Summary

The most enduring detectives in American crime fiction are back in this electrifying thrillerof art and brutalityfrom the #1 New York Times bestselling master of suspense。

Los Angeles is a city of stark contrast, the palaces of the affluent coexisting uneasily with the hellholes of the mad and the needy。 It is that shadow world and the violence it breeds that draw brilliant psychologist Dr。 Alex Delaware and Detective Milo Sturgis into an unsettling case of altruism gone wrong。

On a superficially lovely morning a woman shows up for work with her usual enthusiasm。 She’s the newly hired personal assistant to a handsome, wealthy photographer and is ready to greet her boss with coffee and good cheer。 Instead, she finds him slumped in bed, shot to death。

The victim had recently received rave media attention for his latest project: images of homeless people in their personal “dream” situations, elaborately costumed and enacting unfulfilled fantasies。 There are some, however, who view the whole thing as nothing more than crass exploitation, citing token payments and the victim’s avoidance of any long-term relationships with his subjects。

Has disgruntlement blossomed into homicidal rage? Or do the roots of violence reach down to the victim’s family—a clan, sired by an elusive billionaire, that is bizarre in its own right?

Then new murders arise, and Alex and Milo begin peeling back layer after layer of intrigue and complexity, culminating in one of the deadliest threats they’ve ever faced。

Book 38 in the series and still Kellerman doesn't make the dialog or the exchanges between Milo and Alex look stale or dated。 Book 38 in the series and still Kellerman doesn't make the dialog or the exchanges between Milo and Alex look stale or dated。 。。。more

I have read a fair number of Kellerman’s books。 This may be the last one I read。

3。5 / 5An entertaining who-done-it with characters I have got to know and love over the years – Alex and Milo and their sometimes amusing banter。A wealthy photographer has been murdered in his studio – his project was finding homeless people and having them dress up in costumes relating to the personas they wished to be, taking before and after photos, giving them a bit of cash and sending them on their way。 From the get-go you can tell this is not the best idea。I found an underlying theme in th 3。5 / 5An entertaining who-done-it with characters I have got to know and love over the years – Alex and Milo and their sometimes amusing banter。A wealthy photographer has been murdered in his studio – his project was finding homeless people and having them dress up in costumes relating to the personas they wished to be, taking before and after photos, giving them a bit of cash and sending them on their way。 From the get-go you can tell this is not the best idea。I found an underlying theme in this book where I suspect Kellerman was attempting to address the problem of homelessness。 On Page 166 Alex explores outpatient treatment of mentally ill people and opines how ineffective it is and why。 He says: “Once things get political they turn toxic。”When the villain is revealed I was disappointed and felt it was remote and unrealistic, but I enjoy these books as respite from anything too deep and/or serious…it’s just good entertainment。 。。。more

DisapointingThe background dealing with homeless people seemed misguided and plot not as believable as other books in the series。 No mention of Miles's personal life DisapointingThe background dealing with homeless people seemed misguided and plot not as believable as other books in the series。 No mention of Miles's personal life 。。。more

I've read this entire series yet feel ambivalent about it。 As usual, this book has an abundance of characters and a mediocre plot。 It was easier to follow than others in this series。 I admire Kellerman for producing such a detailed work, but the relationship between Alex and Robin is uneventful。 Similarly, Milo reverts to form (with less eating) with no revelations。 I've read this entire series yet feel ambivalent about it。 As usual, this book has an abundance of characters and a mediocre plot。 It was easier to follow than others in this series。 I admire Kellerman for producing such a detailed work, but the relationship between Alex and Robin is uneventful。 Similarly, Milo reverts to form (with less eating) with no revelations。 。。。more

I really can't give a Jonathan Kellerman novel any less than a 4 when I grab them hot off the press each time。 As with Stephanie Plum, his protagonist psychologist Alex Delaware and LAPD Detectve Milo Sturgis have been down the same road many, many times, solving crimes together, yet each time is a new story。 This one revolves around the murder of a young man and a group of homeless people, a very current and challenging problem in LA。Much of the book is talk: both lead characters talking throug I really can't give a Jonathan Kellerman novel any less than a 4 when I grab them hot off the press each time。 As with Stephanie Plum, his protagonist psychologist Alex Delaware and LAPD Detectve Milo Sturgis have been down the same road many, many times, solving crimes together, yet each time is a new story。 This one revolves around the murder of a young man and a group of homeless people, a very current and challenging problem in LA。Much of the book is talk: both lead characters talking through the aspects of the crimes(s), Alex from a psychological point of view, Milo from that of a seasoned detective。 But just as one wearies of the talk, the action begins and leaves you breathless。If you haven't tried Jonathan Kellerman, do so。 。。。more

