(I don’t care if that’s a word, we’re rolling with it。) But this was a very mild issue and she never phrased anything as “You have to take this advice or else you’re a bad writer” unless there was genuinely a reason to。I still think authors should still research more into the subjects presented here and learn these things more in-depth since this book won’t teach you EVERYTHING, but at least it covers all the important stuff from brainstorming to the final edits。 There's also a summary at the end of each chapter which was really helpful for people like me that have an atrocious attention span lol。I also love that Jenna’s voice is obvious here and I love how many references we got to her whole career basically。 If you know anything about Jenna, you’re in for some fun Easter eggs。 All in all, I think this is probably the best writing guidebook I've ever seen considering what it's aiming for, and you'll find a lot of good info and lighthearted chuckles from the entertaining style it is written in。 。。。more

This is a review of the Advanced Reader Copy of “Shut Up and Write the Book”。 As you can probably tell from the name, the book isn’t just a how-to guide; it’s also a push to keep writing。 The book is laid out very informally, like the author is chatting with you。 If you’ve seen her YouTube channel, you can probably hear her voice when you read her fun, snarky quips or the words “But, Jenna!” (If you don’t watch her channel, you should know that she uses some strong language, too。) The format mak This is a review of the Advanced Reader Copy of “Shut Up and Write the Book”。 As you can probably tell from the name, the book isn’t just a how-to guide; it’s also a push to keep writing。 The book is laid out very informally, like the author is chatting with you。 If you’ve seen her YouTube channel, you can probably hear her voice when you read her fun, snarky quips or the words “But, Jenna!” (If you don’t watch her channel, you should know that she uses some strong language, too。) The format makes this book easy to read, but it also means that each topic is more of an overview than an in-depth dive。 There are lots of good tips throughout, though, and the chapter ends have helpful summaries for reference。 If you’re a writer, you’ll probably find some points to work on or make you think。 。。。more

Shut Up and Write the BookI am not a writer myself but I do a lot of beta- and alpha-reading and I wanted to read this book to try to understand more of the creative process authors go through so I could try to help my authors better to assist them in putting their best story possible out into the world。 (Also, shout-out thanks to Jenna for the ARC copy for my honest review。) I’m also just interested in the creative process, and I believed I would enjoy Jenna’s approach。 I was correct, because t Shut Up and Write the BookI am not a writer myself but I do a lot of beta- and alpha-reading and I wanted to read this book to try to understand more of the creative process authors go through so I could try to help my authors better to assist them in putting their best story possible out into the world。 (Also, shout-out thanks to Jenna for the ARC copy for my honest review。) I’m also just interested in the creative process, and I believed I would enjoy Jenna’s approach。 I was correct, because this book is told just like Jenna talks in her videos: irreverent humor, sarcastic wit, and straight up straight talk about the hard work it takes to put in to write a (hopefully) best-selling book。However, reading this felt a bit like reading a book report as there was a lot of tell them what you’re going to tell them, tell them, then tell them what you’ve told them。 The repetition is sort of grating, but I suppose that Jenna wants aspiring authors to not have to skip around to previous or later parts to remember what was said。 But I’m also well-aware that I am not the target audience of this book and I’m sure that individuals who are the target audience will find this resource a veritable goldmine of knowledge and helpful tips to utilize on their journey。 I believe it would be well worth it to anyone who wishes to start on the writing process (or any established writer who wishes to brush up their skill set) to pick up a copy of this book。 。。。more

Well, I've been picking apart every single word and sentence within this guide。 It's detailed and in-depth without dredging on, and provides insight on topics I already know, do without thinking, and even ones that I had no idea about at all。 My only negative for this book is that I feel like a lot of the content from it is shared over from her YouTube channel。 This makes sense, as her entire channel is dedicated to helping people plan and write their books from square one。 However, as an avid viewer of Jenna's, I noticed that some of the content had already been said before, sometimes almost word-for-word。 There were, however, many things I noticed haven't been said before (or at least with this level of detail)。That being said, I found this book to be extremely helpful in giving me a step-by-step, chronological idea of where I need to go with my own story, and what I should go back and make changes to。 It acts almost as a handbook, where I can continuously refer back to it and easily read up on character profile attributes, for example。 It made me seriously think about the process I was already doing, and reflect on it in both positive and critical ways。 I recommend this story for all budding authors, whether you’re new to the writing world or already extremely well-versed。 Even if it’s just a helpful way to organize your thoughts and break down the structure for yourself, there’s something to be learned for everyone。 。。。more

