Summary

A warm and witty love story about making the most of life’s not-so-little curveballs by the #1 Amazon Charts bestselling author of Life and Other Near-Death Experiences

Aly Jackson has waited her whole life to become editor in chief of All Good magazine。 But six months into the job, she overhears her coworkers belittling her。 Aly’s clapback? A very public, career-jeopardizing meltdown。 To undo the mess, she agrees to a monthlong unpaid leave。

Reluctant but determined to turn misfortune into opportunity, Aly retreats to the Lake Michigan beach house her brother, Luke, left to her when he died nearly a year earlier。 Except when Aly arrives, she discovers Luke’s slacker best friend, Wyatt, inherited the place, too。

Wyatt is unkempt, unmotivated, and totally uninterested in Aly’s desire to sell。 Yet as battle lines are drawn, Aly wonders whether she and this wild card have more than Luke in common。 But is she willing to swap her lifelong dreams for a shot at healing her broken heart?

Really enjoyed this book。 Finding yourself through loss。 What matters most after loss。

good for us allThis book is not mushy and has depth。 It’ shows people how to overcome things by working them out and talking about them。 A hard but good read

I'm a fan of Camille Pagán's books and this one was no exception。 As a Michigander, I loved all of the Michigan references, too - The author actually lives in Ann Arbor so I assume she's familiar with the west side of the state, where this took place。 I'm a fan of Camille Pagán's books and this one was no exception。 As a Michigander, I loved all of the Michigan references, too - The author actually lives in Ann Arbor so I assume she's familiar with the west side of the state, where this took place。 。。。more

A wonderful surprise! When I started this book, I had some difficulty with the main character。 I didn't really like the story。 I kept reading, mainly because I didn't have any other book downloaded, and I'm so glad I did。 This is a wonderful story。 A wonderful surprise! When I started this book, I had some difficulty with the main character。 I didn't really like the story。 I kept reading, mainly because I didn't have any other book downloaded, and I'm so glad I did。 This is a wonderful story。 。。。more

Really enjoyed this。 I liked seeing Aly get braver over the course of the story, allow herself to be taken care of, and start to be honest with herself about what she wanted and why。

Not a great novel by any means but I did enjoy it。 I would call it a light beach read。 I picked it up because it promised humor and I needed some。 However, the humor was lighter than I was hoping but it had enough weight to the story to keep me interested。 It reminded me of a good Rom-com that had lead characters I liked。

Oh my goodness。 This book。 I went into it cold, having a vague idea what it was about but goodness it snagged me and I finished it within hours。 This book nearly brought me to tears multiple times。 It was simple, real, and got straight to the point of all the things that can make us feel broken。 It was so beautiful。 Simple and beautiful。 No flowery, over drawn out parts you want to skim。 The characters were the perfect depth and realness。 There’s no over edited(both in looks and personalities) i Oh my goodness。 This book。 I went into it cold, having a vague idea what it was about but goodness it snagged me and I finished it within hours。 This book nearly brought me to tears multiple times。 It was simple, real, and got straight to the point of all the things that can make us feel broken。 It was so beautiful。 Simple and beautiful。 No flowery, over drawn out parts you want to skim。 The characters were the perfect depth and realness。 There’s no over edited(both in looks and personalities) in it。 This is just a wonderful quick read。 I just really really loved it。 。。。more

For about 90% of the book, the main character, Aly, was SO unlikable。 It was really predictable but it was a pretty easy read with a nice payoff。

Carla

While some of the characters in this book, experienced child abuse, alcoholism, death of a sibling, I feel it was tastefully done。 Realistic tough things people go through and how they handle them differently。

This review has been hidden because it contains spoilers。 To view it, click here。 Meh。 Build up to the romance was mediocre。 It felt like an eighth grader wrote the first half。 Then the author tried adding in some healthy parts of relationships towards the end but it didn’t work out。 The main character needs therapy。

This book is amazing! When it comes out I recommend everyone to read it。 The way it talks about grief, trauma, love, ambition, and many other topics is impressive。 The book made me feel for the characters when they were sad, depressed, and happy。 This is an amazing romantic story about discovery of self most importantly。

Main character was tiresomeThis book reminded me of the stories I enjoyed when I was in my 20s。 Now that I am well past that age, I found it to be tiresome and predictable。 Aly, the main character, was a bore。 Sure, I got that she had a horrible childhood, but the “nobody could ever love poor pitiful me” attitude got old quickly。 The story was OK, but very simplistic。 I will be moving on to other authors。

A cute taleA great escape read about a would be lung editor, who just list er brother trying to rediscover her best self。 Fraught with twists and turns and a touch of unbelievable text, this book leaves you entranced until the final pages。

