Summary

8 hours, 59 minutes

A warm, incisive new novel about the enduring bonds of marriage and friendship from Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney, author of the instant New York Times bestseller The Nest

Flora Mancini has been happily married for more than twenty years。 But everything she thought she knew about herself, her marriage, and her relationship with her best friend, Margot, is upended when she stumbles upon an envelope containing her husband’s wedding ring—the one he claimed he lost one summer when their daughter, Ruby, was five。

Flora and Julian struggled for years, scraping together just enough acting work to raise Ruby in Manhattan and keep Julian’s small theater company—Good Company—afloat。 A move to Los Angeles brought their first real career successes, a chance to breathe easier, and a reunion with Margot, now a bona fide television star。 But has their new life been built on lies? What happened that summer all those years ago? And what happens now

With Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s signature tenderness, humor, and insight, Good Company tells a bighearted story of the lifelong relationships that both wound and heal us。

Sweet story。 Friendships。 Time。 Marriage。 Betrayal。 Forgiveness。 Parenthood。 I enjoyed the theater in the background and how it brought them all together over the course of years of marriage and friendship。

A beautifully written book about relationships and the choices we make。 Wonderful characters。 4 stars because it could be a little slow and drawn out at times。

I enjoyed it but wanted more。 Less flashbacks and more “now” information。 More to the ending。

I think I am going to stop letting celebrities tell me which books I should read next。 Not sure why Jenna Bush Hager would suggest this one, but this one was just not my cup of tea。 The story was just ok, and the characters were just not engaging enough。 Disappointed in this one。

Honestly I had trouble engaging with this book。 It was a bit easier when the characters were young and enthusiastic。 As they aged and life happened, they became less interesting。

I loved The Nest and looked forward to this author’s new book。 It did not disappoint although I liked The Nest better。 (Which is why I gave this 4 stars)。 The jacket description is correct— a story of relationships, marriage, motherhood, and betrayal。 Thought author did a good job with all of the confusion and emotions that the characters had once the secret was out。 Especially liked the wrap up scene。 The most difficult part for the protagonist is that she ‘lost’ her confidants and support syst I loved The Nest and looked forward to this author’s new book。 It did not disappoint although I liked The Nest better。 (Which is why I gave this 4 stars)。 The jacket description is correct— a story of relationships, marriage, motherhood, and betrayal。 Thought author did a good job with all of the confusion and emotions that the characters had once the secret was out。 Especially liked the wrap up scene。 The most difficult part for the protagonist is that she ‘lost’ her confidants and support system— spouse, best friend, and therapist —- once the secret was revealed as they were complicit in the betrayal。 She had to figure out ‘where do I go from here ? ‘ by herself。 。。。more

I listened to “Good Company” by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney narrated by the notable Marin Ireland。 I’ll listen to anything she narrates。 She’s perfection。 And as far as author Sweeney, I’ll read anything she writes。 It’s a perfect combination。In “Good Company”, Sweeney explores marriages, family, female friendships, infidelity, and the crazy theatrical world of actors。 The novel centers mostly around Flora, a woman married for over 20 years, and who has an adorable daughter, Ruby。 Her best friend is I listened to “Good Company” by Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney narrated by the notable Marin Ireland。 I’ll listen to anything she narrates。 She’s perfection。 And as far as author Sweeney, I’ll read anything she writes。 It’s a perfect combination。In “Good Company”, Sweeney explores marriages, family, female friendships, infidelity, and the crazy theatrical world of actors。 The novel centers mostly around Flora, a woman married for over 20 years, and who has an adorable daughter, Ruby。 Her best friend is Margot, who’s she’s known as long as her husband Julian。 All three, Margot, Flora, and Julian were in theatre together in their 20’s。 Margot found her husband, David, while performing in a play at the park in NYC。 David is a pediatric cardiac surgeon; he plays a minimal role in the story。The story opens with Flora finding Julian’s wedding band in a file drawer。 Julian lost his ring over a decade ago, in a lake, according to Julian。 Obviously Julian lied, and Flora begins questioning her marriage。 Unfortunately, Margot has loose ties to the missing ring。 Flora then questions her friendship with Margot, along with all those significant people along Flora and Julian’s marriage。Sweeney is gifted in telling stories of contemporary families。 Ireland’s voice adds to this notable story。 。。。more

Flora and Julian and Margot and David are two perfect bi-coastal couples, and the wives are the best of friends。 Twenty some years later Flora discovers an unsettling truth that belies this beautiful premise。 Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney is a masterful author who crafts such exquisitely detailed backstory, all the characters seem to spring immediately to life。 I have to say I preferred the first half of the book to the second, somehow the minutiae that I loved so much when applied to setting the scen Flora and Julian and Margot and David are two perfect bi-coastal couples, and the wives are the best of friends。 Twenty some years later Flora discovers an unsettling truth that belies this beautiful premise。 Cynthia D'Aprix Sweeney is a masterful author who crafts such exquisitely detailed backstory, all the characters seem to spring immediately to life。 I have to say I preferred the first half of the book to the second, somehow the minutiae that I loved so much when applied to setting the scene in contrast worked to bog down the impending crisis plot, for me。 But the pitch perfect ending more than makes up for that。 。。。more

