Summary

For fans of the Netflix series Borgen and WWII history buffs, A Death in Denmark is a page-turning Nordic thriller with a cosmopolitan vibe, introducing Gabriel Præst, an ex-Copenhagen cop (with impeccable fashion sense), Blues musician, and pursuer of truth as he explores Denmark's Nazi-collaborator past and anti-Muslim present in this intelligent and stimulating murder mystery。

Everyone in Denmark knew that Yousef Ahmed, a Muslim refugee from Iraq, brutally murdered the right-wing politician Sanne Melgaard。 So, when part-time Blues musician, frustrated home renovator, and full-time private investigator Gabriel Præst agrees to investigate the matter because his ex--the one who got away--asked him, he knew it was a no-win case。

But as Gabriel starts to ask questions, his face meets with the fists of Russian gangsters, the Danish Prime Minister asks him for a favor, and he starts to realize that something may be rotten in the State of Denmark。

Wondering if Yousef was framed to heighten the local anti-Muslim sentiment, Gabriel follows a trail back in time to World War II when anti-Semitism was raging during the German occupation of Denmark。 Fearing such a mindset has resurfaced, Gabriel rolls up the sleeves of his well-cut suit and gets to work。 From the cobblestone streets of Copenhagen to the historic strassen of Berlin where the sounds of the steel-toed boots of marching Nazis still linger, Gabriel finds that some very powerful Danes don't want him digging into the case--as the secrets he unearths could shake the foundations of Danish identity。

Very atmospheric mystery, set in Copenhagen。 The detective has a quirky sense of humor that made the story entertaining。 The actual mystery was pretty obvious, he just had to prove it to others。 Lots of violence and hinted at sex, but thankfully no descriptions。

I won this through Goodreads giveaways for an honest review。 Because this was an ARC reader this is a printed copy that has some edits but not the final ones。 So I think there are some parts that should be removed but minor parts。 Would read again and I would recommend this to others。 Looking forward to seeing if there will be a second to this book。

This was an excellent Thriller, Murder mystery that had me hooked from the first pages。 I’m hoping there will be more Gabriel Praest novels ahead as he’s a character I want to spend more time with, with an Old-Fashioned in hand! Thank you Harper Collins for the galley。 This one did not disappoint。

great book about a former policeman now PI looking into a wrongly accused murderer。 Gabriel takes on the case at the behest of a former lover/lawyer。 love all the weather, food and bike riding that takes place in this book。 also like the sidekicks of his friends。 want to read more from this author。

Gabriel Præst is a Danish PI hired to investigate a murder that a Muslim man was convicted for。 The storyline was interesting, covering the Dane collaboration with the Germans during WWII。 However, the story fell short for me。 An attempt was made to build distinguishable characters but the effort fell flat。 The characters were stereotypical without depth。

I thought the pace and character interactions in this book were excellent。 I read it in several big chunks。 The main character was interesting and multi-dimensional although the author certainly made some of his character traits more than a little confusing。 Although she made sure to describe how Gabriel was having sex with multiple women, almost everything else about him screamed that he was gay。 Not only did he have to dress like a fashion plate everywhere he went - and it wasn't just what he I thought the pace and character interactions in this book were excellent。 I read it in several big chunks。 The main character was interesting and multi-dimensional although the author certainly made some of his character traits more than a little confusing。 Although she made sure to describe how Gabriel was having sex with multiple women, almost everything else about him screamed that he was gay。 Not only did he have to dress like a fashion plate everywhere he went - and it wasn't just what he was wearing but WHO he was wearing, from the brand of his shoes to his hat to his suit coat - on every outfit! From the way he was furnishing and decorating his house (again, with specific brand names for chairs, sofas, tables, etc。), he could have been mistaken for any of the gay interior designers on HGTV。 I did not think him being gay took away from the story at all but I just didn't feel the author was totally honest with his character。 I would have also liked the author to add more historical details to the story of Danish Nazi collaborators。 Just when it seemed like she was going to start to dig into some interesting historical details, she would back off and re-emphasize the book's characters。 。。。more

This engrossing mystery immerses the reader in the scenes and culture of Denmark for a very welcome change of place。 The current social and political crises of our country are not unique, and it seems that Denmark faces them as well。 Government corruption, immigration, the Russian menace, buried history and more, figure into the complicated plot。 The cover indicates that this is the first GABRIEL PRAEST novel so it looks like we will be seeing more of his detective work。

I am so happy to have gotten in at the beginning of what promises to be a terrific detective series。 Gabriel Praest is a fun new main character, a private investigator with panache, and a sharp sense of humor。 I found myself laughing out loud at some of the snarky comments he made during the course of his investigations。 There are plenty of openings for further character development, and this first novel had a ton of suspense and mystery。 I am anxiously awaiting the next installment in this seri I am so happy to have gotten in at the beginning of what promises to be a terrific detective series。 Gabriel Praest is a fun new main character, a private investigator with panache, and a sharp sense of humor。 I found myself laughing out loud at some of the snarky comments he made during the course of his investigations。 There are plenty of openings for further character development, and this first novel had a ton of suspense and mystery。 I am anxiously awaiting the next installment in this series。 。。。more

I won this book in a goodreads contest。 This was a fast paced murder mystery featuring P。I。 Gabriel Praest。 I finished it in 3 days could not put it down。 The story drags nazis and current politicians into play with very loveable characters。 I cannot wait for the next book featuring Gabriel Praest。

First in a new series and I really liked this one。。Looking forward to next。

I thought it was a really interesting book。The main character was pitiful boy man。 Very much like so many I know。 The politics and fixers trying to keep scandal at bay how funny。 Very much like here。

Very, very good。 Smart, witty and urbane。 A modern John Steed fights for justice in Copenhagen。 I hope many books are to follow。 I will read them all!

Gabriel is an ex-cop turned detective in Copenhagen。 When his ex asks him to help her prove an immigrant did not kill a political figure, he wants to decline, but… His investigation leads him back to Danish/Nazi resistance and conspiracy and almost costs him his life。 I only wish I had known all the designers mentioned as his clothes are a large part of the story。

Good characters and interesting story。 The plot moves ahead quickly though the ending is a bit predictable, but worth following。 I would read this author again。 I was provided with a complimentary copy of this book so I could give an honest review。

Flash forward to the present: Copenhagen ex-cop and now private investigator, Gabriel Praest, is hired by a former lover to clear the name of a Muslim refugee convicted of murdering a right-wing politician。 How the two seemingly unconnected events are related, is the essence of this twisty, Nordic mystery that finds Gabriel battling not only the Russian mafia but Danish politicians who don't want their past or present secrets exposed。This is the first in a new series featuring Praest and if this book is any indication, it promises to be one I will be reading。 The writing is excellent, the plot complex, and the pacing spot-on。 Praest is an enjoyable character with just enough quirks to make him interesting。 The story itself draws parallels between the rampant antisemitism spread by the Nazis and today's anti-immigrant stance occurring worldwide。 It is a thought-provoking read that tests one's moral compass。 I'm looking forward to more in this series。Thank you, NetGalley and William Morrow for an advance copy of this book for review。 The publication date is March 28, 2023。 。。。more
