Summary

New York Times bestselling author and master of nonfiction spy thrillers Larry Loftis writes the first major biography of Corrie ten Boom, a Dutch watchmaker who saved the lives of hundreds of Jews during WWII--at the cost of losing her family and being sent to a concentration camp, only to survive, forgive her captors, and live the rest of her life as a Christian missionary。

The Watchmaker's Daughter is one of the greatest stories of World War II that readers haven't heard: the remarkable and inspiring life story of Corrie ten Boom--a groundbreaking, female Dutch watchmaker, whose family unselfishly transformed their house into a hiding place straight out of a spy novel to shelter Jews and refugees from the Nazis during Gestapo raids。 Even though the Nazis knew what the ten Booms were up to, they were never able to find those sheltered within the house when they raided it。

Corrie stopped at nothing to face down the evils of her time and overcame unbelievable obstacles and odds。 She persevered despite the loss of most of her family and relied on her faith to survive the horrors of a notorious concentration camp。 But even more remarkable than her heroism and survival was Corrie's attitude when she was released。 Miraculously, she was able to eschew bitterness and embrace forgiveness as she ministered to people in need around the globe。 Corrie's ability to forgive is just one of the myriad lessons that her life story holds for readers today。

Reminiscent of Schindler's List and featuring a journey of faith and forgiveness not unlike UnbrokenThe Watchmaker's Daughter is destined to become a classic work of World War II nonfiction。

The author did an amazing job researching and bringing the story of Corrie ten Boom to life。 Even the end pages offer more history, notes and an index。 The bravery of this woman is inspiring and a story future generations need to hear。 When you finish this book you will have tears in your eyes but feel lucky to hear the story。 A story I wish was not necessary but I am so honored to continue supporting her legacy。 Thank you to William Morrow, Larry Loftis and NetGalley for allowing me to review this arc。 All opinions are my own。 。。。more

The publicists are pushing hard the idea that this story has never been told。 I guess her story hasn't 'been told' until a man tells it? Probably because he couldn't use his first choice, 'The Blank Blank's Wife,' since she didn't marry。 (In 2023! Women have been loud about why those formulaic titles are dehumanizing for a good while now。)Male biographers of women, do better。 Larry Loftis, stop using women's stories for your own benefit if you can't even be bothered to write a title that respects the humanity of women。 Seriously。Publishers, do better。 I won't be buying anything else published by William Morrow。 。。。more

The Watchmaker's Daughter: The True Story of World War II Heroine Corrie ten Boom by Larry Loftis is a very highly recommended, moving biography of WWII Dutch resistance member Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983)。 Many will know her from her bestselling 1971 memoir, The Hiding Place。 The Watchmaker's Daughter retells her story and expands on it with many photos, dairies, and letters from people involved。Before WWII, Corrie worked in her father's shop in Haarlem repairing watches and went on to become a The Watchmaker's Daughter: The True Story of World War II Heroine Corrie ten Boom by Larry Loftis is a very highly recommended, moving biography of WWII Dutch resistance member Corrie ten Boom (1892-1983)。 Many will know her from her bestselling 1971 memoir, The Hiding Place。 The Watchmaker's Daughter retells her story and expands on it with many photos, dairies, and letters from people involved。Before WWII, Corrie worked in her father's shop in Haarlem repairing watches and went on to become a watchmaker herself。 From her family she learned early on to rely on her Christian faith in all things and this was put to the test in WWII during the German invasion of the Netherlands。 Corrie and her family became a part of the Dutch resistance and transformed their house into a hiding place straight into shelter for Jews and other refugees。 This selfless behavior resulted in her and her family being turned in and Corrie and her sister Betsie were sent to Ravensbrück, a concentration camp, where Betsie died。Corrie was eventually released and, even though she loss most of her family, her faith allowed her to forgive and to move on, providing witness about the Holocaust, and ministered to people in need。 Corrie set up rehabilitation centers to support survivors along with others whose lives were effected by the occupation。 She was honored as one of the "Righteous Among the Nations" by the Yad Vashem Authority in 1967。The Watchmaker's Daughter is a very well-researched, well-written, and thorough portrait of a woman who was a hero。 There is included at the end of the book a section called "The Rest of the Story,” which covers the accomplishments of those central to the overall Dutch World War II story and includes picture。 There is also an Appendix on refugees who stayed with the ten Booms, Bibliography, Notes, and Index。Even though I knew the story, I cried as I read The Watchmaker's Daughter and I was glued to the pages as I read Loftis' account of Corrie's life。 This is a story of faith and courage, at a great cost, that needs to be brought to the attention of people again。Disclosure: My review copy was courtesy of HarperCollins via Edelweiss。http://www。shetreadssoftly。com/2023/0。。。 。。。more

