Summary

When first they meet, Mireille and Benjamin fall into a puddle。 The circumstances are hardly ideal。 Yet neither can stop thinking of the encounter, and what it means for each of them。 Mireille lives a relatively safe existence as a gardener at a popular teahouse, suspicious of romantic attraction。 They exist as both man and woman, content in their skin。 However, not everyone accepts such fluidity nor modernism。 Benjamin manages his family’s successful publishing house, believing love is merely a fiction。 The two agree to an unlikely arrangement amidst the vibrance and prejudice of 1820 Paris。 Soon, they form a fierce bond, one that may jeopardize both of their familiar lives。

I'm always excited to read new HR, and I was especially excited to see a queer take on 1820s Paris。 There are nuggets of good writing in this, but some aspects of the story felt unpolished。 I really hate leaving a two star review on a new author's work, but I have to be honest because I would want the same from someone reading my own writing。Personally, I didn't see much chemistry between the characters of Mireille and Benjamin。 They just felt too similar。 Both struggle socially and (at first) d I'm always excited to read new HR, and I was especially excited to see a queer take on 1820s Paris。 There are nuggets of good writing in this, but some aspects of the story felt unpolished。 I really hate leaving a two star review on a new author's work, but I have to be honest because I would want the same from someone reading my own writing。Personally, I didn't see much chemistry between the characters of Mireille and Benjamin。 They just felt too similar。 Both struggle socially and (at first) don't believe in romance。 A romance should have moments that make your heart race and have you giddy with excitement - but I just didn't feel that with this couple。 They're often running away from each other for some reason or other and then apologizing。 There's a lot of "Je suis désolé"-ing happening in this book, which feels really repetitive。French is often used in HR。 Normally, I can look past a couple of poorly written phrases that appear in a story set in Regency or Victorian England。 But when it comes to a story set in Paris, I expect the French to be flawless, or at least close to it。 To be honest, the amount of errors here is egregious: "frére," "Je sui désolé," "bonne apres-midi," "Non, es magnifique," "Je vois en prie," and many others。 I can excuse a typo here and there in an independently published book, but these errors are constantly repeated which takes away a lot of the immersion for me。 The characters are simply not believably French when they say "bonne" where they should say "bon。" The most bizarre thing about it is that in some places the words are correct and then suddenly are spelled wrong the next time they're used。 I really recommend having this corrected by a French speaker。 Monolingual readers probably won't notice, but I think a lot of these errors would be noticed by anyone with the most basic knowledge of the language。Overall, this is a decent start to a historical romance, but it needs work。 。。。more
