Summary

Praise for The Best Strangers in the World “ The Best Strangers in the World is a witty, poignant book that captures Ari Shapiro’s love for the unusual, his pursuit of the unexpected, and his delight at connection against the odds。”—Ronan Farrow, Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative journalist and New York Times -bestselling author of Catch and Kill and War on Peace From the beloved host of NPR's All Things Considered, a stirring memoir-in-essays that is also a lover letter to journalism。 In his first book, broadcaster Ari Shapiro takes us around the globe to reveal the stories behind narratives that are sometimes heartwarming, sometimes heartbreaking, but always poignant。 He details his time traveling on Air Force One with President Obama, or following the path of Syrian refugees fleeing war, or learning from those fighting for social justice both at home and abroad。 As the self-reinforcing bubbles we live in become more impenetrable, Ari Shapiro keeps seeking ways to help people listen to one another; to find connection and commonality with those who may seem different; to remind us that, before religion, or nationality, or politics, we are all human。 The Best Strangers in the World is a testament to one journalist’s passion for Considering All Things—and sharing what he finds with the rest of us。

If you're a fan of Ari Shapiro on NPR, you'll want to read this book。 This memoir starts at the beginning of his life, chronicling how he came out as gay as a teenager and began a life of "translating" and presenting cultures in front of groups of listeners。 The book is well written and interesting。 I would have preferred to skip straight to his professional career, but that's just my personal preference。 If you're a fan of Ari Shapiro on NPR, you'll want to read this book。 This memoir starts at the beginning of his life, chronicling how he came out as gay as a teenager and began a life of "translating" and presenting cultures in front of groups of listeners。 The book is well written and interesting。 I would have preferred to skip straight to his professional career, but that's just my personal preference。 。。。more

Know the voice from NPR’s “All things considered” now I am more informed (and entertained) by the behind the scenes stories and origin story of Ari Shapiro。I listened to the story which is narrated by the author and I highly recommend “reading” this book by audio。

Happy Pub Day! This book was such an adventure to read。 Ari Shapiro is host of NPR’s All Things Considered with a resume full of meeting some of the biggest celebrities as well as some of the bravest refugees, those fighting for their lives and families, and fighting to have a better life。 Oh, and besides all that, he also is a singer in the band Pink Martini (if you don’t know that band I urge you to check them out right now!) and even did a cabaret with Alan Cummings。 Ari also speaks of growin Happy Pub Day! Possibly。 But if you’re in a non-fiction mood and want to be reminded that there is still good in humanity, I do urge you to check this one out。 Thank you HarperOne for the ARC! 。。。more

I didn't know Ari Shapiro really before this book。 I really liked the book and liked him。 He has an interesting perspective and good mix of ego and insecurity。 I liked most of the essays and a few I could've done without, but overall a strong collection。 I didn't know Ari Shapiro really before this book。 I really liked the book and liked him。 He has an interesting perspective and good mix of ego and insecurity。 I liked most of the essays and a few I could've done without, but overall a strong collection。 。。。more

Ari Shapiro's exceptional storytelling translates from broadcast to the written page in the captivating THE BEST STRANGERS IN THE WORLD。 Early on, Shapiro shares his tales of growing up as the in-between, the one who could translate and straddle different communities -- and this book is evidence of a storyteller who mesmerizes, delights, and helps make the world the smaller, more connected community he envisions for us。 To Shapiro, I would say, Thank you for writing -- I am honored to have read Ari Shapiro's exceptional storytelling translates from broadcast to the written page in the captivating THE BEST STRANGERS IN THE WORLD。 Early on, Shapiro shares his tales of growing up as the in-between, the one who could translate and straddle different communities -- and this book is evidence of a storyteller who mesmerizes, delights, and helps make the world the smaller, more connected community he envisions for us。 To Shapiro, I would say, Thank you for writing -- I am honored to have read your book。 I received a copy of this book and these opinions are my own, unbiased thoughts。 。。。more

A storied life indeed。 At times serious, with stories of encounters and on-the-ground reporting from wartime, to near present-day America, it seems Ari Shapiro has seen it all。 What charms me most as he reflected on his life, people he met, wild adventures, and stories he reported, is the ever-present grace and gratitude that is so evident in Ari’s telling。 You can also tell he’s quite fun。

Loved it。 Go get this one。 You know Ari Shapiro - or if you don’t, you know his voice on NPR’s All Things Considered。 After I said “ohhh THAT’S what he looks like!” I jumped into this lovely, smart, nuanced, raw book with great writing — loving story after story of his incredible start in life to his well-known career on NPR。 I loved reading about the feats and foibles - all rounding out to such a cool, smart, interesting, curious guy。 Learned a lot - related to a lot - and was inspired - a lot。 Loved it。 Go get this one。 You know Ari Shapiro - or if you don’t, you know his voice on NPR’s All Things Considered。 After I said “ohhh THAT’S what he looks like!” I jumped into this lovely, smart, nuanced, raw book with great writing — loving story after story of his incredible start in life to his well-known career on NPR。 I loved reading about the feats and foibles - all rounding out to such a cool, smart, interesting, curious guy。 Learned a lot - related to a lot - and was inspired - a lot。 Great book。 Thanks to Harper One for the advanced copy。 。。。more

