Summary

Elephants are gray。 Pigs are pink。 Only the chameleon has no color of his own。 He is purple like the heather, yellow like a lemon, even black and orange striped like a tiger! Then one day a chameleon has an idea to remain one color forever by staying on the greenest leaf he can find。 But in the autumn, the leaf changes from green to yellow to red 。 。 。 and so does the chameleon。 When another chameleon suggests they travel together, he learns that companionship is more important than having a color of his own。 No matter where he goes with his new friend, they will always be alike。

Colorful illustrations and spare prose make this story of friendship perfect for a board book edition to introduce simple color concepts to toddlers。

We loved Swimmy, so I was excited to find this book by the same author/illustrator。 This one is about a lonely chameleon with a slight identity crisis (he doesn’t want to keep changing colors) until he finds a fellow chameleon to go through the changes with him。 Creative, silly, and endearing。 Also a great way to work on color recognition。 *Borrowed from my mother-in-law’s collection of children’s books

The art in this is so pretty, and I started out liking the plot - a chameleon who is frustrated because he takes on the color of whatever his surroundings are, rather than having his own color。 But the ending wasn't my favorite - he finds another chameleon and everything is okay because they are the same when they stay together。 It could be interpreted a couple of ways, but I found it discouraging of being with others who may look different than you。 I didn't hate it, because everyone knows that The art in this is so pretty, and I started out liking the plot - a chameleon who is frustrated because he takes on the color of whatever his surroundings are, rather than having his own color。 But the ending wasn't my favorite - he finds another chameleon and everything is okay because they are the same when they stay together。 It could be interpreted a couple of ways, but I found it discouraging of being with others who may look different than you。 I didn't hate it, because everyone knows that feeling like you belong is important, but I didn't love the idea that being the same as your person is what will make you happy。 。。。more

Figuring out who you are is never an easy task and most often takes a lifetime to understand completely。 This one chameleon attempts several times to be various colors until they meet a friend who helps inspire them to be true to themselves。

A color of his own is an informational storybook。 Although not directly stated, it explains how chameleons change colors, as well as identifies the colors of a few other animals。 In the story, we meet an unnamed chameleon who is struggling to figure out what his color is。 Along the way he meets a friend and they decide what color is truly best for them。 I give this book a five star rating because it highlights a few important things for children to hear。 The first important thing is that it is i A color of his own is an informational storybook。 Although not directly stated, it explains how chameleons change colors, as well as identifies the colors of a few other animals。 In the story, we meet an unnamed chameleon who is struggling to figure out what his color is。 Along the way he meets a friend and they decide what color is truly best for them。 I give this book a five star rating because it highlights a few important things for children to hear。 The first important thing is that it is important to have friends。 The chameleons were able to find comfort within one another while they were going through a stressful time。 Another important stress on this book is that sometimes we might feel like we do not belong, but that isn't true, we just aren't looking in the right place。 I think both of these messages are important for children to hear。 Another important aspect of the book is the color identification that can be used with young children。 These color associations will help a child identify colors in the future。 。。。more

This is a cute little book about chameleons and their ability to change colors。 A chameleon wonders why he will never have a color of his own, like the elephants, tigers, and fish。 He finds a fellow chameleon friend who stays with him and they live forever having the same colored skin as each other。 The illustrations in this book are simple and don't have a lot of color going on in the pages。 I think this is a great book to teach children about chameleons, their colors, and different animals。 This is a cute little book about chameleons and their ability to change colors。 A chameleon wonders why he will never have a color of his own, like the elephants, tigers, and fish。 He finds a fellow chameleon friend who stays with him and they live forever having the same colored skin as each other。 The illustrations in this book are simple and don't have a lot of color going on in the pages。 I think this is a great book to teach children about chameleons, their colors, and different animals。 。。。more

This book is about a chameleon that is more worried about having a never changing color。 But it learns that companionship is more important than have a color like other animals。 The illustrations were colorful, vibrant, and fun。 The tone I heard as I read was sad, explorative, and then happy towards the end。

