The book was ok。 Then ending felt very rushed though ⭐️⭐️

Taylor before "the event" and after it are two different people, yet also still the same。 I enjoyed reading about her journey through her journal prompts which alternated between "Fall" (before the tragedy) and "Winter" (after )。 Englund masterfully unveils the details of the life-changing night and with beautiful prose and descriptions of not only the beauty of Hawaii, but also the realities of living there。 While sobering at times, the story is also uplifting as the reader experiences how a gi Taylor before "the event" and after it are two different people, yet also still the same。 I enjoyed reading about her journey through her journal prompts which alternated between "Fall" (before the tragedy) and "Winter" (after )。 Englund masterfully unveils the details of the life-changing night and with beautiful prose and descriptions of not only the beauty of Hawaii, but also the realities of living there。 While sobering at times, the story is also uplifting as the reader experiences how a girl and her family work through their grief and ultimately arrive at a hopeful place by the end。 。。。more

Moving and honest, TAYLOR BEFORE AND AFTER beautifully charts the aftermath of a life-altering accident and a move from hopelessness to healing。 Jennie Englund perfectly captures the shifting allegiances and social dramas of adolescence。 And, as a devoted journal writer, I love how writing helps Taylor heal and move toward hope。 Highly recommended!

I tried, I really did, but I could not find one thing I liked about this book。

This was a good story dealing with the feelings of teenagers, friends, acceptance, responsibility。 Well written and I enjoyed the premise of the school class lesson of journal writing, putting your thoughts and feelings on paper

This is an incredible book that truly captures the realities of a young girls mindset。 A must read!

This book stands out for several reasons, two of which push Taylor Before and After up to the level of a 'must read。' Taylor's voice is authentic。 Vulnerable, angry, sad, ecstatic, depressed-- all the voices of a struggling teenager。 I was able to see what Taylor sees and feel what she feels。 This is a tribute to Jennie Englund's attention to the details in her writing。 A second attribute worthy of high praise goes to the structure of the book。 I found it wholly authentic。 As a writer myself, I This book stands out for several reasons, two of which push Taylor Before and After up to the level of a 'must read。' Taylor's voice is authentic。 Vulnerable, angry, sad, ecstatic, depressed-- all the voices of a struggling teenager。 I was able to see what Taylor sees and feel what she feels。 This is a tribute to Jennie Englund's attention to the details in her writing。 A second attribute worthy of high praise goes to the structure of the book。 I found it wholly authentic。 As a writer myself, I can't imagine pulling off a book using this structure。 Not only did Englund do it, she nailed it。 。。。more

The unraveling of things was sad, and the mysteries surrounding Brielle were interesting to watch unfold。 It just makes me very very grateful to be a decade removed from high school and all of this nonsense。

A wonderful book that had me hooked from the beginning。

I can see that it shows how social media bullying occurs (and it was interesting to see how girls self-censor what they post out of fear of what someone thinks) and I see how it's good to show how depression can be handled, but the book was just so slow。 I would recommend this to a teenager who was also experiencing a major event (family drama) but I don't think I would recommend it to very many others。 The things I did enjoy: The writing prompts- This could easily to borrowed for class activiti I can see that it shows how social media bullying occurs (and it was interesting to see how girls self-censor what they post out of fear of what someone thinks) and I see how it's good to show how depression can be handled, but the book was just so slow。 I would recommend this to a teenager who was also experiencing a major event (family drama) but I don't think I would recommend it to very many others。 The things I did enjoy: The writing prompts- This could easily to borrowed for class activities。 Taylor's self-prescribed "medication"- st。 john's wort, blueberries, getting outside, trying something new。 。。。more

Told in little pieces, in journal entries that jump from before and after the tragedy that pulled her life apart, Taylor explores the impacts of grief, pain, mental illness, bullying, and scandal during her 8th grade year。 Quite a page-turner。