Many years ago, I used to be thoroughly enamoured of this series—in fact, I owned all the books—so I don't know if it's just me and my reading tastes that have changed。 This was a decent set-up, but I just couldn't get into the book, and it got more and more tedious。 I found the writing pedestrian, and the style started to grate on me after a while。 So much so, that I got up to about 80% before giving up。 Didn't even care about who did it。(Review copy from NetGalley) Many years ago, I used to be thoroughly enamoured of this series—in fact, I owned all the books—so I don't know if it's just me and my reading tastes that have changed。 This was a decent set-up, but I just couldn't get into the book, and it got more and more tedious。 I found the writing pedestrian, and the style started to grate on me after a while。 So much so, that I got up to about 80% before giving up。 Didn't even care about who did it。(Review copy from NetGalley) 。。。more

I normally enjoy Kellerman’s books but this one was a bit of a miss。 It started very slowly and never really hit it’s stride。 The plot wasn’t at all interesting, the characters never developed and the motivation of the eventually revealed killer really quite odd。 Alex and Robin’s relationship is now reduced to cookie cutter words and actions in every scene and similarly with Alex and Milo。 The fascination with Milo’s overeating juxtaposed with Alex’s competitive undereating is just ludicrous at I normally enjoy Kellerman’s books but this one was a bit of a miss。 It started very slowly and never really hit it’s stride。 The plot wasn’t at all interesting, the characters never developed and the motivation of the eventually revealed killer really quite odd。 Alex and Robin’s relationship is now reduced to cookie cutter words and actions in every scene and similarly with Alex and Milo。 The fascination with Milo’s overeating juxtaposed with Alex’s competitive undereating is just ludicrous at this point。 This is book number 38 and I think the series has run it’s course。 。。。more

Another good Alex & MiloI have read every Alex & Milo book。 JK is one of my favorite authors。 This book didn’t fail to impress me。 I never had a clue where it was headed。 Alex has a mind that works in ways I could never figure out。 I felt for Donny, I wished that he could have lived longer。 He’s described as a kind and sweet person。 The end threw me for loop。

Like others in the series this proved to be a solid police procedural。 Kellerman is skilled in crafting a gripping crime thriller with Alex Delaware bringing a great deal of insight and compassion to his interactions with witnesses and suspects。 。。。more

An Ok Delaware novel。 He and Milo are investigating the death of a photographer who turns out to be the son of a reclusive billionaire。 His latest project involved the photography of homeless people。 Coul that have led to his death? Ok but not great seemed a little rushed。

Paula Weisberger

Listened on Audible 2。5 stars rounded upSpending time with Alex Delaware, Milo and John Rubinstein ( reader) is like hanging out with cousins as in always a nice reading break。This story had some quirky characters, but it didn’t completely keep me interested。 I could kind of tell you what it is about。 …

Tear jerkerStory of a bad family background。 A lot of sick people living in Los Angeles。 Kept me up st night reading。

I love these characters but there is one thing I really dislike from Kellerman。 His constant use of Pitbull as a negative word。

Mike Triplett

Worst yetI have read all of the Alex Delaware books and this is the worst one yet。 It is slow and and plodding with very little if any plot。 Page after page of the plight of the homeless。 I get it。 Homelessness bad。 Write an op-ed。

Typical Kellerman。 I don't mean that in a bad way at all, however。 He never disappoints。 I've read every single one of his Alex Delaware books, and every time, I feel like a fly on the wall, being a part of the story。 Typical Kellerman。 I don't mean that in a bad way at all, however。 He never disappoints。 I've read every single one of his Alex Delaware books, and every time, I feel like a fly on the wall, being a part of the story。 。。。more

Number 38 in the series and as good as ever, the plot twists and turns between homeless and privileged people and therein lies the storyline(no spoilers)。 We have alex, milo , and the three other detectives, milos mob to me。 Also included are murders, , social injustice, absent fathers, various relatives and real mixture of emotions。 So just go out and BUY this book you will not be dissappointed。

A call back to the good Kellerman books。The quality of the AD books have fluctuated wildly for some years now but this book is a good one。

Read it!Another great installment of the Alex Delaware and Lt。 Sturgis relationship。 The case is secondary。 Look forward to the next one。
