Summary

The #1 New York Times Bestseller

Updated with a new introduction and featuring never-before-seen photos

Jessica reveals for the first time her inner monologue and most intimate struggles。 Guided by the journals she's kept since age fifteen, and brimming with her unique humor and down-to-earth humanity, Open Book is as inspiring as it is entertaining。

This was supposed to be a very different book。 Five years ago, Jessica Simpson was approached to write a motivational guide to living your best life。 She walked away from the offer, and nobody understood why。 The truth is that she didn’t want to lie。

Jessica couldn’t be authentic with her readers if she wasn’t fully honest with herself first。

Now America’s Sweetheart, preacher’s daughter, pop phenomenon, reality tv pioneer, and the billion-dollar fashion mogul invites readers on a remarkable journey, examining a life that blessed her with the compassion to help others, but also burdened her with an almost crippling need to please。 Open Book is Jessica Simpson using her voice, heart, soul, and humor to share things she’s never shared before。

First celebrated for her voice, she became one of the most talked-about women in the world, whether for music and fashion, her relationship struggles, or as a walking blonde joke。 But now, instead of being talked about, Jessica is doing the talking。 Her book shares the wisdom and inspirations she’s learned and shows the real woman behind all the pop-culture cliché’s — “chicken or fish,” “Daisy Duke,” "football jinx," “mom jeans,” “sexual napalm…” and more。 Open Book is an opportunity to laugh and cry with a close friend, one that will inspire you to live your best, most authentic life, now that she is finally living hers。

Great memoir on audio! You can definitely feel the emotion as Jessica reads the book

I read this as part of a book club。 I wasn't the one to pick this book, but I'm glad it was chosen。 I unexpectedly liked it。 It elicited some good discussion and was a pretty easy to read book。 I'm not sorry I read it at all。 I read this as part of a book club。 I wasn't the one to pick this book, but I'm glad it was chosen。 I unexpectedly liked it。 It elicited some good discussion and was a pretty easy to read book。 I'm not sorry I read it at all。 。。。more

I didn't initially think that I would find this book so interesting, but I couldn't put it down! Reading about this public figure's personal struggles and upbringing was intriguing and at times inspiring - knowing that the impetus for writing this was to overcome her addictions and traumas also makes this a poignant read。 I didn't initially think that I would find this book so interesting, but I couldn't put it down! I don't usually read biographies but Jessica's life intrigued me, always has。 I loved the way she wrote the book like she was talking to her reads and many times she literally was。 Hearing her story directly from her makes everything so real and a reminder that everyone has a story and that fame can take you to a dark place。 I don't usually read biographies but Jessica's life intrigued me, always has。 I loved the way she wrote the book like she was talking to her reads and many times she literally was。 Hearing her story directly from her makes everything so real and a reminder that everyone has a story and that fame can take you to a dark place。 。。。more

Loved this book! Jessica is raw and open and relatable

Five very enthusiastic stars! I just loved hearing Jessica tell her story in her own words, at times so full of emotion I cried along with her。 I loved hearing the “behind the scenes” details of her early career and The Newlyweds (I watched every episode)! But I was mostly drawn to her faith and experiences growing up in her church and with her youth group。 She actually used the phrase “You can take the girl out of the youth group but you can’t take the youth group out of the girl”。 Totally rela Five very enthusiastic stars! I was touched by how much she has done for our servicemen overseas and also enjoyed reading about her time with Dolly Parton and Willie Nelson。 Her chapter about her cousin Sarah touched my heart。 This was a great insight into her life and struggles and I grew to respect her as an artist, businesswoman, and mother the more I read。 This book isn’t just for Jessica Simpson fans, but for anyone who enjoys learning about someone else’s life and experiences, and how with a little faith in God and yourself, you can always find your way。 。。。more

If all you know about Jessica is the "Chicken of the Sea" quip or her role in Dukes of Hazard, you are in for a real treat when you read this book。 It was a refreshing read。。。Jessica shares her most vulnerable moments with clarity and honesty unlike so many other memoirs I have read。 The title, Open Book, is prophetic。 After turning the last page, I wanted to avenge all the wrongs she endured at the hands of others。 If all you know about Jessica is the "Chicken of the Sea" quip or her role in Dukes of Hazard, you are in for a real treat when you read this book。 It was a refreshing read。。。Jessica shares her most vulnerable moments with clarity and honesty unlike so many other memoirs I have read。 The title, Open Book, is prophetic。 After turning the last page, I wanted to avenge all the wrongs she endured at the hands of others。 。。。more

