Summary

In the tradition of the #1 New York Times bestseller The Perfect Storm and the bestselling investigative works of Jon Krakauer, a riveting account of a 1984 tragedy at sea and how the repercussions still haunt the town of Montauk to this day。

In March 1984, the Wind Blown, a commercial fishing boat, left Montauk Harbor on what should have been a routine voyage。 Its four-man crew—two locals, and two sons of the wealthy gentry that make up the Hampton’s tony summer population—had no idea they would soon be facing hurricane-force winds as a Nor’easter put them in a fight for their lives。

Sadly, it was a fight they lost。 Neither the boat nor the bodies were ever recovered。

As the second-worst nautical disaster suffered by a Montauk-based fishing vessel in over a hundred years, the fate of the Wind Blown has become interwoven with the local folklore of the East End’s year-round population。 It has evolved beyond a tragic story of four men lost at sea into a universal tale of family, brotherhood, and what happens when the interests of the affluent and working-class families collide。

With profound insight and unerring respect, journalist Amanda Fairbanks recounts the lead-up to the tragedy and delves into questions that have haunted the community for more than thirty years: What happens to a community’s working class when money—the kind that can buy a twenty million dollar beachfront home, or pay the initiation fee for entry into an elite golf club—takes over? Why does an event more than three decades old remain so vivid in people’s minds? And how does grief alter people’s memories?

Discover a bygone era of Montauk—when it was still possible for fishermen to make an honest living from the sea and before Wall Street and hedge fund money transformed the South Fork into a paradise for those who can afford it, and a lifelong struggle for those who cannot。 Captivating and powerful, The Lost Boys of Montauk explores one of the most important questions we face as humans: how do memories of the dead inform the lives of those left behind?

What a fabulous, unforgettable book。 Fairbanks is a masterful storyteller, combining a novelist's sense of poetry and suspense with an investigative reporter's clear-eyed quest for the truth。 Propulsive and moving, The Lost Boys of Montauk recaptures a lost bohemian era in what is now one of the ritziest areas on eastern Long Island。 Fairbanks details a fascinating collision of social classes in the early '80s: Rich kid Dave Connick grew up on Park Avenue and defies his wealthy parents, trading What a fabulous, unforgettable book。 Fairbanks is a masterful storyteller, combining a novelist's sense of poetry and suspense with an investigative reporter's clear-eyed quest for the truth。 Propulsive and moving, The Lost Boys of Montauk recaptures a lost bohemian era in what is now one of the ritziest areas on eastern Long Island。 Fairbanks details a fascinating collision of social classes in the early '80s: Rich kid Dave Connick grew up on Park Avenue and defies his wealthy parents, trading Wall Street for a South Fork fisherman's life。 He joins an adventurous crew on the Wind Blown。 The vessel's fishermen come from all walks of life and represent the divide between the moneyed, May-September city people and the middle-class residents who stay in town all year round。 But each is united by a deep and abiding love of the sea, and each is haunted by an imperfect father。 Their stories will stay with you forever。 。。。more

For some of us, the lure of the ocean is something that gives us immense joy, fulfillment and a sense of identity。 With all that it can give, however, it can take in an instant。 Amanda Fairbanks gives a comprehensive well-researched look into the connection these men felt for the ocean, their motivations to keep going back for more & the lives they left incomplete back on shore。

This one didn't do it for me。 I wanted to like this one。 I feel bad that 4 men lost their lives and were never found and their family still mourns them。 The author is trying to keep these men alive even just in memory with her book and that is commendable。However, there were frequently too many TMIs, and maybe I'm not a man so maybe they're wired differently, but personally if I had died I would not want someone writing about the age I lost my virginity and whether or not I have sex while on my This one didn't do it for me。 I wanted to like this one。 I feel bad that 4 men lost their lives and were never found and their family still mourns them。 The author is trying to keep these men alive even just in memory with her book and that is commendable。However, there were frequently too many TMIs, and maybe I'm not a man so maybe they're wired differently, but personally if I had died I would not want someone writing about the age I lost my virginity and whether or not I have sex while on my period。The book is super disjointed。 The first part is called "before", but jumps around in time even in that section, and then focuses on two of the men, then "after", then more of the men and its just so all over the place that I could feel my eyes glazing over。 Each chapter jumps around in time and it just didn't seem coherent。I can't recommend unless maybe you're really really into fishing and fishermen? Also why are there so many 5 star reviews of this book where the people only liked this one book? 。。。more

2。5 stars! The publisher was nice enough to reach out to me with a free copy of this book。 The author definitely did a lot of research into the various histories of the families involved but I didn’t feel like I got to know the four men themselves enough。 It was a little too long and drawn out as well。

