Summary

Perfect for fans of The Crown, this captivating biography from a New York Times bestselling author follows Queen Elizabeth II and her sister Margaret as they navigate life in the royal spotlight。They were the closest of sisters and the best of friends。 But when, in a quixotic twist of fate, their uncle Edward Vlll decided to abdicate the throne, the dynamic between Elizabeth and Margaret was dramatically altered。 Forever more Margaret would have to curtsey to the sister she called 'Lillibet。' And bow to her wishes。Elizabeth would always look upon her younger sister's antics with a kind of stoical amusement, but Margaret's struggle to find a place and position inside the royal system--and her fraught relationship with its expectations--was often a source of tension。 Famously, the Queen had to inform Margaret that the Church and government would not countenance her marrying a divorcee, Group Captain Peter Townsend, forcing Margaret to choose between keeping her title and royal allowances or her divorcee lover。From the idyll of their cloistered early life, through their hidden war-time lives, into the divergent paths they took following their father's death and Elizabeth's ascension to the throne, this book explores their relationship over the years。 Andrew Morton's latest biography offers unique insight into these two drastically different sisters--one resigned to duty and responsibility, the other resistant to it--and the lasting impact they have had on the Crown, the royal family, and the ways it adapted to the changing mores of the 20th century。

This deep dive into the complicated lives and relationship of the Queen of England and her sister sheds light on a subject that hasn't been sufficiently explored before。 Anyone who is intrigued by they have been portrayed on The Crown will get a much more complete and accurate picture of who they were/are by reading this book。 Having read Morton's famous work, Diana: Her True Story, last year, I expected great things from Elizabeth and Margaret and I wasn't disappointed。 This deep dive into the complicated lives and relationship of the Queen of England and her sister sheds light on a subject that hasn't been sufficiently explored before。 Anyone who is intrigued by they have been portrayed on The Crown will get a much more complete and accurate picture of who they were/are by reading this book。 Having read Morton's famous work, Diana: Her True Story, last year, I expected great things from Elizabeth and Margaret and I wasn't disappointed。 。。。more

An interesting, in-depth look at the royal sisters。 Although it gets extremely repetitive at times and doesn't follow a consistent timeline, it is a good choice for lovers of "The Crown" TV show, and those interested in a family whose lives are like no others in the world。 An interesting, in-depth look at the royal sisters。 Although it gets extremely repetitive at times and doesn't follow a consistent timeline, it is a good choice for lovers of "The Crown" TV show, and those interested in a family whose lives are like no others in the world。 。。。more

I’m RULL curious about Andrew Morton now after reading this; he’s telling some events differently than anything else I’ve read about them, and it’s pretty pro-Liz to me (does he think she’s at the ready to be besties with him after the Diana book? methinks not)。 But this is readable like a novel, sincere without being sensational, and just detailed enough that you feel like you’ve gotten some backstory without being a too-tiring deep dive。

This was an enjoyable read。 And unlike many other books about the Windsors, this one is not gossipy or mean。 Though it does relate some interesting stories。And it does point to the differences in personality between Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth, who were very different right from childhood。 Elizabeth seems to have been content or accepting, at least, and maybe even happy with her role in life while Margaret seems to have always been unhappy or depressed with her position。 And maybe even This was an enjoyable read。 And unlike many other books about the Windsors, this one is not gossipy or mean。 Though it does relate some interesting stories。And it does point to the differences in personality between Princess Margaret and Queen Elizabeth, who were very different right from childhood。 Elizabeth seems to have been content or accepting, at least, and maybe even happy with her role in life while Margaret seems to have always been unhappy or depressed with her position。 And maybe even jealous at times of what her sister had。 For most of her life, she was her sister's stanch defender yet by some of her actions Margaret caused a lot of trouble for the Queen。 What this book did provide was a look at royal life from two very different points of view by two very strong-minded but different women。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading this book however it felt more like an extended copy of hello magazine。 Many of the quotes were from anonymous courtiers, making the reader question the true intimacy of this story。 Having said that, the author did create an interesting image of the queen and her sister。 It was enjoyable to read, even though the content should be taken with a grain of salt。

