Summary

From the Eisner-nominated duo behind the instant bestseller Allergic comes a fun new graphic novel about finding your own space… especially when you're in a family of nine!

Eleven-year-old Avery Lee loves living in Hickory Valley, Maryland。 She loves her neighborhood, school, and the end-of-summer fair she always goes to with her two best friends。 But she's tired of feeling squished by her six siblings! They're noisy and chaotic and the younger kids love her a little too much。 All Avery wants is her own room -- her own space to be alone and make art。 So she's furious when Theo, her grumpy older brother, gets his own room instead, and her wild baby brother, Max, moves into the room she already shares with her clinging sister Pearl! Avery hatches a plan to finally get her own room, all while trying to get Max to sleep at night, navigating changes in her friendships, and working on an art entry for the fair。 And when Avery finds out that her family might move across the country, things get even more complicated。

Megan Wagner Lloyd and Michelle Mee Nutter have once again teamed up to tell a funny, heartfelt, and charming story of family, friendship, and growing up。

The definition of what constitutes a “large” family varies depending on your community。 Where I live, having six or seven siblings isn’t unheard of。 There are five kids in my own family。 And if you’ve ever lived in such a family, Squished will definitely resonate。Avery is the second child and the oldest of the girls。 As one of the older kids, she’s expected to take on some of the responsibility and make room for the little ones。 She loves her family, but just wants some space to explore her own The definition of what constitutes a “large” family varies depending on your community。 Where I live, having six or seven siblings isn’t unheard of。 There are five kids in my own family。 And if you’ve ever lived in such a family, Squished will definitely resonate。Avery is the second child and the oldest of the girls。 As one of the older kids, she’s expected to take on some of the responsibility and make room for the little ones。 She loves her family, but just wants some space to explore her own interests and dreams in relative quiet。In Squished, Megan Wagner Lloyd and Michelle Mee Nutter have created a charming story of a family facing change。 It’s lovely to see the disfunction that happens in even the most loving families play across the pages。 The dynamics between siblings — and how they play out depending on age — are spot on。 And the expectations and judgements from a social perspective ring true。Inviting artwork and well-thought-out text really bring this story to life。 Squished is a heartfelt story that finds humor in the everyday。 It’s fast paced and a good choice for graphic novel readers who are drawn to contemporary fiction。 。。。more

If you like books by Megan Wagner Lloyd or Michelle Mee Nutter, you'll like this book! It had an excellent overall plot, but it did feel a bit jumpy in that the main goal or thing they wanted for the main character (Avery) would change often。 Personally, I found Avery not to be a great character。 But this will be good for you if you like books about young girls going through friend and family mishaps。 If you like books by Megan Wagner Lloyd or Michelle Mee Nutter, you'll like this book! Having loved Lloyd's graphic novel, Allergic, I was excited to read Squished。 The illustrations in the graphic novel format were great, but the story seemed to be lacking。 The family dynamic was great, but I wanted more a more in-depth plot。 However, elementary and middle school students will enjoy this book if they are fans of her previous book or fans of books such as Smile, Camp, etc。 Having loved Lloyd's graphic novel, Allergic, I was excited to read Squished。 The illustrations in the graphic novel format were great, but the story seemed to be lacking。 The family dynamic was great, but I wanted more a more in-depth plot。 However, elementary and middle school students will enjoy this book if they are fans of her previous book or fans of books such as Smile, Camp, etc。 。。。more

Man, I can relate to growing up in a large family and wanting your own space! Add to that moving to a new school and you have a recipe for drama。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Another great graphic novel by Megan Wagner Lloyd and Michelle Mee Nutter! This graphic novel deals with a lot of tough stuff for kids like moving, family, friendships, and growing apart。 I love how genuine the characters felt and how the situations were handled。 I’m glad Avery finally got her space in the end!

A fun graphic novel for MG readers and beyond。 Dive right into the Lee family chaos! Avery has six siblings and is dying for some space to call her own。 She’ll do almost anything to get her own room, but will her efforts work? Stunning illustrations, lots of laughs, and some suspense too!

This is a fun and heart-warming story about navigating life as a member of a big family。 Avery, one of seven siblings, loves her siblings, but wants a room of her own where she can have some space to herself。 Instead, her older brother gets his own room and her younger brother is moved to hers。 She has a plan to get her own room, but nothing seems to go right。 Fans of realistic graphic novels will love this one。

** I received a free DRC from the publisher because I am a librarian and librarians are awesome **Whoosh。 There's a lot going on in this one - seven siblings, lite friend drama, friction with parents, entrepreneurship, losing friends/bullying, moving, even missing kids! Like Allergic, the illustrations are super attractive, and I think your 8-11 year old tweens are going to eat this one up。 The chaos of the family and Avery's overwhelm as big sibling in charge is palpable, and the illustrations ** I received a free DRC from the publisher because I am a librarian and librarians are awesome **Whoosh。 There's a lot going on in this one - seven siblings, lite friend drama, friction with parents, entrepreneurship, losing friends/bullying, moving, even missing kids! Like Allergic, the illustrations are super attractive, and I think your 8-11 year old tweens are going to eat this one up。 The chaos of the family and Avery's overwhelm as big sibling in charge is palpable, and the illustrations do a lot capture the whirlwind that is being the second oldest in a 9 person family。 However, I felt like there were just a few too many threads happening in this story of one summer in one family's life and would have liked to see more focus on one or two of them。 The good news is that all the threads captured what it's like to be a complicated, messy family, and I think that's what most young readers will come away with, rather than wondering why Avery was so quick to accept some big changes。 As a parent, though, I felt like a lot of the resolutions were MUCH too easy。 (Or maybe it's just my spirited child talking。) It'll be a hot read this spring/summer for sure, just based on illustration quality alone。 But to the adult reader, it's no BSC or Ten Kids No Pets。 。。。more

