Summary

Listening length: 13 hours

From New York Times bestselling author Amy Harmon comes the saga of a young woman who dares to chart her own destiny in life and love during the American Revolutionary War。

In 1760, Deborah Samson is born to Puritan parents in Plympton, Massachusetts。 When her father abandons the family and her mother is unable to support them, Deborah is bound out as an indentured servant。 From that moment on, she yearns for a life of liberation and adventure。

Twenty years later, as the American colonies begin to buckle in their battle for independence, Deborah, impassioned by the cause, disguises herself as a soldier and enlists in the Continental Army。 Her impressive height and lanky build make her transformation a convincing one, and it isn’t long before she finds herself confronting the horrors of war head-on。

But as Deborah fights for her country’s freedom, she must contend with the secret of who she is—and, ultimately, a surprising love she can’t deny。

awesome! I loved this book! It is the first book in a looonnng time where i didn’t want to put it down and i would think of the characters during my day。 I loved how it was written。 I feel i knew Deborah so well and thus, lived her life as i read。 And the historical background was also mesmerizing。 Thank you for this Amy!

I loved this book! An Amazon Prime First Reads book selection, this one is based on the life of Deborah Sampson, a young girl who grew up as an indentured servant in the days before the Revolutionary War and wanted to fight so badly that at the age of nineteen she bound her breasts and dressed as a teenaged boy and signed up! Incredible!! I’m in love with this person of history and the fictional telling of a true person。 I had never heard of Samson or any woman fighting in the revolution! - of course we wouldn’t。 It’s a remarkable read。 Not quite a five star because many passages are impersonal and akin to something you would read from a textbook。 It was dull to read。“DeLancey and his men had attacked a defensive position held by the Rhode Island Regiment on the north bank of the Croton River near Yorktown in Westche Incredible!! I really wanted to like this book as so many readers did。 But Amy Harmon lost me about 3/4 of the way through when the storyline took what I found to be a tired, trite and contrived turn。 I understand historical fiction means fiction, but this book, based on a true story, would have pleased me more without the added fiction。

This book was an eye opening and extraordinary read! I thought I was reading a historical fiction book about a fictitious woman during a real event so I was gobsmacked when I came to the author’s note at the end of the book and discovered Deborah Samson is based off of the very real Deborah Sampson。 Deborah Samson is indentured to the Thomas family; a Deacon, his wife, and their 10 boys when she is just 8 years old。 While she is their servant she is also their friend and feels as though all 10 b This book was an eye opening and extraordinary read! I thought I was reading a historical fiction book about a fictitious woman during a real event so I was gobsmacked when I came to the author’s note at the end of the book and discovered Deborah Samson is based off of the very real Deborah Sampson。 Deborah Samson is indentured to the Thomas family; a Deacon, his wife, and their 10 boys when she is just 8 years old。 While she is their servant she is also their friend and feels as though all 10 boys are her brothers。 The local Reverend is a father like figure to her and starts her on a letter writing relationship with his niece, Elizabeth, when Deborah is 13 so she can work on her penmanship and letter writing skills and also feed her mind。 During the 5 years they communicate Deborah often complains about not being able to do what and go where she wants because she is a girl。 When she turns 18, she runs away and joins the military under the guise of being a boy。 She holds her own as a soldier and is able to hide her true self while impressing everyone she comes across。 While the fictional Deborah Samson has many similarities to the real Deborah Sampson, the majority of the book is fictionalized (the number of sons the Thomas family had, her friendship with Elizabeth, her romance with a General) but the weaving of both reality and fiction works perfectly。 Told from the first person point of view, Amy Harmon so beautifully captures how a woman was stifled from her true potential back in the 1700’s, and really throughout all time。 Honestly, even now in the second decade of the 21st century it still feels like women are being stifled, though certainly not how it was in the 18th and 19th centuries。This is the second book of Ms。 Harmon’s that I’ve read and now I can’t wait to devour the other books she has written。 My favorite thing in a historical fiction novel is learning something new and both books I’ve read have taught me things I feel I probably should have learned in American History in high school。 Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an advanced copy of this book。 This gem hit the shelves on April 1st。 。。。more

what an epic bookI’ve just finished this amazing book, feel sad to leave Deborah Samson, Bonnie behind。 The characters came alive, as did the battles and difficulties suffered by everyone during this period in American history。 Highly recommend and huge thanks to Amy Harmon for her latest masterpiece。

