While technically GMRS has been around in one form or another for many years， the current GMRS service was established in 1987。 GMRS’ growth as a Personal Radio Service under Part 95 of 47 USC really took off in only the past couple of years。 Regulatory changes that added messaging， channels and authorized FRS and GMRS channel sharing date back only to 2017。