ARC provided by the Publisher。When I saw Squished and found out that the collaborative team who provided us with Allergic was once again teaming up in this graphic, I couldn't wait to pick it up。 Another heartwarming coming-of-age story told from the point of view of Avery Lee, one of many Lee’s that we will meet in this story and her struggle to find her place and space in a large family。 I enjoyed the dynamics of seeing the interactions between siblings, the parents, and even the how outsiders ARC provided by the Publisher。When I saw Squished and found out that the collaborative team who provided us with Allergic was once again teaming up in this graphic, I couldn't wait to pick it up。 Another heartwarming coming-of-age story told from the point of view of Avery Lee, one of many Lee’s that we will meet in this story and her struggle to find her place and space in a large family。 I enjoyed the dynamics of seeing the interactions between siblings, the parents, and even the how outsiders viewed a large family。 While short there was great growth in the characters throughout the graphic。 Something else I would like to mention, that with this being an ARC and not in it’s final draft, it was interesting to see the artwork in multiple stages。 I can't wait to see the final draft when it is printed。 A great read for anyone who struggled to find themselves even when they weren't truly lost。 。。。more

Super enjoyed this graphic novel (from the creators who also wrote & illustrated ALLERGIC) about a large family and the good and the bad of having siblings!

Such a fun story about a large family and the struggles that come with that。 As someone who grew up with a larger family, it was very relatable。 I enjoyed seeing the different relationships that Avery had with each of her siblings。 A strong message of family being constant despite other changes that happen in life。 This graphic novel will be loved by middle grade readers!

E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusAvery Lee is a thoughtful and artistic tween who values her quiet time and privacy。 She doesn't get much of it because she has six brothers and sisters。 Older brother Theo is getting his own room, but this means that Avery has to punk with Pearl and her toddler brother Max。 She also frequently watches preschoolers Juliet and Josie, as well as baby Bea。 Her father is a high school teacher, and her mother is gonig to school to learn coding, so things are always busy E ARC provided by Edelweiss PlusAvery Lee is a thoughtful and artistic tween who values her quiet time and privacy。 She doesn't get much of it because she has six brothers and sisters。 Older brother Theo is getting his own room, but this means that Avery has to punk with Pearl and her toddler brother Max。 She also frequently watches preschoolers Juliet and Josie, as well as baby Bea。 Her father is a high school teacher, and her mother is gonig to school to learn coding, so things are always busy。 She likes to hang out with her best friends, Cameron (whose mother is their elementary school principal!) and Dani, and is looking forward to going to the Hickory Valley fair in her Maryland town。 She even is thinking about submitting some of her artwork, if she can find the time to create some when she is not exhausted from Max being up at night! She tries to earn money so that she can convince her parents to let her set up a bedroom in the basement, but there are bigger issues confronting the Lee family。 While change can be difficult, Avery and her brother work together to make this important transition easier for the entire family。 Strengths: There is something appealing about large families, especially now that there are not as many of them as when my mother was growing up in the 1940s with eight siblings! Certainly, my Gen X friends and I, all of whom seemed to have just one sibling, adored the chaotic household of The Brady Bunch。 What makes Avery's story particularly appealing is that she enjoys her family, who present as Asian, for all the grief they sometimes cause her。 She's patient with Max and Peal even though she wants her own room。 She used to play a lot with Theo before he became a teen, and the two do band together when it's necessary。 She is frequently pictured holding Bea, and clearly has a lot of affection for her。 There is an illuminative conversation with her mother about WHY there are so many children, and aside from wanting her own room, Avery doesn't have issues with her parents, and doesn't fight with them。 She lives in an enjoyable community and has some good friends。 Again, the appeal of the Bradys was that while they did have problems, they weren't MY problems, and they weren't so bad that just reading about them made me feel traumatized。 This will be a wildly popular book with my students。 Weaknesses: I almost wish that this had been a blended family, because we do see some larger sibling groups, but they are almost always combinations of children who share parents when they are not members of the LDS Church。What I really think: Definitely purchasing, since it will see steady circulation along with this duo's Allergic and other graphic novels with family drama like Harper's Bad Sister, Fajardo's Miss Quinces, Russo's Why Is Everybody Yelling? Growing Up in My Immigrant Family, Jeong's Kyle's Little Sister, Edwards' A Tale as Tall as Jacob: Misadventures with My Brother and Knisley's Stepping Stones。 。。。more

Family dynamics shine here, and Avery is a great example of a great kid with heavy expectations and a lot of responsibility put upon her。 I read from an uncolored arc, but even in its unfinished form, the art shines; the facial expressions alone capture so much。

I really enjoyed the book Squished because I love a good book about family。 I loved how Avery was always so helpful to her parents and siblings and took charge to show that she can get her own room。I am always excited to read this book and I hope that other people will read it too!

i absolutely loved this story!! i was so invested—even ten pages in, i was rooting so hard for avery to get her own room。 i adored the different dynamics with all of her siblings and getting to see them all grow as characters and people。 not related to the story, but getting to read an ARC was so cool because not all of the art was finalized, so getting to see the progression of graphic novels was a bonus i hadn’t even thought about!!!
