Summary

To save the world and our future, Sigma Force must embark on a dangerous odyssey into an ancient past whose horrors are all too present in this page-turning thriller from #1 New York Times bestselling author James Rollins that combines cutting-edge science, historical mystery, mythology, and pulse-pounding action。

For eons, the city of Troy—whose legendary fall was detailed in Homer’s Iliad—was believed to be myth, until archaeologists in the nineteenth century uncovered its ancient walls buried beneath the sands。 If Troy was real, how much of Homer’s twin tales of gods and monsters, curses and miracles—The Iliad and The Odyssey—could also be true and awaiting discovery?

In the frozen tundra of Greenland, a group of modern-day researchers stumble on a shocking find: a medieval ship buried a half-mile below the ice。 The ship’s hold contains a collection of even older artifacts—tools of war—dating back to the Bronze Age。 Inside the captain’s cabin is a magnificent treasure that is as priceless as it is miraculous: a clockwork gold map imbedded with an intricate silver astrolabe。 The mechanism was crafted by a group of Muslim inventors—the Banū Mūsā brothers—considered by many to be the Da Vincis of the Arab world—brilliant scientists who inspired Leonardo’s own work。

Once activated, the moving map traces the path of Odysseus’s famous ship as it sailed away from Troy。 But the route detours as the map opens to reveal a fiery river leading to a hidden realm underneath the Mediterranean Sea。 It is the subterranean world of Tartarus, the Greek name for Hell。 In mythology, Tartarus was where the wicked were punished and the monstrous Titans of old, imprisoned。

When word of Tartarus spreads—and of the cache of miraculous weapons said to be hidden there—tensions explode in this volatile region where Turks battle Kurds, terrorists wage war, and civilians suffer untold horrors。 The phantasmagoric horrors found in Homer’s tales are all too real—and could be unleashed upon the world。 Whoever possesses them can use their awesome power to control the future of humanity。

Now, Sigma Force must go where humans fear to tread。 To prevent a tyrant from igniting a global war, they must cross the very gates of Hell。

My first James Rollins thriller。 He includes a cast of characters called the Sigma Force, a little history and mythology and a little since to create a good and fast read。 This one revolves around a modern day journey to follow route of Odysseus and the Odyssey。 It reminded me of "The Da Vinci Code" and Dan Brown's other exhausting page turners。 I'll try another in the series。 My first James Rollins thriller。 He includes a cast of characters called the Sigma Force, a little history and mythology and a little since to create a good and fast read。 This one revolves around a modern day journey to follow route of Odysseus and the Odyssey。 It reminded me of "The Da Vinci Code" and Dan Brown's other exhausting page turners。 I'll try another in the series。 。。。more

Another roller coaster of a thriller We were taken from Greenland to Italy to Morocco。 These characters have saved the world again。 The plot of this one was rollicking and the twists were definitely surprising

I listened to this as an audio book, and while I reliably love these I had a harder time enjoying it because of the voices the narrator gave each character。 It also made me realize how violent these can be, something I hadn't noticed until I had to listen to it。 Nonetheless the story was unique, entertaining, and an interesting blend of history, science, and mystery。 The ending left me ready for the next one。 I listened to this as an audio book, and while I reliably love these I had a harder time enjoying it because of the voices the narrator gave each character。 It also made me realize how violent these can be, something I hadn't noticed until I had to listen to it。 Nonetheless the story was unique, entertaining, and an interesting blend of history, science, and mystery。 The ending left me ready for the next one。 。。。more

Sigma is still fun and exciting but I did feel it was a little old。 It was a bit like Rollins pulled from the plots of Bloodline and Bone Labyrinth then threw in some heavy religious undertones。 Did I love it? No。 Did it make me cry? Yes。 Will I keep reading his work? Oh yea

My first James Rollins book, but not the last! I had a Myth & Legend course in high school that started me down the path of reading all of the Greek classics。 Also, I've spent holidays in Iceland, worked in Morocco and have a close Berber friend from college days。 So I appreciated the accuracy throughout the book。 Well done!

One of the absolute dumbest books I’ve ever read。 DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME。

Great, crazy concept that Rollins somehow makes completely believable and plausible。 I'm not sure how he pulls this off, but he always does。 Excellent! Okay, so I haven't read a Sigma Force novel in quiet awhile。 But, when I saw this beauty on the shelf I was excited to give it a try again。 Unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed, but not so much that I didn't have a good time reading it。 I was hoping for more discussion of the Greek myths and the gods and goddesses。 I wanted more Trojan war details and more about the Odyssey。 Yes, all of those things do appear but not enough! As for James's ability to weave action and history together to mak Okay, so I haven't read a Sigma Force novel in quiet awhile。 But, when I saw this beauty on the shelf I was excited to give it a try again。 Unfortunately, I was slightly disappointed, but not so much that I didn't have a good time reading it。 I was hoping for more discussion of the Greek myths and the gods and goddesses。 I wanted more Trojan war details and more about the Odyssey。 Yes, all of those things do appear but not enough! As for James's ability to weave action and history together to make a compelling story, well he still has it。 I was excited to read where the characters were going next and I wanted to solve the clues before they did。 It was a good adventure and a fun ride。 。。。more

I got hooked on the first sigma I read, the bone labyrinth。 At the time it had everything I wanted: pulpy fast paced page turning action, a cast of cookie cutter characters with just enough depth to keep the momentum going, ties in science, myth, fiction, conspiracy (loved the artificial moon shit, which I stand by) and alternative history。 Enjoyed the 6th extinction enough to read more sigmas。 The standalones like Amazonia and ice hunt were。。。fun。 I guess I’ve read about 10 Rollins books and。。。 I got hooked on the first sigma I read, the bone labyrinth。 At the time it had everything I wanted: pulpy fast paced page turning action, a cast of cookie cutter characters with just enough depth to keep the momentum going, ties in science, myth, fiction, conspiracy (loved the artificial moon shit, which I stand by) and alternative history。 Enjoyed the 6th extinction enough to read more sigmas。 The standalones like Amazonia and ice hunt were。。。fun。 I guess I’ve read about 10 Rollins books and。。。 holy shit。。。 the last few seem like they could have been the exact same book。 Change the location, change the mysterious object, change the culture your dealing with, change the savage beasties, slightly modify the eccentric millionaire villain bent on ending the world。。。but other than that I think the books are the same。 Pretty sure the dialogue is exactly the same。 I’m quite convinced Rollins has a Mad Libs template and from here, merely fills in the relevant blanks with new, slightly modified, all too tired and painfully familiar details。 。。。more

James Rollins never fails to deliver a great story jam packed with action and adventure。

++Did not read previous books in the series++Good adventure romp, great ties to mythology。 Especially listen to the afterword for real historical tie-ins。

3。5 I usually love to read a James Rollins story but I found this latest novel arduous to get through。 The amount of historical names and the hundreds of pages it took to arrive at some momentum was distracting。
