Summary

And So We Walked is a frank, heartwarming, and inspiring story about a contemporary Cherokee woman and her father who embark on an incredible 900-mile journey along the Trail of Tears to truly understand her own identity and the conflicts of her nation。 The play recounts the six-week journey, which retraced the path her great-great-grandparents took in the 1830s during the forced relocation of 17,000 Cherokee from their homelands。 And So We Walked is a powerful, multifaceted dramatic memoir that draws on extraordinary interviews, historical research, and the artist's personal experience to convey the complexities and conflicts with which the Cherokee wrestle。

Very sad, poignant but brilliant book。 I have strong Scottish descendants and I well stories of my ancestry with British invaded Scotland and tried to steal and then a voice and culture。I now live in New Zealand with the same thing was done to the native people。For the American Indian who had been there probably as long as my agent ancestors and their own land, this has had a dreadful impact on the culture and indeed the very essence。 So glad I read this and I hope others do as well as the story Very sad, poignant but brilliant book。 I have strong Scottish descendants and I well stories of my ancestry with British invaded Scotland and tried to steal and then a voice and culture。I now live in New Zealand with the same thing was done to the native people。For the American Indian who had been there probably as long as my agent ancestors and their own land, this has had a dreadful impact on the culture and indeed the very essence。 So glad I read this and I hope others do as well as the story, it’s true true story, should never be forgotten。 God bless the author。 。。。more

This short book offers an interesting perspective on the Trail of Tears and its continuing impact on the Cherokee today as a Cherokee woman and her father take six weeks to retrace the trail, interviewing Cherokee along the way。 It’s a very emotional account and aptly demonstrates how a government-sanctioned crime nearly two hundred years ago is still being felt in the twenty-first century。I was surprised that the author thinks that the Trail of Tears and the surrounding events are not broadly k This short book offers an interesting perspective on the Trail of Tears and its continuing impact on the Cherokee today as a Cherokee woman and her father take six weeks to retrace the trail, interviewing Cherokee along the way。 It’s a very emotional account and aptly demonstrates how a government-sanctioned crime nearly two hundred years ago is still being felt in the twenty-first century。I was surprised that the author thinks that the Trail of Tears and the surrounding events are not broadly known today。 Perhaps they aren’t, but I first heard about it in elementary school some 45 years ago along with Andrew Jackson’s decision to ignore a Supreme Court order and force the Cherokee off their lands。 What I found much more informative were the glimpses into modern Cherokee life and the experiences of many Cherokee。 One tends to think of events this far in the past as “in the past” but the damage done by the United States’ “Indian Policy” continue to be felt including the Dawes Act and efforts to force young Cherokee children to give up their culture。It's a very moving book。 If you liked this review, you can find more at www。gilbertstack。com/reviews。 。。。more
