Another work of historical fiction written by one of my favorite authors, and it kept me on the edge of my seat。 Hannah has lost her fiancée and unborn child when the Nazis found the printing press they were using。 Able to escape to her cousin in Belgium, where the Nazis had not yet started to deport Jews, Hannah reunites with Lily。 Lily, the wife of a doctor, does not realize the immediacy of the threat of the Nazis until it’s too late。 Hannah joins the Resistance, a group led by brother and si Another work of historical fiction written by one of my favorite authors, and it kept me on the edge of my seat。 Hannah has lost her fiancée and unborn child when the Nazis found the printing press they were using。 Able to escape to her cousin in Belgium, where the Nazis had not yet started to deport Jews, Hannah reunites with Lily。 Lily, the wife of a doctor, does not realize the immediacy of the threat of the Nazis until it’s too late。 Hannah joins the Resistance, a group led by brother and sister, Matteo and Micheline。 The bravery and sacrifice of the characters in the book are hard to imagine in the midst of such terrible events。 I also appreciate the author outlining where her story departs from the actual historical events and places。 Highly recommend。 Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC。 。。。more

Another historical fiction WWII story from Pam Jenoff。 Great reading and family-oriented story that shows many sides of what the Europeans of various backgrounds faced during Hitler's reign。 Another historical fiction WWII story from Pam Jenoff。 Great reading and family-oriented story that shows many sides of what the Europeans of various backgrounds faced during Hitler's reign。 。。。more

Pam Jenoff has once again written a novel that I could not put down while reading。 A cousin must save her cousin and son from the train headed to Auschwitz as they will be gassed to death。 It is a daring rescue that has many twists and turns。

I've read so many books with the same story line。 The characters and writing weren't quite as engaging and interesting as the others I have read。 I've read so many books with the same story line。 The characters and writing weren't quite as engaging and interesting as the others I have read。 。。。more

I enjoyed reading this book about the Sapphire Line, a group of resisters in Belgium, who helped get downed pilots out of the Nazi occupied country。 I love the fact the leader of the group was a woman。 I would give the book 5 stars but was not thrilled with the ending。

This is my favorite book so far this year! Suspenseful, tragic, emotional, and based on some true stories。 I've only read one other Jenoff book, but I must now read some others that are well read。 This followed a rescue (resistance) line during WW2, that worked to return downed airmen to their countries safely。 A 23 year old woman, Micheline, is in charge of the network。 There are some real surprises as the story goes on, as they focus on helping to save Hannah's cousin and child from deportatio This is my favorite book so far this year! World War II fiction can often be hit or miss for me because there are so many stories from this particular time period。 When a story offers a piece of history that I'm not very familiar with and it is well-researched, then I know it's a story that I will like。 Pam Jenoff writes a wonderful tale of three very different but very brave women in Nazi-occupied Belgium。 What I liked about this book:I love stories that feature stories of heroic women and this really delivers。 All three women, though v World War II fiction can often be hit or miss for me because there are so many stories from this particular time period。 When a story offers a piece of history that I'm not very familiar with and it is well-researched, then I know it's a story that I will like。 Pam Jenoff writes a wonderful tale of three very different but very brave women in Nazi-occupied Belgium。 What I liked about this book:I love stories that feature stories of heroic women and this really delivers。 All three women, though very different, show bravery in so many ways and I enjoyed each of their perspectives and stories。 This book features a piece of World War II history that I was unfamiliar with involving the transportation of Jewish families via train to Auschwitz and once I read that particular scene, I had to know more。 I always appreciate when books send me on my own research journey to learn more about a topic。 Finally, the last 30-40% of this book was so gripping and it was impossible to put down。 There was just enough mystery to keep the reader completely immersed。What I didn't like about this book:The first half of the book moved slowly for me and there were a few elements that I felt unnecessary to the story。 I also would have liked more of Micheline's storyline though I understand why her character needed to be more mysterious。Overall, I thought the author told a wonderful story and I would certainly read more of her books。 Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the free advanced digital copy of this book。 。。。more

The Nightingale and the Alice Network preceded this。 The former was amazing。 The latter just okay。 This one wasn’t even close to the level of the okay one。Also I hate love triangles。 Hate them even more when one of the people in it is married already。 And even more when two of them are related。

I have been reading historical fiction books about WW1 and WW11 for several years。 I have read others by Pam Jenoff, but this seems to be a super read and on e of her best! I read it in two days and could not stop。 There were many twists and turns of the numerous plots and they all were riveting and spell bounding。 Thanx Bunches for this amazing read!!!