I really enjoyed this book。 I thought the story was sweet, and I saw parts of myself in the main character。 I thought it was a tad campy and predictable, but I didn’t mind it with this book。 Of note, don’t recommend if you’re grieving and looking to get away from those thoughts。

I absolutely loved this one, which I knew I would, because I love ALL of Camille's books。 This book was so special, and such a delight to read。 Synopsis:Aly has her dream job at All Good magazine。 And in an attempt to defend herself from gossiping coworkers, Aly is placed on unpaid leave when her defending message is made public。 Aly decides to use this break as an opportunity to revisit her late brother, Luke's home in Michigan, where she learns that her brother's best friend, Wyatt has been li I absolutely loved this one, which I knew I would, because I love ALL of Camille's books。 This book was so special, and such a delight to read。 Synopsis:Aly has her dream job at All Good magazine。 And in an attempt to defend herself from gossiping coworkers, Aly is placed on unpaid leave when her defending message is made public。 Aly decides to use this break as an opportunity to revisit her late brother, Luke's home in Michigan, where she learns that her brother's best friend, Wyatt has been living in Luke's absence。What unravels is a touching story of friendship, love, and navigating new territory, all while processing the grief of losing her brother and being reminded of past traumas from their childhood。There's an earth-shattering part of this book that I read while sitting at our local café, snow falling sideways outside, Coldplay's "Paradise" playing overhead, and it literally ripped my heart in two。 So maybe when you are approaching Chapter 34, snuggle up somewhere warm and quiet and not in public, and allow yourself a good cry。 Because you'll need it with this one。Good for You releases to the masses March 1 and is a work of contemporary romantic fiction you won't want to miss!Thank you again, Camille for sharing another beautiful piece of your heart and soul with me。 🩷⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ 。。。more

Aly Jackson is laser focused on making a success of her dream job as editor-in-chief of her favorite magazine, and intent on leaving her family life in Michigan behind her。 Following the unexpected death of her brother Luke, Aly is also avoiding her grief, and anything to do with the home he left to her。 When work pressures boil over and Aly loses her cool in a public confrontation with her coworkers, she accepts an unpaid leave of absence in hopes of smooth things over。 All at once Aly's life a Aly Jackson is laser focused on making a success of her dream job as editor-in-chief of her favorite magazine, and intent on leaving her family life in Michigan behind her。 Following the unexpected death of her brother Luke, Aly is also avoiding her grief, and anything to do with the home he left to her。 When work pressures boil over and Aly loses her cool in a public confrontation with her coworkers, she accepts an unpaid leave of absence in hopes of smooth things over。 All at once Aly's life and identity begins to unravel。 Short on funds and with nowhere else to go, Aly submits to making quick work of settling the estate business -- and then to she will get her job back。 When she arrives, her brother's best friend and unexpected co-owner of the house upsets all of her plans。 At the lake house, Aly must come to terms with everything she has been avoiding - her childhood, her brother's death, her trauma, what exactly was at stake in her public sound off - and reconsider how she wants to live her life。 (Note: to me, the cover art doesn't really reflect the plot。 Despite the lake house setting, the characters never spend a day lounging on the beach, and while its kept relatively light and off-the page/in the past tense, most of the book is spent on reconciling trauma and grief)。As for complaints about the plot's predictability, I don't think many people read a romance without anticipating how the story is going to end。 I did, however, have a hard time with Aly's seeming (view spoiler)[ decision to no longer pursue a career as an editor。 She spends most of the book devoted to editing as her life's purpose。 Why should having a life with Wyatt and keeping the beach house mean an entire career switch? (Note: I'm not suggesting she take any of the jobs on offer to her。 Rather, objected to Aly's giving up on being an editor altogether)。 (hide spoiler)] It felt to me that Aly was giving up an important piece of herself, and unnecessarily so。 While this was somewhat consistent with her character's tendency to make reactionary decisions that really aren't in her best interest or aimed at what she wants, yet contrary to the supposedly grounded and direction focused aspect of her character, and it wasn't satisfying。 I'm going to imagine a postscript in which Wyatt reasons with her, and helps her to find a way to take her passion in an unanticipated direction。Because of Aly's wavering and her dramatic changes in attitude, the romance could have been more developed。 (view spoiler)[ There was a cringy moment when Aly accepts her current relationship isn't working because they are too content with where they are and not planning for the future, as if everyone has to be on the fast train to marriage and babies for their relationship to be good。 As if being content and enjoying where you are is a bad thing。 This is not to say that the relationship was good, but it seemed like a poor way to express her dissatisfaction。 Then in her relationship with Wyatt, (hide spoiler)] the 'spark' between the characters was there and initially resisted, but there isn't enough actual relationship growth and development shown, beyond sexual chemistry and a grief bond。 There are also some other conveniences built into the plot -- (view spoiler)[ like the fact that Aly inherits both a fortune and a beach house at the exact moment that she's broke and jobless; the bills have been handled in the meantime; and she has a love interest just waiting for her there too (hide spoiler)] that magically make Aly's whole life transformation possible。Despite these criticisms, Pagan balances the difficult subjects and the lighter romance well。 Her characters are relatable, and furthermore, accept responsibility for their actions (reactions), and move forward with compassion and maturity that I could appreciate。 I actually wished the plot had gone farther, so we could see the relationship ripen, the characters further developed, and the new course set。 Content note: domestic violence, child abuse, alcoholism, sibling death, PTSD and traumatic memory loss。 。。。more