I honestly thought this book was really boring and I thought it was difficult to get into。 While I understood the characters, I did not connect with them and felt indifferent to them。 This book covers the hardships of two marriages。 I feel like this reminds me of many other books I have read before。 It probably does not help that I have never been married and could not necessarily relate。 Overall I was disappointed considering how hyped up this book was。

Good Company is true to its title。 Not great, not amazing, just “good。 “ I definitely enjoyed Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s first novel, The Nest, a whole lot more。 Here she tackles marriage, friendship and what happens when trust bonds are broken。 How do we forgive? Can we? Do we? Thankfully, Sweeney’s characters are well-developed。 They are real and relatable, which doesn’t surprise me, given her debut novel。 Good Company is no different。 Unfortunately, the world her characters inhabit this time a Good Company is true to its title。 Not great, not amazing, just “good。 “ I definitely enjoyed Cynthia D’Aprix Sweeney’s first novel, The Nest, a whole lot more。 Here she tackles marriage, friendship and what happens when trust bonds are broken。 How do we forgive? This book surprised me, I was expecting a simple beach read with some basic character development, it was well written and thoughtful。 The characters we’re relatable and I’m sad to reach the end of their story。

It was okay。 Glad I read it。 Appropriate timing with my oldest girls graduating and getting ready to go off to college。

Was a slow start but about half way through the story started to flow leaving the reader wanting to see how the story would end。 A good read about marriage and friendships。

Glorious! Truly glorious。 I have not been this mesmerized by a novel by an unknown author (to me) since I first read Anita Brookner or Elizabeth McCracken or Tessa Hadley。 I ordered every single sentence, every single character, every single plot twist。 Brava!!

4。5 stars! Such a good book! If you follow my reads you know that family drama is one of my favorite genres, and this was a great one! It had complex characters and explored many relationships (parenting, marriage, friendship, etc)。 I especially liked the longtime female friendship between Flora and Margot。 This book brought up a lot of questions about what one would do in certain situations- especially in the face of betrayal。 I would also mention that although there is conflict in the book, it 4。5 stars! I was expecting more based on the blurb。 The characters were okay, but the pov would change randomly, and it was hard to tell past and present。

3。5 stars。 I did a combination book/audiobook on Good Company (the narration was very good) and I did enjoy this tale of the friendship of two couples over the years。 The novel goes back and forth in time, as we follow friends and fellow actresses Flora and Margot, as roommates in New York City, young married couples, and then their diverging paths as Flora devotes herself to mothering daughter Ruby, while Margot becomes a television star on a middling medical drama。 This novel is lacking the sa 3。5 stars。 I did a combination book/audiobook on Good Company (the narration was very good) and I did enjoy this tale of the friendship of two couples over the years。 The novel goes back and forth in time, as we follow friends and fellow actresses Flora and Margot, as roommates in New York City, young married couples, and then their diverging paths as Flora devotes herself to mothering daughter Ruby, while Margot becomes a television star on a middling medical drama。 This novel is lacking the satirical bite of The Nest, the author's previous novel。 And I can't quite put my finger on it yet, but something feels somewhat incomplete in both the plot and the characterization。 But all in all, a pleasant diversion。 Thanks to HarperAudio and NetGalley for the advance readers versions。 。。。more

I really appreciated this book。 I’m a sucker for stories that explore The ripped and worn edges of relationships。 I always get pulled in。 I think Sweeney did a very good job at constructing the structure to offer all angles and perspectives of what happens when those we hold so dear betray us。 I love complicated characters that you can’t help but feel for。 I loved the different transitions of marriage, of moving from adolescence to adulthood。 The nuance of childhood trauma and how it effects our I really appreciated this book。 I’m a sucker for stories that explore The ripped and worn edges of relationships。 I always get pulled in。 I think Sweeney did a very good job at constructing the structure to offer all angles and perspectives of what happens when those we hold so dear betray us。 I love complicated characters that you can’t help but feel for。 I loved the different transitions of marriage, of moving from adolescence to adulthood。 The nuance of childhood trauma and how it effects our future relationships。 I loved the inter-tangling of identity, and what forgiveness is。 I loved the bittersweet nature of this book 。。。more

Well written story about family and friendships。 The writing brings the reader clearly into NYC and into LA down to birds and vegetation。 Creation of place is excellent and connects with so well with life stages and development of feelings。 The two couples are well developed as whole persons, not stereotypes。 No heroes and and no badly flawed people。 Author’s depictions of characters and events remind me of Jodi Picoult who lets tte reader decide and judge outcomes。 I found it easy to sit and lo Well written story about family and friendships。 The writing brings the reader clearly into NYC and into LA down to birds and vegetation。 Creation of place is excellent and connects with so well with life stages and development of feelings。 The two couples are well developed as whole persons, not stereotypes。 No heroes and and no badly flawed people。 Author’s depictions of characters and events remind me of Jodi Picoult who lets tte reader decide and judge outcomes。 I found it easy to sit and lose track of time and I felt myself missing them and wondering what are their next decisions in life。 A great scape。 The novel enveloped me。 。。。more
