Summary

Laugh-out-loud, deeply insightful, and emotion-filled essays from multi-talented actress, comedian, podcaster, and writer Casey Wilson。 Casey Wilson has a lot on her mind and she isn't afraid to share。 In this dazzling collection of essays, skillfully constructed and brimming with emotion, she shares her thoughts on the joys and vagaries of modern-day womanhood and motherhood, introduces the not-quite-typical family that made her who she is, and persuasively argues that lowbrow pop culture is the perfect lens through which to understand human nature。

Whether she's extolling the virtues of eating in bed, processing the humiliation over her father's late in life perm, or exploring her pathological need to be liked, Casey is witty, candid, and full of poignant and funny surprises。 Humorous dives into her obsessions and areas of personal expertise--Scientology and self-help, nice guys, reality television shows--are matched by touching meditations on female friendship, grief, motherhood, and identity。

Reading The Wreckage of My Presence is like spending time with a close friend--a deeply passionate, full-tilt, joyous, excessive, compulsive, shameless, hungry-for-it-all, loyal, cheerleading friend。 A friend who is ready for any big feeling that comes her way and isn't afraid to embrace it。

Laugh out loud hilarious and touching from beginning to endI knew this book would be funny because I love the author’s work。 I didn’t expect to cry actual emotions。 Such a great message about just making it through as a woman。 Highly recommend。

This is best enjoyed in audiobook form, of course—Casey Wilson is a naturally hilarious raconteur。 As with many memoirs or essay collections by comedic writers, there is a slight dip near the middle, yes。 But overall, this is a wonderful book full of genuine laughs, and moving musings about the body, grief, motherhood, and The Real Housewives!

(Audio version) I know I say this a lot, but I feel like I’d be best friends with Casey after listening to this book。 And for Happy Endings fans, the chapter about her experience on the show is worth the read on its own。 While this book is full of laughs, it’s also a sweet and endearing look at grief, parenthood, friendship, postpartum depression, rage at the patriarchy, and what it means to be the “uncool” girl in Hollywood。

Lauren

I wish she would have told more stories she hadn’t already told on Bitch Sesh, but God are they still as funny as ever。 I was also moved by the more poignant essays about her mother。 Overall, this was an absolutely enjoyable read。 Here’s to hoping Casey has another book in her!

Got this from the library and read in one day。 Be forewarned, going in - a lot of these essays deal with grief。 That's okay by me, just saying。I loved Happy Endings (yes, I'm part of THAT group) and I love Bitch Sesh and I just generally like Casey。 I like her even more after reading this。 If I could say one thing to her it would be: Casey, you are not alone。 Many others have turned to the Real Housewives franchise to help them deal with crippling grief or anxiety。 It's good for what ails us!So Got this from the library and read in one day。 Be forewarned, going in - a lot of these essays deal with grief。 That's okay by me, just saying。I loved Happy Endings (yes, I'm part of THAT group) and I love Bitch Sesh and I just generally like Casey。 I like her even more after reading this。 If I could say one thing to her it would be: Casey, you are not alone。 Many others have turned to the Real Housewives franchise to help them deal with crippling grief or anxiety。 It's good for what ails us!So now you know。。。I'm part of THAT group, too。Just a lovely, funny, sad, real read。 Highly recommended。 。。。more

I devoured this audiobook! Wish I could give it more than 5 stars。 This was hilarious, sweet, heartfelt, and smart。 I will read it in print and probably listen to it again too!

