If I rolled my eyes any harder at this ending, my eyeballs would fall out of my head。 At this point I have read too many manga with awful conclusions to even be surprised。Extended review to come。 Bear with me as I try to feel something for this car-wreck。。。

"Shinzou wo sasageyo"What a bittersweet ending to the series I've journeyed with for years。 😩 I may or may not have shed a few tears as I read the ending。 If I'll be honest, I wish the last chapter could've been longer to give more semblance to the series's closure。 But nonetheless, I loved the final volume as a whole。 It went towards directions I truly didn't expect and was heartbroken a lot of times。 It felt like I was saying goodbye to childhood friends, really。 😭One thing's for sure: I'll d "Shinzou wo sasageyo"What a bittersweet ending to the series I've journeyed with for years。 😩 I may or may not have shed a few tears as I read the ending。 If I'll be honest, I wish the last chapter could've been longer to give more semblance to the series's closure。 But nonetheless, I loved the final volume as a whole。 It went towards directions I truly didn't expect and was heartbroken a lot of times。 It felt like I was saying goodbye to childhood friends, really。 😭One thing's for sure: I'll definitely re-read and rewatch the whole series again and again。 。。。more

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 I'm not usually one to write reviews on any platform, let alone Goodreads, but the Attack on Titan series means so much to me that it was impossible not to write one。 I do agree with the people saying that there were quite a few plot holes in the final chapter and the whole Historia pregnancy plot didn't really hold any significance in the end but none of that matters to me。 I'm surprised that people are complaining because we got a happy ending and I couldn't ask for anything better。 Yes, the e I'm not usually one to write reviews on any platform, let alone Goodreads, but the Attack on Titan series means so much to me that it was impossible not to write one。 I do agree with the people saying that there were quite a few plot holes in the final chapter and the whole Historia pregnancy plot didn't really hold any significance in the end but none of that matters to me。 I'm surprised that people are complaining because we got a happy ending and I couldn't ask for anything better。 Yes, the ending was simplistic, but it was so bittersweet at the same time。 Those final panels with Mikasa at the tree were beautiful and I'm so sad that she never got to have her happy ending like the rest of the characters。 I also think it's quite ironic how Eren never got to achieve his freedom。 This series has been a ride and I'm so thankful for this animanga。 Even though I only started this amazing series a few months ago, I'm so glad to have been a part of this journey and sharing it with other fans。 This is easily my favourite anime/ manga of all time and it was most certainly worth all of the pain it put me through (chapter 138, I'm looking at you)。 I loved getting to see all of the plot twists as we progressed through the arcs。 Starting Attack on Titan has to be one of the best decisions of my life and it's definitely made an impact - it's what got me into watching anime and from that I got to make so many new friendships! I'm still unable to fathom that this masterpiece has finally come to an end。Thank you, Hajime Isayama。 。。。more

So all of it was for nothings and things are worse off? But the main characters besides Mikasa and Eren get a happy ending?

It's absurd to try to review a series that has been a huge part of my life since 2013 but I want to write a few things to remind myself of how I felt when I finished it。 No spoilers, but if you know me well enough that my depressive rambling about humanity is a spoiler I can't do anything about that LOL。I came to this series for some hype slicing and flying action, I stayed for the mysteries and conspiracies (all of which tied well sometimes with insane foreshadowing spanning 80+ chapters), BUT It's absurd to try to review a series that has been a huge part of my life since 2013 but I want to write a few things to remind myself of how I felt when I finished it。 No spoilers, but if you know me well enough that my depressive rambling about humanity is a spoiler I can't do anything about that LOL。I came to this series for some hype slicing and flying action, I stayed for the mysteries and conspiracies (all of which tied well sometimes with insane foreshadowing spanning 80+ chapters), BUT what I'm taking away from it all is reflecting on the human character。 I struggled against all of the author's wishes to find a character to root for, a side to take, a team to ride-or-die for, and I kept coming up empty。 War isn't good trumping over evil ---War is a horrible thing we do to each other for selfish reasons。 There's no point in trying to pinpoint a hero, and the real way to enjoy a story is to just understand the characters' motivations for what they are。 It strikes me now that I've never really read/watched a heroic action story before where the base assumption was that humans suck and can do awful things even if they have redeeming qualities。 