I read Corrie Ten Boom's The Hiding Place in high school and could not put that book down until I finished it。 So naturally when I came across the promise of a biography of her that gave even more information on her life I was desperate to get a hold of the ARC from Netgalley and thankfully the publisher granted my request。 Corrie Ten Boom was a Christian who worked as a watchmaker under her father in the Netherlands when WWII happened and the nazis took over her country。 Ten Boom and her family I read Corrie Ten Boom's The Hiding Place in high school and could not put that book down until I finished it。 So naturally when I came across the promise of a biography of her that gave even more information on her life I was desperate to get a hold of the ARC from Netgalley and thankfully the publisher granted my request。 Corrie Ten Boom was a Christian who worked as a watchmaker under her father in the Netherlands when WWII happened and the nazis took over her country。 Ten Boom and her family almost immediately began to offer aid to Jews fleeing the round ups as well as getting involved in the Dutch resistance。 Ten Boom's family even had a secret room created in Corrie's room that was accessed through a small door in the closet and so well hidden the Nazi's never found it。 They did however eventually close in on the family as working for the Resistance and Corrie, her sister and father were arrested。 Corrie and her sister were then sent to two concentration camps, the second being Ravensbruck where they witnessed true horrors。 Despite this the sisters began ministering to those suffering in the camp and afterwards, Corrie made a ministry of her story and of helping others similarly traumatized to heal。 Author Larry Loftis does a great job using The Hiding Place as a jumping off point but then adding in so much more detail both of historic import of what was going on around her including other Dutch citizens whose stories we know - Anne Frank and Audrey Hepburn both lived in the area - as well as adding in background on the Jews and resistance workers that hid in the secret room the Ten Booms christened the Angel's Den, and how their stories continued。 Loftis further follows Corrie's ministry and impressive array of speaking arrangements to tell her story in churches all over the world afterwards。 Loftis no doubt had quite a time piecing all the different stories together, but the result is an incredibly readable work of nonfiction that reads like fiction and is impossible to put down。 I've wanted to check out his writing for a while now and will be picking up his other books as well。 My thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review。 This is a book I plan to add to my collection。 。。。more

I read The Hiding Place when it was first published in paperback, then reread it a few months later。 I remember that telling of Corrie ten Boom's story as more descriptive of how the underground volunteers managed to move around occupied Haarlem, and shockingly graphic in describing what she saw and experienced in the concentration camp。 This more nuanced telling, with less focus on picturing the horrors of Ravensbruck and more on the relationships between the family members, their hidden guest I read The Hiding Place when it was first published in paperback, then reread it a few months later。 I remember that telling of Corrie ten Boom's story as more descriptive of how the underground volunteers managed to move around occupied Haarlem, and shockingly graphic in describing what she saw and experienced in the concentration camp。 This more nuanced telling, with less focus on picturing the horrors of Ravensbruck and more on the relationships between the family members, their hidden guests, and the various police, guards and confederates with whom they interacted, is chilling in a different way。 The more extended descriptions of life in the Beje are so relatable, so normal, highlighting the surreal transformation of life for people like you and me。 Emerging on the other side of WWII, the rest of ten Boom's life is a portrait of profound faith, service, and forgiveness。I'm grateful to have received an advance copy through a Goodreads giveaway。 Even if you (think you) know the ten Boom story, this is a compelling read。 。。。more

This is a great book filled with an amazing story about a woman who loved Jesus and began fighting the good fight against one of the greatest evils to ever exist, the German Nazis, at a time in life when most are looking to retirement。 She survived and spent her golden years traveling the world spreading the love of God and a message of forgiveness that seems radical, but at its heart, is truly biblical。 This is an easy read that flows well and most importantly, will touch your heart。 Definitely This is a great book filled with an amazing story about a woman who loved Jesus and began fighting the good fight against one of the greatest evils to ever exist, the German Nazis, at a time in life when most are looking to retirement。 She survived and spent her golden years traveling the world spreading the love of God and a message of forgiveness that seems radical, but at its heart, is truly biblical。 This is an easy read that flows well and most importantly, will touch your heart。 Definitely give it a read。 。。。more

