is always good to see。 There's a lot of realistic interactions, and the romance between Bella and Nick is good to see。 The fact that Nick is playing for the district by giving his aunt's address is also something that happens all too often。 I have to say that Mrs。 Finnerty really steals the show here, and her reasoning behind the "childish" games is actually very clever。 There are way too many elderly and infirm grandparents and teachers in middle grade literature, so to see someone who's about 75 being shown as being active and a former Olympian is fantastic。 Basketball coach Sister Louisa in Jenn Bishop's Free Throws, Friendship, and Other Things We Fouled Up and the grandfather who was a bodybuilder in Herbach's Fat Boy vs。 The Cheerleaders (2014) are other good examples of vibrant older characters。 Weaknesses: There were a number of school details that gave me a little pause; middle school students not getting credits seems unlikely, although I'm not sure how Kaden and Arabella managed to cut so many classes。 Summer school is usually half a day, and there usually is no open house。 The kids wouldn't need to hack into the teacher certification database; it's public record。 This also had more stereotypical characters than I'm used to seeing in Korman's work。 The football players don't come off particularly well。 What I really think: While these ensemble cast books are okay, I really miss seeing Korman develop one character。 I'd love to see him go back to his McDonald Hall roots and do a small series without the multiple perspectives; a sports series would be fantastic。 I'll definitely purchase a copy because my students are such avid fans, but the style of this isn't a personal favorite。 。。。more

Gordon Korman does it again, showing how the most unlikely group of kids can bond and become friends。 Summer school is hard enough, but when you’re the star athlete of the football team, it’s a crushing blow。 Yash takes it all in stride and makes lemonade out of lemons in this multiple perspective novel of teamwork, friendship, and building community。

Another hit for author Gordon Korman! Each chapter rotates the characters narrating from their point of view。 Mr。 Korman is so good and writing how the characters grow throughout the story。 You may not notice it right away but then you get there and realize, "Oh yes, they did do that differently this time。" A must-have for all libraries to add to their Gordon Korman collections! @gordonkorman #GordonKorman #Slugfest #SchoolLibrary SchoolLibrarians #ReadABook #Books #Read #KidLit #ElementaryBooks Another hit for author Gordon Korman! In Slugfest, a group of middle school boys and girls have to repeat PE to earn the credit they didn't earn before they can move on to high school。 This is a story of trials and tribulations amongst students of varying backgrounds and told from each of their points of view。 The story was somewhat predictable, but the ending was what I would hope and dream every 8th grade student would act like。 Once again, another Korman book I will be adding to my library for the students to read。Thank you, NetG In Slugfest, a group of middle school boys and girls have to repeat PE to earn the credit they didn't earn before they can move on to high school。 This is a story of trials and tribulations amongst students of varying backgrounds and told from each of their points of view。 The story was somewhat predictable, but the ending was what I would hope and dream every 8th grade student would act like。 Once again, another Korman book I will be adding to my library for the students to read。Thank you, NetGalley and HarperCollins Children's Books, for the ARC。 。。。more