Genocide, torture, murder aren't done by monsters --they're done by humans who believe it's the right thing to do, and that's what's actually scary about it。 This probably goes to the author not being American LOL I've never read a fantasy story of conflict that was so genuine as to how humans act when they're scared。 (It's a theme that was apparent since Chapter 1 now that I think about it, with military leaders encouraging conscripts to sacrifice themselves in suicide-adjacent missions。) I didn't have to sympathise with Eren to understand him ---or even Reiner or Gabi or Zeke, the three characters I loved to hate。 But they still were just all so human。 And I learned a lot by reflecting on my personal reactions to them (I'll always hate Reiner for making me confront my hypocrisy in whom I let get away with what LOL)。 But the point is that Attack on Titan has a world of really deep, different, traumatised characters each with their own motivations that make sense and that compliment each other in some magical ways。 Eren especially had the best anti-hero arc I've ever read。 Period。 That was a thrill to read。 I also want to take a second to give another shoutout to the mysteries/foreshadowing in this show。 Like holy shit。 The way you're so confused when you first see things and you try to guess what it could all mean but you can't, and then once you learn everything and go back it all seems SOOOOOO obvious and the hints were all hiding in plain sight。。。 THAT is a magical storytelling experience。 tl;dr It's hard to imagine anything topping this series for me in terms of the depth of depression I felt and the mental exhaustion I went through reflecting/theorising about it ---all the while being the series that's also got me feeling the most hype with its action sequences。 It's also always going to be dear to me for how much I've bonded with my friends/arkuzkardesler over it <3 Some quotes that have stayed with me over the years (i。e。 that haunted me and kept me awake at night):- "If I knew this was the price to pay for freedom, I never would have paid it。" (a banger) - "Someone who can't sacrifice anything can't ever change anything。 To defeat a monster, you must abandon your humanity。" - "Everyone is a slave to something。" - "Saving the world。 Are there any words sweeter and more alluring? You give yourselves to the sublime excitement that is the idea of saving the world。 You gulp it down as if to wash away all your hatred until now, as if it never existed。" 。。。more

By the way, this is a monster of a review that touches the analysis zone (yeah, I mean that this is long。)After a long journey (that I haven't followed since the beginning, sadly), this story came to an end。 And what a ride it was!But Disclaimer: Here I share my love for this piece of storytelling, but there’s not only love。Attack on Titan is many things: an exciting tale full of mysteries, plot twists, endearing characters, action, gore, complexity, and more。 What it’s not, is perfect。 But that’s okay。 It wasn’t meant to be。 But more on that later。Like the characters it portrays with brilliance, Shingeki no kyojin evolved with time。 Started with a kind of simplistic drawing, but came to an end with a far more elaborated one, showing the progression of time and the learning of Isayama。When I first heard of this manga (also the anime), was hesitant to start it。 A tale of giant monsters named Titans who ate people? Okeeeeeyy。 I’m forever glad I did, howbeit。Throughout many arcs, chapter after chapter this story heightened the stakes more and more ‘till the end, where。。。 well, where stakes couldn’t have been higher。The conflict started very simple in appearance: monsters vs。 humans, bad against goodies。 Very clear。 But then it got real, it got gray, it got almost morally impossible to judge: the heroes are not really heroes, the villains aren't bad people。 Where is the line between one and the other? Or they are just the same, reflecting, trying to survive in a world where hate prevailed above anything else? Like that, it got to be a quite realistic view of real life, a place where much stuff remains unclear, where shapes of gray are far more common than plain black and white。 Tension builds like a crescendo, with action and heart-stoppers never letting you breathe。 It’s hard to pinpoint any filler。 Everything there serves a purpose, either for knowing our characters or to move the plot。Here I want to talk about something。 I love its characters。 They are created to show the themes of the story, plus do it very well。 They’re human, some in more likable ways than others, but they don’t do anything just to go with the flow。Eren was a weird choice for a main, I thought at the beginning。 He was not special (besides the obvious), threw tantrums, moreover was very short-tempered。 His motivation was revenge, but at least he had a strong will。But it was that imperfection that enriched the story。 Eren was not a hero。 He was never presented as one。 He tried, yes。 He acted suicidal more than once for his version of what was right (defending Armin when couldn’t win, trying to save his mother, throwing himself with the Survey Corps), and most of the time, failed。 