Summary

About a woman who thinks she’s found the love of her life—until he disappears。

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her。 Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey。 Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child。 Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother。

As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was。 And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared。

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth。 But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated。

I'm making an attempt to opt for audiobooks that I already own and haven't found the dedication to read - all while marking off books on my Book of the Month Bookshelf - and frankly, I'm thrilled I listened to this one in place of reading it。 The narrator was great, and I was able to remove myself from the story (does anyone else insert themself as the main character when they read?) and it made it more enjoyable for me since I am 100% confident I would not have made the same choices as these ch I'm making an attempt to opt for audiobooks that I already own and haven't found the dedication to read - all while marking off books on my Book of the Month Bookshelf - and frankly, I'm thrilled I listened to this one in place of reading it。 The narrator was great, and I was able to remove myself from the story (does anyone else insert themself as the main character when they read?) and it made it more enjoyable for me since I am 100% confident I would not have made the same choices as these characters。 This book didn't play out as I expected, and while I'm excited to watch the mini-series on this, I can't help but wonder if knowing that Jennifer Garner will be playing Hannah distorted the character in my head to be more likeable? I will confess that the reason I borrowed this audiobook from my library is in part due to my excitement to see her in the role。 All in all, I didn't love this book, but found it enjoyable enough。 I didn't quite meet my criteria for a feel good ending - which I feel always leaves me with a bit of a book hangover - but, it was well written, captivating, and I found myself wanting to return to it to hear where the story would take us next。 I would say this one falls closer to 4 stars than 3, but just wasn't quite satisfying enough for me to click that fourth star。 。。。more

I listened to this as an audiobook。 Overall I thought it was a decent mystery read。 The middle part of the book got better when they started filling in some missing clues。 I wasn’t thrilled with the ending。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 This book had a really strong start and I expected it to be phenomenal。 It stayed strong through the first half and then kind of fell off。 I feel like the ending was rushed and kind of thrown together and by the end it felt like there was no point of the story。 There wasn't a ton of character growth, there wasn't really a resolve with Owen, and I feel like Hannah and Baileys relationship was completely forced by a trauma and wasn't very real。I liked Hannahs character but I wish there was more de This book had a really strong start and I expected it to be phenomenal。 It stayed strong through the first half and then kind of fell off。 I feel like the ending was rushed and kind of thrown together and by the end it felt like there was no point of the story。 There wasn't a ton of character growth, there wasn't really a resolve with Owen, and I feel like Hannah and Baileys relationship was completely forced by a trauma and wasn't very real。I liked Hannahs character but I wish there was more details about her relationship with her grandfather。 They kind of dip into that but not much。 I wanted to know how her past relationships shaped her actions now。 There wasn't a ton of information about that。 I also wish we knew more about Baileys relationship with her family。 It seemed completely unrealistic that she didn't remember a thing about her past。 All of us have memories of being young。I felt like we didn't know Owen at all。 I get that was kind of the point but they didn't uncover much even at the end。 We don't really know how he got $600,000 in cash, we didn't know if he actually had something to do with the fraud。 The end all we have is assumptions。 I also think its dumb that instead of facing the music and living life out happily with Hannah and Bailey he stays in hiding。 I think it is absolutely unrealistic to assume that Bailey and Nicholas would have any sort of relationship after he caused her mother to be killed, her father to run away and is holding that all over her head。 Overall I personally could pass over this book and It wouldn't be my first recommendation。 I wish there was more of a resolve and I wish there was more character development! 。。。more

This is third book I've read by this author and I have enjoyed them all, but this one is the best。 I could not quit reading it。 It was to me a perfectly written book。 It had a great flow and the characters were wonderful。 I enjoyed every minute of reading this book and think it might classify as a psychological thriller。 This woman was determined to help this young girl who was not even her child but was child of her husband and his deceased wife。 He left town in a hurry and only left her a note This is third book I've read by this author and I have enjoyed them all, but this one is the best。 I could not quit reading it。 It was to me a perfectly written book。 It had a great flow and the characters were wonderful。 I enjoyed every minute of reading this book and think it might classify as a psychological thriller。 This woman was determined to help this young girl who was not even her child but was child of her husband and his deceased wife。 He left town in a hurry and only left her a note。 She was determined to find out what happened to him and to also take care of his daughter。 The book even had a somewhat happy ending, happy witht he facts that we learned as she went on her journey to find out why her husband disappeared。 My mystery book club is reading this book for April and I definitely recommend to anyone who enjoys this type of story。 。。。more

A quick and easy read。 Not much plot-twisting, but I appreciated the escape from everyday life。

Valerie McColgan

Certainly not a terrible book but it really did nothing for me。 I found so many elements far fetched and the ending was not the *wow* I would hoping for。 I also felt annoyed that basically the entire plot only works because Hannah feels so fiercely protective of a 16 year old she essentially met 2 years ago and is not very close to。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Not what I was expecting but overall really good。 I loved the general meaning to this book and that everything is about Bailey and truly protecting her。 That he’s there’s a choice but really there isn’t。 I think everyone got exactly what was meant to be and even the last chapter made me happy even though it was still sad

Not too taxing, quite enjoyable - wanted to see how it ended, but not fully invested

I overall enjoyed this book although the big suspense was somewhat underwhelming。 I was satisfied with the ending and how things tied together。 It’s a nice story to get lost in and I’m looking forward to watching the mini series on Apple TV。

Quick, plot-twisty thriller about a wife investigating the disappearance of her husband after a financial scandal while juggling the tenuous relationship with her step-daughter。

Meh ! I DNF the book into around 100 pages Didn’t grab me at all Didn’t care for the characters/ didn’t care for the plot - just nothing engaging

This book was just not good。 The characters were annoying and the story was weird。 I am not sure how it is on some many book club lists or a bestseller。

I think the more realistic rating of this book would be a 3。7ish。 The Last Thing isn’t something that will stick with you after you have read it, just a fun mystery that kinda sweeps you in from the beginning。 I read it like I would binge a Netflix show (they are actually making a movie or show from this in Apple TV +) on a weekend where I have nothing better to do, aka this past weekend。 If you’re looking for easy entertainment and a quick read, this will scratch the itch。

Shelly Holbrook

This book started out SO good and I was absolutely hooked, but it fell flat and had very few twists and turns。 Very surprised it’s getting a TV show or movie or whatever

Didn’t really enjoy it。 It was hard to get into。 Kind of dragged and the ending just felt too open ended。 Honestly was frustrating to read。 Husband goes missing after big scandal and it’s about a woman and her step daughter revealing secrets about his past and trying to find him。

3。75⭐️

Enough mystery to keep my attention but lacking in suspense。 Mary Higgins Clark would have definitely given this story some twisted spice ha ha I felt that Hannah didn’t react with much emotion to the situation。 She just took it all in stride, I didn’t find that believable。“The thing about good & evil is they aren’t so far apart。 They often start from the valiant place of wanting something to be different。”

Stephanie

Gobbled this up in a few days ❤️ truly lovely。

This was an okay read。 Bittersweet ending

The whole thing was a slow burn。 start to finish and it finished quickly without filling in many of the gaps。 writing was okay。 characters were not complex。 I found the story line flat and lacking any sort of meaning or passion。