I received an ARC of this book (my first one ever!) and just finished reading it (life is busy sometimes), so I wanted to leave the review I promised when I applied for the ARC。 I did not receive any money or other incentives for reviewing the book, and I will be as objective as possible。Who is this book for? Anyone who wants to write and self-publish a book and has no idea where to start。 Who is it probably not for? Anyone who has already read a few guides on how to write, and/or anyone looking I received an ARC of this book (my first one ever!) and just finished reading it (life is busy sometimes), so I wanted to leave the review I promised when I applied for the ARC。 I did not receive any money or other incentives for reviewing the book, and I will be as objective as possible。Who is this book for? Anyone who wants to write and self-publish a book and has no idea where to start。 Who is it probably not for? Anyone who has already read a few guides on how to write, and/or anyone looking to get traditionally published。 The first 3/4 of the book will still be useful to the latter category, but this guide is mostly about self-publishing。 I wanted to highlight that, because it's not mentioned on the cover or very explicitly in the book itself。 I'm not a published author (yet?), but I've always read that if you are going to query agents and then publishing houses, you don't necessarily have to pay for a bunch of editors first as long as you've self-edited and had critique partners and beta readers。 (And sometimes, you won't even get to pick your own title。)Also, if you're not a fan of Jenna's Youtube channel (not everyone likes everything!), you might not like this either。 It's more toned down compared to her videos, but it's still very Jenna。What is this book, then? It's mostly a step-by-step guide on how to outline, write, self-edit, and then send out to have edited, a book。 As I said, the first three quarters will be useful even to those not looking to self-publish。 If you are looking to self-publish, you'll need a second book on how to get a cover, where to publish, and how to market。 It's fairly comprehensive and covers the most important topics at every step, but if you need special help in any area (e。g。 your characters tend to be flat, or you have no idea how to build a world, or you don't know the conventions of your intended genre), you'll need to look at more resources for help。 If you're just starting out, this book will be really useful to you until you identify the areas you need to do more research in。If you have already read a ton of books on writing, story structure, characters, common issues etc。, this book will not feel as helpful to you - which is fine, not every book can be useful to everyone! This isn't so much a "shut up and write the book" guide, it's a "here's how to write your first proper novel" guide。 Still very valid, but you have to go in with the right expectations。 。。。more

Before I begin, I would like to thank Jenna for giving me an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review。Shut Up and Write the Book will probably be the funniest, most-brutally honest guide book you'll ever read。 Jenna's signature snark and sarcasm are on full force throughout the pages of this book, making for a fun and engaging read。 She covers everything you need to know when starting your first draft (i。e。, planning, character creation, outlining, world-building, point of vie Before I begin, I would like to thank Jenna for giving me an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in exchange for an honest review。Shut Up and Write the Book will probably be the funniest, most-brutally honest guide book you'll ever read。 Jenna's signature snark and sarcasm are on full force throughout the pages of this book, making for a fun and engaging read。 She covers everything you need to know when starting your first draft (i。e。, planning, character creation, outlining, world-building, point of view, pacing and more) to a completed manuscript。 She goes step-by-step in detail about how to make your book the best it can possibly be。 But she doesn't sugar-code anything, she tells you as it is and in reality it's really hard to write a book。 I found myself flying through the pages and wishing there was more she would talk about。 Her writing style is sharp and witty making it feel conversational and personal。The only reason I gave this book 4 stars instead of 5 (and trust me, I wanted to give it 5) was because of little things Moreci did throughout the book。 If you know of her youtube channel, you'll know she gives very similar tips she does in this book。 That's not my problem。 My main problem is that Jenna will sometimes take direct quotes from her videos and put in the book。 To anyone reading this with no prior knowledge of channel, this wouldn't be an issue for you。 but if you're like me and have been watching her for 5+ years, it may be a little annoying。 I wish she would've at least re-worded certain stuff she said without having it feel like she copied and pasted lines from her videos。Asides from that, I have no qualms with this book。 It's a funny, digestible book and anyone whose a fan of her channel, or writing craft novels in general, should definitely check it out。 。。。more

