What a life, what an icon! I very much enjoyed listening to Cicely's stories read by her。 She blazed trails for Black women, not just in acting, but in education and activism。 She always conducted herself with grace and dignity。 What a life, what an icon! Ms。 Tyson finished this book shortly before she died at age 96, as she makes reference in this memoir to being 96。 Excellent audiobook even though it mainly read by Robin Miles。 It would be a bit much to expect a 96-year-old woman to be the narrator! Ms。 Tyson had an amazing life, well worth learning much more about。 Hearing or reading her story only added to my admiration for her。

I listened to the audio book but was a little disappointed because Miss Tyson reads only the introduction。 Viola Davis reads the Prologue, and Tobin Miles, who does an excellent narration, reads the rest。 It’s a fine reading of a remarkable memoir。 I knew Miss T was a ground-breaker, but her life was also bolstered with intense spirituality, healthy eating and living, mindfulness, and unconditional love of family and friends。 This will be a highlight of my reading for 2021。

This is quite the book! It spanned over nine decades of her life。 Her ups and downs。 The ending wasso profound!

From page 1 to 399, this book is as mesmerizing as Ms。 Cicely Tyson's performances。 I felt like a junkie, couldn't wait to sit back down to read and get another fix of her wisdom, straight talk, insights, and life stories that ran the gamut from horrifying to beyond fabulous。 I'm still feeling an undercurrent of depression since finishing, like she's passed on all over again。I can remember so vividly every character I've ever seen her portray。 Many times, I would have to wait to watch the credit From page 1 to 399, this book is as mesmerizing as Ms。 Cicely Tyson's performances。 I felt like a junkie, couldn't wait to sit back down to read and get another fix of her wisdom, straight talk, insights, and life stories that ran the gamut from horrifying to beyond fabulous。 I'm still feeling an undercurrent of depression since finishing, like she's passed on all over again。I can remember so vividly every character I've ever seen her portray。 Many times, I would have to wait to watch the credits to make sure it was her, so immersed was she in the characters that Ms。 Tyson as the actor ceased to exist。 Because of this, I am grateful beyond words to have this book and get to know the Cicely Tyson behind the characters, as much as she was willing to share of herself。 And it felt like a bounty, like her legacy of brilliant performances and dignity and grace and badass and now life lessons from her multitude of deeply-lived years。 Thank you, Ms。 Cicely! 。。。more

This is a glorious read—heart-wrenching, funny, and full of the pathos and personality that just oozes out of the woman when you see her perform。 Memoirs are meant to teach your about a person, but such has been Cicely Tyson's life of overcoming barriers and long odds, and uplifting the culture, that her life story is the story of a country too。 She, working with a co-writer, weaved the narrative of her life with that of America in the 20th century。 And what we get is not just the anecdotes that This is a glorious read—heart-wrenching, funny, and full of the pathos and personality that just oozes out of the woman when you see her perform。 Memoirs are meant to teach your about a person, but such has been Cicely Tyson's life of overcoming barriers and long odds, and uplifting the culture, that her life story is the story of a country too。 She, working with a co-writer, weaved the narrative of her life with that of America in the 20th century。 And what we get is not just the anecdotes that make up an interesting life, but a purposeful journey through history。 Not just an understanding of the historical context that shaped her, but its evolution as she and other ground-breaking African-American artists (including the love of her life, Miles Davis) shaped the context。 Tyson's voice comes through, clearly and joyfully, and tells her tale with skill。 The pace slows only toward the final chapters, which become a listing out of the well-earned honors she received in the final years of her life, but the emotions run high from start to finish。 Reading this book is time well spent。 。。。more