Some good early 2000s gossip。 Some uncomfortable white savior moments。 John Mayer is a sociopath。

I thought this was going to be a fast, lighter read。 This book is a fast read, but it was not light or superficial at all。 The relatable voice and themes Jessica shared had me turning page after page。 It also helped that there was so much early 2000 nostalgia involved, I was hooked。 Her faith, lessons learned and vulnerability made this an impactful and memorable read。

Whoa!! I had no idea of the many challenges Jessica faced throughout her life。 I felt like the writing was good and she truly was an ‘open book’

4+。 This is a great memoir for those who grew up following her career and those of other young pop artists。 I really enjoyed her story, and her strength to live it and write about it。

I was pleasantly surprised with how much I enjoyed this book。 I’m reminded of how skewed the media presents a celebrity’s life and how people need to be kinder to people。。。especially to people they have never met。

Jessica clearly has a distorted view of reality and this reads as if she had a terrible editor/PR Team or ones who are as far removed from the average American life as she is。 This book really took me back to my young teen years and it was interesting to have some insight to all the celebrity drama。 She takes minor incidents and turns them into self-victimizing traumas。 I’m not a big Jessica Simpson fan and maybe that’s why I didn’t connect to this book BUT it did give me some good laughs at the Jessica clearly has a distorted view of reality and this reads as if she had a terrible editor/PR Team or ones who are as far removed from the average American life as she is。 This book really took me back to my young teen years and it was interesting to have some insight to all the celebrity drama。 She takes minor incidents and turns them into self-victimizing traumas。 I’m not a big Jessica Simpson fan and maybe that’s why I didn’t connect to this book BUT it did give me some good laughs at the celebrity life and basically confirmed a lot of what I spectated about the Jessica, Brittney, and Christina’s of my time。 。。。more

Honest, funny, open-hearted and raw, unlike some self-promoting, self-aggrandizing stuff that calls itself "memoir" these days。 Many parts are bittersweet but hysterical at the same time, like the John Mayer bits (is this prick cancelled already?) or the times she's mistaken for Britney Spears: first by her in-laws (they ask her future husband if she's the pop star who shaved her head and has two kids, LMAO) and then by an old woman at Disney World (the irony!)。 She doesn't take herself too seri Honest, funny, open-hearted and raw, unlike some self-promoting, self-aggrandizing stuff that calls itself "memoir" these days。 Many parts are bittersweet but hysterical at the same time, like the John Mayer bits (is this prick cancelled already?) or the times she's mistaken for Britney Spears: first by her in-laws (they ask her future husband if she's the pop star who shaved her head and has two kids, LMAO) and then by an old woman at Disney World (the irony!)。 She doesn't take herself too seriously and is muuuch much more self-aware than people give her credit for: as for her sense of humor, she says Great Expectations is her favorite book, and now I understand why! She can seriously laugh at herself and at the dire situations thrown her way。 I didn't expect to like this so much! Recommended for those who want to know the other side of fame。 。。。more

Jessica Simpson and I have been BFFs ever since I spotted her shopping at my local mall and introduced myself。 I mean, I haven’t spoken to her since but I’m sure meeting me affected her in a profound way。 I had to read her memoir to see if she mentioned our fateful encounter。 Alas, she does not。 Anywho, while I’ve never been much of a fan of her music, I loved the show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, her reality show with her then-husband Nick Lachey。 Of course, the real reason I wanted to read her Jessica Simpson and I have been BFFs ever since I spotted her shopping at my local mall and introduced myself。 I mean, I haven’t spoken to her since but I’m sure meeting me affected her in a profound way。 I had to read her memoir to see if she mentioned our fateful encounter。 Alas, she does not。 Anywho, while I’ve never been much of a fan of her music, I loved the show Newlyweds: Nick and Jessica, her reality show with her then-husband Nick Lachey。 Of course, the real reason I wanted to read her book was to get the inside scoop on that and other things, like her relationship with music’s biggest douche, John Mayer。Open Book lives up to its name。 Jessica spills it all: her childhood sexual abuse, her marriage to Lachey, her emotionally abusive relationship to Mayer (who is an even bigger jerk than I thought he was), the hot sex with her current husband Eric Johnson and more。 She’s honest about her alcoholism, which I didn’t even know about。 The only thing I didn’t like about this book is that she regularly breaks the fourth wall and addresses the reader in a way that sounds cheesy and a bit insincere。 Overall, this is the kind of celebrity memoir I love – honest, dishy and detailed。 。。。more