So, I received an E-Arc for this to give an honest review。 Below are my thoughts。 I'm writing this review as someone who has previously planned, outlined and completed a manuscript following most, if not all, of Jenna's advice。 This is the first "on writing" book I'd recommend to anyone who wants to actually complete a book。 It's helpful, full of personality and most of all, Jenna wrote this in a way that feels like she's rooting for you to get the job done- even if you're not rooting for yourse So, I received an E-Arc for this to give an honest review。 Below are my thoughts。 I'm writing this review as someone who has previously planned, outlined and completed a manuscript following most, if not all, of Jenna's advice。 This is the first "on writing" book I'd recommend to anyone who wants to actually complete a book。 It's helpful, full of personality and most of all, Jenna wrote this in a way that feels like she's rooting for you to get the job done- even if you're not rooting for yourself! As I've said, I'm a fan of Jenna's YouTube content, so when I heard she was literally "writing the book" on the subjects she covers, I knew what to expect。 Jenna did not disappoint。 Her usual wit, clever analogies, sarcasm and helpful anecdotes are all here with a heap of her usual snark(which I treasure)。 As is her style, Jenna lays out the hard truths, so if you like that, you'll love this。 Another thing I appreciate about this is that the author zeroes in on her points and stays there。 I didn't have to sit through a long-drawn-out intro or wandering passages about her past and pontification on her career。 She knows what you're there for and she sticks to the point。 She's got stuff to do, and you've got a book to write。 She even goes so far as to leave you breadcrumbs to follow for more tips/research on writing if you'd like, but she clearly had a goal in writing this: To provide readers with actionable information and not waste our time。 I love that。 The formatting of this book is also very reference friendly。 I found the way the author divided and organized everything she had to say was not only helpful, but easy to jump back to。 When I get my hands on a physical copy, I'm looking forward to highlighting and marking this book up like a subway- it'll be like having saved clips from Jenna's YouTube channel- but with no ads。You might see the terms "snark' or "sarcasm" or "hard truths" and assume Jenna might be dismissive of your journey in this book- don't worry, it's never that。 As a matter of fact, reading this gave me more confidence in writing than a lot of other help books out there (at this point that's par for the course, but whatever)。 Jenna's very considerate of *your* place in *your* writing journey。 She's here to help, not judge。 In other words, this author's not the patronizing theater senior looking down on the freshman as a baby who can't keep up。 She's pulling you out in the hall with to run your lines with a little tough love and an occasional flick to forehead for motivation。 I'm giving this book 5 stars for what it's meant to be and how it accomplishes that。 It's a perfect tool to keep handy and get some enjoyment out of。 it's humorous, informative, and leaves you with everything you need to shut up and write your book。 。。。more