Big Casey Wilson fan! I have followed her on Insta for awhile and think she's so funny and "real。" This collection of essays is both touching and funny。 There's a lot of talk about grief, parenting, motherhood, finding success that I think is really relatable even if you're not a Hollywood actress or fan of The Real Housewives。 The audio is well done and read by Casey。 Need to figure out how to befriend Casey and June now。。。 Big Casey Wilson fan! I both snort-laughed and wept while reading this essay collection and can’t pay a book a higher compliment than that

Up front - I've not watched Happy Endings nor have I listened to Wilson's podcast but I'm cueing up both right now。 What a hoot。 This collection of essays made me smile, which is something we can all use these days。 It's poignant (her mom's funeral) and it's educational (her tv show) 。 She's turned the spotlight on her family (love her dad) and herself and keeps a good balance with the humor。 Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC。 Keep this one to read an essay at a time。 I'm betting that as much as I Up front - I've not watched Happy Endings nor have I listened to Wilson's podcast but I'm cueing up both right now。 What a hoot。 This collection of essays made me smile, which is something we can all use these days。 It's poignant (her mom's funeral) and it's educational (her tv show) 。 She's turned the spotlight on her family (love her dad) and herself and keeps a good balance with the humor。 Thanks to Edelweiss for the ARC。 Keep this one to read an essay at a time。 I'm betting that as much as I enjoyed it on paper, the audiobook will be even better。 。。。more

I enjoy memoirs of actors/performers that I’m a fan of because while I’m not super into celeb gossip or prying into the lives of people I have no right to, I do feel closer to those who choose to share their messy, beautiful selves with curious readers。 Her conversation with Louie Anderson made me emotional, and I appreciated the bigger theme of her struggling with the loss of her mother。 But I also laughed out loud many times, like she could be a friend of mine。 The Happy Endings chapter。 My he I enjoy memoirs of actors/performers that I’m a fan of because while I’m not super into celeb gossip or prying into the lives of people I have no right to, I do feel closer to those who choose to share their messy, beautiful selves with curious readers。 Her conversation with Louie Anderson made me emotional, and I appreciated the bigger theme of her struggling with the loss of her mother。 But I also laughed out loud many times, like she could be a friend of mine。 The Happy Endings chapter。 My heart。 (My Hartz?) Bless her for including Penny’s iconic mini-rant about taking a whore’s bath in an Au Bon Pain, which remains one of the funniest line deliveries of anything I’ve ever heard, ever。 My only hesitation in recommending memoirs stems from the assumption that unless someone already knows who the person is, I don’t think they would be interested in the book as a whole。 But that will never stop me from talking about how much I love and admire her。Thanks, NetGalley! 。。。more

This book was vulnerable and hilarious, most of the time。 It was an enjoyable read, but I found myself feeling like I was reviewing the script for a comedy show。 I would’ve enjoyed it more on screen or live。 I liked it enough that I am going to watch her show Happy Endings。 It is a very quick read, finished it from morning to early afternoon!

So funny, so tender。。。 “Love you, Kathy!” 🥺🥺🥺🥺🥺

Essay collections are not usually my preferred genre, but I really loved this one by a favorite comedic actress, Casey Wilson。 The essay on her show Happy Endings alone was worth the read。 I absolutely love that show and still watch it over and over。 The fact that it was canceled after only three seasons is a tragedy。 The essay It Doesn't Do had me howling with laughter。 I love Wilson's comedic style and sensibility, so I found this collection to be an absolute triumph。I received this book as a Essay collections are not usually my preferred genre, but I really loved this one by a favorite comedic actress, Casey Wilson。 The essay on her show Happy Endings alone was worth the read。 I absolutely love that show and still watch it over and over。 The fact that it was canceled after only three seasons is a tragedy。 The essay It Doesn't Do had me howling with laughter。 I love Wilson's comedic style and sensibility, so I found this collection to be an absolute triumph。I received this book as a Goodreads giveaway。 。。。more

A book of essays written by someone who is honestly so funny and talented it might be illegal?Sign me up!This certainly isn’t a bad book, just underwhelming。 I just wish this book was as delightful and effervescent as Casey Wilson herself。Thanks to Goodreads FirstReads and Harper Collins for the arc! Casey Wilson is incredibly funny, smart, witty, and charming。 I love her collection of essays about her life and could literally hear her as I read The Wreckage of My Presence。 I’ve been a huge fan of her (Happy Endings, Bitch Sesh, etc。) and have admired her so much。 Casey’s stories come off so honest and personal which is hammered home in the last essay。

