Summary

#1 best-selling author Stephen King returns with a brand-new novel about the secrets we keep buried and the cost of unearthing them。

The son of a struggling single mother, Jamie Conklin just wants an ordinary childhood。 But Jamie is no ordinary child。 Born with an unnatural ability his mom urges him to keep secret, Jamie can see what no one else can see and learn what no one else can learn。 But the cost of using this ability is higher than Jamie can imagine - as he discovers when an NYPD detective draws him into the pursuit of a killer who has threatened to strike from beyond the grave。

'LATER' is Stephen King at his finest, a terrifying and touching story of innocence lost and the trials that test our sense of right and wrong。 With echoes of King's classic novel 'IT', 'LATER' is a powerful, haunting, unforgettable exploration of what it takes to stand up to evil in all the faces it wears。

It seems almost sinful to give only 3 stars for the best storyteller: I always feel he’s on a bench by me telling colorfully the lives of everyone。 But somehow I lost interest at the last quarter and thought it could’ve been more Kingish。

Highly recommended such a good coming-of-age supernatural story that is believable this book will stay in my mind for a long timeI am in aha of how Stephen king can keep producing such readable entertaining good books through all these years when a lot of the other authors lose their mojo after about the fifth book

Not a classicBut then again, a very good and readable effort from the best thriller/horror writer working these days。 Interesting premise, just the right length, and written in King’s comfortable and eminently readable style。 Well worth the time invested。

Later will be more enjoyable for Constant Readers, but there is still something here for even non-King readers。 Although the main character and narrator is quite enjoyable, the supporting cast is weak in comparison until the end of the book。 This could have been a stylized choice, but the book feels more like a novella instead of a novel。 I still feel confident giving this a strong 4/5 and is a must read for any that have read and enjoyed some of King's most popular works。 Later will be more enjoyable for Constant Readers, but there is still something here for even non-King readers。 Although the main character and narrator is quite enjoyable, the supporting cast is weak in comparison until the end of the book。 This could have been a stylized choice, but the book feels more like a novella instead of a novel。 I still feel confident giving this a strong 4/5 and is a must read for any that have read and enjoyed some of King's most popular works。 。。。more

It's always a pleasure to dig into a new Stephen King novel, and Later is a quick breezy read that plays like an abridged version of some of King's greatest hits - but they're greatest hits for a reason。 Later follows Jamie Conklin, a young boy living with his single mom in New York City who has dark secret - he has the ability to temporary see and communicate with the dead shortly after their demise。 Circumstance forces Jamie into the orbit of a ruthless (and dirty) NYPD detective who sees Jami It's always a pleasure to dig into a new Stephen King novel, and Later is a quick breezy read that plays like an abridged version of some of King's greatest hits - but they're greatest hits for a reason。 Later follows Jamie Conklin, a young boy living with his single mom in New York City who has dark secret - he has the ability to temporary see and communicate with the dead shortly after their demise。 Circumstance forces Jamie into the orbit of a ruthless (and dirty) NYPD detective who sees Jamie's "gift" as a way to accelerate and protect her fledging career。 Later operates best as a coming-of-age story with light horror and crime elements, and no one has a better command of voice and tone than Stephen King。 Seriously, no one can craft more sympathetic and compelling characters in such a short amount of pages。 There's never a moment in Later in which the story drags, and there's always something of interest happening。 Also, Later has a pretty bonkers connection to one of King's most popular (and infamous) creations。 For such a quick read (especially in King's case), Later packs a surprising punch, especially in the final pages when Jamies grapples with the consequences of his ability as they relate to some family secrets。 A fun read, and if you're a Constant Reader, it comes with a wink and a smile。 。。。more

4。5 StarsA wonderfully fun coming-of-age/horror/supernatural tale。 This is the genre that King really does excel in。 Many of King's novels take place between the 50s and 80s and so I personally miss out on that sense of nostalgia many experience in those books。 Luckily for me, much of this book occurs in the early noughties, when I myself was a kid/young teenager so I finally got to join in with the nostalgia! Typical Steven King page turner。 The metaphor throughout the book resonated with me。。。1。 The “what ifs” of life, wouldda, couldda shouldda vibe, the grass is always greener, 2。 And knowing if you made one different decision, your life would have turned out differently。 I didn’t give it 5 stars because I thought the ending was a bit weak。 I enjoyed it otherwise

