Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh。 Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee。

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything。 But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves his life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free。 Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling。

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems。 With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha 。 。 。 and the secrets of her heart。

I was a little hesitant starting this series but i’m actually glad I did。 I can see why people don’t like it but i liked how fast paced it was。 I couldn’t put this book down actually。 It was a lot of plot building but it’s the first book of an entire universe, what do you expect lol? but i definitely think that if you like fantasy, you will like this and this could be a good book to start if you want to get into fantasy。

The magic system is so interesting!

FantasyDarkness has emerged and it cannot be erased。 A light/sun summoner has been discovered that may be the future。ReviewThe most important question, is this worth reading?Yeah, if you want a magical world that wraps up decently enough for a 1st novel in a series, give this a read。 This novel definitely has that 2010 YA angst protagonist feeling。 Thankfully the protagonist eventually grows up and stops making dumb decisions。3。5/5

I did not expect myself to love this book。 Like I’ve read it bc of the Netflix show and I wish I read it way before。 The beginning was ok then it got a bit boring but then it escalated quickly, as I began to like the characters。 Darkling is not what I expected at all。 I have seen many people loving him so I assume he would be a likable person but no。 He literally annoyed me。 Even when they kissed I wasn’t that much happy about it。 Alina was a decent character, I love how she def Ahh what a book? This book was okay。 I felt like it was a bit slow, and not the most creative structure。 The world building was really great though! And that’s really what I liked about the book, just the unique world the story took place in。 However, the story itself felt really repetitive, like I’ve already read something where a girl finds outs she has powers and then falls in love with the bad guy who seems to be a good person。 Overall, I give it three stars because while the story was enjoyable and the imag This book was okay。 I felt like it was a bit slow, and not the most creative structure。 The world building was really great though! This was。。。 ehAnything for Six of Crows though, so we'll brave through it。 It's not TERRIBLE, per say。 Its just not great。 The plot is slow, 95% of the characters are boring as hell (not the darkling or my girl Genya though。 I love you baby)。 Alina is your typical "I just CANNOT be the chosen one, I'm just too weak and too normal。" please give me a break。 Hopefully she improves and comes into her powers later。All in all, you could be fine with a spark notes of this, if your aim is the upcoming s This was。。。 ehAnything for Six of Crows though, so we'll brave through it。 It's not TERRIBLE, per say。 Its just not great。 The plot is slow, 95% of the characters are boring as hell (not the darkling or my girl Genya though。 I love you baby)。 Alina is your typical "I just CANNOT be the chosen one, I'm just too weak and too normal。" please give me a break。 Hopefully she improves and comes into her powers later。All in all, you could be fine with a spark notes of this, if your aim is the upcoming show or Six of Crows。 。。。more

“I've been waiting for you a long time, Alina" He said。 "You and I are going to change the world。”Oh my gosh I apologize for not reading this sooner。I don't think words can properly describe how much I adored SHADOW & BONE。 This is definitely a YOUNG ADULT novel I would like to stress that due to some reviews saying the plot wasn’t complex enough and too straightforward。 This is probably not the best pick for Adult readers。 But I loved it。 Bardugo's writing style is easy and engaging。 I was so d “I've been waiting for you a long time, Alina" He said。 "You and I are going to change the world。”Oh my gosh I apologize for not reading this sooner。I don't think words can properly describe how much I adored SHADOW & BONE。 This is definitely a YOUNG ADULT novel I would like to stress that due to some reviews saying the plot wasn’t complex enough and too straightforward。 This is probably not the best pick for Adult readers。 But I loved it。 Bardugo's writing style is easy and engaging。 I was so drawn in that 358 pages seemed to go by in the blink of an eye。 I wish I could unread it just so I can go back and re-read it again for the first time。THE WORLDBUILDINGThe world in this was so imaginable and simple。 I am so glad to say that it does not get to the point where it's over described and overwhelming。 The book begins quickly immersing the reader into the kingdom of Ravka head on。 Terms are thrown at the reader at a reasonable pace for a fantasy novel and for once I didn't immediately feel overwhelmed or the need to "play catch up" with the characters which I appreciated。 THE CHARACTERSI liked Alina, but she didn’t sweep me off my feet。 Her character is a walking trope。 The chosen one who wants little to do with her destiny。 She's very common with familiar insecurities that we all face。 She gets a lot of grief for the mistakes she makes in this book。。。 but come on ladies- I think we would all make the same mistakes she makes, if put in her situation。 I can’t help but wonder what’s going to happen in the next book。 There are definitely a lot of possibilities and I’m looking forward to read about her character development。 Because, yes, there will be a lot of character development ahead of her I hope。Let’s talk about the Darkling。 “Fine,” he said with a weary shrug。 “Make me your villain。” WEll, do't mind if I do, sir。 I love him to bits and pieces。 He’s everything I need a villain to be: cruel, cunning, calculating, ambitious, ruthless and misguided。 He is the perfect antagonist。 I don’t get why so many people hate Mal。 He got on my nerves in the beginning just cause he was very boyish and clearly naive to Alina’s feelings but what do you expect? I usually tend to dislike the “handsome childhood friends” in YA books but I really ended up liking Mal。 He’s nice and caring and he’s a loyal friend。 Now do I love him as a love interests? I’ll have to keep you updated in the next book for that。 Overall Thoughts: I think it goes without saying I loved the writing。 The descriptions were vivid, easy to visualize and thankfully, not overdone 。 If you’re a sucker for classic YA tropes and want to see how they can be written in unexpected ways, I highly recommend you to read this book! You won’t be disappointed! 。。。more

This book was really good。 I was hooked from the beginning and not bored for more than a few pages。 Even though I am still rooting for the Darkling and Alina to become endgame, I can’t say the romance between Alina and Mal was bad。 All together the story was intriguing and I can’t wait to see the Netflix show。

Imagining him as Ben Barnes definitely doesn’t help the situation。 And then Mal WHEW。 At first he was just okay but towards the end he got extra fine。 I can’t believe BAGHRA is the darklings mother like huh?? Lots of potential in world building, but badly executed in terms of writing。 Some scenes/character reactions were overly dramatic/cheesy and some dystopian tropes were expected and boring。 Hope the writing will get better with the next one