This story shows that everyone has a so-called color that defines them, except for a chameleon who doesn't know what color he is。 he goes in search of the color of his own, but as a leaf changes so do the chameleon, until a leaf falls and he meets another like himself, and together they change wherever they go and enjoy that they are not alone。 Reading this book gave a sense of true friendship and finding a sense of independence。 it shows that friendship will come when it is most needed and will This story shows that everyone has a so-called color that defines them, except for a chameleon who doesn't know what color he is。 he goes in search of the color of his own, but as a leaf changes so do the chameleon, until a leaf falls and he meets another like himself, and together they change wherever they go and enjoy that they are not alone。 Reading this book gave a sense of true friendship and finding a sense of independence。 it shows that friendship will come when it is most needed and will last forever。 。。。more

This book is so cute。 I really enjoyed the art style of the illustrations。 The colors pop off of the page and the chameleon truly blends into the background。 Each image is like a little scavenger hunt to try to find the chameleon。 The plot is so relatable and interesting and the ending makes you smile。 I would definitely recommend this book for young children。

All the other animals have a color of their own, but one little chameleon does not。 He learns to accept himself when he finds someone else like him。

An older book so maybe I'm being too critical, but I don't like the idea of teaching young they need to find someone in their similar peer group to be able to accept themselves/find belonging。 I also don't appreciate how all the animal groups are mistakenly lumped together by stating "All animals had a color of their own。。。", while in fact not all "pigs are pink" or "parrots are green。” Such oversimplification could carry the message that only the chameleon felt left out, when there were certain An older book so maybe I'm being too critical, but I don't like the idea of teaching young they need to find someone in their similar peer group to be able to accept themselves/find belonging。 I also don't appreciate how all the animal groups are mistakenly lumped together by stating "All animals had a color of their own。。。", while in fact not all "pigs are pink" or "parrots are green。” Such oversimplification could carry the message that only the chameleon felt left out, when there were certainly gray pigs or blue parrots who also felt different。 Perhaps meeting one of them could have helped Chameleon before meeting someone in his similar reptile group to help him feel better。 However maybe read this book and discuss those matters with children as they get older? Teach those kiddos some critical thinking that life is not as simple as a children’s book can make it out to be。 。。。more

This short children's book details finding your own unique attributions, which are set apart from others, but all at once being similar to others around you-which is a great lesson for young children to keep in mind as they grow! While the chameleon felt it couldn't relate to others around it maintaining one consistent color year round, it eventually found an alike chameleon whom they shared the ever-changing experiences with。 The book is simple, yet interesting for little hands。 This short children's book details finding your own unique attributions, which are set apart from others, but all at once being similar to others around you-which is a great lesson for young children to keep in mind as they grow! The illustrations are quite beautifulin a way。 Colors are reallybeautiful。I thought the plot--storyline--wasjust OK。 I thought why does itbother him being different colors。Why not just enjoy it。 But the artworkwas really wonderful。I particularly liked the last page。 Redand white mushrooms。 Although obviously not very realistic。Children in general would enjoy this book。

I think this picture book is a unique form of art for young readers with beautiful illustration while showing color-concept to keep young readers interested and engaged。 As a chameleon feels different and alone in a big and colorful world only to discover he finds something more significant than he expected。 Children need to develop visual literacy- the term we use to describe the ability to make sense of images (Young, pg。 38)。 The illustrations by Author and IllustratorA Color of His Own help I think this picture book is a unique form of art for young readers with beautiful illustration while showing color-concept to keep young readers interested and engaged。 As a chameleon feels different and alone in a big and colorful world only to discover he finds something more significant than he expected。 Children need to develop visual literacy- the term we use to describe the ability to make sense of images (Young, pg。 38)。 The illustrations by Author and IllustratorA Color of His Own help capture children's attention and develop appreciation and engages children with color concept as the chameleon finds a color of his own。 "Illustration in picture books is meant to delight, to capture attention, to tell a story or teach a concept, and to develop appreciation and awareness in children (Young, pg。 39)。" I personally enjoy this book because it helps children learn about identity, acceptance, friendship and learning color-concept where readers respond to images。 After reading this book to my son, I printed picture of the chameleon and allowed my child to be creative and chose his favorite color。 I also enjoyed reading and recommend Swimmy about a little black fish that stands out because of his color and bravery。 。。。more