This book was, like a lot of Stephen King's books, awesome! To start, I've always been a big Stephen King fan。 I've read dozens of his books, and I LOVE The Dark Tower series。 It's one of the best。But this book had one of the worst endings I've EVER read。 A completely unnecessary plot twist that added nothing to the book。The book had a good premise, and it really held my interest。 I adored the narrator, Jamie Conklin。 And while it was reminiscent of The Sixth Sense, I liked the story。 He connected it to the Stephen King multiverse including many referenc To start, I've always been a big Stephen King fan。 I've read dozens of his books, and I LOVE The Dark Tower series。 It's one of the best。But this book had one of the worst endings I've EVER read。 A completely unnecessary plot twist that added nothing to the book。The book had a good premise, and it really held my interest。 I adored the narrator, Jamie Conklin。 And while it was reminiscent of The Sixth Sense, I liked the story。 He connected it to the Stephen King multiverse including many references to It。 I enjoyed reading it。。。。at least until the last 20 pages。 But it's almost as if while Stephen King was wrapping up the book, he thought, "this book isn't fucked up enough。" Let's add some sadism and family incest to make it more screwed up。 It added nothing to the book。 It was completely pointless and felt lazy。 It was almost as if he didn't know where to take it so took it to the darkest, most unpleasant place。 Like the ick factor would make up for the fact that he didn't know how to end it。If you really like Stephen King, I'd read it but put the book down before the last 20 pages and make up your own ending。 But if you don't, skip it。 I wish I had。⭐️/5 (maybe 1。5) 。。。more

。。。more

Good book with a really stupid ending。 The story is compelling。 A kid can see dead people。 It is in no like the movie Sixth Sense。 King even mentions The Sixth Sense just to let you know he's aware that readers might think he's ripping it off。 He's not。 Anyway, I liked it until the "shocker" detail of who the main character's father is。 It felt pointless。 Do we need an omg moment( a moment that has nothing to with the plot) in a horror story? Stephen King does the sixth sense though not as scary (probably because i already watched the sixth sense)。 Decent story to it, despite the unoriginal premise, and King does set the ground rules for seeing and communicating with the dead and he keeps to those rules。 The narrator keeps saying it's a horror story but i was never scared by it, and i don't like scary movies。 King does leave the smallest window open for a sequel Stephen King does the sixth sense though not as scary (probably because i already watched the sixth sense)。 Decent story to it, despite the unoriginal premise, and King does set the ground rules for seeing and communicating with the dead and he keeps to those rules。 The narrator keeps saying it's a horror story but i was never scared by it, and i don't like scary movies。 King does leave the smallest window open for a sequel 。。。more

I wonder if this book was inspired by the Odd Thomas series by Koontz。 They differ, of course, and they both delight in different ways。 Later is a page turner for sure and it’s hard to put down。 I hope for a series of novels in this arc。

I want to give this 4 stars purely because I love Stephen King so much, but that wouldn’t be fair。 It started off as 4 stars, at least。 Still an enjoyable story and I’m glad I read it。

[4,5 stars] It could have been longer。 That is the only complaint I have for this one。 I liked the story and (as expected) I was completely immersed in in within a few pages That is one of the reasons why I like King so much。 And, of course, the twists and turns of the story and that I never quite know where the story will lead to。 A quick read but I loved it。

This was a quick read, especially for a King book, but a great one nontheless。 In this way, it reminds me of Joyland。 If you haven't read that one, you really should。 This book follows Cha。。。。。er。。。Jamie as he grows up from age 6 through his early 20's。 King does his thing where he fleshes out each character and makes their relationships feel genuine, and the pages just fly by。 Oh, but Jamie sees dead people。 There are some rules to this though。 They generally only hang around for a few days aft This was a quick read, especially for a King book, but a great one nontheless。 In this way, it reminds me of Joyland。 If you haven't read that one, you really should。 This book follows Cha。。。。。er。。。Jamie as he grows up from age 6 through his early 20's。 King does his thing where he fleshes out each character and makes their relationships feel genuine, and the pages just fly by。 Oh, but Jamie sees dead people。 There are some rules to this though。 They generally only hang around for a few days after death, so it isn't like there are swarms of ghosts/spirits everywhere he goes, and they have to tell the truth when asked a question。 Jamie's gift is eventually exposed by a cop to help solve a crime。。。。which then changes the rules and his life。 I love when Stephen King writes from the perspective of children/young adults (though I don't think they swear quite so much at 6), and this book is no exception。 Although our MC keeps telling us that this is a horror story, I can't say I was ever scared myself 。。。。just intrigued and delighted。 There is a twist at the end of the book that I don't understand the point of。 Yes, it was shocking。。。。but other than shock value, I'm not sure what purpose it served。 Perhaps it just went over my head, but it seemed unnecessary。 Overall, this was a great read! 。。。more