One of the better picks from Amazon First Reads in the last several months and from a new-to-me author, Camille Pagan。 I enjoyed the premise of this emotional story and its characters。 Wyatt and Aly are both interesting individuals carrying a boatload of personal baggage。 I definitely wanted to reach out and hug them both。 She’s all work and no play and he’s looking for less stress and more living life to its fullest。 Aly has issues that she keeps hidden and Wyatt has his own secrets that he hol One of the better picks from Amazon First Reads in the last several months and from a new-to-me author, Camille Pagan。 I enjoyed the premise of this emotional story and its characters。 Wyatt and Aly are both interesting individuals carrying a boatload of personal baggage。 I definitely wanted to reach out and hug them both。 She’s all work and no play and he’s looking for less stress and more living life to its fullest。 Aly has issues that she keeps hidden and Wyatt has his own secrets that he holds close。 Together they’re a bit of a mess – a relationship that starts off in quicksand -- until finally they find solid ground in a friends-to-lovers romance。 And thank goodness for Luke -- a brother and best friend who was a wise and loving forward-thinking guardian angel。The aftereffects of child abuse and the loss of a loved one might be triggers for some – so be forewarned。 Kudos to the author in dealing with these sensitive subject matters with grace and respect。 Disappointed raused its ugly head with a whiplash ending that felt fast-tracked and left too many dangling ends。 And there was no epilogue and could have benefited greatly from the inclusion of one。 Still, a decent afternoon of reading。 。。。more

heartwarming story that was a bit rushed in partsThis was a great story that could’ve done with about 100 more pages of character/relationship development between the Aly and Wyatt。 There were a couple key areas where I felt like the situation was abruptly advanced。 Overall, an enjoyable read。

I didn't have any expectation going into this book as this was my first time reading this author。 The premise an ambitious woman dealing with grief and childhood trauma was intriguing。 The book was a quick read and I got into the book towards the middle。 Overall, the story was predictable although enjoyable。 Just not my cup of tea。 I didn't have any expectation going into this book as this was my first time reading this author。 The premise an ambitious woman dealing with grief and childhood trauma was intriguing。 The book was a quick read and I got into the book towards the middle。 Overall, the story was predictable although enjoyable。 Just not my cup of tea。 。。。more

3。5。 Cute, kind of a Hallmark Movie vibe。 Protagonist moves from big city to small town- then there’s the guy she never could stand。 Oh wait - she’s beginning to feel super attracted to him… I enjoyed it, but it was very predictable。

Too predictable, characters not likableFrom the very beginning, I did not like any of the characters。 They seemed too shallow and one dimensional to me, and they never did grow on me。 I didn't like them any more by the end of the book。 The storyline was just ok。 I give the book a 3 1/2 and would not pick it up again。 Too predictable, characters not likableFrom the very beginning, I did not like any of the characters。 They seemed too shallow and one dimensional to me, and they never did grow on me。 I didn't like them any more by the end of the book。 The storyline was just ok。 I give the book a 3 1/2 and would not pick it up again。 。。。more

4。5 stars。 I loved this。 I typically prefer literary fiction, but a romance is a nice break if it’s done well。 And this is done well。 I like that the author shows how childhood trauma can affect you years later but that a terrible childhood can be overcome and redeemed。 This wasn’t quite the typical romance because it does deal with this issue。 And that makes it better in my book。 The resolution might have been a little pat and simplistic, but it’s a good message that it’s never too late to heal 4。5 stars。 I loved this。 I typically prefer literary fiction, but a romance is a nice break if it’s done well。 And this is done well。 I like that the author shows how childhood trauma can affect you years later but that a terrible childhood can be overcome and redeemed。 This wasn’t quite the typical romance because it does deal with this issue。 And that makes it better in my book。 The resolution might have been a little pat and simplistic, but it’s a good message that it’s never too late to heal - or to find love。 。。。more