I have always been in awe of Ms。 Cicely Tyson ever sense I saw her play Miss Jane Pittman。 Her presence in this world was truly a gift to the African-American community before she shared her story with the world。 Now, after reading about her accomplishments, heartaches, blessings, and imperfections I have no doubt that her legacy will inspire and breath life into so many people the world over。 This book is a must read! Tyson was a fascinating woman and it is hard analyzing response to the book itself instead of a response to her。 With all of the accolades, I thought she had done more pivotal roles but she is really known for a just a few and most of those came either very early in or at the end of her career。 Although the childhood section was interesting, it went on too long。 Which meant some areas of her adult life and career were glossed over。 Some editing was in order - I don't need to know which subway li Tyson was a fascinating woman and it is hard analyzing response to the book itself instead of a response to her。 With all of the accolades, I thought she had done more pivotal roles but she is really known for a just a few and most of those came either very early in or at the end of her career。 Although the childhood section was interesting, it went on too long。 Which meant some areas of her adult life and career were glossed over。 Some editing was in order - I don't need to know which subway lines she took to get places。 The commentary on civil rights was a little preachy at times but that may have been the cowriter。 And you have to give her credit for acknowledging the co-writer; many celebrities don't。 She totally ignores the controversy with Bill Cosby, which I thought was odd given that she recounts the times she was subject to sexual harassments and attempted rape。 。。。more

This was a wonderful book to read。 I felt like I was listening to a girlfriend。 Many of the stories were relatable to me。 It didn't feel like I was reading a story about someone famous and yet she is。 You should read it。 This was a wonderful book to read。 I felt like I was listening to a girlfriend。 Many of the stories were relatable to me。 It didn't feel like I was reading a story about someone famous and yet she is。 You should read it。 。。。more

This book sings every note possible。 Cicely Tyson lived an extraordinary life。 This autobiography most have been the last thing she needed to accomplish before God took her home。 It is the perfect read for RIGHT NOW。 Yet I do not doubt that it will be read for generations。 It is American history, entertainment history, black history all told in reverence to Tyson’s spiritual and moral beliefs。 Definitely a must read!

What a pleasurable, fast read。 I loved her insistence on eating vegetables, inability to keep away from miles Davis no matter how much he cheated on her and how many drugs he did, and she didn’t take nothing from nobody。 She conveys strength out to everyone。

An in-depth look into the very personal, professional, and spiritual life of a award winning actress。 As always, listened to it on audio。 At times it got a little lengthy, and not wanting to ditch the book, I listened to it at 1。5 speed。 😜

Beautiful story of a true icon! I learned so much about someone I grew up watching and thought I “knew。” She lived such a full and interesting life。

What can I say about this phenomenal woman that hasn't been said already。 I am so grateful that she agreed to share herself, her story with the world before God called her her home。 It was like gaining wisdom from an elder, laughing and crying with a dear friend。 RIP Miss Tyson。 What can I say about this phenomenal woman that hasn't been said already。 I am so grateful that she agreed to share herself, her story with the world before God called her her home。 It was like gaining wisdom from an elder, laughing and crying with a dear friend。 RIP Miss Tyson。 。。。more

Ms。 Tyson writes her story with humor and grace。 I have always thought of her as an actress that you see in the “more dignified movies” and “ the movies about black people struggles in America”。I am a black American woman in my 60’s and I can relate to some of the “ black situations in America” that she writes about, but after finishing Just As I Am, I feel as though I am a newborn baby and I know nothing of the “ real black situations in America”。 And she did not write a bitter, finger pointing Ms。 Tyson writes her story with humor and grace。 I have always thought of her as an actress that you see in the “more dignified movies” and “ the movies about black people struggles in America”。I am a black American woman in my 60’s and I can relate to some of the “ black situations in America” that she writes about, but after finishing Just As I Am, I feel as though I am a newborn baby and I know nothing of the “ real black situations in America”。 And she did not write a bitter, finger pointing book。 It has plenty of old fashioned “ this is your mama talking advice” weaved inbetween the lines。An autobiography that anyone, male or female, any race would find enjoyable。C Dennis 。。。more

Too bad she waited until age 96 to write her autobiography。 She's a little too rambling and preachy。 In several instances, she admits to not remembering names, etc。 I did enjoy learning a lot about her life。 Would have loved photos。 Too bad she waited until age 96 to write her autobiography。 She's a little too rambling and preachy。 In several instances, she admits to not remembering names, etc。 I did enjoy learning a lot about her life。 Would have loved photos。 。。。more