Like the title suggests, TAYLOR BEFORE AND AFTER is told in alternating chapters that vacillate between then (before the incident that shattered her life) and now (the aftermath)。 It's a structure I usually like because it creates suspense, but in this case, it just makes for a really confusing story。 Adding to the problem is Taylor's random lists of words and thoughts, as well as fragmented flashbacks, some of which really made no sense to me。 It all left me feeling a little dizzy, honestly。 I Like the title suggests, TAYLOR BEFORE AND AFTER is told in alternating chapters that vacillate between then (before the incident that shattered her life) and now (the aftermath)。 It's a structure I usually like because it creates suspense, but in this case, it just makes for a really confusing story。 Adding to the problem is Taylor's random lists of words and thoughts, as well as fragmented flashbacks, some of which really made no sense to me。 It all left me feeling a little dizzy, honestly。 I didn't love the characters in TAYLOR BEFORE AND AFTER either。 Taylor is sympathetic, but her shallowness makes her hard to like at times。 She does grow throughout the novel, which makes her more likable。 Still, I never felt very connected to her。 For a MG story, this one also has a fair amount of "mature" content that seemed more suitable to a YA book。 I'd give it a PG-13 rating for sexual innuendo, crudeness, and language (although the profanity is "bleeped" out)。 On the plus side, the novel has a strong sense of place。 Oahu comes alive in the book and not just as a paradise where everything's always hunky-dory。 Also, Taylor's raw emotions show the effects of bullying—on both the victim and the bully—in an effective way。 Through this depiction, the story teaches some important lessons about kindness, empathy, forgiveness, and acceptance。 It also talks about issues like depression, suicidal thoughts, and hopelessness, encouraging readers to reach out and get help when they're feeling that kind of heaviness。 All things considered, TAYLOR EVER AFTER was just an average read for me。 I found it unfocused, confusing, and, frankly, depressing。 If I hadn't been reading it for a book awards competition, I probably would have DNF'd it。 。。。more

This book was honestly beautiful。 I had the wonderful opportunity to meet the author and talk to them! They were truly one of the sweetest people I've ever met。 They were very open to questions and so proud that me and my friends had been able to read a book of this style。Books of this writing style aren't very common in this world。 I will say, it is difficult to read。 But, I really learned to love this style! Taylor is an 8th grader living in Hawaii who writes journal entries for a class at her pricey Catholic school。 She is obsessed with fashion, the ups and downs of her friendship circle, and reality TV。 She is also troubled by her angry dad, depressed mom, and reckless older brother。 The principal story revolves around an initially-unspecified tragedy that befalls her brother, and how that affects her standing in the 8th-grade friendship competition。I'm not in the YA demographic so I hate to judge Taylor is an 8th grader living in Hawaii who writes journal entries for a class at her pricey Catholic school。 She is obsessed with fashion, the ups and downs of her friendship circle, and reality TV。 She is also troubled by her angry dad, depressed mom, and reckless older brother。 The principal story revolves around an initially-unspecified tragedy that befalls her brother, and how that affects her standing in the 8th-grade friendship competition。I'm not in the YA demographic so I hate to judge a book meant to console troubled tweens when I'm just a troubled grandpa。 But to me the book was dull and uneventful, and Taylor too shallow to be engaging。 。。。more

This book was *not* what I expected, for whatever reason, because who knows what I was expecting, but yes! It's a five! I loved reading this insightful and deeply relatable novel。 This book weaves together the emotional complex of being a young person faced with personal tragedy and a limited support system concisely and insightfully。 I wish I had read more books like this as a young person。

It may or may not have given me the urge to move to Hawaii permanently。。。 All in all, I highly recommend this book。 It is clean and simple enough for a younger reader to understand, and yet not childish or "beneath" older readers。 Part of PopSugar 2021 Reading Challenge: A book with fewer than 1,000 reviews on Goodreads or Amazon 。。。more