That failure filled him with more hate, but also with clarity of this unpowerness。I found Mikasa too static for moments。 Her mind was too locked with Eren’s well-being to do anything else (apart from being a badass, beautiful fighter)。 But we do see her grow。 In the end, her heroism remains intact, and her strength shows not to be only physical。Completing the main trio, we got Armin, who I believe is the true soul of everything。 He’s the one who shows a walk to Eren, a path of freedom, which he follows to the heart。 Their departing views on what freedom means is the point where we can observe the difference between the two, and start to glimpse at the tragedy that was always going to unfold。The arcs of each one intertwine with the other, with every mystery solved, or truth revealed they reacted, but also change to keep up。 Overall, these three share a bond like no other, which is the source of the major conflict itself。 The reason for the fallout。 Eren’s one of the best anti-villain arcs I’ve read。 I regard that he was going there since the very first moment。 His views on right-wrong were static at some point。 His motivations were not always clear, but his purpose was: freedom for his loved ones。 It was always there, the things he was willing to do for that were monstrous but made sense for himself。Other characters come and go, some showing the author’s liking of groups of three。 Nevertheless, the 104th squad stands out for being our group of background cast。 Jean, Connie, Sasha, Reigner, Annie, Bertholdt, even Marco are a breath of fresh air bringing cheerfulness and drama。Even more endearing (to me) are the veterans of the Survey Corps。 Erwin Smith is a leader of excellence, a smart one, and an imperfect individual with eyes focused on a goal, on a dream。 Even with him gone from the narrative his shadow never faints。Surely the most popular character on the whole series, Levi Ackerman is a force to be reckoned with。 Yes, he’s Humanity’s strongest。 His character is one of the most important, not just for his strength or physical capacity but because he’s also the only one that suffers through hell remaining in one piece (in a metaphorical way)。 In the mind and the feels, he’s not a machine as some claim, but a human being that tries to save humanity, do his part without hesitation。 The epitome of the “devote your heart”, as he does give it all, loses everything and still is a good person (a grumpy, clean freak, also a bad-mannered one, fine)。 It’s a character that never does something born of selfishness。 I find him very noble as the true hero of all。And my absolute favorite from all of this, Hange Zoë。 They’re a titan freak that truly embodies what the Survey corps is about: looking for awareness, always trying to find the true meaning, but also never stopping being yourself, not leaving your morals behind nor flicking from the bigger picture。 A free spirit not hold to any convention。 A person of big intelligence that always tries to be kind to others (don’t get them mad tho), that’s passionate, enthusiastic about everything, and a leader that never gives up (yeah, my love is clear。 Moving on。)This is a tragic tale that starts with the locals going to the universal。 From a small picture, the understanding of the world they live in, the government, politics, the truths hiding in front of them, the censorship, to the world view of what made them what they’re, of how the island is behind, and that their existence is a point in a sea of points。 It’s a story full of pain, of despair, gets to your heart, and makes you suffer。 Mirrors a world where nothing comes easy。 You begin to wonder, just as the characters:Why?Why is there so much suffering? Why is this happening, isn’t that unfair? How to make it stop? The thing is, how to make it stop? Everything bad started for the wishes of supremacy, ambition from the powerful。 The pain we see is because of hate, prejudice, of racism。 It still prevails in this world。 It still hurts all of us in a way or another。 As the story points out, with so many people in the world, it’s not an easy task to just eradicate something from everyone’s heads。The big theme of this story is hate, which is the source of all wrongness。 Eren started the end of the world, became a monster for his own will, but why did he? His “enemies” brought the pain to his door, didn’t they raised him that way with their wrongdoings? The hate only started more hatred。 The cycle of hate was the real enemy all along, as intangible as it is。Freedom, how it’s a right from the day everyone is born, no matter who you’re, also remains all the way。 The wanting of it moves all along。 The survey of knowledge, of the truth, to communicate that truth to reach understanding, as represented with the Corps, is important and liberating。It scaled until all came to a moral conflict that could be examined in many different ways。 There was no good choice for the characters that ended in everyone happy。 Many gave options that could have, but with high possibilities of failing, or just impractical to the core。