I was delighted to win an early review copy of The Watchmaker's Daughter by Larry Loftis。 I had high expectations for a detailed, informative story of Corrie Ten Boom and her courageous experience during of the horrors of WWII。 While her story is certainly inspiring and one I had never heard before, I had a lot of trouble with the author's execution of the story。 Telling Corrie's story on its own would have been more than adequate, but instead the author tried to place her story along a timeline I was delighted to win an early review copy of The Watchmaker's Daughter by Larry Loftis。 I had high expectations for a detailed, informative story of Corrie Ten Boom and her courageous experience during of the horrors of WWII。 While her story is certainly inspiring and one I had never heard before, I had a lot of trouble with the author's execution of the story。 Telling Corrie's story on its own would have been more than adequate, but instead the author tried to place her story along a timeline and, as such, included long passages from Anne Frank's diary, commentary about Audrey Hepburn, and Bible passages。 Chapters are already very brief and these extra facts just pulled me away from the focus of the book。 I was never able to get into the book until the last few chapters that focused more exclusively on Corrie。 Unfortunately, this is not a book I can recommend。 It was so disjointed and choppy that I struggled to finish and only did so because it was a Goodreads' win。 I would, however, recommend that those interested search a bit on their own to discover the war efforts of Corrie Ten Boom。 。。。more

This book tells the story of Corrie ten Boom and her family's efforts in the Dutch Resistance during World War II。 They hid young "divers" who were being rounded up into forced labor and Jewish folks who were being arrested and sent to concentration camps。 It tells of their life prior to Nazi occupation, their work in the resistance and how they helped many people over time, their arrest, time in concentration camps, and ultimately how these experiences strengthened Corrie's own christian faith。 This book tells the story of Corrie ten Boom and her family's efforts in the Dutch Resistance during World War II。 They hid young "divers" who were being rounded up into forced labor and Jewish folks who were being arrested and sent to concentration camps。 It tells of their life prior to Nazi occupation, their work in the resistance and how they helped many people over time, their arrest, time in concentration camps, and ultimately how these experiences strengthened Corrie's own christian faith。 The story is contextualized with asides about other well known stories from this time including Audrey Hepburn and Anne Frank。The book is billed as a non-fiction thriller。 It is based on historical research and Corrie's own writings。 It is a true story written much more like a novel。 It is a very quick, easy, and compelling read。 It has the gut punches expected in a story from WWII。 However that style of writing sometimes creates a disconnect from the real events because it would be punctuated with narrative flourishes that seemed like fictional tropes or were outright incorrect。 This made it hard to trust the veracity。 I wasn't very familiar with the story of the ten Booms and I am very glad to know it now。 I was prepared to have this book take me a while to get through because of the subject matter and needing breaks。 But it is incredibly engaging。 I just don't know exactly what parts to believe other than the general events and feel I need to read a second book on the subject to really know for sure。 。。。more

Yes。 Loftis, however, focuses on getting from point A to point B。 No embellishment。 No “bedazzle。” If you prefer biographies that read more like a novel, The Watchmaker’s Daughter by Larry Loftis is not for you。 When I read the book, I had to be alone with the TV off。 If something distracted me, it took me a while to fall back into his rhythm。By the time I finished The Watchmaker’s Daughter, I fell in love with it。 It took me maybe a week to read the first thirty percent of Loftis’s book, but I read the rest of it in one day。 Something that helped immensely: the pictures。 There is no mention of pictures in the book’s description, but I wish there was。 I would have picked it up if only for the photos。 Loftis extensively researched Corrie ten Boom, her home’s hidden residents, her family, and her time in the concentration camp。 Some details were hard to read, though that is no surprise with anything surrounding the Holocaust。 But I loved the pictures; they allowed me to put faces to names。 Places and spaces to descriptions。 While I of course knew I was reading a biography, the photos made everything more real。The Watchmaker’s Daughter by Larry Loftis is an informative book that speaks to Corrie ten Boom’s robust faith in the worst crises。 Not only that, it opens the world’s eyes to the courage of her family members and friends, and the horrors everyone suffered during World War II。 The book, however, lacks character。 Let me reiterate: It is factual。 It takes readers through a timeline and adds little to it。 If you are a history buff, you may like The Watchmaker’s Daughter as I did。 If, however, you cannot adjust to the lack of…I don’t know, personality, the book isn’t for you。 You might find it more boring than interesting。*Note: I received a free copy of this novel from the publisher in exchange for my honest review。 All views expressed are my own。 。。。more

This is a very interesting book with numerous details about this courageous woman and her brave family。 The timeline of events is helpful to understanding these historical events。 Enjoyable to read。 Captivating… right to the very end!The Watchmakers Daughter” by Larry Loftis would be an excellent book for high school or college history class, book clubs, and libraries。 The writing and attention to detail are superb quality。 It would be an excellent gift for someone who enjoys WW2 history。I received an Advanced Reader Copy of this book from Netgalley and purchased a copy for my library。 。。。more