From its very first page, the touching, beautifully written TAYLOR BEFORE AND AFTER by Jennie Englund pulled me in and wouldn't let go。 The story darts back and forth in time over a period of months as we get to know middle-schooler Taylor Harper, who's working to fit in, all the while facing family dynamics, complicated friendships, mental health struggles, and, well, being an early teen。 The brother character and his relationship with Taylor is particularly well drawn and quite moving。 Taylor' From its very first page, the touching, beautifully written TAYLOR BEFORE AND AFTER by Jennie Englund pulled me in and wouldn't let go。 The story darts back and forth in time over a period of months as we get to know middle-schooler Taylor Harper, who's working to fit in, all the while facing family dynamics, complicated friendships, mental health struggles, and, well, being an early teen。 The brother character and his relationship with Taylor is particularly well drawn and quite moving。 Taylor's fashion observations and love of reality TV shows make the book funny and very relatable, no matter what age the reader, although like others, I found myself wondering if it might be more for young adults。 It certainly will appeal to anyone who appreciates a good story about overcoming and emerging from difficult times。 I loved this heartfelt, hopeful tale and highly recommend it! 。。。more

Structurally interesting, both for being written as diary entries and for presenting the entries out of chronological order to reveal how one event can so drastically change a life。Taylor is a socially attentive young person: fashion-aware, brand-conscious, but more than that, she's concerned with her friends。 Her friendship struggles are ordinary on one level, yet some of the challenges the girls face are unusually steep, and these losses layer into each other。 Nothing is quite so simple as it Structurally interesting, both for being written as diary entries and for presenting the entries out of chronological order to reveal how one event can so drastically change a life。Taylor is a socially attentive young person: fashion-aware, brand-conscious, but more than that, she's concerned with her friends。 Her friendship struggles are ordinary on one level, yet some of the challenges the girls face are unusually steep, and these losses layer into each other。 Nothing is quite so simple as it seems。On one occasion, Taylor writes in her journal: “I wish I’d never met her。 Brielle Branson isn’t even human。 She’s a monster。 She doesn’t have any feelings inside。” But on another, she reminisces: “I remember how it was having the group,” asking whether “it would have been better to never have been inside at all。”This is for young readers, but "old" readers, too, may readily identify with this ambivalence from season to season: what seems like the right and proper way things are and will always be, a reasonably happy state of affairs, quickly turns to frustration and disappointment and then to nostalgia for the supposedly uncomplicated and happier era。 The out-of-order presentation of the journal entries — "Before and After" as the title has it — emphasizes this back-and-forth nature of our internal dialogues and makes for a deeper experience。 。。。more

I was recently lucky to receive the poignant middle grade novel TAYLOR BEFORE AND AFTER by Jennie Englund。 This is a nuanced story about a flawed but loving family enduring a particularly tough time, with finely-wrought characters in a richly rendered Hawaiian setting。

Taylor tells the story of before and after a fatal car accident that happened when her brother Eli was driving。 Told in a series of responses to writing prompts, Taylor is very honest and open。 She shares how she was so eager to be in the popular crowd that when Brielle Branson starts being nice to her, she doesn't always do the right thing。 She worries about her mother, and how she doesn't get out of bed anymore。 She tells how her father, a college professor, is always yelling or working。 She m Taylor tells the story of before and after a fatal car accident that happened when her brother Eli was driving。 Told in a series of responses to writing prompts, Taylor is very honest and open。 She shares how she was so eager to be in the popular crowd that when Brielle Branson starts being nice to her, she doesn't always do the right thing。 She worries about her mother, and how she doesn't get out of bed anymore。 She tells how her father, a college professor, is always yelling or working。 She mentions her grandmother, who is holding the family together financially。 She talks about Hawaii, and that it's not quite the paradise that is portrayed to tourists。 She writes about Eli, her surfer brother who was driving his friend's Jeep the night of the accident。 How she is mad at him, hates him even, because of what he's done。 But also how he has covered for her, and for others; how Eli and her father fight。 But most of all, she writes about what she is feeling。 How she is anxious, can't remember things from school, gets headaches now, feels like her chest is being crushed。 Debut author Jennie Englund does an excellent job handling the issue of mental health, treating it as serious but not stigmatizing it。 The author's note at the end of the book includes resources for teens that are in crisis or contemplating suicide。 Ultimately hopeful, this book does not sugar coat or glamorize any of the hard issues that it contemplates, but is matter of fact and age appropriate。 Recommended for grades 8 and up。 。。。more