2。5⭐️ rounded up。 While I had initially thought a WW2 setting in Belgium would be a good new perspective, the writing was very 2-dimensional, clunky and mostly void of emotion and description。 Without the detail and description as a whole it felt very surface level。 To follow the interaction and dialogue, you didn’t know what the characters were really feeling most of the time, which made their conversation feel stilted or jump back and forth without any continuity, or just plain odd。 You had to 2。5⭐️ rounded up。 While I had initially thought a WW2 setting in Belgium would be a good new perspective, the writing was very 2-dimensional, clunky and mostly void of emotion and description。 Without the detail and description as a whole it felt very surface level。 To follow the interaction and dialogue, you didn’t know what the characters were really feeling most of the time, which made their conversation feel stilted or jump back and forth without any continuity, or just plain odd。 You had to sort of infer what they were all feeling at any given moment。 And the whole situation with Matteo and Lily was both confusing and felt petty and juvenile。 Without that emotional context, it made it sound like she didn’t love Nik at all and was in a loveless marriage, but then it’s stated towards the end she did…?? Which then made her character super distasteful to me。 Also so many weird discrepancies or lack of context that felt unrealistic: Hannah was in the resistance in Germany for years but at the first opportunity shared every possible name and info to Lily。 The carelessness of the ID situation, the lack of vetting for their members and complete lack of being covert, other careless or deliberate situations (so as not to spoil it) etc。 I wish I enjoyed this more as l have others of Ms Jennoff’s but I was not a fan。 。。。more

Pam Jenoff does it again with another amazing WWII historical fiction。 This book is about a fictional resistance line called Sapphire Blue and how these women contributed and impacted by it。 I love seeing Hannah and Lily's relationship bloomed and was so sad to see read how torn Hannah was with her actions and how it impacted Lily's family。 There was some unexpected turns in the books and there is one scene that broke my heart。 I admire the resilience of these characters。 Pam Jenoff does it again with another amazing WWII historical fiction。 This book is about a fictional resistance line called Sapphire Blue and how these women contributed and impacted by it。 I love seeing Hannah and Lily's relationship bloomed and was so sad to see read how torn Hannah was with her actions and how it impacted Lily's family。 There was some unexpected turns in the books and there is one scene that broke my heart。 I admire the resilience of these characters。 。。。more

I found this audiobook difficult to listen to because of the narrator。 At times I found it boring, even though it was a good story。 It had good characters, a good plot, and even a twist I never saw coming。 At these end, I thought it was pretty good。 For me, I think I would have rated it higher had I actually read the book instead of listened to the audio version。 I had to look up the narrator so I know not to listen to any of her other works。

Fans of Pam Jenoff know that her historical novels are enthralling and feature admirable, sympathetic characters。 CODE NAME SAPPHIRE introduces readers to three such women, whose bravery, determination and strength are fully tested during the harsh and cruel Nazi rule in WWII。Micheline is a Frenchwoman who, with her brother Matteo, runs a resistance network smuggling fallen British and French airmen out of Nazi-occupied areas through Spain so they can continue the fight against Hitler。 Hannah is Fans of Pam Jenoff know that her historical novels are enthralling and feature admirable, sympathetic characters。 CODE NAME SAPPHIRE introduces readers to three such women, whose bravery, determination and strength are fully tested during the harsh and cruel Nazi rule in WWII。Micheline is a Frenchwoman who, with her brother Matteo, runs a resistance network smuggling fallen British and French airmen out of Nazi-occupied areas through Spain so they can continue the fight against Hitler。 Hannah is 10 years older than Micheline。 She lost her husband to the Nazis while they were working in the resistance together in Berlin。 Hannah was on a ship that was sent back to Europe when Cuba decided not to allow the refugees to land。 She is desperate to leave for America as the Nazis know she was responsible for creating anti-Hitler propaganda。 She finds refuge in Brussels with her cousin, Lily, and Lily’s husband, who is a doctor。 However, their lives are put in danger not just because of the Nazis, but due to their own actions。Jenoff tells the story through the voices of each woman。 While the narrative is in third person, each chapter is clearly labeled with the name of the character from whose point of view it is told。 Thus we learn of Lily's reluctance to do anything that might change the status quo of her comfortable life。 So far, the Nazi occupation has not altered her day-to-day existence much as she lives in her beautiful neighborhood, shops at stores where there is plenty of food, and is able to attend cultural events with her husband。 Hannah knows better。 She saw what happened in Germany and understands that once the Nazi occupation has begun, it's just a matter of time before all Jews feel the lash of the fascist whip。 Micheline is only in her early 20s but has dedicated her life to helping the resistance and has become the leader of a branch。From the first page, when Micheline spontaneously enables and executes the rescue of a downed soldier, we are hooked。 The action is virtually nonstop, but with Jenoff's very capable writing, the nail-biting suspense doesn't detract from the character-building that gives us insight into the three women and why they make the decisions that define them。 She takes us from the society drawing rooms that Lily occupies to the work camp where people are sent before deportation to concentration camps。 We are provided a glimpse into the horror of these camps, but we also see the heroics of many of their residents, who help others even in the face of death。While in her novels Jenoff presents us with the worst of humanity, in her main characters she shows us individuals whom we might want to emulate。 Her heroes are not idealistic models of perfection。 They are people like us who have frailties, but they transcend their faults to perform acts that are purely for the benefit of others。 There are twists that are quite unexpected, jarring almost, but clearly demonstrate that even the best of us can only do what we think is right。 We don't always know the outcome of our actions。 We are, after all, only human。 We make mistakes。 And so do the women here。As in each of Jenoff's novels, we are left feeling inspired in many ways。 Inspired to make sure that the atrocities that occurred during WWII never happen again, but also to make our lives count for something。 To try to behave in a manner that shows even a fraction of the selflessness and dedication that Jenoff's heroes demonstrate。 To be better people。 And that's what much good literature does。 It inspires。Reviewed by Pamela Kramer 。。。more