Unsurprisingly I LOVED this。 I am a bit of a public radio nerd and so this was right in my wheelhouse。 What did surprise me though was while it does work so well as a traditional memoir, it also speaks so eloquently about both the value and importance of storytelling, highlighting both the power of traditional journalism as well as fiction。 I both laughed and cried。 Though in reality I probably cried much more because I am soft and these are the types of stories that always get me。 Also I think Unsurprisingly I LOVED this。 I am a bit of a public radio nerd and so this was right in my wheelhouse。 What did surprise me though was while it does work so well as a traditional memoir, it also speaks so eloquently about both the value and importance of storytelling, highlighting both the power of traditional journalism as well as fiction。 I both laughed and cried。 Though in reality I probably cried much more because I am soft and these are the types of stories that always get me。 Also I think you just gotta go with the audio option here, it was excellent。 Thanks so much to Libro。fm for providing me with an ALC。 。。。more

If you are already a fan of Ari Shapiro then unfortunately, this book will be a bit of a disappointment for you。 I was so excited to read it, but it let me down a bit。 Although there is some information about Ari's life outside of his constantly evolving role at NPR, there isn't much, which would have been the biggest appeal of this book。 I guess I assumed it was a memoir, but it isn't, it is mostly just a rehashing of Shapiro's favorite stories from his radio programs。 Since I've listened to NP If you are already a fan of Ari Shapiro then unfortunately, this book will be a bit of a disappointment for you。 I was so excited to read it, but it let me down a bit。 Although there is some information about Ari's life outside of his constantly evolving role at NPR, there isn't much, which would have been the biggest appeal of this book。 I guess I assumed it was a memoir, but it isn't, it is mostly just a rehashing of Shapiro's favorite stories from his radio programs。 Since I've listened to NPR for my entire life, I have heard all those stories。 Sometimes he will throw in a behind the scenes moment, like the time he was covering the Orlando nightclub shooting, and realized he had stumbled upon Pulse years earlier。 But these moments are few and far between。I really liked hearing more about his life, especially his childhood in North Dakota, and Portland, Oregon。 He was encouraged to indulge in all his interests, and to constantly ask questions, which would later become good habits for his journalism career。 I also liked hearing about his very sweet relationship with his husband, Mark, especially the story of the wedding they had in California。 Again, I wish there had been more of this。 Ari Shapiro seems very reluctant to look his personal life in the eye, and delve into it, which is fine I guess, but then the book reads very flat。 I have heard most of these stories through the radio already, and I liked them better when I heard Shapiro and the voices of his guests。 If I really wanted to, I could listen to the NPR archives again, and I would probably enjoy that better than this book。But if you know nothing about Ari Shapiro, or if you don't listen to NPR much, then you might get a kick out of this book。 It's well written, just a bit scattered and dull。 。。。more

As an avid NPR listener, you don’t often think about the people and lives behind the voices。 In "The Best Strangers in the World: Stories from a Life Spent Listening" by Ari Shapiro you get a glimpse and learn a little about a reporter’s life。First of all I was shocked to learn that Shapiro spent the first 8 years of his life in Fargo, ND。 As someone who grew up with Fargo as the “big city” they’d visit it blows my mind a little。 But it was also touching to hear about someone who was an outsider As an avid NPR listener, you don’t often think about the people and lives behind the voices。 In "The Best Strangers in the World: Stories from a Life Spent Listening" by Ari Shapiro you get a glimpse and learn a little about a reporter’s life。First of all I was shocked to learn that Shapiro spent the first 8 years of his life in Fargo, ND。 As someone who grew up with Fargo as the “big city” they’d visit it blows my mind a little。 But it was also touching to hear about someone who was an outsider, one of the only Jewish kids in a heavily Christian area of the country, to being an old gay teenager in the 90s, trying to start his schools first Gay Straight Alliance。 I was also aware that Shapiro sometimes performed with Pink Martini。 Getting the background of how that relationship started, and how that’s bloomed into another side act as a cabaret performer with Alan Cummings was entertaining and fun。But, perhaps the best part of the book is getting an understanding of how radio reporting for NPR works, seeing behind the scenes of how some of Shapiro’s most famous stories were captured, and finding out what subjects have made a lasting impression on his life。I received an ARC of "The Best Strangers in the World" for free, this had no bearing on my rating and review。 Thank you to NetGalley and HarperOne! 。。。more

I wanted to like this book so much more than I did, and I'm so sad about that。 I love Ari Shapiro's work on NPR and All Things Considered, and I am a sucker for journalism memoirs, especially when they are rooted in public information and stories of humanity。The chapters stood on their own as short explorations of specific topics, which sometimes can truly work in a book, but somehow, and maybe it was the sequencing, it didn't flow right。 Some of the chapters didn't feel like they held as much w I wanted to like this book so much more than I did, and I'm so sad about that。 I love Ari Shapiro's work on NPR and All Things Considered, and I am a sucker for journalism memoirs, especially when they are rooted in public information and stories of humanity。The chapters stood on their own as short explorations of specific topics, which sometimes can truly work in a book, but somehow, and maybe it was the sequencing, it didn't flow right。 Some of the chapters didn't feel like they held as much weight--and I'm not saying that, say, a chapter on covering DC politics is more important than the joys Shapiro felt in Pink Martini, but there was some disconnect for me that didn't let the book take off。And sometimes a storyteller is just better when heard out loud。 Maybe if I heard Shapiro reading the book instead of reading it on the page, I would have felt more connected。There were chapters that were absolute fives though。 Of course there were--it's Ari Shapiro。 Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advance reading copy in exchange for an honest review。 。。。more