I loved this book。 I was surprised because this is the same author that wrote Diana: her story。 He was respectful to the Queen and Princess Margaret with out being sappy or clingy。 The book is very heavy on Princess Margaret than the Queen but that is kind of expected。 The Queen is a very simple lady and I'm sure will hear more about her when she leaves this earth but I really doubt it would be all that salacious。 She's a simple country girl at heart; is shy and loves her horses and dogs。 The Pr I loved this book。 I was surprised because this is the same author that wrote Diana: her story。 He was respectful to the Queen and Princess Margaret with out being sappy or clingy。 The book is very heavy on Princess Margaret than the Queen but that is kind of expected。 The Queen is a very simple lady and I'm sure will hear more about her when she leaves this earth but I really doubt it would be all that salacious。 She's a simple country girl at heart; is shy and loves her horses and dogs。 The Princess on the other hand was the complete opposite。 Its always interesting to see the history of the second child; Princess Victoria was brilliant whereas Prince Albert Edward (King Edward VII) was considered dull and lascivious--he turned out to be a good King。 Prince Edward and George who became George V, David (Edward VIII) and Bertie (George VI), Prince Charles and Princess Anne。。it will be interesting to see how Charles fares (I think he'll be fine) and William and Harry--George and Charlotte。 The spare is usually indulged, spoiled that was the case with Elizabeth and Margaret。 Margaret comes across in the media as a do nothing but she worked so hard for the crown。 Elizabeth was not just her sister but her boss as well。 She did have a very sad romantic life but again Morton presented it so she was not a victim of being royal so much as a victim of being the younger sister。 I get that cause I'm the youngest in my family and they forget that I have stuff too, I'm not that little kid who had temper tantrums or whatever。 She was similar to Princess Diana and in fact gave her some help and guidance。 We forget that the previous Royals opened a lot of door for the new younger generation and I'm so glad that Morton showed that and respected that 。Sorry this is a long one but I am such an armchair history buff and its refreshing to read about the characters and not the gossip。 I do recommend a read of this book。 I wouldn't call this the greatest biography but it was good and respectful 。。。more

I read Anne Glenconner's Lady In Waiting, about Princess Margaret, and so when I saw this book come out I was very interested。 It definitely shows the craziness of "The Firm。" I really do not have much sympathy for those born into royalty and whining about it。 I get that it can be boring and lonely, but you're a freaking princess! What a cold upbringing for them。 Margaret would also leave her children constantly。 Margaret was the first to marry a commoner which I thought was interesting and she started a trend。 Also, 3 of Queen Elizabeth's 4 children have divorced, which I also thought was interesting。 If the Royals would just let people marry for love, much of the aggravation would be avoided。 That's my takeaway。 。。。more

Andrew Morton, a noted biographer of the British royals, delves deeply into the shared histories of England’s Queen and her only sibling, Princess Margaret, in ELIZABETH & MARGARET。 The two were opposites in many ways yet always mindful of one another。They were born in the relatively calm patch following the First World War, and in only a few years moved from being granddaughters to nieces to daughters of the King。 Their father, George IV, assumed the monarchy after the abdication of his brother Andrew Morton, a noted biographer of the British royals, delves deeply into the shared histories of England’s Queen and her only sibling, Princess Margaret, in ELIZABETH & MARGARET。 The two were opposites in many ways yet always mindful of one another。They were born in the relatively calm patch following the First World War, and in only a few years moved from being granddaughters to nieces to daughters of the King。 Their father, George IV, assumed the monarchy after the abdication of his brother, Edward, to marry a divorced woman。 Suddenly the girls’ roles changed: Elizabeth was now first in succession to the throne and had to be treated as such。 Margaret, who had always been more outgoing, had to accede in many areas to her more thoughtful older sister, though the affection between them survived the alteration。Then another war hit, and for most of that time, they were sequestered in Windsor Castle with widely differing routines。 Elizabeth was being taught the responsibilities of a future monarch, while Margaret was treated, rather boringly, as a typical private school student。 Still the two persisted in doing things as sisters --- they made a garden and, befitting Margaret’s dramatic leanings, put on plays to entertain the family。 In their teens, though, Margaret began to realize that “she would play second fiddle to her sister” --- and curtsy to her --- for the rest of their lives。Morton’s book traces the separate skeins of these two complex personalities, who in public always acted in character。 Margaret became a cigarette-smoking bon vivant with many love affairs to her name, while Elizabeth maintained the dignity of the crown and calmly studied the proper etiquette。 After marrying the man of her choice, the handsome and respectable Philip, she would assume her role in office。 Margaret pursued but never managed to marry divorcée Peter Townsend; the complications of the laws of succession to the throne and Elizabeth’s plotting --- sometimes with Margaret’s collusion --- kept the two from tying the knot。 Even after Margaret finally married --- and then divorced --- a commoner, rumors of her indiscretions kept the presses rolling。 But in private, the Queen generally sympathized with her sister, knowing that Margaret was far less self-confident than she appeared to be in front of the paparazzi。Morton has mined related materials before, with his bestselling biography, DIANA: HER TRUE STORY, winning international kudos。 He has gleaned snippets about these two remarkable subjects from private records and insightful insiders。 The dual portrait that emerges is of powerful women who cared for one another as best they could in the roles that fate assigned。 One was a self-contained monarch toeing the line, and the other a frustrated drama queen drawing larger boundaries, each setting new standards for what females could and should aspire to。Reviewed by Barbara Bamberger Scott 。。。more