This book is a gorgeous, heartfelt, and brilliantly funny collection of essays that had me alternatively in tears of joy and sadness (and a couple of genuine laugh out loud moments)。 If you are a human living on planet earth, run don’t walk to order this! It comes out May 4th which is the same day the Real Housewives of New York City premiers and that is NO ACCIDENT! Thanks to HarperCollins for the advanced copy。

I laughed until I cried and then cried straight up。 Casey Wilson is an absolute treasure。 I first saw her in Happy Endings and loved that she dedicated a chapter of this book to that period in her life。 It should have gotten the same reception that Schitts Creek did! And I will forever be thinking about the man who farted at her mother's grave and then cried the whole way home。 I laughed until I cried and then cried straight up。 Casey Wilson is an absolute treasure。 I first saw her in Happy Endings and loved that she dedicated a chapter of this book to that period in her life。 It should have gotten the same reception that Schitts Creek did! I have been craving a book that dealt with this new normal of life since the Covid-19 outbreak, but also wanted something familiar and light。 Wilson’s book hit the perfect spot for me! I've been having a hard time getting into fiction lately, so as soon as I got a copy of this from Edelweiss, I decided to start it immediately。 I'm so glad I did。 It was absolutely hilarious and exactly what I needed。 I've been listening to Casey Wilson's podcast Bitch Sesh for years and have always thought she was so interesting and hilarious, so I was so excited when I heard she had written a book。 For once, I was not disappointed and in fact my expectations were completely surpassed。 It's bot I've been having a hard time getting into fiction lately, so as soon as I got a copy of this from Edelweiss, I decided to start it immediately。 I'm so glad I did。 It was absolutely hilarious and exactly what I needed。 I've been listening to Casey Wilson's podcast Bitch Sesh for years and have always thought she was so interesting and hilarious, so I was so excited when I heard she had written a book。 For once, I was not disappointed and in fact my expectations were completely surpassed。 It's both laugh out loud funny AND poignant and touching。 Her family is absolutely nuts (and I mean this in the best possible way), and they actually reminded me of David Sedaris's family。 Highly, highly, highly recommended!Thank you to Harper and Edelweiss for the advance copy。 。。。more

Perfect。 Even better than I imagined。 I laughed, I cried。 I can’t wait to listen to the audiobook when it’s ready, because I will reread this as much as possible。

Received an ARC in exchange for an honest review。 I’ve been waiting for Wilson to drop a book since her Lenny article about anger in 2016。 It was as vulnerable and hilarious as I’d hoped it would be。 It is a love letter to her mother, and the mother she is becoming, and the Real Housewives franchise。 Made me want to dive into Happy Endings all over again!

Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review。I have had a few issues with some of the things Casey has said on the Bitch Sesh podcast (though I love Danielle!), but wanted to read this anyway for the Housewives stuff。 I went in expecting to walk away disliking Casey。 But god dammit if this wasn’t a delightful, relatable, heartbreaking read。 I rarely literally LOL when reading, and this book had me doing it several times。 Though it was mostly fun and funny, th Thanks to NetGalley for allowing me to read this in exchange for an honest review。I have had a few issues with some of the things Casey has said on the Bitch Sesh podcast (though I love Danielle!), but wanted to read this anyway for the Housewives stuff。 I went in expecting to walk away disliking Casey。 But god dammit if this wasn’t a delightful, relatable, heartbreaking read。 I rarely literally LOL when reading, and this book had me doing it several times。 Though it was mostly fun and funny, there were a couple of chapters that were just heart wrenching。 I had heard a few of the stories included on the podcast but enjoyed revisiting them here。 The writing was ALL Casey, no ghostwriter needed, and on the page her tone came off wittier, smarter, and just。。。better? than it does on the podcast。 Dare I say it was one of the best collections of essays I’ve ever read? And I’ve read a lot。 I will be rereading at some point。 4。5/5 stars, rounded up to 5。 。。。more