Received as an ARC from the publisher。 Started 3-29-21。 Finished 4-2-21。 Well-researched, compelling true story of 4 young fishermen killed when their boat sank in a storm near Montauk Harbor in March 1984。 Although there have been other books about boat sinkings, this one is a psychosocial examination of the relationships among these young men, their families and their neighbors。 It also explores the local residents and the wealthy New York City vacationers to this East End of Long Island。 The Received as an ARC from the publisher。 Started 3-29-21。 Finished 4-2-21。 Well-researched, compelling true story of 4 young fishermen killed when their boat sank in a storm near Montauk Harbor in March 1984。 Although there have been other books about boat sinkings, this one is a psychosocial examination of the relationships among these young men, their families and their neighbors。 It also explores the local residents and the wealthy New York City vacationers to this East End of Long Island。 The risks of this dangerous profession of fishing are the attraction that draw men sometimes to their doom。 This book , unlike other similar ones, also tells the follow-up of the surviving family members covering decades after the sinking。 Totally unique。 Hard to put down。 。。。more

I read this book in three quick sessions and found it very informative in regards to the social and fishing culture of Montauk。 I live in a coastal fishing community in Point Judith, Rhode Island, and I’m, sadly, all too familiar with the danger that fishermen face。 This well researched book was structured in a clever way。 The author, Amanda Fairbanks, tells us of the loss of a boat and her crew in the exposition of her story, and then works backwards to explain who these men were。 Moreover she I read this book in three quick sessions and found it very informative in regards to the social and fishing culture of Montauk。 I live in a coastal fishing community in Point Judith, Rhode Island, and I’m, sadly, all too familiar with the danger that fishermen face。 This well researched book was structured in a clever way。 The author, Amanda Fairbanks, tells us of the loss of a boat and her crew in the exposition of her story, and then works backwards to explain who these men were。 Moreover she describes the demography and geography of Montauk in strong visceral detail。 Finally, this book shows how these men are not simply names on a memorial; their humanity as well as their kin’s humanity is now embedded in Montauk’s maritime tradition and lore。 Read this one。 。。。more

Amanda Fairbanks does a brilliant job of telling a nonfictional story in a beautiful and creative way。 Not only does she educate the reader about the Hamptons and commercial fishing in the 1980s, she also resuscitates the complex and compelling characters who are part of this important story。 I recognized parts of myself in all these characters, and they have stayed with me long after I finished the book。 Do yourself a favor, and buy this book。 You won't be able to put it down。 Amanda Fairbanks does a brilliant job of telling a nonfictional story in a beautiful and creative way。 Not only does she educate the reader about the Hamptons and commercial fishing in the 1980s, she also resuscitates the complex and compelling characters who are part of this important story。 I recognized parts of myself in all these characters, and they have stayed with me long after I finished the book。 Do yourself a favor, and buy this book。 You won't be able to put it down。 。。。more

There were parts of this story that were gripping and raw。 The first few chapters were breathtaking at times, building dread and melancholy。Then things come to a grinding halt in the middle。 The cast of characters grows to an unmanageable number as we meet not just the four men who went down with the Wind Blown but their extended families, partners, and friends。 The attention to detail is admirable but impractical; the pacing suffers for it。 (There's also an entire section that you can skip on t There were parts of this story that were gripping and raw。 The first few chapters were breathtaking at times, building dread and melancholy。Then things come to a grinding halt in the middle。 The cast of characters grows to an unmanageable number as we meet not just the four men who went down with the Wind Blown but their extended families, partners, and friends。 The attention to detail is admirable but impractical; the pacing suffers for it。 (There's also an entire section that you can skip on the history of Montauk and tilefishing。)Things pick up again in the final third, ending on an emotional note。 That middle section dragged my whole reading experience down, though。 。。。more

Want to travel back to a place that’s almost gone and learn about an incredibly compelling story? This is the book to read。 Montauk had long been a quiet fishing village far away from so much of New York City’s bustle。 There are so many stories of surfers, fishermen and local characters and the author captures them - and weaves them together- beautifully。 I hope everyone reads this book and these stories are preserved and learned and held in hearts。

If you think you know the Hamptons, think again。 This book opens up worlds that many of us never see up close。 Rarely do we see so many sides of an American community, one that comes together as it is ripped apart by a tragedy that won’t fade away。 A craft, fishing, that is as old as man, becomes a thread for the author to weave a timeless tale of grief, love, and resilience。

A fantastic, gripping book about the intersecting lives of some young men from the Hamptons, some of whom were sons of privilege, and others of whom were local boys 。 They became surfers and fisherman and tried to prove themselves in the dangerous deep sea fishing trade and were lost in a monstrous storm。 They left behind some loves and some secrets。 But I wont spoil the book。 Very touching story and great history of the Hamptons and the fishing trade。 A great summer or anytime read。