I like that, even when disagreeing with him heartedly, I could understand Eren’s point of view (also: genocide is wrong, please let’s not claim it’s right just for understanding where his actions come from)。 In a way, he does nothing, the island he grew up on gets exterminated, his friends die。 On the other, he can save his loved ones and his island, but everyone else, who brought him the greatest pain, dies。 Yes, I can see his was a hard choice, but also a selfish one。 His doings were probably always going to end as it did, maybe purposeful: enemies getting together to end a bigger enemy。 It kind of worked。But that narrowed view and choice is a tragic one, but one that makes total sense for his characterization。 To the bad, now。Introducing a big power always has its limits, its rules。 If you don’t put them on the table early one it's going to luck like a cheat。 Eren’s true nature revelation does not come from nowhere, but still feels like, now, everything that happened before could have been manipulated in a way or another? Gives a much more suffocating feeling and the freedom looked for ends up being nothing。 Everything was enslaved to a loop then?Ymir's ending 。。。 off-screen and less important。By the final, I didn’t like how many of the character arcs were pushed。 At the endpoint, it all felt rushed。 I believe that a couple of more chapters wouldn’t have made any harm, but would have helped everything develop with fluency。Historia´s arc especially makes no sense to me。 Got reduced to a mother (okay), but also developed a too radical ideology。 Living for herself was all she was about, but letting the world die? Neither understand the clear teasing of her pregnancy。 Don’t even let me start with Sasha and her disposal for the benefit of other (necessary) character’s evolution。My biggest complaint, which is in no way objective and is, against all odds, a very personal, visceral take made from the bottom of my heart: Hange Zoë’s character。 To this day and to the day I die I’ll believe they deserved better treatment, a better final arc。 What was even their arc at the end? It was all so tragical, the only main character’s mortal causality from the rumbling。 After everything they went through, they could have been alive as well as happy now。What bothers me is the convenience of the circumstances: a character whose presence alive is a hole itself, appears to cause problems while Hange can’t but die to let the others go to save the world。 Dies and that ends not being necessary, for another character suddenly can fly (a raised eyebrow to that)。 I’m mad because what was the point? It’s a pointless death。 Always feeling not enough to the Commander position, is treated for the narrative as incompetent (they are not, they managed to transition a medieval society to the modern world in four years and did it well), when the situation was too big for anyone。 To the end, the character finds a way to “redeem themselves” of the failure employing death, sacrifice。 No, it was not their fault and should have been made clear to them。 Dying to save the others was in no way, what they had to do to finally have done a good job。At least Hange died as the hero they were。 As Eren with the bird, we’re reminded of they as the plane flying high and now, free。 End of rant。 “Why don’t we talk this through?” is not a literal quote, even so, it's the real message for me。 Problems are never-ending until we, for real, start hearing the other。 When every single person chooses to do the most loving option, when love gets elected instead of hate, when we stop fighting。 With getting to do that, to know one another, to understand our circumstances, communicating, respecting other views, we can learn to see ourselves in the next person, and so in that way, they’re not foreign anymore, but human too, like me and you and all of us。That’s why Armin was, in words of the story, the one who was gonna save them all。 The boy who always tried to talk things up before throwing punches will link the enemies to actually, start talking and cooperating。 For me, that’s a very hopeful ending, no matter what。(Hange, humanity's brightest and voice of reason。)No, I don’t think it romanticizes or says that genocide is right。 It is ALWAYS wrong。 Eren had to be stopped, and the narrative never intends to say otherwise。 Our most beloved characters are the actual forces fighting that, through the final panels we get to see the reasoning behind it。 Though they feel moved for him to have made such a move, becoming a monster for them, they in no way say that was right。 Was a mistake, a flawed decision, and just wrong。 He, and all of them, paid for it。So, for me, the ending is fitting。 Yes, it leaves some holes。 Yes, it’s bittersweet (but hey, this was a bittersweet story since minute one- or panel one) and heartbreaking。 I consider it realistic。 The death of millions didn’t solve anything, was never going to。 Was incorrect, bad。 Such hate from years wasn’t going to be forgotten just like that, takes time。 In the end, ahead remained a damaged world, a weakened one。 But a spark was shining, and I headcanon that they got to finally reach it。 。。。more