I received an arc of this book in return for a fair and honest review。 And that’s exactly what you’re getting today。 Jenna Moreci’s Youtube channel is one of my favorites for smart, sweary writing advice。 So, when she announced that she was publishing a book about writing, I had to get my hands on it。 When I found out she was offering arcs to select reviewers, I jumped on that like a rat on a pizza slice。 Shut Up And Write The Book is essentially a step-by-step manual to, obviously, writing a bo I received an arc of this book in return for a fair and honest review。 And that’s exactly what you’re getting today。 Jenna Moreci’s Youtube channel is one of my favorites for smart, sweary writing advice。 So, when she announced that she was publishing a book about writing, I had to get my hands on it。 When I found out she was offering arcs to select reviewers, I jumped on that like a rat on a pizza slice。 Shut Up And Write The Book is essentially a step-by-step manual to, obviously, writing a book。 It is specifically tailored for fiction authors, so if you're writing nonfiction, this one might not be for you。 But as I don't write nonfiction, it was delightful for me。 I will say that, as an experienced author, some of the information was redundant。 I did find myself skimming some of the early chapters especially, because of course I’ve read a ton of writing advice books。 I’ve also written writing advice for writers since 2014。 And watched the vast majority of Jenna’s Youtube videos。 But if you feel like you know everything in this book, you are wrong。 It’s an egotistical fool who dismisses advice because they think they know everything already。 So I always do my best to come to every bit of writing education as a novice。 I never regret this。The first thing I loved about Shut Up And Write The Book was that Jenna writes how she talks。 I can hear her voice as I’m reading, which is delightful。 She has a quick, supportive way of talking about writing that makes it feel more like a small business project instead of an ethereal endeavor that we mere mortals have no sort of control over。 If you are one of those people who feel like writing a book is overwhelming, this is a book you need。 It walks you through every step of the novel writing process。 And I mean every single step。 If you have nothing but a desire to write a book, but not a single damn idea for that book, that is perfect。 The first chapters start with brainstorming in a realistic and accessible way。 Then, it continues to walk you through each step of the process。 Now, I did think that the outline and brainstorming section of the book was a bit heavy。 I don't generally go into as much detail as Jenna does with her character creation and world-building。 But, to be honest, maybe I should consider trying this out for my next book。 It can only help。 Each chapter ends with a summary of the information that the chapter included。 At first, I thought this was a little irritating。 I mean, I just finished reading all this content。 I don't need a summing up。 And yes, while doing a read through there's not any value in that summary。 However, as I go through the book again and use it as it's intended, as a workbook, I find that summary to be really helpful。 Because I can check in with the summary and see if I need to re-read this chapter, or if I have the basics down。I found that as I got closer to the end of the book, I found it more and more useful。 I certainly have my writing weaknesses, and one of them is finding beta readers。 I learned just a ton about that process, which I'm looking forward to utilizing as my current novels come closer and closer to completion。 If you’re a writer, this is a book to grab。 It’s full of smart advice that’s easy to use。 。。。more

Just one of your tips would have made reading your book worthwhile。 Writers, do yourself a favor and add Shut Up and Write the Book to your library。 This one is a keeper! 。。。more

I’ve been a longtime fan of Jenna’s video’s, so I was pretty excited about this book。 Yes, you could find all this information on the internet。Yes, writing is subjective to personal preference。 But it’s just so darn handy to have all the information in one place and Jenna makes it fun, too。 This book has everything you need to know about the writing process to make sure you have all you need to finish and polish your manuscript。

First of all, Thank you so much Jenna for sending me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review。This book is as insightful and hilarious as Jenna's youtube channel。 It starts right from coming up with the idea, structuring it, outlining it, getting through the first draft even if it sucks, and editing it until you throw up。Jenna doesn't sugarcoat anything and that's exactly what I was expecting from the book。 As an indie author, I found some great tips that I'd try to incorporate into my books。St First of all, Thank you so much Jenna for sending me an e-ARC in exchange for an honest review。This book is as insightful and hilarious as Jenna's youtube channel。 It starts right from coming up with the idea, structuring it, outlining it, getting through the first draft even if it sucks, and editing it until you throw up。Jenna doesn't sugarcoat anything and that's exactly what I was expecting from the book。 As an indie author, I found some great tips that I'd try to incorporate into my books。Step-by-Step guide books are often boring to read, but not this one。 You'll laugh as you learn。If you are in a hurry, you will find a chapter summary after each chapter which is as insightful as the actual chapter。 Or, I'd recommend reading the whole book and then referring to the summary whenever you are stuck in any particular phase of the book writing。Absolutely loved it。 Going to rely on it for so many things。 Highly recommend it to fellow authors to get some awesome tips。 。。。more