The media and entertainment industry did Jessica Simpson so dirty。 Her memoir was raw, real and inspiring。 Also, I say this with all due disrespect, JOHN MAYER IS TRASH。

Wow。 I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into when I picked up Open Book by Jessica Simpson。 I was a tween in the 2000's when she was "big" (married to Nick Lachey and had that MTV reality show), but I didn't pay attention to her。 I do remember having one of her albums but I can't remember which one。 I was more of a Britney and Christina fan myself。 But I thought Jessica was a good singer。I was wowed by this memoir。 It is clear she's been through therapy and worked on herself because not eve Wow。 I wasn't sure what I was getting myself into when I picked up Open Book by Jessica Simpson。 I was a tween in the 2000's when she was "big" (married to Nick Lachey and had that MTV reality show), but I didn't pay attention to her。 I do remember having one of her albums but I can't remember which one。 I was more of a Britney and Christina fan myself。 But I thought Jessica was a good singer。I was wowed by this memoir。 It is clear she's been through therapy and worked on herself because not every memoir is as clear about their flaws and faults as this one, ESPECIALLY celebrity memoirs。 I enjoyed learning about her past and what made Jessica Jessica。 I appreciated her honesty about working in the business (body image, dysmorphia, expectations, being pitted against Britney and Christina) and about her marriage(s)。 I also appreciated the look into her songwriting process and her religious perspective。 Her acknowledgement of her alcoholism was good, too, and I wish more had been written about her recovery process。 “Sometimes we are all so afraid to be honest with ourselves because we know that honesty will lead to somewhere。” I wrote this ten years ago。 “Can fear walk us to something better?” This book felt like talking to Jessica herself, and I suspect the audiobook is even better。 I couldn't put this one down。 。。。more

I have a bit more respect for Jessica's business acumen after reading this book。 But I think it is best appreciated by those under 40。 As an older woman of 65, who has lived a life with terrific ups and awful downs, I found it the tiniest bit immature and whiney。 Her downs are what I would call a life, not a tragedy。 Particularly, Jessica, get over your parents divorce, they seem to have gotten over it。But I commend her strength in dealing with her alcohol and drug habit。 Her successful clothing I have a bit more respect for Jessica's business acumen after reading this book。 But I think it is best appreciated by those under 40。 As an older woman of 65, who has lived a life with terrific ups and awful downs, I found it the tiniest bit immature and whiney。 Her downs are what I would call a life, not a tragedy。 Particularly, Jessica, get over your parents divorce, they seem to have gotten over it。But I commend her strength in dealing with her alcohol and drug habit。 Her successful clothing line is her great ability to make good decisions and surround herself with the right people for the right job。 Her long lasting friendships is a mark of a warm and loving human being。 。。。more

I picked this book up because I wanted something light to read and I just could not with the Hallmark romance books anymore。 I picked this up from the library and I enjoyed it so much more than I thought I would! Go easy on yourself。” I don’t share her faith in God, but I loved hearing about what saved her, what made her happy, but I didn’t feel preached to。 I was reading a woman tell me about the love she had for HER Lord and savior。 Yet her relationship with God gave me a couple nuggets of strength that I will take with me。 “I think we sometimes get so caught up in the vessel of the work rather than what matters: the spirit that fills it。” When speaking about what we really want to “do” with our lives。 I greatly enjoyed this book。 And don’t talk about my homegirl Jessica Simpson to my face; I will clap back。 。。。more

It isn’t often that I’m sad to finish a book。 I just finished Jessica Simpson’s “Open Book” and I cannot recommend it enough。 As a young adult in the late 90s/early 00s I obviously knew of her but have not followed her closely at all。 Every woman should read this book。 The way she confronts mental health, sobriety, motherhood, careers, body image, relationships。。。wow。 That’s all I can say。 If you’re looking for a book, this is a good one。 If you’re an audiobook fan like I am, 100% snag this one, It isn’t often that I’m sad to finish a book。 I just finished Jessica Simpson’s “Open Book” and I cannot recommend it enough。 As a young adult in the late 90s/early 00s I obviously knew of her but have not followed her closely at all。 Every woman should read this book。 The way she confronts mental health, sobriety, motherhood, careers, body image, relationships。。。wow。 That’s all I can say。 If you’re looking for a book, this is a good one。 If you’re an audiobook fan like I am, 100% snag this one, for sure。 。。。more

I thought this book was interesting especially as someone who doesn’t know much about Jessica Simpson and thought it was great how the audiobook was read but Jessica Simpson herself。 I think if you are a fan of pop culture it would a great read。