What a brilliant year for Historical Fiction! The history itself is outstanding, remarkable and phenomenal! I’ll definitely be doing some digging to find out more about Deborah Sampson。 I love how historical fiction brings out hidden stories and this is one of those stories that needs to be remembered。 So thank you to the author for brining this part of history back to life and allowing people to learn more! This is DEFINITELY worth reading! 。。。more

2。5 out of 5 stars。。。I absolutely loved "Where the lost wander" and I always assume that each book by Amy Harmon is going to blow me away like that book。。。however, this one did not。 I loved the idea of the story but I did not like the romance that was included。 I wish it hadn't been included in the story。 I had such high hopes, but was left feeling let down。 2。5 out of 5 stars。。。I absolutely loved "Where the lost wander" and I always assume that each book by Amy Harmon is going to blow me away like that book。。。however, this one did not。 I loved the idea of the story but I did not like the romance that was included。 I wish it hadn't been included in the story。 I had such high hopes, but was left feeling let down。 。。。more

I was surprised, at the end of the book, to find that this was a fictionalized version of a true story。 I rather wish it weren't。 Deborah Sampson, while still young, was forced to be an indentured servant but finally landed with a good family。 Their ten sons only added to her need and yearning to experience what she thought of as freedom。 While this feels like a spoiler, it is in the book blurb: As an older teen, she disguised herself as a boy and enlisted in the Continental Army。 Hats off to Am I was surprised, at the end of the book, to find that this was a fictionalized version of a true story。 I rather wish it weren't。 Deborah Sampson, while still young, was forced to be an indentured servant but finally landed with a good family。 Their ten sons only added to her need and yearning to experience what she thought of as freedom。 While this feels like a spoiler, it is in the book blurb: As an older teen, she disguised herself as a boy and enlisted in the Continental Army。 Hats off to Amy Harmon for the considerable research she had to have done to write this story! It’s a story based on real people, except for all the good parts。 It was so disappointing to realize what was heavily fictionalized。 The first half also reads more like a history book with brief interruptions of narrative。 I didn’t pick it up to read a play by play on the revolutionary war。 But Deborah was an impressive woman IRL and her character was brought to life in this book。

Five plus, plus book! I’m putting this story at the top of Amy Harmon’s books that I love, and that’s more than five of her books that stand out to me。 This historical book is a story of a young, smart, brave, courageous girl who became or first female war pensioned soldier。 I loved everything about Deborah Samson and John Paterson。 This is a must read for those of you who are historical fiction lovers!

I love Amy Harmon's historical fiction novels。 She always finds such unique historical characters and lesser-known events and brings them to life。 They are well-researched and well-paced and this book was no different。 I enjoyed reading about Deborah Samson, the woman turned Revolutionary War soldier。 This is a time period I learned about in school but don't actually know much about。 Hearing about the unpopularity of the war and the struggles everyone faced during that time was so interesting。 D I love Amy Harmon's historical fiction novels。 She always finds such unique historical characters and lesser-known events and brings them to life。 They are well-researched and well-paced and this book was no different。 I enjoyed reading about Deborah Samson, the woman turned Revolutionary War soldier。 This is a time period I learned about in school but don't actually know much about。 Hearing about the unpopularity of the war and the struggles everyone faced during that time was so interesting。 Deborah Samson's story was incredible and so progressive for a woman of her time。 I listened to 2/3 of this book on audio and it was fantastic。 The narrator had a unique voice for each of the (many) different characters。 She read with such emotion and feeling that it felt more like a performance than a reading。 She brought this book to life。 My criticism: I think the author went too far with the fictitious romance。 It is historical fiction。 Authors are free to add whatever fiction to the account that they choose。 I have no problem adding in a little romance to make a story more appealing。 However, I feel like she went too far with the romanticized story of Deborah Samson。 The real Deborah was an extraordinary woman。 Her story could have stood on its own or with far less detail or continued breadth on that particular storyline。 I thought the final chapter was great closure and wish it had come 3 or 4 chapters sooner。 Despite this, I wholeheartedly recommend the book。 。。。more

I loved this little known history of a woman fighting in the American revolution dressed as a man。 It’s just sad that 250 years later, women are still not considered or treated as equals。 It’s still a white man’s world。 Great characters and great story。

Enjoyable book It is well written and very interesting。 I enjoyed it from first page to last。 It keeps your interest from the beginning to end。

I needed an escape from all the thriller/mystery books I had been reading, and this was a good escape。 An easy read, and the best part is that this is mostly based on a true story of a woman named Deborah Samson who joined the army during the Revolutionary War。 This book made me realize I have been neglecting my love of books in the historical fiction genre。
